FOREWORD

Bernhard Kellner, Editor-in-Chief & Hendrik teNeues, Publisher

by Hendrik teNeues and Bernhard Kellner

We open our wide-ranging Fall 2017 Catalog with the magnificently original dog portraits of Dog People. Photographer Sandra Müller humorously and astutely outfits her dog subjects in archetypal human wear in order to decipher their souls in the most relatable of ways, with each pet portrait accompanied by an amusing canine personality profile. You will marvel at the humane elephant portraits by Joachim Schmeisser, who has worked with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust for many years, in his book, Elephants in Heaven. Star author Katharina von der Leyen persuades readers, in 77 Dates with Your Dog, to enjoy shared experiences with their beloved four-legged friends. Another new title, Veggie Hotels, fills a gap in the international book market: we have compiled the best hotels from Berlin to Bali to ensure that vegetarians and vegans can go on vacation and enjoy the food just as much as the sights! To round out the volume, we include the best recipes from the featured hotels that cater to this ever-popular lifestyle. We have also completely redesigned our globally-popular Living in Style series. In the new volumes, we introduce the most demanding interior projects from major cities around the world. One of the new additions to the series, How We Live, provides a private look into the houses and apartments of celebrities.

And we have multiple top-notch gift ideas for men this year: The Equestrian World gives a gorgeous overview of riding sports, The Hunting Book will make any hunter’s heart skip a beat, and Ultimate Toys for Men is the dream wish list for any man. And for anyone who has gasoline running in his veins, we highly recommend The Harley-Davidson Book and The Porsche Book Vol. 2. Things take an athletic turn with Dirk Nowitzki, the German wunderkind who became a worldwide basketball superstar. Bernhard Hartmann’s sweeping views of contemporary New York in the photography book of the same name will mesmerize you as much as the historically-rich and culturallyfascinating images of the great Elliott Erwitt in his book, Cuba. With pictures from the 1960s and today, Erwitt brings us a vivid and illuminating time capsule of this eventful island nation. And to close with a special highlight, we present Matthew Rolston, legendary celebrity photographer. In Hollywood Royale, we see his portraits of iconic 1980s superstars, including Madonna, George Michael, Michael Jackson, and Prince. You’ll find even more inspiration on the following pages. As always, thank you for your interest!

INSECTA

CHARLES & ADRIENNE NESBIT For every one human on earth, there are two million insects, co-existing with us in daily life, largely unseen and unappreciated. Often deemed a nuisance when we do come across them, these tiny creatures are an indispensable life force, vital to the ecosystem and basic functioning of planet Earth. Equal parts discovery and entertainment, Insecta presents a spectacular array of super high-resolution, “hyper-real” color photographs of bugs and insects, magnified by 500% or more. As a graphic and educational counterpart, the insect name is translated into five main languages and paired with each sculptural, jewel-like close-up image of the bug in this visually-arresting, large-format photography book. Readers will be dazzled by the intricate anatomy, vivid coloration, and complex patterns of an interesting variety of bug species whose widely-differing details, are not visible to the naked eye. Some of the insect species will be instantly recognizable, others are so rare and exotic—the viewer has possibly never seen them before! In addition, fun and informative scientific text accompanies each bug type to remind us of the ever-fascinating masterful design and machinery inherent to the natural world. Primary author CHARLES NESBIT is an art and commercial photographer based in New York. With an M.F.A in Photography from Yale Art School, he has a lengthy roster of high-profile corporate clients in his portfolio, along with art photography known for its clear, simple, and defined still life imagery captured from a unique perspective. Nesbit’s work is held by a number of private collectors, and three of his insect images, reproduced at six-feet tall, have recently been sold.

SANDRA MÜLLER

DOG PEOPLE

SANDRA MÜLLER DOG PEOPLE

What dog owner hasn’t done this? You anthropomorphize your four-legged friend, put thoughts and feelings into his or her head that he or she almost certainly doesn’t have, and basically turn your pet into a four-legged person. That is exactly how photographer Sandra Müller feels about her dog Maja—who inspired Dog People—the book that provides hilarious and creative photographic answers to the question: “What kind of person would this dog be?” Whether it’s Great Dane Holly as a couch potato or “Gismo” riding a Harley, these images and more make up the unforgettable and endearing collection of portraits of man’s best friend in Dog People. From the author’s foreword: “No, this book is not meant to be a fashion show for dogs and dog owners—dogs are not dolls and should only have clothes put on them when medically necessary. This book is simply a thought experiment: what kind of person would my dog be? Let’s be honest: who hasn’t given his or her dog a lengthy explanation of which the dog seems to listen intently and surely seems to understand every word? Yes, yes, I know… YOUR dog understands every word, just like mine!” The book is a colorful parade of dogs, from Giant Schnauzers to Pugs, from registered purebreds to street mutts. There is also a humorous description of each dog explaining how the outfit was chosen to make the particular animal a Dog Man or Dog Lady. For example, take “Gisbert,” a Pug who would surely be a doctor if he were human—as he loves his vet so much that all you have to do is say “Dr. Uwe” and he pricks his ears—as much as any Pug can prick his ears, at least.

SANDRA MÜLLER who is now twenty-three, bought her first SLR camera at fourteen. She has been a big animal lover since childhood—from guinea pigs to her aunt’s dog, with whom she spent entire summer vacations. Today, she is the proud owner of Maja, the “most beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog mix in the world,” (of course, she is in the book!) and has found her calling in photography. She specializes in portraits of people and dogs. She feels it is very important to capture the unique personality of each of her subjects, two-legged or four-legged, in each shot. In Dog People, she has outdone herself in a whole new way. Surprising answers to the question: What if your dog were human? 83 dogs and a panoply of human characters—a delightful treat for all dog lovers

My Favorite Book “Sandra Müller is a terrific new find with a witty take on our canine companions. A book with real bestseller potential. Our office dog Jette agrees! There will be great non-book articles to follow this summer. I love it.” Michael Schönberger, Director of Sales

ELLIOTT ERWITT

CUBA FOREWORD BY HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR. In 1964, while on assignment for Newsweek magazine, photojournalist Elliott Erwitt spent a week in Cuba as a guest of Fidel Castro. There, he captured now-iconic photographs of the beloved Cuban president along with the revolutionary leader Che Guevara. Over fifty years later, coinciding with restored diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States, Erwitt returned to document both its urban and rural landscapes, and—most prominently—the people of this fascinating nation. Presented in a book for the very first time, Erwitt’s captivating black-and-white photographs offer an intimate look into this intriguing Caribbean island. From candid glimpses of Fidel Castro to Havana’s breathtaking architectural details and scenes of rural life, Cuba reflects an in-depth visual exploration that unveils the heart and soul of the country. Complete with anecdotal recollections penned by Erwitt himself (for example, the time when Che Guevara offered him a box of cigars) and a compelling foreword written by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., this stunning tome isn’t a mere chronicling of Cuba’s people and places—it’s a historical record of a nation in flux as it opens up to the rest of the world.

NEW YORK

BERNHARD HARTMANN

PHOTOGR APHY NE W

NEW YORK

BERNHARD HARTMANN New York is probably the most photographed city in the world. It is hard to resist the fascination for the Big Apple, and many have tried to visually capture the singularly unique “Empire State of Mind.” It’s not just the classic landmarks that belong to an emotional portrait of the metropolis, but also the bustling life in the urban canyons of Manhattan and its neighborhoods. And this is why Bernhard Hartmann never approaches New York City from just one perspective. He employs multiple angles: brilliant studies that make the sculptural details of architectural icons, both old and new, come alive, alongside snapshots of ephemeral, shadowy pedestrians hurrying by on rain-soaked asphalt illuminated by neon sign reflections. Hartmann is especially taken with the city’s lights, as his black-and-white photos twinkle in an almost magical way. His color photographs possess a nearhypnotic quality that make the nighttime neon-lit streets feel like an homage to decades past, and his aerial photos almost tangibly pull you into the scene. Despite the technical refinement and exquisite detail of Hartmann’s photos, their unequalled atmospheric intensity is what truly makes them special: he combines the latest photographic techniques with the glamour of historic pictures. The result is a dazzling, contemporary portrait of the most amazing city in the world, one that—like your own first visit to New York—you will never forget.

9 783961 710270

BERNHARD HARTMANN was born in 1955 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and began working as a photographer for a major German newspaper at the age of 18. While earning his law degree, he taught himself the art of landscape and architectural photography. In addition to solo and group exhibitions his photos have appeared in international publications and won awards including Sony Awards, Epson International Pano Awards, and International Color Awards. Hartmann particularly enjoys photographing buildings devoted to the arts. He has created photo series of opera houses, theaters, and country estates in Europe. In 2016, Hartmann published his bestseller, Havana, with teNeues.

ZOO PORTRAITS YAGO PARTAL

While a fantastic cause, can the task of protecting animal rights and habitats also be fun? The answer for Spanish photographer Yago Partal is “yes!” as he joyfully embraces important environmental activism with his form of inventive entertainment. His aim is to increase our awareness of animals who need protection—from the Amur leopard to the plains zebra—with his Zoo Portraits project, which launched in 2013. The project presents animals in anthropomorphized form, wearing clothing and accessories that echo the animal’s temperament and preferred habitat. It is not Partal’s intention to create distance or make light of the animals, but rather to make people think and nudge them to get involved in protecting animals via pictures, education, and awareness. Mission accomplished: Yago Partal’s wonderful animal portraits have found a huge audience, with media like CBS and the Daily Mail reporting enthusiastically on the phenomenon. Beautiful, functional products including iPhone cases and even clothes hangers are available for purchase under the Zoo Portraits label. Ten percent of all proceeds are donated to animal welfare organizations. The book has the same objective: to make people smile as well as inform them. In addition to the unique pictures, there is information on each animal’s habitat, size, and population as well as interesting and surprising facts. Presented in a clear and attractive format, this book is equally exciting for children and adults.

9 783961 710461

YAGO PARTAL studied visual arts at the University of Barcelona. One of his creative projects gave him the inspiration for Zoo Portraits. With his enthusiasm for animals, cartoons, and fashion, he began experimenting with the popular anthropomorphization of animals; the result was a cosmos of unique artworks. Yago Partal’s work has been the subject of shows in Barcelona, London, Montreal, and Tokyo. His customers include world-renowned companies such as Apple and Body Shop.

SERGE RAMELLI VENICE

With its breathtaking marble palazzi and cathedrals, labyrinth-like azure canals, and palpable spellbinding energy, Venice is a veritable feast for all the senses—and especially the eyes. Whether through casual iPhone snaps or professional-grade images, Venice is, without a doubt, one of the most photographed locations on earth. But it’s never been captured quite like this before. Inspired by its myriad charms and undeniable allure, French photographer Serge Ramelli set out to photograph the mythic Italian city with his signature dramatic flair. Harnessing the artistic effects of black-and-white photography, Ramelli interprets Venice with a fascinating cinematic-infused style. From its bustling sites—such as the Piazza San Marco, Rialto Bridge, and Grand Canal—to its mysterious narrow alleyways, Ramelli takes readers on a stunning visual journey through Venice. In a photo of a cobblestoned street bathed in haunting moonlight, viewers can feel the city’s irresistible seduction and secrets. A shot of the opulent Saint Mark’s Basilica—devoid of its usual crowds of visitors—evokes a quiet beauty. While a scene of gondolas floating on tranquil lagoon waters invites quiet reflection. For longtime visitors, lifelong natives, aspiring tourists, and everyone in between, Serge Ramelli’s Venice truly reflects the poetry, splendor, and romance that characterize this beloved Italian city—making it the perfect title for any serious library of photography, travel, or art.

MATTHEW ROLSTON HOLLYWOOD ROYALE:

OUT OF THE SCHOOL OF LOS ANGELES One of a handful of artists to emerge from Andy Warhol’s celebrity-focused Interview magazine, Matthew Rolston is a well-established icon of Hollywood photography. Alongside such luminaries as Herb Ritts and Greg Gorman, Rolston was a member of an influential group of photographers (among them, Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz, and Steven Meisel) who came from the 1980s magazine scene. Rolston helped define the era’s take on celebrity imagemaking, gender bending, and much more. Edited by long-time Los Angeles–based gallerist and curator David Fahey, this book—Rolston’s fourth monograph—presents a stunning array of portraits that beautifully and succinctly capture the decade and its myriad talents. From Michael Jackson and Madonna, to Prince, George Michael, and Cyndi Lauper, the selection of images reflects a seamless blend of style, skill, and scintillation. This volume features over 100 mesmerizing photographs selected from Rolston’s extensive body of work, centering on his unforgettable portraits of the era’s most famous personalities. With essays by authors Pat Hackett, Andy Warhol’s longtime biographer and diarist; Colin Westerbeck, noted photographic curator and expert on American photographer Irving Penn; and Charles Churchward, longtime creative director of Vogue magazine and author of The Golden Hour, a definitive biography of Herb Ritts, Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles, paints a fascinating picture of an indelible imagemaker and the movie stars, models, and artists he immortalized during this period. Rolston’s photographs recall the glamour of Old Hollywood with postmodern irony, helping to point the way towards the cult of fame we live with today.

MATTHEW ROLSTON is an artist who works in photography and video. In 1977, Rolston was ‘discovered’ by Andy Warhol, who commissioned portraits for protocelebrity magazine, Interview, followed by assignments for Rolling Stone from founding editor Jann Wenner, and soon after, by Vanity Fair, under editors Tina Brown and later, Graydon Carter. Rolston’s 1980s images are notable for their glamorous lighting and detail-rich sets. His work has helped define the contemporary aesthetics of American portrait photography. Rolston’s photographs have been exhibited worldwide and are in the permanent collections of LACMA and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others. An impressive exhibition of the works will highlight this publication. A selection of over 30 images will travel across Europe and the United States. This volume contains a veritable compendium of Rolston’s innovative photographic techniques. The images range from classic vintage-style 8x10 camera portraits to more stylized experiments in cross-processing, multiple exposure, and high-contrast color.

LAURENT BAHEUX ICE IS BLACK

From majestic glaciers to vast frozen plains as far as the eye can see, ice is just as important to the world’s ecosystems as water, air, and trees. And yet its presence and vital role on Earth is increasingly threatened by the effects of global warming and population growth—the inspiration behind French photographer Laurent Baheux’s latest endeavor, Ice is Black. Through breathtaking blackand-white images, Baheux captures the world’s most beautiful icy landscapes and the fascinating animals that inhabit them. We get close to creatures and landscapes that seem to be taken out of time. Taken in such far-flung lands as Norway, Iceland, and Canada, Baheux’s images present polar bears and their cubs, foxes frolicking in snow, and seals navigating icy waters. While the photographs convey evocative beauty, they also act as a call to action to protect these magnificent icy lands and the creatures that rely on them.

LAURENT BAHEUX is a French nature photographer and activist who is the author of The Family Album of Wild Africa, published by teNeues in 2015. DIRK NOWITZKI DINO REISNER

SPORTS NEW

DIRK NOWITZKI THE GERMAN GIANT DINO REISNER

What do Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Wilt Chamberlain have in common? They are all basketball legends, and the only five NBA players ranked higher on the all-time points list than Dirk Nowitzki. The giant man from Unterfranken is the only non-American in this elite group. And then came March 7th, 2017: in the second period of a game against the LA Lakers, Nowitzki fires off his patented one-legged fadeaway shot and scores. This basket allows him to break the 30,000-point mark! On his way to becoming a cult figure in the sport, Nowitzki has long since reached the highest level. This photo volume shows how it all happened. The boy from Würzburg became a Bundesliga and national team player, then made the leap to the NBA, made a name for himself there, won a championship, broke records, and proved himself to be a top-level player, game after game, for nearly 20 years. Dino Reisner describes not only the big picture behind this stellar career, but also the little anecdotes and important people who have crossed Nowitzki’s path over the years. An attractive and dynamic layout with 125 spectacular and emotional photographs makes this book a true pleasure and treasure for basketball fans. DINO REISNER works as a freelance journalist for Bild, Kicker and Sky; his previous publications include two books about Dirk Nowitzki (German Wunderkind, 2004, and The Dirk Nowitzki Story, 2010) as well as a biography of Pep Guardiola.

From the DJK Würzburg to becoming bronze medal winner at the 2002 World Championships in the USA, from German Wunderkind to NBA champion and sixth on the NBA’s all-time scorers list A dynamic, high-quality photo volume with impressive large-scale photos; a celebration of a sports superstar and a human story well beyond statistics and results

My Favorite Book “Dirk Nowitzki is an absolute giant. He’s on the same level with current NBA superstars like LeBron James and Stephen Curry. He’s the only German who has been so successful in the NBA for so many years. A nice photo book about him is long overdue.” Marten Dirmeier, Trainee

The Equestrian World is the best way to take a little break from the day-to-day stresses and dive into this fantastic world. Or if you’d like to take the reins yourself, the book also describes luxurious destination resorts, glorious clubs, and rider-friendly hotels where you can get away and get a fresh new perspective on the world.

ULTIMATE TOYS FOR MEN MICHAEL BRUNNBAUER

There are only two notable differences between toys for little boys and toys for grown-up boys: the toys get bigger with age—and more expensive. Matchbox cars give way to high-end sports cars, model boats become motorboats and sailing yachts, and the plastic wristwatch turns into a Swiss chronograph with a perpetual calendar and minute repeater. The Toys for Men series has always stayed abreast of this male drive to play; in the latest volume, we present the ultimate wish list, a selection of the most exclusive, most innovative, and most luxurious toys that men with money can buy. Of course, the list includes the classic male fantasies of Lear jets, megayachts, and super sports cars—the truly giant and great things that move men in the air, on water, or on land. But it also includes the little gadgets—from headphones and wristwatches to SLR cameras—that make tech-loving men’s hearts beat a little faster. We also include the vices that speak to connoisseurs, like that special bottle of French wine, Scottish whiskey, or Cuban cigars. And last but not least, we include one of the greatest luxuries of all: having a product tailored to you and you alone, bespoke-style. But we’re not just talking about customtailored suits. Cars, golf clubs, skis, nearly everything today can be customized to suit your particular tastes. If you’re searching for the ultimate toys for the gentleman who has everything, you’ll hit pay dirt here. Because as philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche already knew, “There is a child hidden in every man: and it wants to play.”

MICHAEL BRUNNBAUER studied business administration at the European Business School (EBS) in Oestrich-Winkel and journalism at the German Journalist School (DJS). He is also a freelance writer for magazines and newspapers including Robb Report, Weltwoche and Wired. He writes primarily about cars, watches, consumer electronics, interiors, and design. Anyone who has ever strolled through the city’s various neighborhoods, passed its modern skyscrapers, and entered into one of the many Georgian or Victorian buildings, has probably experienced a great curiosity, if not envy, about residing in this genteel and historical, yet thoroughly modern metropolis. Examples of breathtaking design abound in Living in Style London, as readers will see how London interior designers and architects create residences perfectly tailored to the people who live there, while making optimal use of the available space. Innovative living spaces and furnishing concepts freed from transitory trends and the talented visionaries who created them. Meet internationally-recognized icons and discover talented newcomers to the Dutch design and architecture scene like Joyce Urbanus, Dax Roll, and James van der Velde. Living in Style Amsterdam is a timelessly beautiful photo book that will provide a wide range of ideas for every design lover and whet your appetite for your next trip to this inspiring city!

LIVING IN STYLE HOW WE LIVE

ADRIANO SACK AND DAGMAR VON TAUBE The strange piece of art that hangs over the bed. The well-organized sneaker collection. Artifacts—sinfully expensive or of sentimental value—from all over the world. The things you find in other people’s homes spark the imagination, inspire one’s own design efforts, and speak volumes about the character, dreams, and essence of the residents. Over the past years, WELT AM SONNTAG visited the homes of creative workers, artists, and style influencers all over the world and shared them with us via home stories: the daughter of design icon Verner Panton, the son of the legendary artist, Fornasetti, an attorney with a mania for collecting, a jewelry designer in London, an American hairstylist to the stars, and Berlin’s most controversial architect. Instead of high-gloss photography productions where every object is carefully placed at the correct angle in order to showcase “perfect” taste, the images here are intimate encounters on familiar terrain that give us insight into unexplored worlds: private, curious, and eccentric. Style experts and co-authors, Adriano Sack and Dagmar von Taube, have compiled these visual short stories into a fascinating photo volume that is a wonderful source of ideas for your own home—the Mick Jagger portrait by Andy Warhol above the fireplace mantle, the vase you sculpted and fired yourself, and the terribly impractical gigantic sculpture in the dining room that just make life better. In other words, do try this at home!

ADRIANO SACK is an author and head of the style department at WELT AM SONNTAG. He lived in New York for several years, where he wrote books, founded the Internet platform and magazine ilikemystyle, drank too much tequila with artist Terence Koh in his brilliantly white studio, and talked about German expressionism with Tom Wolfe. His books have been translated into numerous languages. He moved back to Berlin in 2011 and finds the city much better than its reputation would suggest. Hamburg native DAGMAR VON TAUBE has called Berlin home for years. As chief reporter for WELT AM SONNTAG, she meets the great and special people of our time, from Hillary Clinton to Roman Polanski, and creates portraits of them in incisive interviews. She fought about kitsch with Jeff Koons and was invited by Eliette von Karajan to her house in Saint Tropez for three days, where von Karajan welcomed von Taube with goulash in 100degree weather. Madame then disappeared into her seawater pool—stark naked. The interview began. Von Taube was a correspondent in New York; on the side, she packed gift baskets for stars like Aretha Franklin at highend grocer Dean & Deluca. In 2009, teNeues published her photo book Berlin Now.

THE ULTIMATE FERRARI BOOK Success is not founded on miracles, but is almost always the outcome of a clear concept—the pinnacle of an ambitious, even stridently innovative idea. However, the aura of Ferrari does indeed get close to something miraculous. What lies behind this phenomenon? What is the source of fascination for a brand whose creative designs are internationally recognized and enthusiastically received? Firstly, the miracle of Ferrari, even today—70 years after the company was founded—is still largely explained only because of the personality of Il Commendatore, Enzo Ferrari. Patience, passion, and even a ruthless streak, at his own and others’ expense, gave the brand, under the emblem of the Cavallino Rampante, the power to develop into what it represents today: the ultimate and most fascinating thing on four wheels. Next, the long list of international racing victories ranks as equally important. During the last 70 years of Ferrari, no class or contest that wasn’t an instant win went unchallenged. Last but not least, Ferrari is almost synonymous with aesthetics, elegance, and trend-setting design. The intense degree of visceral and impassioned devotion is the genuine power of a brand and its products. The third and perhaps most vital element making the miracle of Ferrari real—a book that traces the evolution of the miracle, while also defining the essential elements of emotional attractiveness.

THE PORSCHE BOOK VOL. 2

What an incredible milestone in the history of the sports car: in spring 2017, the Porsche 911 was made a millionaire. That is the number of models emblazoned with the legendary “9-1-1” produced by Porsche since 1963. What is the definition of the 911, of a Porsche?—the language of form and technical expertise. It is the ultimate sports car. Throughout the generations, every single 911 has fascinated owners and spectators alike. Even when a particular 911 series does not resemble its predecessor, the form, sound, and performance remain inspirational—the emotions are always on board! Dreams come alive, and not just for the guys. A Porsche driver is endowed with taste, technical prowess, a vision of the future, and the trappings of material success. The 356 laid the foundation for the myth of the Porsche, and it also formed the basis for models like the American Roadster, the 550, and the 718 RS 60 Spyder. Loyal companions include family members like the Boxster, Cayman, Panamera, Macan, and even the Cayenne. Out of the running, though unforgotten, are Porsche models like the 924, 944, or even 928. Motor racing cultivated the myth from 1951 until today. Decades later the names 904, 917, 962, and currently, the 919 Hybrid, are still legends. The Porsche Book Vol. 2 presents the history of Porsche with elegant photos and insightful texts. Small nuggets and anecdotes—largely unheard of—occasionally shine through. A spellbinding read for those inspired by the joy of a Porsche.

THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON BOOK They are a two-wheeled symbol of freedom: no other motorcycle brand in the world has the nearly mystical reputation of a Harley-Davidson. For more than a hundred years, this American classic from Milwaukee has shaped the motorcycle world. The fascination centers on the typical 45-degree, V2 engine. Over time, single-cylinder engines have come and gone from the Harley lineup, but the two-cylinder engine has been the defining style. Like a sculpture, it sits deep in the intricate tubular steel frame—an aesthetic revelation...and an auditory one as well. Once you’ve heard the gruff babbling of an Early Shovel, you’re addicted for life! This is a book about the power and beauty of the engines and the elegance and strength of these machines from Lake Michigan. It is an homage to the flatheads, knuckleheads, panheads, ironheads, the shovels and Evolutions, and the modern-day fuel injectors. Gliding on the roads with such an inspired feeling that will surely carry from today into the future, The Harley-Davidson Book is a visual journey through a tradition deeply rooted in the spirit of freedom of the USA. What would Easy Rider be without its iconic heroes, “Billy Bike” and “Captain America,” the most famous motorcycles in the world? This free-wheeling attitude is conveyed in opulent, photo-rich stories and articles about the unique Harley-Davidson lifestyle. It’s a road movie you can experience yourself, vibrating like an old knucklehead in its rigid frame. The authors are all passionate bikers who have been under the powerful twins’ spell since childhood. DIRK MANGARTZ has worked for decades for German and international magazines and was the editor-in-chief of

9 783961 710232

Custombike for more than a decade. He is the author and co-author of various motorcycle books, has a huge archive, and is actively involved in the development of motorcycle accessories, primarily for Harley-Davidson. SVEN WEDEMEYER moves on the boundary between photography and journalism. His pieces make the culture of mobility tangible as he documents stories and personalities in authentic photographs. This seasoned gearhead not only produces exciting work, he also brings his own custom bikes out on the road. PHILIPP WENTE, freelance photographer and editor at ramp, a magazine with a cultlike following, was already zinging around his parents’ yard on his racing-orange Puky push bike (with the cool pennant on the front fender!) while still in diapers. Now he has custom bikes to ride: a Ducati Pantah and a H-D Early Shovel FLH. Unfortunately, they don’t have cool pennants, which he deeply regrets.

Because asphalt is not enough—experience the Harley-Davidson lifestyle close up, which will also take you on the beach, the ice, or on steep walls An informative book about the motorcycle brand that is also a plea for freedom (not just) on two wheels 25 x 32 cm / 9 5 /6 x 12 3 /5 in. | c. 224 pp. | Hardcover with jacket | c. 250 color and b/w photographs English / German / French | Europe: August 2017 / Overseas: September 2017 ISBN 978-3-96171-023-2 € 49.90 $ 65 £ 45

JOACHIM SCHMEISSER ELEPHANTS IN HEAVEN

JOACHIM SCHMEISSER ELEPHANTS IN HEAVEN

Because elephants are pachyderms, a combination of two Greek roots meaning “thick skin,” one might think that nothing bothers them and that they lead quiet, safe lives. Nothing could be further from the truth: elephants have been hunted and killed for their ivory tusks since antiquity. And people often ignore the calves left behind, who must now live out their lives as traumatized and fearful orphans. Wildlife photographer Joachim Schmeisser made it his mission to document the story of these abandoned baby elephants. Through his sponsorship of elephants, he came into contact with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the world’s largest and most successful rescue and rehabilitation operation for orphaned elephants, headquartered in Nairobi. Professional veterinary technicians bottle feed the elephant calves until they are old enough to locate their own food. By living together with older elephant calves, they also learn the social rules governing elephant herds. After this phase is complete, the elephants are taken to one of the Trust’s rehabilitation stockades before they are released back into the wild. Joachim Schmeisser followed numerous elephants through the entire process and captured fascinating pictures from their arrival at the nursery all the way to their release back into the wild. Elephants in Heaven provides a visual record of how these traumatized elephants are raised in a place that is truly heavenly for them, offering a compelling behind-the-scenes look inside an elephant nursery. The touching animal portraits also convey the devastating consequences of poaching, because for Joachim Schmeisser, it’s about “beauty, fragility, transience, mindfulness, and about dignity and the equal standing of each individual.”

9 783961 710478

JOACHIM SCHMEISSER began his professional career as an advertising photographer. But in addition to his paid work, he always pursued side projects that had personal meaning to him, particularly those relating to humanity and topics relevant to society. He has won many international awards for his work, including the 2012 Hasselblad Masters Award. His work is exhibited around the world. Impressive pictures of a unique project that makes the consequences of poaching abundantly clear With a foreword by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, founder of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

My Favorite Book “To me, elephants just exude calmness and strength. This coffee table book has beautiful pictures of these fascinating animals and tells an interesting story as well. It raises awareness of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which does very important work rescuing orphaned elephant calves. The photos by Joachim Schmeisser do their part by making us aware of the issue.” Vivien Laurenz, International Sales Division

77 DATES WITH YOUR DOG KATHARINA VON DER LEYEN

With a big dollop of humor and affection, Katharina von der Leyen offers her expert advice in 77 Dates with Your Dog, suggesting 77 fun activities to enhance the relationship between dog owners and their four-legged friends—and have a good laugh in the process! For example, the seasoned dog expert recommends sharing a roast beef sandwich with your dog at least once—and sure, it could also be a bologna or cheese sandwich. Why? Because sharing food—or breaking bread together, to use a more biblical turn of phrase— connects not just people, but humans and their dogs. Going rowing together, as another example, is an excellent activity to see if your dog trusts you. The wobbling involved will make your dog a bit uneasy at first, but it will help him learn to rely on you. The book includes other joint activities from “jump in a lake together and swim” to “dig a deep hole together”—yes, actually, together! Von der Leyen explains in the book why these shared experiences can be so beneficial for people and their dogs, as well as provides other tips like the perfect canine massage technique. “Of course, it is only super for your dog at first, but you’ll be amazed at the energy that will suddenly spark between both of you,” promises the author. What to do on rainy days with a bored dog? Build an obstacle course in your living room. The first station could be a box with crumpled newspaper and hidden treats, and the second could be a pot with sunflower oil or an unusual-smelling toy to play with. Don’t worry, you don’t have to sniff along with your dog; you already did your part by building the course. After a good thorough round of sniffing and searching, your dog will be wonderfully tired.

9 783961 710591

Some of the “dates” are funny, some are surprising, but all of them have been field-tested with the author’s own dogs. Entertaining your dog is not the primary goal here— it’s about truly getting to know the living creature you are responsible for and enjoying time together...and occasionally making time to just be quiet and still with him: date number 77.

Journalist and author KATHARINA VON DER LEYEN is one of Germany’s most renowned dog writers. She has written numerous books as well as columns, articles, and how-to books about living with dogs that have appeared in Dogs and Bild am Sonntag, among others. She also publishes content regularly on her blog, Lumpi4.de Illustrator ELKE REINHART has insisted on having at least one dog in the house since the day she turned 18. She also creates illustrations with Gerhard Schlegel at her own agency, Laska Grafix, in Munich. She has also published many comics and graphic novels with various publishers under the Laska Comix label. www.laska.com

DANIELLA MIDENGE SEX & CIGARETTES

Strong women, accentuated by their beauty and sensuality, are the hallmark of fashion photographer Daniella Midenge. Her pictures evoke intimacy and passion, beyond the outer shell. Black-and-white or color, her photos have an incredible power of expression that draws the eye of men and women alike. Her unique style still shows the influence of photography greats like Peter Lindbergh and Herb Ritts. But, as a woman and a model herself, Daniella Midenge is at home both behind and in front of the camera, informing her art direction, staging, and hair and makeup—all of which she does herself. It’s no wonder she is reluctant to let others handle the processing of her photographs. A creative family, her love of high-concept fashion photos in old glossy magazines, and her work as a makeup artist all contributed to the many twists and turns on Midenge’s path to photography. But after her first contact with a camera, she never looked back. For the first time, Daniella Midenge’s best work is collected in a single volume: one that will leave you wanting to see more.

9 783961 710539

DANIELLA MIDENGE was born in Stockholm in 1982. After completing her degree with a concentration in photography, film, and advertising at the Riddarfjärds skolan, she worked in a studio for the restoration of oil paintings before starting a new career as a makeup artist. Because of her contact with fashion photography, Daniella Midenge quickly developed a strong interest in the artistic and conceptual creation of photoshoots— with great success: her first cover for Marie Claire followed in 2010. She was soon able to add other illustrious magazines to her portfolio including Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and GQ. Her customer base is still expanding as major companies like H&M, Guess and Swarovski now have her do their fashion campaigns. In addition, she is also a successful model herself; she was on the cover of Elle and in Playboy. After a few years in Berlin, Daniella now lives in Los Angeles.

“You only have to look at Daniella Midenge’s photos to know that women are the stronger sex…” L’Officiel The photography of Daniella Midenge is the perfect symbiosis of artistic photography, erotic appeal, and an unforgettable signature style 27.5 x 34 cm / 10 5 /6 x 13 3 /8 in. | c. 176 pp. | Hardcover with jacket | c. 120 color and b/w photographs English | Europe: September 2017 / Overseas: October 2017 ISBN 978-3-96171-053-9 € 59.90 $ 75 £ 50

ELEMENTS OF ICELAND JÜRGEN WETTKE

In Halldór Laxness’ novel Under the Glacier, the protagonist travels from Reykjavík to the mythical volcano at the Snæfellsjökull glacier, a place in whose shadow “words cease to have even the slightest meaning.” This could be a leitmotif for Jürgen Wettke’s Iceland images. Whereas language can hardly convey the majesty and beauty of a landscape, the photographs in Elements of Iceland speak volumes in their eloquence. Wettke’s photographic journey across the volcanic island is guided by nature’s elemental forces: he shows us the diverse forms of fire, water, air, light, and earth. Whether the structures of lava flows, sculptural ice formations, or nature’s artworks, aurora borealis, lighting up the sky—Jürgen Wettke’s photography brings us closer to these wonders of nature. We discover Iceland in an entirely new and breathtaking way!

9 783961 710287

JÜRGEN WETTKE was born in 1953 in Hagen, Germany. In addition to his successful career—including as a leader in one of the largest corporate consulting firms—he has been passionate about photography since he was a boy. He is focused more on perspective and the use of light than on technique. In recent years, his special focus has been landscape photography. His captivating photos aim to raise awareness of how fragile our planet’s ecosystems are. Also published by teNeues are The Art of the Wadden Sea and The Namib Desert, with traveling exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and Salzburg. An essential illustrated coffee table book showcasing the unique natural beauty of a volcanic island Stunning visual inspiration for fans of landscape photography, ecology, admirers of Iceland, and world travelers alike

Our Favorite Book “It’s always a thrill to be part of creating a photography book, from the initial photo selection to the moment, when you get to hold the finished product in your hands. We both love the stillness and beauty of nature, so we were glad to team up with Jürgen Wettke once more on Elements of Iceland.” Nele Jansen, Producer / Pit Pauen, Editor

25 STORIES ABOUT THE PASSION FOR THE GAME It is the 26 th minute of the Finland-Russia semifinal of the 2011 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships: Finnish player Mikael Granlund, just 19 years old, skates around behind the Russian goal. Suddenly he scoops the puck onto the toe of his blade, glides forward past the side of the goal and slams the puck into the net. The players and spectators go wild. It was a once-in-a-lifetime goal, a goal that was an artistic masterpiece, so beautiful that the Finnish post office created a stamp to celebrate it. Contrast that story with this one: in Sparta Prague’s home arena, Vladimír ˇ steers the ice resurfacing machine around Novácek ˇ has the rink. What’s so special about that? Novácek been maintaining the ice for Sparta since 1968; he is now 82 years old. His work doesn’t prompt much excitement, and he certainly doesn’t have his own postage stamp. Still, the young Finnish world champion and the elderly Czech ice manager are united by their dedication to the sport of ice hockey. Their stories and many others are told in We Love Hockey. The very personal and emotional vignettes and stunning photographs make this book extremely exciting and give it a very special place in the sports literature market. It’s about the greatest and the smallest moments, the men and women who are passionate about this sport, and everything that makes ice hockey so fascinating.

WE LOVE HOCKEY presents the whole spectrum of ice hockey enthusiasm: in addition to Mikael Granlund and ˇ Vladimír Novácek, other profiles include the organ player for the Montreal Canadians, the stars of the legendary Russian KLM line, up-and-coming players from Prague, and a goalkeeping legend who won two Stanley Cups and earned the nickname “Dominator” in the NHL. We Love Hockey is a book about ice hockey lovers for ice hockey lovers The volume will accompany the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships, which will be played in Cologne and Paris From the organ player to the top goal scorer—25 stories that show ice hockey from its human, emotional, fascinating side

My Favorite Book “A great book with exciting stories that show just how pas sionate people of all ages and origins are about this sport. This book comes at the perfect time for me: my hometown club, the Krefelder EV, is in a slump right now and I’m grateful for the distraction.” Jens Grundei, Graphic Artist

DRIVEN BY DESIGN VALUES. VISIONS. ŠKODA.

“Everything needs a soul—at least everything that’s supposed to have meaning.” This is one of the guiding principles for the ŠKODA Design team and the jumping-off point for Driven by Design, which takes the reader on an exciting and emotional journey into the DNA of the Czech auto manufacturer. Since its founding over 120 years ago, the company has successfully captured the spirit of every era while simultaneously creating vehicles of timeless beauty throughout its long, rich history. Driven by Design provides thrilling insights into the vehicle design and development process. We will look over the designer’s shoulders during the crowning moments of their long journey from a vision to a finished product, from idea to ideal: inspiration, sketch, sculpture. The bar is set high—to create cars with character that appeal to all five senses. This aspiration has been perfectly realized in the new KODIAQ SUV, a vehicle that combines breathtaking design, functionality, and comfort while remaining decidedly and distinctively a ŠKODA. Thanks to Driven by Design, we know how such masterpieces are made.

9 783961 710034

ŠKODA is one of the world’s oldest auto manufacturers. The company was established in 1895 by Václav Klement and Václav Laurin and initially used the founders’ last names as the company name. The headquarters, however, have always been in Mladá Boleslav, northeast of Prague. ŠKODA vehicles have always been known for their emotional and contemporary design: from the hand-built ŠKODA 860 (1929–1933) and the ŠKODA POPULAR MONTE CARLO (1935–1938) to the ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI (1961–1971). On April 16, 1991, ŠKODA Automobil AG became part of the Volkswagen Group. But one thing has never changed: ŠKODAs do more than move people; they move dreams as well.

VEGGIE HOTELS

THE JOY OF VEGETARIAN VACATIONS Even with the loveliest hotel room and a beckoning pool, the perfect vacation can be spoiled when the restaurant forces you to make a meal out of side dishes. For vegetarians and vegans, a hotel vacation suiting their culinary lifestyle can still be quite a challenge. But there are outstanding alternatives out there, you just have to find them! Travel journalists, Thomas and Karen Klein, had the same thought, so, in 2011, they joined forces with Peter Haunert to launch the hotel partner and website, VeggieHotels, a portal featuring 100% vegetarian hotels and inns. In addition to purely vegetarian-vegan hotels, more establishments are offering guests outstanding vegan cuisine alongside more conventional dishes, so the founders of VeggieHotels responded to this trend in 2015 by expanding their selection of vegan-friendly accommodations with another new website called, VeganWelcome. They shine a spotlight on wonderful places run with great love and enthusiasm that are paving the way for a kind of tourism based on ethical principles and sustainability. And their success shows just how right they were: today, more than 300 hotels and inns in over 60 countries are VeggieHotels and VeganWelcome members. Guests at these establishments can savor new and creative vegetarian and vegan cuisine that will satisfy even the most jaded palate. The Marc O’Polo success story started in 1967 with two Swedes, an American, a strawberry on an advertising poster, and an O’. When Rolf Lind, Göte Huss, and Jerry O. Sheets started Marc O’Polo 50 years ago, they wanted to conquer the fashion world with natural fabrics and products that came from Asia to Europe. While many business models and companies did not survive, clear winners have emerged that will continue to shape our lives in the foreseeable future. The first edition of the NOAH Hall of Fame introduces these companies and gives insights into their people and stories. Some of the world’s most famous founders share anecdotes, key reasons for their success, lessons learned, and their vision for the future, providing an informative and entertaining read for digital experts and amateurs alike.

9 783961 710423

The book features the first 50 inductees into the NOAH Hall of Fame as well as top companies in today’s most relevant digital vertical markets. What do these companies have in common? They are all changing the face of Europe, and most of them presented at the NOAH Conference, a semi-annual industry event for digital leaders organized by the co-authors of this book. For nine years, the NOAH Conference, established by Marco Rodzynek, has been the largest industry meeting of European Internet and digital economy companies. Internet CEOs, managers, and investors come here to gain insight into the newest successful concepts, exchange ideas with top executives of established companies, learn about startups and new concepts, and make new business contacts. The objective is to link capital and experience with innovation and allow service providers to find the right buyers. Initially “anchored” in London, the NOAH Conference has also been held in Berlin since 2015 in partnership with Axel Springer Digital.

CRAFTING TIMELESS DESIGN FRITZ HANSEN

When you step into the headquarters of the Republic of Fritz Hansen in Allerød, northwest of Copenhagen, you are breathing in the spirit of a company that has made design history. The showroom, which is a mecca for design and architecture students, displays pieces that have become icons: the Series 7 chair, the Swan lounge chair, the Lissoni sofa. Again and again, the Danish furniture maker has teamed up with big-name visionary designers including Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm and Piero Lissoni. With these influxes of fresh energy and an unwavering commitment to the core values of Fritz Hansen–creativity, the finest craftsmanship, and careful attention to even the smallest details–the company has succeeded in placing its products into humanity’s collective consciousness as well as the offices of the President of the UN General Assembly, the Crown Plaza Hotel in Bangkok, the Banquet Hall of Oxford’s venerable St. Catherine’s College, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and in private homes all over the world. With over 150 breathtaking photos, this thoughtfully-designed coffee table book tells you about the history of an exclusive brand, the marvelous pieces of furniture that has made it so revered, and provides examples of how a single piece of furniture can beautify an entire room or building and spur the imagination of the people who live there. After closing this book, you’ll have a wealth of new creative ideas and realize that before sustainability became a trendy buzzword, Fritz Hansen was already practicing it in its purest sense, true to its motto: “Crafting Timeless Design.”

FRITZ HANSEN, founded in 1872 by the man of the same name and family-run until 1979, is a major reason why Scandinavian furniture design is held in such high esteem. The company introduced new production processes in the first half of the 20 th century–Fritz Hansen produced the first steam-bent wooden chair in 1915– and entered into creative partnerships with celebrated architects and designers. Today, Fritz Hansen remains true to its impressive heritage while looking to the future, with shops and showrooms across the globe as well as exclusive, timeless, yet customized furniture developed in concert with the world’s top designers to beautify both public and private spaces.

Everything a coffee table book should be: fantastic photos, incisive text, and beautiful design that makes you want to leaf through the book again and again for inspiration If Scandinavian design is the height of tasteful decorating, then Fritz Hansen is lifestyle with a capital L–perfect for design lovers and design professionals 25 x 32 cm / 9 5 /6 x 12 3 /5 in. | 224 pp. | Hardcover | c. 175 color and b/w photographs English | Europe: September 2017 / Overseas: October 2017 ISBN 978-3-8327-6915-4 € 49.90 $ 65 £ 45
