The 50th anniversary of the Denomination of Origin (DOT) for tequila marks a half-century since the Mexican government officially recognized and protected the geographical origin and production methods of tequila. This recognition has been pivotal in safeguarding the authenticity and quality of tequila, ensuring it can only be produced in designated regions of Mexico.

181 municipalities in the country have the DOT, which means that only the blue agave distillate produced in these areas can be marketed under the name of the distillate. Of these municipalities, 125 are in Jalisco, 30 in Michoacán, 11 in Tamaulipas, 8 in Nayarit and 7 in Guanajuato.

The Denomination of Origin of Tequila (DOT) is a distinctive that indicates the geographical origin of a product, which serves to designate an originating product, in this case the distillate. With this seal, the regional production of the drink is guaranteed, as well as its authenticity and quality, while safeguarding its history and unique characteristics.

The 30th anniversary of the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT) would be a significant milestone in the history of tequila regulation and promotion.

Established on May 17, 1994 as a non-profit organization, the AC Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT) is a civil organization that brings together the actors of the Agave Tequila chain, such as: agave producers, tequila producers, packers, distributors, marketers and government agencies.

The CRT has played a pivotal role in safeguarding the authenticity, quality, and heritage of Mexico’s iconic distilled beverage.

Three decades ago, the Mexican government, recognizing the need to protect tequila’s cultural and economic significance, entrusted the CRT with the task of overseeing every aspect of tequila production. From the cultivation of blue agave to the bottling of the final product, the CRT meticulously regulates every step to ensure adherence to strict quality standards.

Over the years, the CRT’s efforts have not only preserved tequila’s integrity but also elevated its global stature. Through rigorous certification processes and continuous quality control measures, the CRT has instilled confidence in consumers worldwide, cementing tequila’s position as a premium spirit of unparalleled excellence.
