After making an appearance in the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament semi-finals, the Golden Eagles will look to continue their rise back to the top of the OVC. Tech has made it to the OVC Tournament four straight seasons and is two seasons removed from its OVC Championship in the 2008 season. Tech’s quest to get back to the top of the mountain will be a challenging one, as several different teams will be in the running. Tech was picked to finish fourth in the OVC Preseason Poll, behind top-ranked Morehead State, Austin Peay and Jacksonville State. “Morehead State definitely deserved to get the top preseason nod, with Austin Peay coming in second,” head coach John Blair said. “It’s going to be one of those where it will be hard to sort out where everyone finishes.” Non-Conference Schedule

Tech continues its Nashville swing as it takes on future OVC-rival Belmont, before heading to UT Chattanooga for its final non-conference games of the season. The Golden Eagles will square off with a pair of Tennessee schools in UT Chattanooga and East Tennessee State, along with UNC Asheville. TTU is 52-15 all-time against their UT Chattanooga Invitational opponents, which includes at least 21 wins against both East Tennessee State and UT Chattanooga. “We tried to find tournaments that provide similar looks to the OVC,” Blair said. “This will help us be better prepared for our conference schedule and we will learn at what level we will need to play at to be successful this season.” OVC Play With the addition of SIU Edwardsville into the OVC this season, Tech will play 20 conference games this season. During Blair’s eight seasons at Tech, he has amassed a 68-74 record against OVC opponents. Last season, the Golden Eagles

“We’re starting the season with three quality tournaments,” Blair said. “This will be crucial to getting people into their roles for the rest of the season.” The Golden Eagles will open their 2011 season with a total of 10 nonconference games, spread out over three tournaments. Tech opens its season at the Georgia Tech Invitational, where it will take on a trifecta of opponents including Louisville, Kansas State and Georgia Tech. Tech has never faced Kansas State, and is 4-2 against Georgia Tech and 0-8 against Louisville. TTU’s next stop comes courtesy of Lipscomb at the Lipscomb Invitational. Along with Lipscomb, the Golden Eagles will also take on Arkansas State and UNC Charlotte. Tech is a combined 7-6 against these three opponents, including a 3-1 record against UNC Charlotte.

Golden eagle 2011 outlook last season, ended her season with 100 kills and 69 total blocks, which ranked third on the team last season. Hancock finished second on the team in assists last season and will compete with Comperry for the starting setter position. Stiles saw action in six sets last season.

The Golden Eagle Huddle swept the season series against UT Martin and Jacksonville State, while earning splits against Tennessee State, Southeast Missouri, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky and Murray State. Blair has yet to face SIUE. New to the Bench The Tech coaching staff will feature a new face this season in Claire Lindner. Lindner comes to Tech after four seasons as a member of the Stony Brook coaching staff. Don Hardcastle will serve as TTU’s graduate assistant coach, after serving as a team manager and student assistant for the last three seasons.

Newcomers The Golden Eagles boast seven freshmen to open the 2011 season that will be relied upon to contribute as the season moves along. Tech signed four players in the offseason to take the spots of the four graduating seniors last season. Out of the four signees, Tech signed two outside hitters in Ellen Conti and Sarah Teel, and a pair of middle blockers in Madison Keyes and Christine Maci. The Golden Eagles also welcome three walk-ons this season including Hayli Raines, Courtney Smith and Kelsey Smith. Raines will serve as an outside hitter, while Courtney Smith and Kelsey Smith will stand in as defensive specialists. “We know we’re going to be better in the gym because all of our newcomers have played year-round,” Blair said. “Our goal was to add the best level of players that we could and it looks like several of them could make a contribution early on.”

Returnees The Golden Eagles welcome back three juniors and five sophomores from last season. Representing the junior class will be Madi Comperry, Katrina Dvorken and Kelsey Gray. Dvorken and Gray saw limited time this past season, combining to play in 154 sets. Gray was named to the Preseason all-OVC team for her efforts last season. During her sophomore campaign, Gray led the team in total blocks with 126, which ranked second in the OVC. Gray also tallied 270 kills and was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week. Tech also welcomes back five sophomores including a pair of OVC all-Newcomer Team members in Allison May and Natalie Penrod. May played in all 119 sets last season and led the team in digs with 535. May tallied 20 digs in a match eight times, including a career-high 36 against Eastern Illinois. Penrod finished her freshman slate with 268 kills, which ranked third on the team last season. Penrod also added 121 digs and 43 total blocks to her ledger. “The fact that three of our returnees have been recognized by the conference is indicative of the quality of players we have,” Blair said. “We will look for our returnees to be ready to go from day one.” Ashleigh Hancock, Elise Robertson and Lauren Stiles round out the sophomore class. In 2009 (Freshman):

Madi participated in 43 sets over 21 matches…finished second on the team in assists with 76…recorded 18 digs, an assist and an ace…recorded a career-high 14 assists vs. Toledo (9/12).

Prep Highlights:

Madi collected three letters in volleyball at Sickles High School under coaches Rob Brashear and her mother Diane Comperry...first-team all-conference selection as a senior and team MVP...setter for her club team which finished second at the 2009 Mideast Qualifier to earn a spot in the 2009 U.S. Junior Olympic Championships where the team finished third...guided Sickles to the district round of the state tournament as a junior and senior.

Kelsey was one of two Golden Eagles to play in all 119 sets last season... led the team in total blocks with 126 (1.06 bps), which ranked second in the OVC...finished third on the team in kills with 270, while posting a teamleading .259 hitting percentage...named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week (10/18) after posting 10 total blocks against Jacksonville State (10/15)...recorded a career-high 16 kills against Murray State (11/5).

Kelsey was one of three Golden Eagles to start in all 28 matches and 112 sets…led the team in total blocks with 122 (1.09 bps) which ranked fourth in the OVC…led all newcomers with 198 kills (1.77 kps)…posted 33 digs, four assists and one service ace…recorded a career-high 15 kills vs. Southeast Missouri (9/18) and a career-high 11 total blocks against Murray State (11/19)…named to the OVC all-newcomer team.

Prep Highlights:

A four-year starter for coach Ruth Sunkle at Newark High School, Kelsey was named all-conference four times and all-state as a senior...two times her team MVP, she led Newark in kills three seasons and earned OCC-Ohio Division Player of the Year honors her senior season...set the school record for kills in a match with 34...also played club for Central Ohio Volleyball Club where she helped the team to a first place finish at the U.S. Junior Olympic Championships silver division as a freshman...member of the AAU National Tournament All-Star Team as a junior.

Entering its 64th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which will begin competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont will give the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. SIUE will begin regular season competition this season (2011-12) and be eligible for postseason the same year Belmont joins the league. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. Discussions were put on hold by World War II but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville merged to form the OVC. Tennessee Tech joined the OVC the following year. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially, breaking racial barriers to providde educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. Through the past 63 years, 15 teams have won or shared the league’s football title. The list is led by Eastern Kentucky, winner of 20 outright or shared football crowns, including both the 2007 and 2008 championships. Former member Middle Tennessee is next with 11 titles, followed by Tennessee Tech with nine. The first Division I-AA/FCS football playoff was held in 1978 with only four teams, which is the only year through present day that the OVC did not field a playoff representative. In the late 1970s, women’s athletics began somewhat of a rebirth on the national scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women’s sports. Recognizing the need to provide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OVC established women’s championships in the sports of basketball, tennis and track in 1977, with cross country and volley-

ball added over the next four years. Those sports were initially governed by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), but the overall strength of women’s programs in the league was demonstrated by the automatic bids the OVC instantly received when the NCAA became the governing body in 1982. The playing field is not the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic Achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conference-sponsored sport. Since the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-America program began, the Ohio Valley Conference has had 202 student-athletes honored with the award, including 35 over the last three years. Through the early years of the league, administrators wrestled with fan behavior due to the close proximity of the Conference members and the intense rivalries which developed. Just as it did decades ago, the OVC took the leadership

role on what has become a national issue. In 1995, the OVC implemented a first-of-its-kind “Sportsmanship Statement,” a policy which promotes principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for one’s opponent. The statement has become a model for others to follow across the nation, and has answered the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics. Additionally, the OVC annually presents the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, in honor of the former Morehead State student-athlete, coach and athletics director, to a junior or senior student-athlete with significant athletic contributions who best exemplifies the characteristics of sportsmanship and citizenship. Most recently, the Conference has also implemented the OVC Institutional and Team Sportsmanship Awards, which are presented to one institution and 18 sportspecific teams voted by their peers to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. A four-year member of the Stony Brook volleyball coaching staff, Claire Lindner has been named the Tennessee Tech assistant volleyball coach, rounding out head coach John Blair’s coaching staff. “This is a great opportunity for me to work under coach Blair,” Lindner said. “The conference and the school have a good tradition and it will be a good learning experience.” A native of Northport, N.Y., Lindner attended Stony Brook University, where she received her Master of Arts in education, along with an advanced graduate certificate in coaching in 2008. “I coached a bunch in college and right before graduation I realized that I wanted to continue coaching,” Lindner said. “I just couldn’t stay away from athletics.” For the past four seasons, Lindner has been a mem-

ber of the Stony Brook coaching staff that saw the Seawolves compile a 24-8 record in 2007, while finishing in first place in the America East Conference during the regular season with an 11-1 mark. “The first thing I noticed was that she made a commitment to volleyball and to coaching,” Blair said. “She will have great input into the libero position, being a for-

mer libero herself.” As a member of the Stony Brook staff, Lindner was responsible for several different matters, including film exchange, recruitment, opponent scouting and defensive training and strategy. Lindner has also served as the head coach/club director of the Long Island Volleyball Academy since 2004. She was responsible for the day-to-day operations and coordinated all of the summer camps and position clinics. Before becoming a coach at Stony Brook, Lindner played four seasons as a libero for the Seawolves from 2003-06. She was named a team captain for her final two seasons and the team’s MVP in 2006. She also served as the team’s representative to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) from 2005-07.

Don Hardcastle begins his first year as the Tennessee Tech graduate assistant coach, after spending the last three seasons as the team’s manager and a student-assistant. “He’s been a student-assistant, a manager and now we’re excited to have him be our graduate assistant coach,” head coach John Blair said. “He will carry more responsibility and round out our staff nicely.” A native of Johnson City, Tenn., Hardcastle recently completed his four undergrad in accounting, and will continue towards his MBA. “It’s a great opportunity to take on more of a coaching role,” Hardcastle said. “I have a growing love for the sport and would love to keep on coaching.” In 2009, Hardcastle co-founded the men’s volleyball club team at Tennessee Tech and has served as a player/

coach since the club’s inception. Hardcastle attended high school at Providence Academy (Johnson City) where he played four seasons of basketball as a small forward. He also competed in one season of cross country. Hardcastle has also helped out at several volleyball camps, including the Volley Performance camps in Atlanta and several of the TTU volleyball clinics over the past few years. He has also participated in volleyball camps at Clemson University, along with former TTU graduate assistant Kelsey Murphy.

2010 season in review

Golden Eagles continue to rake in OVC honors Along with making the OVC Tournament for the fourth straight season, the Golden Eagles also kept up one trend; bringing in the individual accolades. Along with advancing to the semi-finals of the OVC Tournament, the players at Tennessee Tech earned a total of seven OVC awards throughout the season including thee Player of the week awards, and four allOVC honors. Leah Meffert padded her already impressive resume as she was named to the all-OVC team for the third straight season. A two-time OVC Offensive Player of the Week in 2010, Meffert led the Golden Eagles in kills with 421 (3.66 kps), which was good enough for second in the OVC. Her 421 kills during her final season at Tech gave her a career-total of 1,734 kills, that surpassed the previous mark of 1,662 kills by Rachel Melchiorre for the all-time kills record at Tech. Leah also led the team in service aces with 34 and finished second on the team in digs 337. Meffert was also named to the OVC all-Tournament Team after posting 46 kills in Tech’s two postseason matches. Meffert was also named the team’s Best Offensive Player. Following a successful freshman campaign, Kelsey Gray did not miss a beat during her sophomore season, as she continued to dominate on the defensive side of the net. Once again, Gray led the team in total blocks with 126, which ranked second in the OVC. Against Jacksonville State, Gray posted a season-high 10 total blocks, en route to being named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week. The 2010 season also saw the Golden Eagles boast a pair of players on the OVC all-Newcomer Team in Allison May and Natalie Penrod. May finished the season with a team-leading 534 digs, which ranked seventh in the OVC. She recorded at least 20 digs in a match nine times in 2010, including a career-high 36 against Eastern Illinois. She was named the team’s Best Defensive Player and received the Coach’s and Heart awards as well. Penrod finished her freshman campaign with 268 kills, which ranked fourth on the team. She posted at least 10 kills in 12 matches last season, including a career-high 16 against

Tech’s First OVC Coach of the Year

Sharron Bilbrey took over the head coaching post at Tech in 1979 and led the Golden Eagles through 15 seasons, the longest tenure of six TTU volleyball coaches. Bilbrey’s teams won 279 matches during her career, including a school-record 31 victories in 1983 when the team was 31-9. In 11 years of conference play, her teams were 93-63 against league opponents.

Jennie Gilbert was Tech’s head volleyball coach from 1994 through 2002. She was named OVC Coach of the Year in 1997 when the Golden Eagles captured the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship and played in the NCAA Tournament. Her teams won a total of 126 matches. In the 2008 season, current head coach John Blair became TTU’s second OVC Coach of the Year.

For nearly 100 years, Tennessee Tech has served the various needs of the region, the state and beyond. Not only is Tech renowned as a fine institution of higher education, it also serves as a public resource center and encourages scholarly research and creative activity by its faculty and students. Today, Tech makes a number of contributions to economic development locally, regionally and nationally. Campus Life

Tennessee Tech students know that there is a lot more to college life than what goes on in the classroom. Nearly 200 student organizations on campus offer activities ranging from academic, athletic, cultural, political, community-oriented, social to spiritual. At Tech, it’s easy to get involved and make friends. Campus recreation coordinates 11 intramural and club sports: basketball, bowling, flag football, golf, racquetball, rugby, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. The Fitness Center is a free, full-service health club for students. It houses a fully equipped weight room, 25-meter indoor pool, cardiovascular equipment and an indoor track. Tech is also a center for the arts, presenting concerts, theatre productions, lectures, dance performances, films, workshops, demonstrations and art exhibits each year. And, of course there’s always an athletics event to attend. Tennessee Tech’s athletic teams compete in the Ohio Valley Conference for 14 sports on the NCAA Division I level, and students can attend all regular season athletic events absolutely free!

The Tennessee Tech Athletic Department unveiled a new brand on Aug. 31, 2006, with an all-new set of logos for the Golden Eagles. The brand is new, but the tradition remains -the name Golden Eagles. How did TTU adopt the name? In the first quarter of this century, Tennessee Polytechnic Institute was a tiny school, located in the rugged, mountainous Upper Cumberland region where Golden Eagles were plentiful, soaring above the lush, upland forests. It's easy to understand how those early students and faculty could narrow their choices for their athletic team's nicknames to "Golden Eagles" or "Mountaineers." On February 14, 1925, the nickname "Golden Eagles " was officially adopted. The school newspaper, The Oracle, printed a story that outlined the efforts of a committee to suggest several possible nicknames to Athletic Association members for their consideration. The two most popular names were "Golden Eagles" and "Mountaineers," and the association, by a vote of 139-18, proudly declared its preference. It wasn't until 27 years later that a tangible mascot found its way to the campus. Several Tech

students braved a driving night rainstorm to pilfer a huge block-tin eagle statue from the charred ruins of a resort hotel in Monteagle. They painted the creature - with a wingspan of over six feet - a glistening gold, and suspended it from the rafter for public inspection at the following day's basketball game in Memorial Gym. Then-Governor Frank G. Clement, a lifelong friend of the hotel owner, was in Cookeville to speak . He worked out a compromise between his friend and the school students, who wanted to retain the eagle as their mascot. Over the years, a wide variety of artwork and drawings have been used to represent the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. Some of those include a drawing which appeared in media guides in the mid 1970s, and a cartoon-style mascots in the early 1980s that was dubbed ‘the purple chicken” by Tech students.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Bell, now in his 11th year as President of Tennessee Tech, is an avid supporter of TTU and Ohio Valley Conference sports. He currently chairs the OVC President’s Board of Directors. Bell became TTU’s President in 2000 after serving as dean, associate dean, assistant dean, and a chairperson in the university’s College of Business. After taking the post, he oversaw the reorganization of the athletics department, bringing in a full-time athletics director for the first time in almost 20 years. He has also been involved in statewide economic development on behalf of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, working on the THEC master plan focusing on links among higher education and stakeholders in business, health care and state government. Bell has served four terms on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award’s Board of Examiners and was appointed a charter member of the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence in 1992, serving on the group’s panel of judges from 1994 to 2005. He

represented Tennessee as a state delegate to the White House Conference on North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994 and spent two years as an economic development consultant for the nation of Mauritius. Dr. Bell has served on or chaired a variety of professional, regional and national organizations, including the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business International, the Southern Business Association, the North American Case Research Association, the Tennessee College Association, and a number of Tennessee higher education task forces, among others. In 2005, Bell was named the first recipient of the Ned R. McWherter Leadership Award, presented by the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence. In the scholarly arena, he has been published extensively in the fields of management, organizational design, computer science and quality/productivity management, authoring two books and more than 70 articles, case studies and papers. Bell is also well known and respected in the Cookeville community. He has chaired the Cookeville-Area Putnam County Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors, the Regional Quality Council and the Putnam Tomorrow Task Force for the Putnam County Commission. A past president of the local YMCA, Bell currently chairs the Cookeville Industrial Development Board and is a member of the Board of Directors for CityScape and Blood Assurance Corp. He has been an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America since 1988 and serves on the executive board for the Middle Tennessee Council of BSA. He is also a member of the Cookeville Rotary and Evening Lions Clubs.

Mark Wilson’s first six years as Director of Athletics at Tennessee Tech have been highlighted by vision, energy, and enthusiasm. Those factors have facilitated growth and excellence in all areas and have placed the focus on generating a better student-athlete experience. Wilson is currently serving an appointment on the NCAA Leadership Council through April, 2011. It gives the Ohio Valley Conference, TTU and Wilson a voice in a variety of strategic decisions that can affect intercollegiate athletics. Wilson, 41, has led Athletics to several milestone accomplishments during his first six years, including enhanced facilities and fund raising, high profile staff additions, and compliance and academic success. Under Wilson’s guidance, the program has continued to focus on the academic success of its student-athletes, with soaring numbers each semester on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Tech’s studentathletes have achieved their highest overall combined semester GPAs. Wilson also developed a strategic plan for Tech’s athletic facilities and has already seen some of those plans become reality. During the past three years Tech has completed several construction projects to athletic facilities, including resurfacing the outdoor tennis courts, a new natural grass practice field, installation of new turf in Tucker Stadium, renovating the running track, renovating the football offices, meeting rooms and locker rooms, and new lights at Tucker Stadium. Most recently, Athletics opened a spacious, new basketball office complex in Eblen Center and construction is underway on an new Athletic Performance Center on the western edge of campus. Additional building plans call for a new student-athlete center. Another step achieved under Wilson’s direction has been increased fund raising and development efforts with the goal of providing the necessary resources for Tech’s student-athletes, coaches and staff.

All of those accomplishments have come while the department has continued to stay focused on compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Wilson was named Director of Athletics on July 1, 2004. He came to Tennessee Tech from Ohio University. Since his first day at Tech, Wilson has made rapid and steady progress. He began by restructuring the department and implemented plans for a better student-athlete experience. In addition, athletics launched a dynamic new website, gained NCAA certification and was found in complete compliance, created a far-reaching “WIN” program for academic success, opened an entertaining and popular Tailgate Park, and started plans for two capital projects. Before going to Ohio, Mark served as the Director of Athletic Marketing for the University of Massachusetts. He also worked as a graduate assistant in the UMass athletic department and interned with the Northwestern University ticketing and marketing departments. Wilson received his bachelor’s degree in 1991 from the University of Maine in physical education and health, and earned his master’s in sports management from the University of Massachusetts in 1994. Mark has two daughters, Katey (15) and Meaghan (10).

v Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Welfare

Dr. Lance Jasitt serves as Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Welfare. He has served in compliance and administrative operations roles in the Tech Athletics Department since 1998. Dr. Jasitt plays a key role in the academic success of each of Tech’s varsity student-athletes, managers, and graduate assistants. His primary goals are to provide guidance and academic resources to permit student-athletes to maintain their academic eligibility under NCAA rules and to progress to graduation. In this process, Dr. Jasitt serves as a primary liaison between coaches and faculty. A detail-oriented person and a diligent worker, Dr. Jasitt has developed a solid understanding of the operations of the Athletics Department, the staff and the needs of its student-athletes. In addition to his administrative role within Athletics, Dr. Jasitt is also highly involved in promoting reading and literacy at all age levels. He was the 2008-09 president of the TTU Council of the International Reading Association and is still actively involved in that organization. He also has served on the President’s Commission on the Status of Women for seven years. Raised in York, Pa., he earned a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University in 1978 and added a master’s in public administration from Valdosta State University in 1987. In 1993, he received a master’s degree in education from Old Dominion University and added a Ph.D. in literacy education from Tennessee Tech in 2004. Dr. Jasitt is a former Commander in the U.S. Navy. His wife of 30 years, Donna White Jasitt, is a former Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. They have two children, Ian and Meagan. Ian recently reeived his second degree from Tech, this one in Environmental Geology. Meagan is a senior Pre-Physical Therapy major at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The “WIN” program: Work Intensely Now

The WIN Program was implemented in the fall semester of 2004 to provide additional support for freshmen and student-athletes whose general academic progress places them at risk for maintaining eligibility and graduating. The program involves the student-athlete, coach(es), academic advisor, tutors, and others to build academic skills for success. Participation in the program is primarily based on grades, and coaches or the academic advisor may recommend additional participation at any time. All incoming freshmen meet at least one time per week with their coach to discuss academic progress and needs as well as time management and study skill techniques. Other aspects of the program include monitored study hours, tutoring, and study skills workshops.

a c a d e m i c s u p p o rt Winning in the Classroom Tennessee Tech’s commitment to its student-athletes is evident. The support personnel and resources available provide Golden Eagle student-athletes with the tools needed for success. The success of Tennessee Tech University’s athletic teams is tied closely to the academic progress of each student-athlete, and the academic performance of each Tech student-athlete is closely monitored by the coaching staff as well as an experienced staff in Academic Services. Tech’s student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Each semester, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll pays tribute to more than 200 students in athletics, including athletes, trainers, managers and cheerleaders, and the overall GPA of the department has climbed steeply in the past seven semesters. Student-athletes are the most visible component of a university, entertaining thousands of fans, students, alumni, family and friends. Their athletic abilities and achievements are a focus for national attention, as athletic events not only bring back faithful alumni, but serve as a welcome mat to the university for potential new students. Student-athletes devote many hours to practice, conditioning and training in an effort to be the best they can be. These hours are not required by non-athletes in the student body, and these extra demands can compete with academics for the student-athlete’s time and energy. The Tech Athletics Department works to provide help with course content (through tutors and monitored study hours) as well as with time management and study skills and any other academic support services that will allow Tech student-athletes to maximize their academic potential.

Joe Erdeljac was named in July 2008 as Head Athletic Trainer at Tennessee Tech University. Erdeljac previously served as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Tennessee Tech for seven years, and worked for nine years with high school athletes for the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Erdeljac was at Tech from 1992 to 1999. During that time, he was the Athletics Trainer for the men’s basketball team and worked with the student-athletes on all of Tech’s teams.

A native of West Virginia, Erdeljac began his career in 1988 while an undergraduate at the University of West Virginia. Upon graduation with a bachelor’s degree in Science and Physical Education, he took a graduate assistant position at Austin Peay and received his master’s degree in 1989. His first full-time position was Assistant Athletic Trainer at LaSalle University prior to joining the Tech staff. After seven years at TTU, he accepted a position in 1999 with the CRMC as Head Athletic Trainer for Upperman High School in Baxter. During his time with CRMC, he was a volunteer athletic trainer at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, working with the basketball teams and other Olympic team members A member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), he is also in the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association (SEATA) and is currently serving as president of the Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society (TATS).

Assistant Athletic Trainers earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from East Carolina University where he worked with the football, volleyball and baseball teams, and also with high school teams in the area. He served as a graduate assistant in athletics at Chattanooga for two years. Prior to beginning his collegiate studies, Fox had more than 10 years of service in the U.S. Army, spending his time on active duty as a paratrooper and combat medic. He was in Operation Iraqi Freedom II from 2003 to 2005.

Upton Dabney joined the athletic training staff at Tennessee Tech in 2008 after serving five years at Oregon Tech where he personally handled all of the sports medicine needs for the school’s 11-sport athletic program. A graduate of Morristown (Tenn.) East High School, he earned a degree from the Tennessee Institute of Electronics, worked for several years in the computer field, and in 1992 joined the U.S. Air Force where he worked in the medical field at Offutt AFB (Neb.) for four years. In 1996, Dabney returned to school for athletic training at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and worked at the University of Nebraska Medical School. He transferred to East Tennessee State in 1998, serving as a student athletic trainer before earning his bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training in 2001. He spent one year at Emporia (Kan.) State beginning graduate studies, then interned at Jacksonville (Fla.) University and finished a master’s degree in physical education while at The Citadel (SC) in 2003-04.

Jake Fox, a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for two years, became an assistant athletics trainer at Tennessee Tech University in 2010. Fox earned his masters degree in clinical exercise physiology while at Chattanooga, receiving it in May. A native of Canandaigua, N.Y., Fox

Adam Graham joined the Sports Medicine staff in 2011 as assistant athletic trainer. A graduate of Western Carolina with a master’s degree from West Virginia, Graham is a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., and a 2008 graduate of Western Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. As a student athletic trainer, he worked with the Catamount football and women’s basketball teams. During his time as an undergraduate, he also spent one summer in an internship position with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, working with the Bradenton Pirates in the Gulf Coast League. He also served in volunteer positions at the North Carolina State High School cross country and wrestling championships, and the Kentucky Bluegrass Games. As part of the WCU Athletic Training program, Graham had a stronghold on the department’s annual honors, winning the Outstanding Sophomore, Junior and Senior awards. After graduation, he spent one year in an internship position at Georgia Tech where he worked primarily with the Yellowjacket football team. His coverage also included working with the cross country and track teams, and the cheerleading squad. During 2010-11, Graham worked toward his master’s degree and served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at West Virginia University. His coverage with Mountaineer teams was with the baseball, cross country, track and football teams. He holds membership in several regional associations, and is also a member of the National Athletic Ali Trainers’ Association.

Dr. Richard Williams, M.S., M.D., serves as the Team Physician for Tennessee Tech student-athletes. A physician at Mid-State Sports Medicine, Dr. Williams has specialized in sports medicine throughout his professional medical career, including experience with high school, college, Olympic and professional athletes. He understands sports medicine from an athlete’s point of view, participating on track and field and basketball teams during his high school and collegiate careers. A 1975 graduate of Crawfordsville (Ind.) High School, Dr. Williams also spent one year as a foreign exchange student in West Germany. He graduated Cum Laude (A.B.) from Dartmouth College, and went on to earn an M.S. degree in Medical and Molecular Genetics from Indiana University, and an M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Williams worked with the Indianapolis Colts training camp and provided volunteer medical support for high school soccer and football teams in Indianapolis during his senior year in medical school, and also served as a research assistant at the Methodist Sports Medicine Center. During his residency at the University of Cincinnati Hospitals, Dr. Williams provided coverage for local high school and college football teams, and worked extensively with the University of Cincinnati athletic teams. He earned an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship with Kentucky Sports Medicine in Lexington, and during the 1994-95 season was the team physician at Eastern Kentucky University, including primary game coverage in football and basketball, and training room coverage for all sports. Since 1995, Dr. Williams has been in practice in the Upper Cumberland. He has assumed primary responsibility, training room care and game coverage and injury treatment for all of Tennessee Tech’s athletic programs along with area high schools.

Dr. James TALMAGE Consultant

Dr. James Talmage, M.D., has over a decade of providing a variety of services to Tennessee Tech’s more than 300 student-athletes as general practitioner and consultant to the sports medicine staff. Currently a physician at the Occupational Health Center, Dr. Talmage moved to Cookeville in 1979 and has worked closely with the Tech sports medicine staff since 1987. While working with all men and women athletes, his primary area is the women’s basketball program. After graduating with a degree in Physiology from The Ohio State University in 1968, he was Summa Cum Laude in 1972 from the OSU medical school. He is Board Certified both in orthopedic surgery and in emergency medicine, and among his published works and lectures have been numerous items relating to athletic injuries and sports medicine.

Medical Support Staff

Physical Therapy for Student-Athletes TTU/CRMC Golden Eagle Sports Medicine Therapy Center is located inside the east side of Tucker Stadium on the TTU campus. The center specializes in athletic and orthopedic injuries and creates a convenient way for students, faculty and staff to attend physical therapy without leaving campus. The center is operated by a community partnership between Cookeville Regional Medical Center and Tennessee Tech, and is also open to members of the community.

Eric Tarsi is the physical therapist for the TTU/CRMC Golden Eagle Sports Medicine Therapy Center. Tarsi comes to Cookeville with nearly 10 years experience in sports medicine, physical therapy and rehabilitation, most recently having worked for a year in Nashville at Lean Physical Therapy. Prior to that, he spent a year in the Monterey/ San Jose region of California as a traveling physical therapist, working mainly in home health and acute care. A native of Kingsford, Mich., Tarsi graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2002 with his M.S. in Physical Therapy after completing his undergraduate degree at GVSU in Health Sciences. Tarsi is engaged to Katie Reber; the couple resides in Cookeville and plays to marry in June of 2012. To make an appointment, Tarsi will be reached at the center by calling (931) 783-2463.

Dr. William C. Francis Athletic Training Complex Tennessee Tech University’s athletic training complex was renamed the Dr. William C. Francis Student Therapy/Athletic Training Complex on November 7, 1992, in recognition of the dedicated, long-time team physician who was instrumental in the health care of all Tech student-athletes for 35 years. The state-of-the-art facility is located in the east side of Tucker Stadium. A 1953 Tech graduate who served as the football team’s captain and was president of the student body, Dr. Francis was inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. Dr. Francis passed away on October 13, 1996.

The Tennessee Tech strength and conditioning program is a blend of science, technology, nutrition and one-on-one attention to each athlete. Golden Eagle student-athletes make a year-round commitment to physically preparing to play their sport at the highest level. At TTU, a program is tailored to match each student-athlete’s individual needs with the sport-specific physical demands. This includes strength, speed, power, agility, flexibility, metabolic conditioning and motivation. This combination allows Tennessee Tech’s student-athletes to better reach their specific goals. Another major focus of the strength staff is the development of sport-specific speed, agility and conditioning.

v Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Ohio, 2000

Chip Pugh is in his fifth year as Tennessee Tech’s strength and conditioning head coach. He oversees the physical development of student-athletes in all 14 sports, providing support in building toward championships. Pugh served three years in the same position at Winthrop University where he created and developed a highly successful strength and conditioning program that helped win 12 conference championships. An alumnus of Ohio University, he was an offensive lineman on the football team while earning a bachelor’s degree in sport industry and a master’s degree in physical education. Pugh believes that the qualities that athletes can develop in strength and conditioning will not only aid in their athletic development, but will also help them build quality character components necessary for life. A native of Parkersburg, W. Va., he began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant strength and conditioning coach where he primarily worked with men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s swimming,

and women’s soccer. He also assisted coach Ethan Reeve, currently the head strength and conditioning coach at Wake Forest, with football while at Ohio. After leaving Ohio University he became the head strength and conditioning coach for football at Marietta (Ohio) College, where he also worked as an assistant football coach. Additionally, during his two years at Marietta College he also served as a campus minister to the college. Pugh is a certified member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches’ Association. He also holds the Club Coach certification through USA Weightlifting. He is a Level-I certified CrossFit trainer and conducts personal training classes open to the public using the CrossFit methods. Chip and his wife, the former Nicole Carey, were married July 29, 2000. They live in Cookeville, where they are active in sprint triathlons and CrossFit. The couple welcomed a daughter, Rory Love Pugh, in October.

s t re n g t h & C o n d i t i o n i n g Development of Core Strength Imagine the body is a 3-link chain with the head and arms being one link, the torso/trunk being the second link and the legs being the third link. If the core link (trunk/torso) is weak or inflexible, there is little chance of maximizing potential because all body movement stems from the core. Train using ground-based, multi-joint lifting versus machine lifting Most athletes participate in stand up power sports using many muscle groups at once. The emphasis of training should be on total body athleticism and flexibility rather than having body weight supported by a machine and forcing isolation of just one muscle group. By incorporating ground-based lifts and exercises that focus on the total body, the athlete becomes more prepared to use their whole body in sport skills.

Assistant Strength Coaches

Train for Power (which results in increased speed) Power = (Mass Moved x Distance)/time. The less time it takes to move a mass a certain distance, the higher the output. As seen in the above formula, an increase in speed of movements results in an increase in power. Train Athleticism Many factors are included in athleticism: strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, coordination, fitness level and mental toughness are just a few. It is the goal to maximize an athlete’s overall athleticism. Train as a Team When teams train together, it provides another opportunity to develop chemistry, teamwork, leadership skills and a competitive environment. Within this competitive environment, teams can work on mental toughness, attacking the weights and maintaining a positive attitude. By enabling athletes to work on these things as a team, it helps to promote a stronger sense of unity, therefore making it harder to “fold” under pressure. Make workouts short and intense There are many philosophies on how to get athletes stronger, faster and more flexible. But, when combined, these philosophies have the same three underlying principles: a) The workouts should be highly organized b) The workouts should be short in duration c) The workouts should be extremely intense

SCHABERT v Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Information and Braodcasting St. Cloud State, 1977 Heading into his 30th year on the Tennessee Tech athletics staff, Rob Schabert is assistant athletics director for sports information and broadcasting. He joined the Tech staff on Sept. 8, 1982, and has been going full-speed ever since, working not only in publicizing Tech’s studentathletes and staff but also in promotions and marketing for the athletics department. In September 2008 he was inducted into the Hall of Distinction at Minnesota State University (Mankato). An active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), he has attended the organization’s annual workshop in 29 of his 35 years in the profession. He has served on numerous CoSIDA committees, including Ethics, Academic All-America and Writing, and he currently serves on the Olympic Liaison Committee. In 2004, he was voted winner of the university’s Outstanding Professional Award, and in July 2005 was promoted to his current title. A tireless worker, Schabert has won dozens of national publications and writing awards, including “Best in the Nation” from USA Volleyball for his annual media guide six times. Schabert, 55, has established several programs within the department. He created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in 1987 and initiated the President’s Awards program in 1991. He also established the Woman of the Year/Man of the Year awards along with the Outstanding Male and Female Athlete awards. He is active in the TTU Sports Hall of Fame selection process and serves as the emcee of the annual Hall of Fame Dinner. Schabert has promoted the selection of numerous Tech Academic All-Americans and is extremely active in promoting both the academic and athletic accomplishments of Tech’s student-athletes. Another wing of his operation is the day-to-day production and operations of the vast Tech athletics web site, TTUsports.com. Rob and his staff also serve as the hosts to all media attending athletics events on campus.

Over the past several years, many of the interns who have worked for Schabert have moved into full-time positions in the Sports Information profession at a wide variety of colleges and universities, including Appalachian State, UAB, Xavier, Idaho, Texas State and University of Nethe w Mexico. A Minnesota native who learned the trade under the guidance of his father, Bob (a long-time Minnesota Sportswriter), Rob earned his bachelor’s degree in mass communications from St. Cloud (Minn.) State University in 1977, spent one year in the Minnesota Twins public relations office, and was SID for five years at Mankato State University. He was a charter member of the St. Cloud chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalist. In 2002, Rob was a volunteer with the Salt Lake Olympic Committee as a member of the Press Operations staff. Rob and his wife, Joan, have two grown children who are also in the public relation business -- Matt (Morehead State sports information) and Kristen (U.S. Army public affairs). They also have one grandson, Jacob.

Sports Information Assistants Nick Burns, 26, joined the Tennessee Tech Sports Information staff in July of 2010 and is in his second season on the staff. He is the primary contact for volleyball, women's basketball and baseball, and the secondary contact for tennis. A native of Bloomington, Minn., he is a 2007 graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with a public relations emphasis. As an undergraduate, Burns was a reporter for the campus newspaper covering the men's and women's track and field and golf teams and writing feature stories. He also worked in the school’s athletic communications office helping with gameday services and writing. From 2007 to 2009, Burns was a graduate assistant in the MSU athletic communications office, serving as the primary contact for the volleyball and women's basketball teams for two seasons, and the softball, men's and women's track and field and tennis teams for one season. He produced publications, was the in-game statistician for all Maverick home events, updated the athletic website and filled in as guest host of the weekly Maverick Magazine radio show. During the 2008-09 women's basketball season, Burns served as the primary contact when the team won the Division II NCAA National Championship in San Antonio. He has also worked at the WCHA Final Five. Tommy Dillard, 25, joined the Tech Sports Information staff in July after serving as sports editor of the Murray Ledger & Times. Dillard served as the beat writer covering Murray State athletics and coordinated coverage of the university as well as several high schools. He was also responsible for page and section design, photography and web site maintenance. At Tech, Dillard will handle several aspects of media relations for the athletics department, including the production of publications, press releases and human interest articles. He will serve as the primary sports information contact for the soccer and men’s basketball teams, as well as the golf, cross country and track teams. Prior to being named the sports editor of the newspaper in Murray in 2010, Dillard served three years as assistant sports editor covering local high school athletics. He has also worked for the Associated Press, covering Murray State home athletic events as well as non-sports-related work. Dillard has earned numerous awards from the Kentucky Press Association. A native of Germantown, Tenn., Tommy graduated from Murray State in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. He married the former Elaine Kight on June 11.

The 25,000 square-foot facility will benefit every Golden Eagle student-athlete. Considered as the finest such facility in the Ohio Valley Conference, the APC features 10,000 square-feet for the new strength & conditioning room and 10,000 squarefeet for indoor practice facility.
