WIMBLEDON
2013 It’s high noon in the tennis year. Wimbledon
annually produces the biggest victories, shocks, dramas and intrigue of the season. Follow the leading contenders and Aussie hopes with our 2013 formbook by ETHAN JAMES. Let the turf wars begin!
ROGER AIMS FOR EIGHT
I
t was almost a case of ‘back to the future’ at last year’s Wimbledon, with Roger Federer clinching a memorable title and reclaiming the world No.1 ranking. All eyes will again be focused on the Swiss veteran as he attempts to break Pete Sampras’ record of seven Wimbledon crowns. He’ll face tough opposition from the younger legs of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, as well as a resurgent Rafael Nadal. Or will a big hitter in the form of Tomas Berdych or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga spoil the party?
Novak Djokovic Wimbledon best: Winner 2011 Ranked: No.1; 2012 result: Lost in semi-finals to Roger Federer
Attempting to defend his 2011 Wimbledon crown, the 25-year-old Serb was ousted by Federer in four sets in last year’s semifinal. Djokovic enters the 2013 event in sensational form, having claimed the
Australian Open as well as titles in Doha and Monte Carlo, where he ended Nadal’s eight-year dominance. Able to prosper on all surfaces, he’ll fancy his chances of adding a second Wimbledon title to his growing record.
Roger Federer Wimbledon best: Winner 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012; Ranked: No.2; 2012 result: Defeated Andy Murray in final
The Swiss maestro will be looking for another slice of history at this year’s tournament. Sitting equal with Pete Sampras on seven titles, an eighth Wimbledon crown will see Federer become the most prolific winner in the open era. His biggest challenge will come from the rest of the ‘Big Four’ but the likes of crisp hitters Berdych and Tsonga can’t be discounted – they knocked out the seventime champion in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
