FALL 2022

FOREWORD

Dear Friends of teNeues and Booksellers The universe continues without fail to offer new challenges for each one of us, for society, and for planet Earth. Challenges we must face with courage, kindness to one another, and faith in the goodness and beauty of the world. This is precisely why we are choosing this moment to celebrate culture, the wonderful and the extraordinary, things which may not improve the world, but at least make it a much more positive and inspiring place to live. And so we celebrate our new programme, featuring tantalizing trips to par ticularly sustainable places, stories about people who have chosen a life wholly devoid of digital connectivity, and the chance to follow Fritjof Nansen’s expedition to the Arctic with never-ending fascination. We invite you to discover the first publication on the megatrend of minimalism in photo graphy, and allow yourself to be captivated by the aesthetic appeal of these works of art. We honor and celebrate Nino Cerruti, the signore who trans formed Julia Roberts into Pretty Woman, with a unique coffee table book of magnificent photographs showing his life and especially his work. Have you ever experienced that feeling of déjà vu, when you see the cut of a pair of pants and think, hold on, we’ve had that before? Pierre and Agatha Toromanoff show us the trends that keep coming back (a bit of consistency is called for, after all). You don’t want to miss this fall’s highlight: Leon Löwentraut, the young rising star of the art world, who, in his early 20ies, is already conquering the art venues of the world with his expressive, colorful paintings. His works are heavily in demand, so take advantage of this unique opportunity to purchase one of the limited special editions including a signed lithograph along with the book in a decorative box! And of course, what would a teNeues programme be without our top author Gisbert L. Brunner ... We are especially delighted to present a new edition of our bestseller The Watch Book, with guaranteed quality – and good sales! I hope you truly enjoy discovering great stories and, of course, luxuriating in the sight of gorgeous pictures! Thank you for your support and loyalty to our publishing house. Yours,

Stefanie Penck

The fascination birds evoke in us continues unabated. Australian artist and photographer Christian Spencer, living in the vicinity of the Brazilian rainforest since 2001, has surrendered to it as well. “The camera is my brush,” is how he describes his style. His photographs truly capture the poetry of nature, letting its beauty speak for itself—which is why he forgoes any image editing. He was the first to capture the breathtakingly fast beating of hummingbirds’ wings in the sunlight, which forms a rainbow in the air.

The world of birds unfolds before his lens in all its colorful glory and elegance: in reflections on the water, between blossoms and trees, and high above the treetops.

Christian Spencer was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1977. He has been living near Itataia National Park outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil since 2001. He is an artist, filmmaker, and photographer. In recent years, he has won numerous awards in international photography competitions, including “Highly Commended” in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021 and the Tokyo Photo Awards 2020. In his 25-year-long career, Christian Spencer has used canvas, film, music, and photography to portray nature as a work of art. 4

captivating images of daughters and sons in European countries, among indigenous peoples in Africa, and on the streets of eastern Asia.

Internationally renowned, award-winning photo grapher Mario Marino once said of his portraits, “I try to read people’s lives.” In this new book he shows for the first time how he accomplishes this with a very special group: children. In Children of the world, Marino brings together his most beautiful, poignant, humorous, and

He approaches these young people eye-to-eye, and reveals their innermost feelings—their joy and moments of bliss, their longings and insecu rities. Despite all the adversities they face in the present, their laughter and their earnestness offer hope for the future. For one fleeting moment, they are very close to us. Each picture expresses the sentence often denied children nowadays: “Here I am, this is me.”

Born in Austria and based in Germany, Mario Marino is an independent, award-winning portrait photographer. He is one of the great humanists among contemporary photographers. He has been photographing portraits of people all around the world for more than twenty years. The human being is at the center of his images. His photographs are displayed in museums and galleries around the globe and his work has been published in over 100 publications worldwide. 6

We live in turbulent times, which arouses a longing to pare down to the essentials in many people. The trend towards minimalism is reflected in the worlds of home living, environmental awareness, and mindfulness, to be sure, but it is also reflected in art and photography.

The minimalist photographer’s eye directs the viewer’s gaze to the aesthetics of the ordinary, transforming them into something extraordinary, something inspiring. The resulting photographs always use clean lines, often arranged in geometric compositions. Minimalist artists such as Maarten Rots, Matthieu Venot, and Natalie Christensen borrow their motifs from everyday life. They can be schematic depictions of topography, or purely two-dimensional, abstract compositions. Sometimes they are detailed, sometimes large-scale. The point is always reduction.

His photo archives are among the world’s largest in the music industry. In Nineties Spirit, he is sharing these treasures with a large audience for the very first time.

The artists themselves also get a chance to have their say. In short passages, interviews, and commen taries, they bring the iconic decade alive again. They make Nineties Spirit a one-of-a-kind chronicle of the times that captures an entire generation’s attitude toward life.

Paul Bergen, who was born in 1957, is one of the most well-known music photographers in the Netherlands. He has been working in this genre for more than 30 years, and some of the most famous pictures of musicians can be attributed to him. His extraordinary archive includes stars and legends such as Iggy Pop, the Rolling Stones, U2, Adele, Pearl Jam, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many others. 12

Sir Paul Smith, with a wry grin in front of a bookshelf. Javier Bardem, utterly relaxed, in sneakers in a sunny field. Rasmus Kofoed, chef at Geranium in Copenhagen, one of the best restaurants in the world, atop an ivy-covered wall. What all these portraits have in common— along with a sense of closeness and privacy—is a glass. For this is how Gérard-Philippe Mabillard photographs his friends and acquain tances, all celebrities from the world of film, art, fashion, design, and culture. Mabillard himself worked as a creative professional before taking the position of director of the Vin du Valais non-profit association. For him, the glass, filled with wine or water, is the link between the people he portrays: a symbol of friendship and community. Through his photography project, Mabillard is supporting the NGO Fondation Moi pour Toit in Colombia.

Gérard-Philippe Mabillard worked in watchmaking at the Swatch Group for the Calvin Klein brand before becoming director of the association Interprofession de la Vigne et du Vin du Valais in 2010. He also ran both a thermal bath center and a tourism region in his native canton of Valais, Switzerland. An economist with a specialization in marketing, he also has a passionate interest in cinema and photography. Through friends and acquaintances, he has maintained close contact with internationally renowned figures from the artistic world for several years now. 14

What is good design, exactly? This is a controversial question that designers and manufacturers grapple with, as do buyers and critics, and it is often only answered in retrospect. The accomplished author Silke Pfersdorf, best known as a columnist on this very topic in Living at home, presents 101 classics that are either absolutely adored or legendary failures, or both. In entertaining passages, she recounts how each design came about, which pieces and which minds influenced one another, and shares unknown anecdotes about each creation.

In doing so, she covers the period from 1920 until today, from Le Corbusier to the Eameses to present-day designers such as Konstantin Grcic, shedding also light on the classics of the new millennium for the first time.

Born in Hanover in 1963, Silke Pfersdorf is a veteran journalist, columnist, and book author whose work appears regularly in major magazines and newspapers, including Brigitte, Stern, Madame, Cosmopolitan, DU-Schweizer Kulturmagazin, Elle Decoration, Geo Saison and Süddeutsche Zeitung. She is also known for her column Schätzchen, wo kommst du denn her? (Translation: Where did you come from, you little treasure?) in Living at Home, where she spotlights design classics on a monthly basis. Silke Pfersdorf has two grown children and lives in Hamburg. 18

“Style is balance, but with a dramatic twist,” Nino Cerruti is reported to have said, although one may ask whether it wasn’t perhaps sometimes the other way around, as the master certainly knew how to electrify on the catwalk. His career had a very classic start in the 1950s when, at a young age, he inherited his father’s legacy and initially created solid ready-to-wear men’s clothing, refined with a touch of Italian elegance. He soon turned to womenswear, pioneering there as well with his focus on pants. He remained a leading figure in the world of fashion for many decades, until his death in January of 2022.

The one-of-a-kind monograph Nino Cerruti – Fashion Icon pays tribute to the legendary designer. Featuring a large number of photographs from the fashion world, as well as many showing him in his own personal world, it explores the life and work of the grand seigneur of Italian fashion.

One person’s deadly sin is another person’s latest go-to piece. Whether it’s carrot pants, shoulder pads, or leopard print, the fact is that, when it comes to fashion, (almost) everything reappears eventually. But why do past trends return, and is there a way to predict when a piece will be back in style again? Déjà vu Style is all about these special pieces, featuring the celebrities who made them popular while explaining their comeback. From the miniskirts of the 1960s to the platform shoes of the 1990s and more, this entertaining book on fashion brings them all together.

Fashion historians and experts in vintage fashion provide fascinating background knowledge. Sustainability plays a role here, too, because nothing combats the phenomenon of fast fashion better than wearing rediscovered fashion gems.

Every single morning, fashionistas around the world choose the one special creation that transforms the sidewalk into a catwalk and their outfit into a statement: the right pair of shoes. Sneakers, pumps, ballet flats, loafers, boots, and sandals all create their own world of trendy pieces, rich in references, codes, clues, and a whole lot of fun. In It’s All About Shoes, street style photo grapher Suzanne Middlemass showcases a variety of beautiful, or even odd, but definitely interesting shoes that she captured in the world’s leading fashion hubs.

In Paris, Milan, New York, London, Berlin, and Copen hagen, she scouted out both global and local trends, and spoke with big-name shoe designers about where they get their inspiration, and how they create styles that are as sustainable as possible.

After graduating from the prestigious London College of Communication, UAL, Suzanne Middlemass was hired by Condé Nast in the late 2000s and since then has been commissioned for her street style and backstage photography by high-end fashion and lifestyle magazines like VOGUE, Elle, and GQ. She has also worked alongside international fashion brands such as Furla, Havaiana shoes, Roxanne First, and Thom Sweeney. Most recently, her work was selected to be part of an international exhibition that show cases the works of an exclusive group of 50 Women Street Photographers. 30

Paul Scane is a photographer on a mission, and that mission is his love for London. For many years, he has roamed his hometown with analog cameras, capturing whatever catches his eye: unusual faces, bizarre urban scenes, or unusual structures found in the city’s architecture. Largely in black-and-white, over the years Paul has created a unique and authentic portrait of the

city he knows best, yet continues to discover anew each day. In London Unseen, the photographer shares his best images. This book captures the character and soul of the real London in more detail than perhaps any photography book of London ever before—a study far from Big Ben and Trafalgar Square.

Paul Scane acquired his first 35mm Leica M6 some fifteen years ago, and has been hooked on analog photography ever since. Born and raised in London, his interest in his hometown was always strong. He explores the hidden corners of the capital city by bicycle and on foot, documenting whatever strikes his eye. The result is a unique archive of photographs. Much of what he captured on film over the years has since disappeared, buried under successive waves of development and gentrification. 32

Ukrainian photographer Yevhen Samuchenko, a native of Odessa, has received global accolades for his compelling travel photography and artistic aerial shots, as he captures the fragile beauty of our planet in poetic images. This includes his homeland, which has abruptly become the focus of international attention, and now seems more fragile than ever. The Beauty of Ukraine is both a love letter to the landscapes of Ukraine and an aesthetic treasure. Yevhen Samuchenko shows us Lake Lemuria from the air, with its unusual pink color making it almost reminiscent of a piece from the land art movement.

He photographs a canyon near Kherson in such a way that it evokes a line graph within the lush green landscape. Fields of poppies and lavender mesmerize with their uncompromising richness of color, as do wintry landscapes with their monumental stillness and simplicity.

Yevhen Samuchenko specializes in travel and drone photography. He is a member of national and international photography organizations and the winner of numerous awards, including third place in Landscape and Adventure/Travel Photographer of the Year 2022 and bronze at the VIEPA Vienna International Photo Award 2021. Media manager, journalist, and author Lucia Bondar organizes an annual architecture and design forum in Ukraine in collaboration with her publishing house CP PUBLISHING, and is also the author of the first series of Ukrainian design books. 34

The French photographer Brice Portolano spent five years traveling from Alaska to Patagonia, from Lapland to Iran, to portray ten extraordinary people. Each of them dared to embark on a radical new beginning. In the midst of the great outdoors, they built an existence far away from cities, mostly living in the proverbial radio silence—in other words, without a telephone or the Internet. Despite some obstacles and a great deal of strenuous work, they love having the freedom to determine their own lives and be in harmony with themselves.

Anyone who tags along with Tinja, the dog sled driver in Lapland; or Ali, the Persian horseman; or watches Barny, the self-sufficient farmer in Cumbria; or Zaya, the reindeer herder in Mongolia, as they all go about their daily lives, will also begin to question some of the things we now regard as essential in life.

Born in 1991, Brice Portolano is a French photographer based in Paris. His work focuses on the relationship between man and nature in particular, and he enjoys documenting adventures in the wilderness. His photographs have been published in numerous online and print media, including GEO Magazine, National Geographic, The Independent, The Daily Mail UK, STERN, L‘OBS, Le Monde, Les Échos, Outside Magazine and Business Insider. No Signal was a long-term project of his that he worked on from 2015–2020. 36

In the late 19th century, the Norwegian Arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen undertook a pioneering expedition: he wanted to reach the North Pole with the specially designed ship Fram. North of Siberia, he allowed his ship to be trapped by the pack ice and drift—only to discover with disappointment that the Fram did not come any closer to the North Pole. He and Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen switched to skis and began the unbelievably arduous trek to their longed-for destination, a trek that became a race against time.

The Nansen Photographs recounts this expedition using original photographs and diaries, featuring both Nansen himself and his crew members. They illustrate in a poignant and sometimes disconcerting way how the expedition members went about their daily lives and conducted their research, the conflicts they faced, and how they ultimately brought their daring undertaking to its successful conclusion.

Geir O. Kløver is the director of the Fram Museum in Oslo and author, co-author and editor of a number of books on polar expeditions. A contributor to several traveling exhibitions on polar history, he has given lectures on most of the continents—including the Arctic and Antarctic. Not only does the Fram Museum house the original ship from Fridtjof Nansen’s expeditions, the building was also com prehensively modernized under Kløver’s management and was honored with the prestigious THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2020. 40

One icon meets another: For true automotive enthusiasts, it was no surprise that the paths of Aston Martin and René Staud would cross at some point. The British brand’s meteoric success story began almost exactly 110 years ago. Its claim of building road-ready racing cars has always remained intact. Legendary victories at Le Mans or the Nürburg ring, for example, contributed to Aston Martin’s

appeal, as did the fact that Her Majesty’s secret agent, James Bond, drove the elegant, British-built DB5 as early as 1964. In this new edition of the best-selling book, multiple award-winning automotive photographer René Staud presents breathtaking new photographs of both old and present-day models—even those knowledgeable about the brand will discover stories not yet heard.

René Staud is the grand seigneur of automotive photography. The Magicflash®, a lighting system he designed and built in 1983 specifically to meet the needs of studio photography, is still state of the art today and is part of the secret behind Staud’s characteristic style. Over the years, the models of all major car brands have appeared in front of his lens. René Staud is a multiple bestselling author with teNeues, from The Mercedes 300 SL Book and The Porsche 911 Book to The Jaguar Book, which was published in 2021. 44

A classic, an icon, and much more than just a car. For many owners, the VW Beetle was practically a member of the family. For 65 years, the favorite car with its friendly exterior was a major part of the history of mobility. This fascinating book is a wonderful journey through time: emotional, nostalgic, and fascinating. From the very first model in 1938 to the final Beetle to roll off the production line in Mexico in 2003, from Herbie the iconic movie Beetle to quirky design variations, from the Beetle amphibious

vehicle to the Beetle police convertible, we all associate this iconic car with a host of memories and even more emotions. And if you spend enough time leafing through this volume, you might just hear the distinctive sound of the boxer engine ...

Complications have been considered the very pinnacle of the art of watchmaking for centuries, including displays of the tides and phases of the moon. When it comes to additional mechanical functions, the spectrum is almost completely without limits. Experienced watchmakers can combine them just about any way they please. Another highly interesting aspect is the finishing technique known as skeletonizing, where the movement’s interior can be seen–from above, through the dial, or from below, through the transparent case back.

This second volume of The Watch Book – More than Time is all about the additional functions of mechanical timepieces, their history, and their unique technical features. The entertaining passages by the successful author Gisbert L. Brunner are illustrated with striking photographs.

Born in 1947, Gisbert L. Brunner has been passionately devoted to wristwatches, pendulum clocks, and other precision timepieces since 1964. During the quartz crisis of the 1970s, his love for mechanical watches grew even stronger. His ardent enthusiasm for collecting and his vast expertise inspired him to publish his first articles in GQ, ZEIT and Chronos in the early 1980s. To date, he has published more than twenty books on the fascinating world of watches. 50

Born in 1998, the young action painter Leon Löwentraut creates vividly colored large-scale paintings, that is, when he is not busy designing a gate at an airport or inaugurating one of his exhibitions. Löwentraut’s works, already displayed in locations around the world for the past several years, now fetch sums of up to six figures in the art world. Despite never having attended art school,

Leon Löwentraut quickly attracted the interest of galleries in London, New York, and Singapore. In 2020, the Kunsthalle Messmer museum dedicated an exhibition to his body of work; in 2021, Löwentraut donated an exclusive card motif to the children’s charity UNICEF for its 75th anniversary. Acclaimed by many, viewed skeptically by others—but few are indifferent when it comes to this young artist!

24-year-old Leon Löwentraut is already one of the most sought-after artists of his time. His expressive, boldly colored and distinctive paintings, which have already been exhibited around the world, brought a breath of fresh air to the international art scene. Whether they are held in Munich or New York, in Venice or Mallorca, his exhibitions are always a tremendous success with the general public. 52

Why do we play games? That is the question Belgian photographer Hannelore Vandenbussche decided to explore, traveling to numerous countries to roam the world of sports, passion, athletic competition, transition, and emancipation. The athletes she portrays keep old traditions alive or carve out new territory, perform rituals, and celebrate with boisterous parties centered around their games.

Meet Buzkashi players astride their horses in Central Asia, Donga stick fighters in Ethiopia, Tarahumara runners in Mexico, big wave surfers in Nazaré, and many other athletes in these unusual sports. This extraordinary book of photographs is dedicated to a subject that is being presented in an entirely new way.

Born in Chile and raised in Belgium, Hannelore Vandenbussche is a photographer and creative businesswoman, but more than anything, she is a storyteller. After earning her degree in photo graphy, she traveled all over the world to take pictures. Throughout her adventure-packed travels, Hannelore Vandenbussche was inspired by the different types of games she observed around the world. This led to her largest project to date: Human Playground, which was also filmed for a documentary series. 62

For me, Patek Philippe is not only a manufacturer of watches, but a protector of world heritage, keeping alive crafts like enamel painting, which would not have survived without the company’s efforts to preserve them.” 64
