I
f you love tennis, then it’s natural that you’ll love an Australian summer too. There are long hours of daylight, warm evenings and opportunities aplenty to pick up a racquet and simply play. Whether your focus is serious summer competition or more social play with family and friends, the good news is that it’s never been easier to spend time on court. Where once tennis required careful planning and a substantial commitment of time, participation no longer needs to be of the most formal variety. That’s also true at the most junior level, with MLC Tennis Hot Shots already attracting some 600,000 participants throughout the nation – a number that’s growing as young players enjoy the fun and excitement of their first experience of tennis.
Making it even easier for players of every age and ability to get the most from their tennis are the tips that you’ll find in our special summer issue. Training for endurance, eating with hydration in mind, sunsmart strategies and cheating the heat are some of the topics we’ve covered for your summer of hitting. There’s also the latest equipment news as we review the latest-release racquets. The other thing that’s special about an Australian summer, of course, are the stars that light up centre courts at high-stakes tournaments around the nation. Christmas lunches have barely settled before Grand Slam champions, current and former No.1s, tennis’ “next big things” and our own local favourites are starting their new seasons on Australian soil. And while we await the arrival of those established stars, there
are other rising players taking some of their most important steps at this month’s December Showdown at Melbourne Park, where Australian junior national champions will be crowned and local players will compete for a coveted wildcard prize at the Australian Open Play-off. You can read our preview of the players to watch in those events from page 49. If it’s inspiration you’re after, there’ll be plenty as you watch and play this Australian summer. Enjoy the sunny days but even more importantly, do so with a racquet in your hand if you can. You never know where it might take you. Tennis might seem like a seasonal sport but your passion to play, and the benefits that accompany it, can last all year long.

Rafael Nadal The comeback player of 2013 will surge higher up the ‘all time greats’ list should he claim a 14th major at Australian Open 2014. Following his No.1 return, it seems highly possible.

tory of the year was Rafael Nadal’s thunderous comeback. Who could have imagined a 10-title haul for Rafa and a return to No.1 when he lost his comeback final at low-key Vina del Mar to journeyman Horatio Zeballos? Back in his element at the French Open, the 27-year-old became the only man to win a Grand Slam title eight times, and the first to win a major for nine consecutive years. On the hardcourts that were supposed to be murder on his knees, Rafa was 22-0 by the end of the US Open, where he toppled Novak Djokovic to become the de facto season No.1. He left New York with a 15-1 record against the top 10. Nadal officially took over the No.1 ranking in Beijing (ironically in a loss to Djokovic), capping his “most emotional” season. An epic career now has its epic-comeback chapter.

A
ndy Murray served up another Union Jack-waving victory, turning Wimbledon into the ‘And of Hope and Glory’ as the first British male champion in 77 years. The Scot toppled No.1 Djokovic in straight sets, though his hairiest moments came in a two-sets-down, 7-5-in -thefifth quarterfinal comeback against Fernando Verdasco. PM David Cameron threw open the doors to No.10 Downing Street, the Royal Mail had Brits across the country licking the back of Muzza’s head on postage stamps and Prince William awarded Murray an OBE. On Twitter, Murray later posted a pic of his mutt Maggie May wearing his medal.

S
erena Williams is aging like a fi ne red from her adopted France. Has any other champion been at her playing peak at age 32? Martina Navratilova was 33 when she claimed her last singles major at Wimbledon 1990, but long gone from the No.1 spot, while Serena is dominating. Her vintage 2013 season took in the French and US titles for a Grand Slam tally of 17, and career-best marks of 11 titles and 78 match wins (for only four losses). “I’m actually serving harder than I ever have in my career,” Serena said at the US Open, where she passed Margaret Court as the oldest women’s champion. “The racquets are stronger and I’m more fit. I have been able to keep up with the times.” The timeless champion is destined to move up the all-time list (currently at No.5). Suddenly, 20 Grand Slams doesn’t seem a big stretch.

ovak Djokovic began 2013 as the dominant No.1, notching the first Australian Open three-peat of the pro era. He proved even more unbeatable as No.2, drawing motivation rather than misery from his dethroning by Nadal. After losing the US Open final and top season honours to the Spaniard, Djokovic went on a 24-match tear through the Davis Cup semis, Beijing (defeating Nadal on the very day he lost the top spot), Shanghai, Paris, the ATP World Finals in London and the Davis Cup final. POWER The amount of speed that the racquet generates on the ball and the ease that the racquet provides power in the serve, ground strokes and volleys. CONTROL The ability to manoeuvre the ball around the court. The feeling of having the ball stick to the strings and feeling the abilty to place the ball anywhere in the court. SPIN The amount of spin that the racquet helps put on the ball. The ease of the racquet in aiding spin production. PLAYABILITY The overall score of how forehand, backhand, serve and volleys are played with the racquet. FEEL Valuing the combination of weight and feel in the player’s hand. The comfort of the racquet when playing shots and the ability to feel in control of the racquet.
