Our Side Loading solution working wonders in Bogotá

In a pioneering venture for TRRG, five Speedline SCOPE CWS sideloader vehicles and 1,300 sideloader containers went into operation in Colombia earlier this year. The project is a first in Latin America for TRRG and the first joint venture between subsidiaries HS Fahrzeugbau in Germany & Ros Roca in Spain. The project also represents HS Fahrzeugbau’s first complete vehicle solution delivered outside of Europe.

The project is helping the city in its effort to employ a better, more sanitary waste collection system where Bogotá residentscan now dispose of waste into large volume 2.2 cubic metre containers that are collected regularly by the sideloading vehicles.

The HS Speedline SCOPE CWS side loader offers efficiency and safety

This new operation will provide a much-improved process compared to the old method of collecting waste from the streets using open-back vehicles, a practice that presented laborious and unsanitary conditions for crew members

TRRG’s Sales Manager for Latin America, Ana Alcerro playedan important role in making this project possible. She said:

“It’s significant that the collection system is not just for the wealthy Bogotanos, but collections will also operate in deprived areas where poverty is rife, we’re proud of the opportunity to help show these communities that their health and well-being is important too. “Of course, there is some education necessary but LIME is working with the local government to ensure that all stakeholders are on board and use the new waste systems.

“This project has underlined the clear benefits of the TRRG merger creating a larger group that can tap into a diverse product range and how that helps provide solutions together, in this case, a solution in a region where it is absolutely necessary.”

The super-efficient Speedline SCOPE CWS vehicles were manufactured at HS Fahrzeugbau’s facility in Emstek, Germany and shipped over to Colombia in December 2018 and are now fully operational across the city collecting containers manufactured in Tàrrega, Spain, by Ros Roca. When specifying the project requirements, LIME explained the logistical challenges they face, some of which are unique to Bogotá. Thanks to the diverse range of solutions available within TRRG, a solution was relatively simple to determine.

The Speedline SCOPE was the obvious choice for LIME as the advanced lifting system is not only developed to handle Ros Roca’s large 2.2 cubic metre containers, it can also deal with the high kerbs often found in Colombia. This allows safer control from within the comfort of the cab making the collection and emptying of sideloader containers extremely efficient.

The CWS bodies for the Speedline SCOPE vehicles provides a perfect solution by separating the processes of collection and disposal thanks to a removable body system, meaning that the dedicated collection vehicle can de-mount a full waste body and continue the collection rounds with an empty body, whilst a less specialised vehicle can transport one or more full bodies to landfill for emptying thereby increasing efficiencies and minimising non-productive time of the collection vehicle.

The geography of Bogotá provided a unique challenge, the city is very long and narrow, meaning that there is considerable distance between the collection areas in the North and the Southern landfill sites, a long and tedious journey taking hours due to limited road infrastructure. With Bogotá landfill sites so far removed from the collection areas, it makes little financial sense to have a collection vehicle travelling this journey when it could be employed collecting more waste.

Martijn Bruggeman, manager of HS Fahzreugbau, worked closely with Ana Alcerro on the project and is delighted by the outcome.

He said: “With TRRG now present in Latin America I am pleased that we were able assist in growing the group business in this area whilst also being able to showcase our innovative Speedline SCOPE CWS to help provide a better waste management system and improve living standards.

“We are proud to be working in Colombia’scapital with such a great project”

With such a successful blueprint for modern urban waste collection now available in Latin America, TRRG are confident of further growth in the market as the decision makers from other cities become aware of the tangible benefits that our solutions can offer.

The CWS changeable body system allows quick and safe mounting and unmounting of vehicle bodies to overcome logistical headaches where material processing or landfill facilities are located far from collection areas.
