TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Drogheda leaps and bounds across the mighty River Boyne, its inhabitants crossing the expanse of water every day as they go about their daily business. The Boyne is the lifeblood of the town, as it has been for centuries, carrying with it thousands of years of history and sights that can be found nowhere else in the world.
This one town is famous for its music, festivals, castles, stately homes, passage tombs, towers, churches, beaches, race courses, fishing, fun parks, pubs, clubs, theatre, restaurants, and shopping.
Slane Castle – Historical home of rock The 1701 Slane Castle has a history as colourful as the artists it hosts each year at its many concerts. This iconic venue has seen Queen, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, REM, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Oasis, Kings Of Leon and many more entertain up to 80,000 people at a time. U2 lived in the castle while recording their album, The Unforgettable Fire, and have played the venue three times to date.
A lifetime of aristocracy, architecture, a raging fire, history and rock ‘n’ roll have culminated to make this stunning castle an international star. Coincide your visit to Drogheda with a Slane Castle concert or take a tour of the castle, walk the grounds and enjoy a coffee where King George IV of England spent much of his time.
Battle of the Boyne Just a short distance away, along the banks of the river, the Battle of the Boyne was fought on 1st July 1690. Opposing monarchs, King William III and his fatherin-law, King James II, had armies of 36,000 and 25,000 men respectively; the largest number of troops ever sent out to an Irish battlefield. The Kings fought for the British throne, French dominance in Europe and religious power in Ireland.
William’s camp was on the north side of the river. James’s was on the south side, with the two armies facing each other. All of the fighting took place on the south bank of the river and approximately 1,500 were killed at the battle. The battle, won by William, was a turning point in James’ unsuccessful attempt to regain the crown and ultimately helped ensure the continuation of Protestant ascendancy in Ireland. 24 www.westcourt.ie

visitors can’t help but be impressed by the genius that was involved in designing and constructing this masterpiece. Along with the similar structures of nearby Knowth and Dowth, Newgrange has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site.
At dawn every winter solstice, the rising sun aligns with the roof-box over the entrance to the tomb and the light fills the passage, gradually making its way to the foot of the chamber and reaching the back wall. The whole “light show” lasts for around nine minutes and is an astounding feat of engineering as the accuracy of the timetelling device that dates back 5,000 years is a testament to

Monasterboice Inn was the home of Thomas, brother of General Patrick Sarsfield, at the time of the Battle of the Boyne. When the day was lost, Thomas's throat was cut, and so he died, in Shop Street, in Drogheda. A 100 years later the patriot, Charles Hamilton Teeling, fleeing from capture in 1798, having swam the river Boyne on horseback, rode for succour to what was then the Monasterboice Inn in which you stand today. Engraved on a plaque on the outside of the Sarsfield room you can see the date 1786 and initials P.S.

Golfing & RACING Drogheda and the Boyne Valley have the best of all worlds with grassy plains, towering hills, long stretches of beach and intriguing coastlines all poised and ready to become a mecca for golf and horse racing lovers the world over.
“See you on the hill” is a common refrain when in and around the town of Drogheda. This hill in question is the Hill of Crockafotha and the occasion is any one of the two racing festivals held at Bellewstown racecourse, atop the hill, during the
summer. The racecourse offers a glorious view of the Mountains of Mourne to the north and the Irish Sea to the east. The first recorded race meeting at Bellewstown dates back to 1726 and a huge betting coup is said to have been pulled off at the Meath track by Barney Curley in 1975, believed to have bagged young Curley the equivalent of €1.7 million in today’s figures. Miraculously always blessed with good weather, the festivals are something of a holiday day for the locals and the atmosphere is unbeatable. Laytown strand races is one of a kind, the only beach race meeting in the country run under
the rules of the Turf Club racing authority. The first recorded race dates back to 1868, in conjunction with the Boyne Regatta. The beach is checked constantly in the weeks leading up to the race day to determine its suitability and safety and the tides are watched closely. The colour, movement and excitement of a day at Laytown races has been likened to a Viking raid upon these shores. Seapoint Championship Golf Links is one of only 150 Links courses in the world and hosted the Irish PGA Championship in both 2010 and 2011. June 2014 at Seapoint means the Irish Amateur Close Championship, previously
won by Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington, Peter Lawrie, Darren Clarke, Paul Mc Ginley and Shane Lowry, pencilled in for June 2014, this ambitious club shows no signs of slowing down. County Louth Golf Club in Baltray is just four miles from Drogheda, at the mouth of the River Boyne. Golf’s Digest Top 100 has it rated as a “Hidden Gem” and it is one of the top twenty five courses in the British Isles and top six in Ireland. It has been known to be ferocious and also benign, offering something to suit all handicaps but never to be taken lightly.

HISTORICAL HOUSES & GARDENS If grand castles, stately homes, perfectly manicured gardens and quaint cottages are your cup of tea, then you’ve hit the jackpot. Beaulieu Historical House and Gardens, Trim Castle, Loughcrew House and Gardens, Rokeby Hall, Ledwidge Cottage and Museum and Slane Castle are all easily accessible from Drogheda with each different to the next. Built in 1660-1666,
Beaulieu House is
a real treat. A stunning building, it has excellent family portraits and a wonderful art collection. It also features a Classic Car Museum and its private family church on the 36 www.westcourt.ie
grounds has a mid 15thcentury cadaver tombstone set against one of the walls. Only about a dozen such tombstones survive in Ireland. As it is a family home, it is not open all day every day, so it is best to check times or to arrange an appointment prior to visiting.
Trim Castle is the
largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. Construction began in 1176. The stronghold of the castle, a massive three-storey keep, was built on the site of an earlier wooden fortress. A huge twenty-sided tower, cruciform in shape, it was protected by a ditch, curtain
wall and a moat. Renovated in 2000, the site is an extremely popular visitor destination so be sure to arrive early. Take a trip to the mystical and fantastical
Loughcrew House and Gardens with its
delightful water-gardens, fantasy mill, grassy roofed grotto, pillars and fairy sculptures, with plenty for children including the watermill cascade, hidden reptiles, giant bugs and fairies.
Rokeby Hall is today
considered to be one of the most significant historic country houses remaining
in Co. Louth. This Georgian house was built by Francis Johnston around 1785 for Archbishop Richard Robinson and is open to visitors for guided tours. Hailed as one of Ireland’s greatest poets, Francis Ledwidge was born in Slane, about 10km west of Drogheda. The cottage where he was born is now a museum that pays homage to his life and work. Most of his poetry focused on nature, although his sympathy for the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising led him to write perhaps one of his most famous poems, Lament for Thomas MacDonagh.
activities in Drogheda Drogheda is a one-stopshop for activities of all types. Whether you have a young family to entertain, are intent on filling every last minute or are enjoying a romantic getaway, you’ll be spoiled for choice. If theme parks are the order of the day, you could try a trip to Funtasia Waterpark. 30,000 sq feet of rippling, waving, gushing, flowing, cascading, exhilarating water fun. The first of its kind in Ireland, this indoor water park suits kids of all ages. A giant pirate’s head dominates the whole park and fills up with over 500 litres of water, suddenly and unexpectedly drenching the unsuspecting crowd below. The braver of the group will enjoy the adrenaline pumping whiteknuckle speed slides while
the younger members will love the pirate’s cove play area with its water spraying cannons, a coffee dock, a family Jacuzzi, gift shop and a whole lot more besides.
Tayto Park is family
heaven. Mr Tayto has gone out of his way to ensure that his guests will never have a dull moment. Younger children will love the Tiny Taters Patch playground, the Spudhara sand play area, the animal park, the tepees, the teahouse in the tree house and the search for hidden gems, to name but a few attractions. Older children won’t know where to begin as they take on the thrilling Zip Line Extreme, the Sky Walk, the Tayto Twister and visit the tigers, lizards, buffalo and meerkats of the park. There’s plenty
for parents too as the Tayto Park Lodge has a restaurant with a full menu so fast food is not the only option. Many of the stunning beaches in the area are ideal for swimming and watersports or you could spend a rainy day at any of the nearby leisure centres. Don’t forget Drogheda is right on the Boyne so kayaking enthusiasts need look no further. The River Boyne is not safe for swimming but is ideal for kayaking and canoeing with plenty of adventure centres in the area to choose from. The proximity to the sea also makes Drogheda perfect for sailing and surfing. Every dreamed of playing at Wimbledon? Well if the
reality is a little out of your reach, why not try the next best thing? Laytown and Bettystown Lawn Tennis club was founded over 100 years ago and has five floodlit Savannah courts all in immaculate condition. Take an urban turn and spend the day wandering through Highlanes Gallery. The gallery is set in a renovated church that has been described as “art itself”. With a fabulous collection of work, exciting exhibitions regularly on show and the delicious Relish restaurant waiting for you, it’s a perfect rainy day activity. A stroll through the town will open up a myriad of opportunities so if you haven’t got a plan, let Drogheda lead you. You won’t regret it. www.westcourt.ie 37
