MAJOR ISSUE: HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE ENSEMBLE OF MUSIC
The ULI competition tries to develop a vision that empowers the current under-developed neighborhood and seeks to integrate the diverse and unique cultural assests in New Orleans. The concept is to EMSEMBLE, in terms of music, culture, and different programming catering for different demographics.

The highlights of the proposal include: - A re-proposed linear park with cultural and commercial programming: We proposed art center, gallery, and commercial uses such as botique hotel and bars to support the neighborhood development.

- A public-private partnership: In order to implement the plan, public sector and private would form a joint venture, contribute their respective parcel ownership to the JV, each one of them owning the respective share interest corresponding to their initial land contributions, 50% each

In the sequence of open spaces along Lafitte Park, people may easily navigate themself to the attractive jazz bars, markets for fun, as well as join a tour to the cemetery for a fun trip, or participate in the urban farm. The active spaces under the bridge also connect people to both sides of the site and bring activities that benefit tourists, emloyees, and local residents.

The studio took place in the seaport city of Valparaíso in central Chile. The beautiful city-- like a well-dressed old lady quoted from the local-- faces multiple challanges: it’s built over very abrupt topography, the rich chose to live closer to the coast, left the poor people reside on the hillsides in informal settlements. Beyound that, a devastating fire in 2014 destroyed 2,500 homes, leaving 11,000 people homeless. The studio took on the challenges, studied the status quo, worked out a city-wide strategy in a group of four, then zoomed into individual site-plan scale design. Our planning goal will focus on how to make Valparaíso:

Native restoration in the ravine park
My individual proposal focuses on the Cerro Las CaĂąas, the most vulnerable ravine hit by the fire. To make it more resilient to future fire, a multi-layer fire buffer is introduced, with inflamable local vegetation like arrayan and belloto del norte. Under the public-private joint investment, two funicular elevators will be placed to give better access to residents uphill. Along the stations a set of public realm will both cater for more activity, but also can be evacuation routes/points in case of fire. Stewardships such as library, community center will keep eyes on the public realm to ensure safety. With the infrastructure implemented, there will be spaces set aside for self-constructed informal settlement, as an addition to public housing, but in the more local custom.

The site plan focuses on the restoration of the burnt area, and explores spatial and program possibilities for the integration of both formal and informal settlement. Elevator stations will serve as the anchor point of the mobility system, and around it there could be markets, cultural centers and startup hubs for the locals to gain more cultural and economic benefits.

Founded in 1910, Jinan Railway Assembly Cooperation was one of the earliest rail factories co-built by Qing and Deutch government. It had a crew of 411 and equipment of 82, mainly offering reparing and maintainese services for locomotives on Jinpu Railway. JRAC had been making its historical contribution to China’s railway miracle. The majority of factory buildings at that time was designed by Deutch architects, and several have been well kept till today, including the villa of the first administrator and a well-reserved office building. Water tower and oil tanks can still be seen today. Most of the factory workshops were built in the 1950s, supported by large-scale truss, they retain large open space inside. In the 1980s JRAC relocated its site, abandoned most of the workshops. As it developed into post-industrialization phase, railroad area was surrounded by urban spaces and became frature. Large area of land were empted, as well as history and the unique culture. How could city re-develop along the railroad became a question.

VISITOR CENTER DESIGN | ARCHITECTURE STUDIO
FORM EVOLUTION
Dec 2010 | Jinan, Shandong, China Indevidual architecture design for a visitor center.
The city Jinan, namely “spring city”, and the Daming Lake is among the top places of interest, for its great expanse and beautiful scenery of all seasons. The park welcomes a total of over 2 million visitors annually. The visiting center would sit in the entrance of park, and it is to be visited by visitors and local residents alike. One big challenge of the visiting center is how it coordinates with the surrounding natural environment, how to strike a balance so that it does not interfere with views when visiting the park and at the meantime play its functional role as a landmark spot for public usage. What’s more, different from buildings in other sites, the visiting center take advantage of the park to provide users with a perfect view. The concept of the visitor center sprung from the Chinese character “人” (human), which could become “大”(big) as in Daming Lake. According to Gropius’ theory “form follows function”, all function zones are arranged from a study of human behavior and needs for a visitor center.

This is an urban design project to provide a vision for Hannan Central District in Wuhan, China. The design stage is almost done when I began the internship, I’m mainly in charge of rendering of the master plan, as well as the 2D and 3D diagrams.

This collaged map shows an ideal city that is linear in form. The objective is to create a mindmap that caputures moments in our minds, and represents it using different techniques. To me the remnants and segments of languages could invisiably form a form of city that grow along the river, and that integrates oriental and western culture to dialogue.
