REBECCA COPELAND

I’m listening to ‘Green’ by Touché Amoré. My favourite dessert is red wine and chocolate.

My favourite holiday destination is Paris. Everything about the city is magical; the museums, the architecture, the markets at Christmas—everything.

I enjoy photography because it’s my way of interpreting the world, the self and others.

I love going to concerts where you know all the words to the songs, which is why The 1975 stood out for me.

The best place in the world is anywhere the sun and moon shines!

I enjoy writing because words bring people together. I can make audiences consider, understand or feel something when they weren’t expecting to. A thought or emotion put onto paper is a powerful thing—people don’t feel so alone when they have something to relate to.

PHOTOGRAPHER

If I could travel to anywhere in the world I’d go to Iceland, India, Africa. Do I have to pick one? There’s too many! Every day I try to think of seven different things—like an elephant sitting on a toilet—because 90% of our daily thoughts are the same as yesterday’s.

JOURNALIST

My favourite sweet food combos are chocolate coated strawberries and caramel popcorn! I never leave the house without Carmex lip balm and hand cream. When I’m not writing for TEO, I Study law and journalism at UniSA. I also dabble in poetry and handlettering under the name Bec Reflects Writing Studio.

EDITOR’S LETTER Two things we love at TEO are good food and good music, and we wanna show you a good time with both. In our first issue for 2018, we take you to the best bars in Australia with a complete list of where to go, why it rocks and which stars approve. We also serve you a selection of the coolest Aussie diners so you can live out your 1950s diner dreams. If you’re after eye candy, then flip over to our fashion pages for two photo series created at Adelaide’s Crown and Anchor Hotel as well as at Adelaide Casino’s very own diner, Patty Mac’s. We’ve also got some sweet illustrations and a froth-worthy photo journal from America to fulfil your vintage pastel needs. We introduce you to some of our current favourite brands and creative masterminds; think ethical streetwear, cheeky photography, ethical tattoo aftercare, fashion (with a hint of music) from the streets of Melbourne, and a guitar slaying and photo taking wiz. It’s all in there, baby! For dessert? We bring you the best in music at the moment: what’s on at Adelaide Casino at the Oasis Bar and which young musicians we’re watching. Lick your lips and eat it all up. Susannah x

GEORGIA MAE LAUNCHES FOURTH COLLECTION DIRECTOR OF THE MELBOURNE BASED LABEL, GEORGIA HODGES, REVEALS WHAT’S IN STORE FOR HER JUNE COLLECTION. Georgia Hodges’ love for design blossomed in 2013 when she would spend countless nights sewing clutches in her mum’s kitchen. Her hobby soon turned into a business when she began posting her creations on Instagram, and started receiving requests from people wanting to buy them. The next two years saw Georgia launch her first basic online store, complete an internship at Discount Universe, and create her first collection of manufactured clutches and wallets. Georgia Mae is currently stocked in some of the biggest retailers both in Aus and in the USA, such as: Forever 21, Free People and Princess Polly. Now she’s set to launch her fourth collection, which will be arriving in June. We caught up with the designer in a rare moment of downtime for her to chat about what to expect from the upcoming collection, and get a feel for all things Georgia Mae.

T E O M A G

TEO: How has Georgia Mae shifted and developed throughout the years? Georgia: The first collection started off with five clutches and two wallet designs. I’ve since expanded to handbags, dresses and my hand-embellished bomber jackets, which have become a backbone for the label.

to my mum about being a magpie that’s drawn to shiny objects. I design products that I personally like and spend a long time sourcing the perfect fabric to complement that particular style.

The idea for the bomber jackets came to me when I was in New York City in 2016 exhibiting at my first trade show. I was a bit unsure at the time, but I’m so glad I produced these—they’ve been incredibly popular and really helped the label to be where it is today.

The ‘Lola’ bag is one of your bestsellers. I read that you plan to keep it in upcoming collections. Why do you think this piece has been so popular? I personally didn’t think the ‘Lola’ bag would take off like it has! I’ve seen so many round shaped bags over the years and thought it would just be another. I decided to put my own spin on it—the signature star hardware strap, which I think made it a bit unique.

Your fourth collection drops in June! What’s the next step for Georgia Mae? I can’t wait! I’ve put a lot of hard work into this one

I’ve done numerous productions of this style as it always sells out. I will be expanding the colour range, which a lot of people are excited about.

and will be introducing some new, fun accessory styles. I’m heading off to The States later in the year to exhibit at my fourth trade show, where I will be showing this collection. Trade shows are where a lot of the magic happens, so I’m really looking forward to that and sharing my new collection with everyone.

If you could describe the label in three words, what would they be? Kawaii, Harajuku, Cowgirl. A lot of your current pieces appear to be influenced by rock ‘n’ roll—for example, the ‘Wish You Were Here’ and ‘Wild Thing’ bombers, and the ‘Hendrix’ and ‘Ziggy’ bags. What’s your take on the connection between music and the label? Will this theme continue on into the future? I’m a massive music lover, so a lot of the products are named after some of my favourite music artists. Every single product name has a special personal meaning or story to it. This theme will definitely continue for future collections. Your upcoming collection has a ’90s vibe to it, with strappy studded leather-look bags, iridescent metallic accessories and fluffy, pastel textures. What inspired you when designing these pieces? Even though I’m not a girly-girl, I’ve always been drawn to iridescent, out-there fabrics—I always joke

Who are some of your favourite designers? I cut my teeth interning for Discount Universe as a recent university graduate, and I have always appreciated their unique designs and how much effort goes into each piece. So, they’ll always have a special place in my heart. Who wears Georgia Mae and where would you find a typical GM customer hanging out? My customers come from all over the world. I like to think that they would be a little bit like me in a way—a risk taker, on a crazy trip overseas somewhere and not afraid to wear whatever the hell they want. What’s your go-to wardrobe essential? A vintage t-shirt (or 10). You can never have too many! I literally live in old band and Harley Davidson tees—everyone that knows me would tell you this is all I wear.

ONE HUNGRY PHOTOGRAPHER: ALLY KAZACOS SHARES HER JOURNEY AS A KICK-ASS CREATIVE HOW CREATING EYE CANDY PROGRESSED TO ALLY’S DREAM BUSINESS Originally Ally Kazacos wanted to be an actress, but looking back, she’s pretty glad she dodged that bullet. For five years now, Ally has gone by her alias One Hungry Photographer—covering events and organising photo shoots for her clients. Based in Sydney, she’s known for her cheeky and sexy style of shooting as well as her undeniably relaxed attitude and great sense of humour. Ally’s love of photography sparked back in 2009 when she studied it at school for the first time. From there she started practicing on her friends, taking a point and shoot to parties and uploading the photos to Myspace and Facebook. “When people started really asking me to bring my camera and take shots I was like, well, I gotta get paid for this!” Ally says. “This is what I want to do. And, yeah, I’ve been shooting ever since!”

20

Her business name, One Hungry Photographer, surprisingly didn’t come from her love of food—despite how often she uses it as props in her shoots. “When I started shooting, I didn’t really want ‘Ally Kazacos Photography,’ I didn’t want ‘Ally K Photography.’ I didn’t want to put a person to my

images; I wanted them to speak for themselves,” Ally says.

“I think it’s because I saw One Hungry as sort of like an enterprise—I saw it more as the bigger picture rather than me as a photographer.”

In the end, she adapted her Tumblr name One Hungry

Model to be One Hungry Photographer (note: she wasn’t actually a model—this was back when making a random

Tumblr name was the popular thing to do). “I used hungry in the sense of being driven, like when you thrive for something; like, you’re hungry, you go after it,” she says. And so One

Hungry Photographer became her alias, so much so that people were taken aback when it was a young woman who rocked up to the shoot. “I guess that’s why I didn’t go by

my sex or anything in the first place, because as much as we don’t like to admit it, it’s a very male-dominated world.”

The most recent addition to her brand is the One Hungry apparel line, including a muscle tee with her logo—a camera in a mouth—at the back. “I developed my logo with a designer in Bali named Fahmi Nauderer and we went back and forth with ideas,” Ally explains. “The mouth is actually based on my own mouth. I was inspired by Mambo and all their really cool designs…I was just really happy with the logo. And I was like you know what? I’ve always wanted to do shirts or something fun.” In December of last year, One Hungry Photographer celebrated their fifth birthday, and in that time Ally’s seen a lot of changes happen to the industry: “when I first started out there was a lot of traction around my website and my Tumblr and even Facebook. And now everything’s on Instagram—people won’t know I’ve done a shoot unless I put it up on Instagram.” But the digital age has created new challenges for working photographers, from copyright issues to sourcing work. “I mean with any industry, everything’s oversaturated now,” she says. “With all the social media, anyone with a really good camera phone can be a photographer; doesn’t matter if you’ve gone to uni or if you’ve studied it. The whole game is changing, and it’s sad but at the same time we can’t live without it—I get a lot of my jobs through my Instagram.”

Konakov

But it’s Ally’s niche style of photography as well as her lively personality that keeps her busy and successful. “I like putting a little bit of myself into each of my shoots,” she explains. “There’s always a strong storyline or reason behind why I’m shooting it.” And it’s this personality, as well as her passion for what she does, that has seen her make some incredible friendships over the years. “The girl pictured in this feature—I found her on Facebook when she was 15. Scout is her name. And I was like ‘you’re amazing, I’d love to shoot you,’ and so I did her first shoot with her. We’re really good friends now, so I thought it would be nice to bring her back for my fifth birthday.” So in the words of Ally: “Always hungry. Stay hungry. One hungry.”

INTRODUCING // MIA GARCIA NEO-SOUL/FUNK/R&B • PRODUCER | MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST • 18 YEARS • SAN DIEGO, CA/LOS ANGELES, CA

FAST FIVE How long has music been a big part of your life? Music has always been part of my life. I had a few guitar lessons when I was nine years old, but have taught myself on every other instrument I play. I began to write and produce music around the age of 16/17 and have been doing it ever since. What has been your greatest achievement as a musician, so far? Learning and playing with some of my favourite musicians and artists. What would be your dream collaboration? I would love to collaborate with Hiatus Kaiyote and Nai Palm; I am obsessed with their sound and the beautiful harmony and rhythm they achieve within their music. Not to mention, ultimate production inspiration. J U N E

Which guitar from your collection do you cherish most? Each guitar I have I use at different times within the creative process. Currently, I really love my Ibanez GB10; it’s an absolute beauty and so fun to play. It is definitely the most creatively inspiring at the moment but this changes all the time. Where do you see yourself in three years? I see myself collaborating and producing for my favourite artists and musicians. My goal is to also have at least two albums out which will feature musicians that inspire me most. I hope to also go on tour and travel the world, meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. Keep an eye out for Mia’s debut EP, late 2018.

BROOKYN-BASED GUITARIST-FOR-HIRE AND PHOTOGRAPHER, AURORE OUNJIAN, DISCUSSES WHAT IT’S LIKE LIVING ON THE ROAD, HER EYE FOR COLOUR AND WHY SHE WON’T GO SOLO.

Depending on the perspective you take, or the lens you use, life can be extraordinary. This is truly the case for Aurore Ounjian, whose extraordinary life starts, first and foremost, in the tour van. Living life on the road as a freelance guitarist has given her the opportunity to explore her interest in photography under the alias No Allowance.

We caught up with the multi-talented Aurore to

discover her inspirations as a photographer, her journey as a musician and the challenges of both.

TEO: Your photos capture the pastel beauty in the

Not only are you a photographer, but you’re also a guitarist-for-hire, playing live with various bands.

How has being a musician on tour assisted your pursuit of photography and vice versa?

Touring in a band has played a huge part in my

typically bleak and mundane. Why has this been a

photography and vice versa. First and foremost, I

Aurore: It’s not that I deliberately focus on pastels and

and seeing new places is instrumental (pun sort of

get to be in a new city every single day. Travelling

mundane imagery—it’s just simply what I am attracted

to...to [the] point where I do a double take and my tongue rolls out of my mouth à la Looney Tunes.

In a lot of cases, pastels have naturally become their colour due to wear and tear, sun bleaching or aging, and with that comes a bleak, sad feeling that I love to capture in a photograph and try to make beautiful again.

new surroundings and am always itching to go on mini explorations. However, when I’m five weeks

into a tour and have been sitting in a van for nine hours, the last thing I’m feeling is inspired. But when I think of the feeling I get after capturing the

perfect photograph, I force myself to get out of the venue and start walking. Whether I come back with

T E O M A G A Z I N E . C O M . A U

T E O M A G

a photograph or not, I’m always so happy to have

walked around a new city. Music gets me to the place and photography helps me see it better.

You played 151 shows in 2017! How do you stay healthy (and sane) while on the road?

Who said I was sane? You have to be a little crazy to play 151 shows in one year! I try to live a healthy

lifestyle both on and off tour so, when I hit the road, I try to keep a similar diet and try to walk as much as possible. Whole Foods is always a saviour on tour and

I find that most major cities have great coffee shops

and restaurants—it’s the No-wheres-ville gas stations and rest stops that make it hard! This is why I always

have avocados, mulberries, dried dates, apples, and nuts in the van. Having said all that, I won’t pass up a little Taco Bell every now and then!

My favourite van snack is: smashed avocado on rice cake

with cayenne, garlic powder, salt and pepper. My favourite pre-show boozy beverage is tequila and kombucha.

Have you ever considered going solo or creating your own band?

As for photographers, I stalk so many emerging artists on Instagram who blow me away with each and every post. Most have few followers but deserve 2.8M and a blue check mark. What gear do you always have on tour with you? Can you give us a rig rundown? I am not a label junky by any means but there are two that I swear by: Fender and Dr. Martens. You’ll always see me playing a Fender guitar. I grew up playing one and I don’t think I could ever make the switch. I also love ZVEX for always making the coolest, handpainted, boutique effects pedals ever! My rig: • Fender ‘68 Reverb Deluxe • Fender Duo Sonic (in Daphne Blue) Out of music and photography, what is your greatest achievement to date? I get to travel the world, play music, and take home photographs as souvenirs to share with all of you. The fact that I can do this as a job is my greatest achievement yet.

No. Over a decade ago, I started a band with my best

friend and it evolved into something really special. We were living out our dream, despite dealing with all the ups, downs, and obstacles that bands have to face.

After many years of investing our souls into the band, we had to call it quits. I never stopped believing in our

band but with the music industry being such a tough place, it always felt like we gave more than we got

back. As much as I loved every second of that ride, I am truly happy playing a role in other people’s dreams,

without having to deal with the crazy big bumps and

pot holes along the way. Plus, I’ll always find a way to make these rides my own adventure.

Are there any photographers or musicians who have inspired you or is this a very individual journey?

Growing up, I was inspired by so many legendary musicians:

Kurt

Cobain,

Joey

Santiago,

Carrie

Brownstein, and Rivers Cuomo—the list goes on! Today, I am inspired by fellow musicians who do this

day-in and day-out and are the kindest people I know.

Creator of Lucid8, Laura Vogt, was aware of the current clothing production and consumption practices and the growing change towards ethical fashion, and wanted to create something that reflected this. Lucid8 stands against the reliance upon slave labour, animal cruelty, excessive water consumption, product wastage and excessive consumerism, which is also shared by its brands. It stocks high quality labels free from animal skins, mass production and fast-fashion trends. TEO spoke with Laura to hear more about her ethical mission and how she’s achieving it.

Lucid8’s ethical stance is a reflection of Laura’s lifestyle. When it comes to sourcing designers, she makes it her personal responsibility to ensure they don’t work out of factories promoting slave labour or mass production. “I question each designer on how they ethically source their fabrics and whether they use animal products,” Laura explains. “Finally, I ask them to make only what’s needed, so I am not over-buying or encouraging my customers to over-consume.” People are becoming more conscious of where they buy their products and how they’re made and as this awareness amongst consumers increases, large companies are pushed to fall in line. “I believe businesses have a responsibility to be transparent,” Laura says. “If they hold back information, this may be a sign not to buy from them.” When companies fail to deliver ethically or sustainably, people notice. “I remember a particular brand advertising a rabbit fur coat and the backlash it received from customers,” Laura says. “This sparked some ideas [for me] to focus more on the ethics of clothing.”

Shopping ethically can be a challenge, but it’s not unachievable. We’re all slowly learning that as consumers, we have a responsibility to look for transparency and ownership. If you already own mass produced fast-fashion, Laura recommends doing things like recycling, giving to friends and relatives or donating to local charities. And to make our transition to ethical shopping a little bit easier, she also hopes to introduce some basics to Lucid8 to appeal to a broader range of customers. “This will hopefully give people the option of mixing basics with alternative streetwear, allowing customers to create their entire unique and ethical style in one place,” she says.

As for what’s next for Lucid8? According to Laura, an ethical fashion event is on the cards for 2018. This would feature a fashion show, a raffle and a documentary screening showing the impact of slave labour in Bangladesh and China. Of course, the long term goal is to one day stock some of her dream labels, such as KTZ, Pam Perks and Cassette Playa. With resources like the internet readily available to consumers, gone are the days when animal cruelty is acceptable. As public awareness and demand for transparency grows, slave labour will no longer be sustainable. And as each store, like Lucid8, and individual, like Laura, question what is ‘normal,’ the norm will change.

ETHICAL & SUSTAINABLE AFTERCARE AUSSIE INKED FOUNDER HELEN SYKES DISCUSSES NATURAL AND ETHICAL ALTERNATIVES FOR TATTOO AND TATTOO REMOVAL AFTERCARE.

Her mission is to encourage tattoo artists to support Australian-made products that are created with natural ingredients, promoting the healing and preservation of your body art.

Aussie Inked is a cruelty-free brand. Can you tell us exactly what this means?

Cruelty-free means no testing on animals by the manufacturer, including the ingredients in each formulation.

How important was it to ensure the products were made in Australia using natural Australian ingredients? We are promoting Australian-made. We believe in

keeping jobs in the country. Ingredients such as kakadu plum, lilly pilly and quandong are unique Australian native plants that have evolved over hundreds of years.

Our ingredients are sourced from Australian farmers and our superfood ingredients, like kakadu plum, helps

to create jobs within indigenous communities where

agriculture would not be otherwise possible due to

harsh conditions. Kakadu plum contains 100 times more Vitamin C than any other fruit in the world, which means fast healing. It also has natural sunscreen properties and

is antibacterial. Aboriginal people have been using it for centuries to heal sores, burns and boils.

and hydrating. You can use the lotion more often as it’s a lighter texture. Both penetrate the skin easily without leaving a sticky residue. What are the most important steps to take after getting a tattoo or laser removal? • Follow your tattoo artist’s hygiene instructions and make sure you avoid using products with alcohol or other aggravating chemicals • Use your aftercare 2-3 times daily, and always after showering • Consume anti-inflammatory foods like pineapples— they contain bromelain, which is a natural antiinflammatory • You can take arnica tablets to prevent bruising pre and post tattooing and post laser removal • Avoid alcohol immediately before and after tattooing

conditions such as eczema, irritated and inflamed skin and nappy rash. The recovery gel is great for sunburn

and can also be used after shaving to soothe the skin. Neither will block pores and cause pimples, which can happen with some tattoo aftercare.

What makes the aftercare fast-healing?

The products are fast-healing as they let the skin breathe,

and they also include antioxidants and vitamins. If you use any other products with petroleum the skin doesn’t breathe, which will slow down the healing process. Some

of the more traditionally suggested aftercare brands are packed with parabens. Our aftercare is dedicated

to healing your tattoo fast and naturally without any chemicals that will seep into your bloodstream and get caught in the lymphatic system. Each Aussie Inked

ingredient is natural or certified organic and has a purpose, which targets a different part of the healing

cycle. We don’t pad out our products with cheap filler

Don’t go swimming in pools, the sea or have long soaking baths Stay out of the sun Stay away from the gym for a couple of weeks if you can

We have a great post laser treatment gel in our range, which will make your skin feel cool and soothed right after laser. The Blank Canvas Post Laser Gel should be continued throughout the healing period as with tattoo aftercare: it hydrates, stops the itching and heals the skin avoiding scarring, which can occur with some lasers. What is the significance behind your slogan ‘Life Goes On, Forever and Ever’? There’s traditional tattoo symbolism on each of the packages that I designed myself. ‘Life Goes On’ is the heart, the sword represents recovery and [as for] ‘Forever & Ever’—the skull represents beauty forever. I’ve called our post laser gel Blank Canvas, as it helps to create just that: a perfect new blank canvas for that next tattoo you’re dreaming of!

ingredients like palm oil or petroleum. We include everything that’s needed and nothing that’s not.

What is the difference between a healing lotion and a healing balm?

For someone with a really big tattoo that’s flaky and itchy, I suggest the balm because it’s nourishing, rich

GUITARS IN BARS BATTLE OF THE BANDS AT ADELAIDE CASINO OASIS BAR BANDS, BEVERAGES AND GOOD TIMES. A DV E R T I S I N G F E AT U R E

WORDS

Dasha Romanowski Matthias Pfeil

PHOTOGRAPHY

The Adelaide Casino presents: Guitars in Bars Battle of the Bands. The stand-alone Guitars in Bars series was launched in 2016 as a part of the biennial Adelaide Guitar Festival. Last year’s Guitars in Bars program was such a roaring success that the event will see an exciting spin-off in 2018. The Adelaide Casino will host a Guitars in Bars Battle of the Bands this July, where 12 artists will showcase their chops to be in the running for over $10,000 in cash and prizes. The competition will see bands, duos and soloists take to the stage at Adelaide Casino’s Oasis Bar to battle it out across two heats, where each artist will have 25 minutes to perform a set of originals or covers. Two bands from each of the heats will then advance to the grand final, where artists will perform a 40-minute set and be in the running to win from the prize pool. The first prize is made up of $5,000 in cash, a monthly residency at Oasis Bar (valued at $5,000) and an Adelaide Festival Centre professional development opportunity. The second prize includes one full day of recording at Mixmasters Studios (valued at $800), one mix and master at Milk & Honey Audio (valued at $800) and a ‘Golden Ticket’ to the Adelaide Guitar Festival. Pretty sweet, huh?

The Guitars in Bars event sees musicians putting on guitar-based events in locations ranging from pubs and restaurants to laundromats, breweries and markets. Last year’s Guitars in Bars saw a massive 555 artists across 160 events state-wide, which is pretty damn awesome for little old Adelaide. While applications for Guitars in Bars Battle of the Bands have closed, you can show your support for your favourite local artists at Heat 1 and 2, and the Grand Final at Adelaide Casino’s Oasis Bar. Why not head down, enjoy a bev and cheer on some of our incredible local talent?
