TENEBRAE HOLY WEEK FESTIVAL
Tenebrae launches its inaugural Holy Week Festival at St John’s Smith Square which, from Palm Sunday to Holy Saturday, will host workshops, lunchtime performances and evening concerts exploring a vast range of music in celebration of Holy Week. Alongside this there will be a sequence of the devotional Tenebrae settings and responses performed late at night on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday by Tenebrae Consort which will be free for the public to attend. ‘Tenebrae’, meaning ‘shadows/darkness’ in Latin, is the name given to a series of religious services during Holy Week. The services are distinctive through their use of candles alongside readings and psalms which are either sung or recited. Candlelit services resonate with Tenebrae’s unique approach to performance, using candelabra wherever possible for dramatic effect, inspiring Nigel Short to curate this festival. The festival will welcome the BBC Singers, The Hanover Band, National Youth Chamber Choir, Polyphony, Voces8 and more, with the full line-up being announced on October 1st. The Tenebrae Effect The Tenebrae Effect is Tenebrae’s inspiring choral development initiative that provides an insight into the elements which make Tenebrae’s sound and interpretation to music so unique. It is designed to challenge and advance every participant, whilst giving singers the opportunity to learn in a friendly and challenging environment alongside professional singers from the choir. “Most enjoyable workshop I have ever attended. A real pleasure to find such a high skill level in a workshop.” “This is exactly what I came for – to experience a high level of precision and passion! The workshop was great, exacting and demanding but with warmth and a light touch.”

Tenebrae Associate Artists Scheme Tenebrae presents a unique professional programme to help develop the most highly-skilled young choral singers in the UK whilst heralding a new chapter in Tenebrae’s commitment to the development of emerging vocal talent. The Associate Artist positions are a year-long fellowship providing experience in both live and recorded performance ensemble work through active engagement with Tenebrae’s national and international performance and recording schedule throughout the concert season. They will also receive training in music pedagogy and go on to put this into practice through a series of new education and community partnerships. In this way Tenebrae’s Associate Artists will gain invaluable first-hand experience of the work of a professional singer and develop their musicianship and choral skills under the leadership of Nigel Short – one of the UK’s most acclaimed choral conductors.
