The Bracken Court Hotel follows a proud tradition of being at the heart of Balbriggan, North County Dublin. A hotel has stood on this very spot since 1898... In 1898, the Hamilton Arms Hotel was built on the current site of the Bracken Court Hotel. It was run by Mary & Charles Graham and remained the Hamilton Arms until 1933. In 1933, the hotel was sold to Mary Rooney and was known as the Central Hotel and it remained so until 1939. Bracken Court Hotel, Bridge Street, Balbriggan, Co. Between 1939 and 1954, the hotel changed hands and was renamed on several occasions before finally being bought by Patrick Reilly. In 1962, Patrick bought the adjoining building and extended the hotel. The hotel was then known as The Grand Hotel and remained so until 1989 when it once again had a new owner... Ardgillen Castle and Demesne is close-by and offers visitors magnificent views of the Irish Sea. Balbriggan is a rapidly expanding town which has experienced significant residential and commercial development over the past 10 years. The population of Balbriggan is approximately 18,000.

the thatch House Upper Main Street, Rush. - Tel: 01-8709099 - Em ail: oppermanncarl@yaho o.ie

Coffee House With A Twist One of the most identifiable buildings in the North County has recently changed hands. The Thatch Coffee House on Lower Main Street in Rush is instantly recognisable, with it’s blue exterior wall and traditional thatched roof. It has always been a very popular venue, where locals and visitors are drawn to it by it’s olde world charm. With it’s sense of history, combined with an ambience that encourages relaxation and the perfect place to meet friends, the Thatch Coffee House is the ideal place to unwind. New owner, Carl Oppermann is determined to continue the great service for which the Thatch is renowned. Carl, who lives in Swords is deeply rooted in the hospitality business. He is a nephew of renowned restauranteur, Johnny Oppermannn catering manager and executive chef at the old Dublin Airport, Oppermanns Country club hotel in Kilternan where the great Muhamad Ali stayed in 1972,and the famous Johnnys restaurant in Malahide . Carl is a highly qualified chef and he has just returned from the Culinary Olympics in Germany, where he was on the Irish team. “We collected a few medals and we were also there in 2008,” said Carl. Manager of the Thatch, Caroline Hand lives in Donabate and is also a highly qualified chef, having worked in Lukas Restaurant in Swords and has been working with Carl for the past six or seven years. Indeed, their working relationship reflects a wealth of experience in the culinary business. Carl explained, “My last job was as Head Chef in the Botanic Gardens and Caroline worked with me there. Previous to this, we we did corporate catering at various big events and festivals like Electric Picnic, the Solheim Cup and the Irish Open Golf tournament. We have an outside catering business, which is very large. This is where we come to people’s homes and do the catering for events, like Holy Communions, Confirmations, Christenings and other large family gatherings,” said Carl. He went on to explain that there has been a change in the way people like to entertain. “Over the past few years, people like to stay at home, and that’s where we come in.” He told me about how he came to own this lovely building. “We had been looking at a few places and when the Thatch came on the market last February, we loved it immediately and fell for it’s alluring charms. We settled the deal just two weeks before Christmas and got the keys on Christmas Eve. It was an opportunity not to be missed. It needs some tender loving care, and we are determined to put our mark on it,” said a delighted Carl. They opened for business on 3rd January, after a holiday period of cleaning, decorating and getting the place ready. Carl explained the plans for the Thatch. “At the moment, we serve great Bewley’s coffee, breakfasts, snacks and sandwiches

for lunch. We have a dinner menu priced 2 course’s €16.95 and 3 course €19.95 and open Thursday’s, Friday’s and Saturday’s from 6pm-9pm for dinner. Carl and Caroline are very definite about their mission statement and how they see the Thatch evolving. “We aim to provide quality food at an affordable price. We want to provide an unforgettable eating experience at great prices, serving simple, but delicious food, where people can have a two or three course quality meal at prices they can afford. One of our specialities is our Oppermann’s Seafood Chowder, which is a delicious, hearty meal in a bowl, providing great taste and sustenance in our harsh winter weather. This delicious serving is a meal in itself,” said Carl, who has also had experience of cooking in places like France and Switzerland. The new owners are very conscious about supporting the local economy and their fresh vegetables are supplied by Keelings in St Margaret’s. Their fish is supplied by Gerry Gannon in Balbriggan and their meat comes from just up the road in Co. Meath The atmosphere in The Thatch is particularly endearing and the intimate size of the premises oozes charm and history. It is like taking a step back to a different era, but with a modern twist. The Thatch is the oldest two storied thatch cottage in the North County and dates back to 1760. It is thought to have been the home of the notorious smuggler, Jack the Bachelor who plied his trade, pirating ships off the Rush and Loughshinny coast. One can almost feel the sense of history in this utterly charming place. Indeed Carl explained that there is a room upstairs that remains closed and nobody is permitted to enter this room, by order of the County Council, who have give the building protected status. The importance of the history of The Thatch is not lost on Carl and he is very proud to be associated with such an historic building. “We are careful guardians of this beautiful building and we are proud to invite people to come and experience the Thatch Coffee House.” His enthusiasm and professionalism is very evident and, along with Caroline, he has provided the people of Rush and the greater North County area with a venue to meet old friends and enjoy great tasting coffee, wine and fantastic food. Go along and treat yourself and be charmed by this lovely place.

History of Guinness inLeixlip and the Court Yard Hotel

W

hen Archbishop Price died in 1752 he left £100, quite a sum then, to his servant, Richard Guinness and a similar amount to Richard’s son, Arthur, who was then aged 27.

Richard appears to be the oldest known Guinness having being born around 1690 and was living in Leixlip in 1766. He had arrived in Celbridge in 1722 and was employed by Archbishop Price as a land steward. One of his duties was to supervise the brewing of beer for workers on the Price estate. In the same year, the Archbishop took over James Carberry’s brewery near the bridge in Celbridge, apparently inspired by the ability of Richard “to make a brew of a very palatable nature”, which he was brewing in his brewery in Leixlip, where the Court Yard Hotel now stands. Could this “palatable” brew be either the black stuff or closely related to it? Arthur was born in Celbridge in 1725, he was 31 when jointly with his brother he established a brewery on Main St. Leixlip - the lease for the property dates from 13th September 1756 and the original lease for the site is displayed beside the main reception in the hotel with Arthur’s signature on it. Three years later, Arthur then aged 34 left his younger brother, Richard, in charge of that enterprise and moved on and bought an existing, but run down brewery at St. James Gate in Dublin. It was there he established the world famous company. The start of the Guinness business is always taken as being 1759, the date of this move. He lived on the Gate premises for a while and brewed all types of beer including dark beer known as porters ale or porter. The colour was obtained by including in the mash, with the ordinary pale malt, a proportion of malt that was roasted until virtually black. There was a problem with the process - brewing was more an art than a science then - but Arthur was among the first Irishmen to become really good at producing black porter. His Guinness porter gained a foothold in the English market despite a tax on Irish beer and when it was removed in 1795 the Guinness brewery gave up ale to concentrated on brewing porter, much of it for the export trade. In Leixlip, the Guinness family owned the property on which the house owned by Dr. Mary Boyd is built. While Arthur set up the Gate brewery, his brother, Richard, ran the Leixlip brewery from 1759 to 1803 on his own. Wealth flowed for the family. By the end of the 1700s, they owned the coaching yard, on the site of the Court Yard Hotel, Dr. Boyd’s house and twelve smaller houses or shops along the main street which still stand today. When Arthur died in 1803, aged 78, he was buried at Oughterard Cemetery near Kill, a mere 20 minute drive from the hotel, which is also the resting place of his wife, Olivia, who bore him 21 children following their marriage in 1761. If some Guinness’s took to drink, Arthur Guinness’s eldest son, the Rev. Hosea Guinness (1765-1841) took to religion and was rector of St. Werburg’s church in Dublin. The family link with Leixlip was re-ignited in 1958, when Hon. Desmond Guinness, then aged 27, the same age as Arthur when he got his inheritance, bought Leixlip Castle, where he still resides today with his wife Penny. The Castle can be seen from the bedrooms in the hotel. The site saw many changes of ownership over the years, everything from an arbitress to a nun’s resident and some views of the changes on the site throughout the years can be seen in the Piano Bar of the hotel. Through the 1970’s – 1980’s the site ran into ruin and disarray but yet through it all the original walls of the brewery still stood. In the 1990’s the site was finally bought over by its current owner, Mr. Luke Moriarty, who had a vision of a hotel on the site incorporating the original features, such as the stone walls of the brewery and incorporating them into a contemporary, modern hotel. With patience and care, the original walls of the brewery were restored to their former glory. Mr. Moriarty ensured that every door and window was reset to the way they were when Arthur and Richard owned the site. With the approval of Hon. Desmond Guinness, the hotel opened its doors in June 2005 and once again Guinness was back where it all began with a very modern version of Arthur’s porter now begin sold in Arthur’s Bar. The hotel was awarded the amazing accolade of being “The most romantic hotel in Europe” by Prudence Magazine in 2006, an award that the management and staff are extremely proud of. At the Official Launch of the hotel on the 8th November 2005, the Hon Desmond Guinness unveiled a plaque that states the hotel is on the original site of Guinness. This plaque is displayed proudly over the fireplace in the main reception of the hotel.

Things to do and see in Leixlip: Leixlip Castle

A medieval castle on a rock above where the Rye water flows into the river Liffey, partly rebuilt in the 18 th century and with an 18 th century interior. Founded in the 12 th century by one of Strongbow’s followers; the massive round tower, which is still the castle’s dominant feature, dates from this period. Later it belonged to the crown, but was granted in 1569 to Sir Nicholas Whyte, Master of the Rolls. In 1731, it was sold by John Whyte to Rt. Hon William Connolly, nephew and heir of Speaker Connolly, the builder of the nearby Castletown House, whose widow continued to live at Castletown after his death. William Connolly left Leixlip for Castletown after his aunt’s death in 1752; but it remained in the Connolly family until 1914. The Honourable Desmond Guinness bought the property and he has resided there since 1958. He has carried out much renovation and restoration of the castle and has furnished it in a most fitting style.

The Wonderful Barn

The Wonderful Barn, dating from 1743 was built as part of Castletown Demesne, just west of Leixlip village. It was built to give employment to the local tenants during the severe winters of 1741 -1742 when early and prolonged frost destroyed crops. Standing 70 feet tall, this conical structure with five floors is surrounded with an outside winding staircase of 94 steps. It is flanked by two smaller towers. The barn was used for storing grain. Each floor contains a circular opening where sacks of grain could be raised or lowered. The Barn was so eye catching that it’s design was soon imitated by a Major Hall, who built a similar structure in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin.

St. Mary’s Church

St. Mary’s Church, Leixlip, was built on the site of an ancient church soon after the Normans, under Strongbow invaded Ireland in 1172. The church stands at the confluence of the Liffey and the Rye rivers, which here forms the historic boundary between the Kingdoms of Leinster and Brega. However it was attacked as early as 1317 by Robert Bruce, King of Scotland who destroyed all but the tower. The tower which dates from the 12 th century is a fine example of Norman architecture and has national monument status. It is believed that it was constructed at the same time as Leixlip Castle in 1172. Local folklore suggests that there exists an underground passage which connects the tower to the castle although no evidence has been uncovered to substantiate this. Several important figures have been buried in the graveyard, this includes Archbishop Price who was responsible for helping Arthur Guinness set up his brewery. In the 17 th century a major reconstruction of the church took place. Restoration of the church began again in late 1994 with the assistance of FÁS. The ancient boundary wall has been rebuilt, the graveyard and headstones have been repaired. Church Service takes place on Sunday Mornings at 11.30.

History of Leixlip The history of Leixlip is based around its unique location; the meeting point of two of Ireland’s oldest rivers The River Liffey and Rye Water. The name Leixlip comes from the Norse name meaning Salmon’s Leaping Place. The area is rich in nutrients and nature has provided a natural course for salmon to spawn. Stone age settlements date back to 5,500 years ago on the bank of the Liffey at Cooldrinagh, on the Southeast side of Leixlip. Vikings invasions were common in Europe around 800 A.D. In Leixlip, the Battle of Confey began circa 917 A.D. Viking battles raged in Ireland for 100 years until an Irish victory lead by Brian Boru was celebrated in 1014 A.D. Two hundred years later saw the beginning of the construction of Leixlip Castle which was built during Norman times in 1172, at the confluence of the River Liffey and Rye Water. This castle is one of the oldest continuously inhabited buildings in Ireland and is currently owned by Hon. Desmond Guinness, founder of the Irish Georgian Society. The King of Scotland Robert Bruce and his brother Edward invaded Ireland in 1315. During this invasion Leixlip Castle was attacked, however after four days of battle the Scottish brothers retreated leaving the church in flames but parts of Leixlip castle remained intact. The church and the castle were left derelict for the following 335years while the country was in political turmoil. Sir Nicholas Whyte’s family became the occupants of Leixlip Castle in 1569. The castle was again attacked in the War of the Forties (1640’s) when the bridge over the Liffey between Cooldrinagh and Leixlip Castle was destroyed in 1648. During the following years Dublin rose in cultural stature and became recognised as the second major city within the British Empire. In 1734 Leixlip toll bridge was erected over the River Liffey where travellers paid a halfpenny toll. Members of the Georgian Society travelled from the British Isles to witness the salmon making their journey up the river Liffey and Rye. In 1732 the Archbishop of Cashel Dr. Arthur Price invested money into a small brewery on the banks of the River Liffey near Leixlip. He paid two brothers Richard Guinness and Arthur Guinness one hundred pounds each to experiment in the brewery. In 1758 the Guinness brothers acquired a larger premises (now the famous Guinness Brewery) located at St James’s Gate in Dublin City Centre. The Guinness recipe is still made with water sourced from Kildare and is recognised as a worldwide recipe. During the 1700’s Leixlip Castle was owned by William Conolly. Conolly’s fortune also gave Leixlip another famous heritage site, the Wonderful Barn. It was built in 1743 as a charitable gesture to inspire employment for the poor. It was also used to safeguard the harvest from various raids made by the O’ Toole and O’ Byrne clans. Being close to the capital, Leixlip became a resting place for middle classes. Having extensive water power, various forms of mills were established: corn, iron, paper, flax, flock, linen-printing and lastly saw mills; these and agriculture provided employment. The town’s central structure was mostly completed by 1820 and remains essentially thus today, despite the effects of the never ending commercial development in this past 40 years. The Victorian period brought an important development - electricity. In 1948 the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) completed the construction of a dam, 24 metres high and 100 metres wide, creating a 100-acre lake, submerging the Salmon Leap but creating 38,000V of electricity for transmission. In 1969 the construction of large housing estates began in the areas surrounding Leixlip village. This made the area very attractive to commuters. With the many ways to access Dublin City Centre, many people moved to Leixlip from the West of Ireland. The abundant water supply and the easy access to Dublin remain the advantages for businesses. The Intel Corporation established its largest factory outside the USA in Leixlip. Hewlett Packard also set up a manufacturing and banking business on the southwest of the town. Together they provide a large percentage of the employment in County Kildare. Leixlip is one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland and certainly the largest in Kildare with a total population estimating around 15,000 people.

Looking for the nearest ATM cash machine? Or perhaps your unsure of the

tipping etiquette in Ireland? Banks

Generally, in the Republic of Ireland the banking hours of business are Monday to Friday from 10am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 4pm hours. Some branches open during lunchtime and most open late one day a week (Thursday in Dublin). In Northern Ireland, banks in main towns are open 9.30am4.30pm Mon-Fri. Elsewhere, some may close from 12.30pm1.30pm. In small villages, the bank may not open every day, so get cash in bigger centres. Building society banks are open longer (and, often, on Saturday).

Money

The Euro is the currency in the Republic of Ireland and Sterling in Northern Ireland. Both have 100 denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50. Notes are issued in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100. Some areas near the border can operate on a dual currency basis. In Northern Ireland it is very common for the banks to issue their own notes which some people may not accept in the UK due to unfamiliarity.

Tipping

Hotels and restaurants often add 10-15% to the bill especially for large parties. This is not mandatory in the Republic of Ireland but is normal and of course, tipping always appreciated. Tipping in pubs is unusual except for table service.
