Class of 2019 Graduation Edition

Catholic Central grads follow family tradition By Eileen Connelly, OSU Attending Catholic Central High School was truly all in the family for twins Adelaide and Hannah Taylor. Their grandparents and father are alums; older sisters, Katie and Erin, graduated in 2013 and 2016, respectively; and younger sibling, Mackenzie, is a member of the Class of ’20. “We loved being able to continue the tradition,” said Adelaide. “The teachers definitely recognized our names,” added Hannah. Both young women, who hail from St. Joseph Parish in Springfield, took part in a variety of activities during their time at Catholic Central, including membership in the Key Club, playing softball, serving as student ambassadors and in peer ministry. Participation in Kairos and community service opportunities gave the Taylor twins plenty of opportunity to grow in their Catholic faith. “For me, it was leading Kairos,” Adelaide said. “I really felt like the retreat brought our class together, helped us get to know each other on a deeper level, and brought us closer to God.”

“Going to school Masses and the service days really helped me live out my faith,” explained Hannah. “Hannah and Adelaide have a genuine passion to help others in any and all ways. We, at Catholic Central, were blessed to have them,” said Josh Mueller, campus minster and theology teacher. Sharing their high school experience was meaningful for the Taylors. “From the beginning, she was my number one best friend,” Adelaide said of her sister. “She was always by my side, and that was amazing.” The Taylor twins are headed for Mount St. Joseph University in the fall, where Adelaide plans to prepare for a career as an athletic trainer and Hannah will study nursing. “The teachers at Catholic Central really pushed us to try our hardest at everything we did,” said Hannah. “We learned time management skills and the importance of good note taking. We really feel confident now going into the college environment.”

Kairos retreat impacts Chaminade Julienne grad Dear CJ Class of 2020,

Your accomplishments throughout high

By Eileen Connelly, OSU Dave Cotton readily admits that as an eighth grader on his high school search, Chaminade Julienne (CJ) “wasn’t at the top of my list.” After shadowing there, however, he was drawn to the school’s diversity, welcoming atmosphere and the fact that the teachers are “bound by their faith and want to see every student succeed.” Cotton was involved in a variety of activities during his time at CJ, and is grateful for the guidance and coursework that instilled the confidence to succeed. But, the most profound experience of his high school years, he said, was participating in a Kairos retreat. “I’d never really been that connected with my faith,” he explained, “But I had a really good small group leader who helped me feel comfortable with being myself, forgive others who have hurt me, and connect my faith to my daily life.” As a Kairos leader himself, Cotton was then able to share the experience with others. “It was a lot of hard work creating

Lehman grad discerning call to priesthood By Eileen Connelly, OSU His faith and vocation were first nurtured at home, then at Lehman Catholic High School in Sidney, said recent graduate Elias Beezy. One of 11 children, he recalls attending daily Mass with his mother, Bree, and developing an early affinity for priestly ministry. While he was home-schooled as a child, both he and his parents were drawn to the sense of community at Lehman, along with the available extracurricular activities. Whether he was participating in the band, cross country, the Pro-Life Club, or debate team, Beezy said he appreciated the opportunity to “build my character and my leadership skills.” The variety of community service activities at both Lehman and his parish (Holy Angels) gave Beezy the chance to “grow in my faith in such a way that I realized that it’s not just how it impacts you as an individual, but the whole community.”

“I’ve been discerning the priesthood over the past few years,” he explained. “Participating in the Mass, the sacraments and adoration at Lehman have helped me grow in my understanding and love of the vocation of the priest. I’ve always tried to be a role model for my peers and show my love for the Church, how it has true meaning and true life behind it, and can make a difference.” “Elias and I have had many discussions about vocation and prayer,” said Father Peter Langenkamp, school chaplain. “He has a deep faith, a generous heart, and a zeal for Christ and His Church. These are the sort of qualities the Church needs, not only from young men discerning the priesthood, but from all young Catholic men and women. More than a worldly success that soon passes, love of the Lord and His Church and virtue are the real fruits of a Catholic education.” Beezy will continue to discern his call to the priesthood at Bishop Simon Brute College Seminary.

Seton grad grows as leader in faith By Eileen Connelly, OSU Preparing to graduate from St. Antoninus School four years ago, Liz Rolfe’s main criteria as she continued her education was that “it had to be a Catholic high school, no matter what.” “My family is completely rooted in our faith, and I knew keeping my faith strong would be important as I moved forward with school and life in general,” she explained. Rolfe’s older sister, Sarah, is a 2016 graduate of Seton High School, which also contributed to her decision. While she felt at home at Seton right away, Rolfes admits to struggling with her selfconfidence during her freshman year, as she faced a new environment and change in her group of friends. “Before long, I realized that I couldn’t go through it alone, that I really needed to lean on God,” she said. “I slowly began to feel more at ease with things, and as I built up my faith and self-love, I was able to share that faith and love with others.” Her involvement in campus ministry, as a member of Saints for Life (the school’s Pro-Life club), service as a chaplain for student government and retreat leader enabled Rolfes to do just that. “I think I’m more prepared for the future than I ever have been,” said Rolfes, who plans to attend the University of Cincinnati and possibly pursue a degree in counseling. “My time at Seton helped me be independent, taught me how to put my faith into action as a leader and build

other people up.” “Liz has always been a very genuine, humble, and hard-working student,” said Jan Linz, Seton’s campus ministry coordinator. “Over the past four years,

her leadership skills have soared. Liz works continuously on her relationship with God. As a chaplain in campus ministry this year, she was a positive role model and mentor to her peers and the

underclassmen. I think St. Elizabeth Ann Seton would be as proud as I am that she’s the recipient of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award for the Class of 2019.”

Summit grad advocates for mental health issues By Eileen Connelly, OSU Nick Nazzaro used his faith and personal experience to touch the lives of other students during his time at The Summit Country Day School. Nazzaro, who hails from All Saints Parish, came to Summit at the encouragement of select baseball teammates. Over the course of his high school years, he admits that “I felt like I saw the lowest of lows and went through a lot of hardship while trying to maintain the rigorous academic schedule, as well as baseball. I think during my senior year, I realized all that pain and struggle wasn’t just about mental illness. It was about how coping with problems is just a story of life as a whole.” His battle with depression and anxiety led Nazzaro to become an outspoken advocate for bringing mental health issues into the open and he developed a strong desire to help others coping with the same issues. Earlier this year, Upper School Counselor Mike Fee conducted a question and answer session with Nazzaro at an assembly for grades nine through 11, during which the young man encouraged his fellow students to ask for help. “What I really admire about Nick is that once he figured

out this is part of who he is, he owned it and wanted to find solutions,” Fee said. “When he shared his struggles, the younger kids were able to see this young guy who seemingly has it all together. He’s well liked, was a good student and athlete. Because he was able to seek help, I think it left them more open to finding someone they can connect with in a time of need. I’m very proud of Nick.” Sharing his experience was helpful for Nazzaro, as well. “It helped me to understand I’m not the only one going through my situation and that there are countless people experiencing a similar scenario,” he said. Also significant was serving as a Kairos leader last November, Nazzaro added. “That was the moment where it went from me needing help, to now me being able to directly help others. That has to be one of the most meaningful times in my whole life. The Summit really emphasizes one’s spiritual journey. I think that, along with the great leaders that are there (students, teachers, etc.), helped me direct myself towards a more faith-driven future.” For now, the future is at the University of Cincinnati. Nazzaro is undecided on a major, but is considering psychology.

St. Xavier experience inspires grad to teach By Eileen Connelly, OSU As he began his high school quest, Daniel Freeman was grateful that his parents didn’t apply any pressure regarding his choice. “My parents both attended public high schools, and said the decision was up to me,” he said. Freeman, who attended St. Ignatius Loyola in Monfort Heights for grade school, chose St. Xavier after shadowing there. “I liked the sense of community and the fact that everyone is involved,” he explained. And become involved Freeman did. During his time at St. X, he performed in musicals with Mercy McAuley Theatre, was on the school’s bowling team, took part in the sports broadcasting and fishing clubs, and participated in the liturgical music group. Amid all his activities, Freeman said the most personally and spiritual meaningful experience was leading two retreats for sophomores, along with his classmates. The first, a camping retreat, focused on

being fishers of men, while the second was centered on a commitment to justice. “I was impressed with how much the guys in my small groups opened up about their Catholic faith, about things they were questioning or struggling with,” Freeman said. “It made me realize how important it is to talk about these things and really strengthened my own faith and relationship with God.” “Dan is great kid,” said Becky Schulte, director of communications and marketing at St. X. “He’s very energetic and charismatic.” Freeman will be attending the University of Cincinnati in the fall, and plans to major in English. His hope is to become an educator and to eventually return to teach at the place that had such an incredible impact on his life. “I’ve always known that I want to teach, and I’d love for it to be at St. X,” he said. “The teachers there care about the students so much and I want to someday have the effect on my students that my teachers had on me.”

Grad found faith, community at Fenwick By Eileen Connelly, OSU Community spirit, inclusivity, and an atmosphere of faith. That’s what recent graduate Lauren Falk found at Bishop Fenwick High School. “I really felt like God called me there,” said Falk, whose younger sister, Anna, is a current junior at Fenwick. Falk went to public school early on, and while she received religious education at St. Susanna Parish in Mason, she said it wasn’t until she arrived at Fenwick that “I really understood what my faith means in my life.” During her time at Fenwick, Falk was involved with the Key Club, campus ministry and was a Kairos retreat leader. Through service to others, whether making cards for nursing home resi-dents or distributing Bibles at Hope House Mission in Middletown, she was reminded of our call to “give others hope and the knowledge of God’s love.” “I can definitely say Kairos deepened my faith,” Falk added. “It was the most powerful experience of becoming closer to my classmates and our school community. High school seems like a time when young people begin to question their faith and experience things that might challenge it. I think being at Fenwick gave me a foundation of knowledge and faith that will give me something to always fall back on.” “Lauren makes her commitment to excellence look easy,” said Jason Umberg, assistant principal at Fenwick. “Behind the scenes, she is a well-rounded young woman with strong faith, strong moral and ethical character, great work ethic, and full of compassion for those around her.” Falk will be attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall, where she’ll study aerospace engineering. “I hope to be able to connect my passion for space with my faith,” she explained. “God gave us the earth, but also the universe. It’s intriguing and beautiful. I’d love to be able to build something that goes to Mars.” TheCatholicTelegraph.com

St. Ursula grad feels well prepared for future By Eileen Connelly, OSU From the blog she wrote for prospective students on the St. Ursula Academy (SUA) admissions site to the religion classes that helped deepen her faith, Celia Nusekabel left her mark at her alma mater and feels well prepared for the future. Nusekabel, who attended grade school at St. Aloysius Gonzaga in Bridgetown, said she “really didn’t consider anywhere else” for high school, largely due to older sister Grace’s positive experience at the Academy. “I followed in my sister’s footsteps and she helped me figure things out, but my path was a lot different.” She was selected as a Student Ambassador during freshman year and served in that role through-out her time at SUA. Nusekabel was also a member of Students for Advancement and club leader for Best Foot Forward (BFF), of which Lelia

Kramer, president of SUA, is moderator. “It’s basically a life skills club,” Nusekabel explained. “We had speakers come to discuss different topics, such as self-defense or changing a tire. I loved being able to work with Mrs. Kramer.” Responding to questions from younger students about high school life on her blog was also beneficial for Nusekabel. “I’m more of a math and science girl, so it really helped me develop my writing skills,” she explained. She’s especially grateful for the opportunity to grow in her faith. “In my junior and senior year, we had classes on morality and social justice. That really helped me apply my faith to my own life and realize what we do can impact our community and our world.” Nusekabel will attend Ohio State University in the fall and plans to study exercise science.

Moeller grad ‘on fire about faith’ By Eileen Connelly, OSU

Although he did shadow at another area Catholic high school, it was pretty much a given that Jack Shimrock would attend Archbishop Moeller, following in the footsteps of older brothers Tim and Colin. Shimrock, who went to St. Susanna School in Mason, was active in a variety of ways during his four years at Moeller, including taking part in peer ministry and theatre. But, he found the most meaning in opportunities to grow in his faith and in service to others. This includes going on Kairos and participation in LIFE (Living the Marianist Experience), a studentled, faith-sharing group. Like the sodalities created by Marianist founder William Joseph Chaminade, LIFE groups meet in Marianist schools throughout the world to continue the Marianist tradition. He also traveled to Ecuador for two-week immersion trip, volunteered at local retirement facility and assisted with Christmas on Campus with children from Corryville Catholic School. “Moeller gave me a roadmap for how I can improve my relationship with God,” Shimrock said. “I was strengthened on my faith journey again and again because of being in an environment where it’s cool to be Catholic.” He also credits the faculty for his meaningful experience at Moeller. “I have friends at public high schools who talk about their faculty members and it’s

just not the same. At Moeller, the teachers care. They really care. They want to do whatever they can to help and set you up for success.” “Jack’s just on fire about his journey of faith,” said Justin Claypool, an English teacher at Moeller. Kairos made a big impact on him. He’s a really nice guy who works well with students and adults.”

Shimrock is bound for Wright State University in the fall, where he plans to pursue a business-related degree. Thanks to his time at Moeller, Shimrock feels that he’s well prepared for college life. “For me, it was being treated like an adult by the teachers, the rigor of the academics and learning how to communicate effectively. I’ll be ahead of the game.”
