Players endured plenty of twists and tumble turns in a wild Wimbledon fortnight.

Andy Murray finally ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s champion at Wimbledon.

Black Wednesday A record number of injury outs and a rash of upsets marked the first Wednesday of Wimbledon, arguably the craziest day in Grand Slam history.

47

Quirky Marion is Queen of Wimbledon Surprise women’s champion Marion Bartoli is the first double-handed winner at Wimbledon.

Politics of the Players’ Box Wimbledon’s players’ box is unique; at no other Grand Slam are the fortunes of opposing camps so starkly contrasted.

Wimbledone! Andy Murray poignantly ended Britain’s interminable wait for a local men’s champion at Wimbledon. By DARREN SALIGARI

W

hen Fred Perry defeated Gottfried von Cramm 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 to win The Championships in 1936, nobody would have predicted that a drought was about to begin at the All England Club. It was a drought that would last until 2013. That’s 77 years of heartbreak. Seven decades of dashed hopes. And a lifetime of unrealised dreams turned to dust on the lush lawns of Wimbledon. But in Andy Murray, Britain at last has its champion. Anyone who didn’t see the fi nal could be forgiven for thinking that Murray, the No.2 seed, had a relatively easy win over top seed Novak Djokovic. What the 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 scoreline does not convey is that this was one of the most taxing and enthralling three-set matches ever played. AUSTRALIAN TENNIS MAGAZINE | August 2013

15

Quirky Marion Queen of Wimbledon One of the most unusual women’s tournaments in Wimbledon history fittingly ended with the game’s most unorthodox player, Marion Bartoli, hoisting the Venus Rosewater Dish. By MATT TROLLOPE

TOMMY STILL HAAS WHAT IT TAKES In his first full season in pro tennis, a teenaged Tommy Haas was the youngest player in the top 50. Sixteen years on, the all-court stylist is still winning titles and knocking off number ones. Fit and eager at 35, Haas personifies the trend of maturing greatness. By BARRY WOOD

H

e’s been on the ATP Tour since Pete Sampras versus Andre Agassi was the marquee rivalry in 1996 and, although a grandfather in tennis-pro terms, Tommy Haas still has what it takes to beat the best. Last June the LA-based German did the almost impossible by defeating Roger Federer on grass to win the Halle title, and in Miami last March he got the better of Novak Djokovic. In May he captured his 14th singles title in Munich to become the fi rst 35-year-old winner of an ATP title since Fabrice Santoro in Newport five years ago. At Roland Garros, Haas became the oldest Grand Slam quarterfi nalist since Andre Agassi in 2005. All this over a decade on from his career-high ranking of No.2 and his silver medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
