Terez D. Baskin PRAD 391 Small Project #1: Business Reception This business reception is for my non-‐profit girls mentorship program called G.E.M.S. (Girls Empowerment Movement for Success). The reception is honoring the hard work of our top mentors, board members, and donors from the summer. The reception is scheduled for mid-‐September from 6:30-‐8:30 on the rooftop lounge of the DePaul University Center on the 11th floor. The tables are smaller (48 inches) seat four people comfortably I played on the theme of GEMS and organized them in the shape of an diamond as well as decorated using vibrant jewel tones. It sort of has a Moroccan feel. There are lounge seats that span the entire parameter of the deck and by filling it with pillows and sheer dividers they make cozy lounge spaces for guest to sit and enjoy. I put the registration table nearest to the entrance so guests have to register prior to entering the deck. The coat check is opposite the door as to not cause traffic jams near the entrance. Our beverage serving station set diagonal from the entrance to give everyone and opportunity cross the room and mingle. My showcase area does not just include the table. I use the wall of glass and a perfect backdrop to hang pictures and project from the busy summer with the girls. On the table you see some projects they worked on with their mentors. I wanted to place it alongside the wall nearest to the beverage serving station so while you are waiting to be served you can see the fruit of their labor. Strike up a conversation with others while you wait. I believe the best part is the projections screen that will project onto
the wall above the serving stations. This way no one is blocking the video montage of the GEMS in action. Our problem is several of the serving staff has fallen ill and did not arrive to work at our venue. The caterer is ready with the food, but no one to serve it. Since we have several girls from the program coming as potential presenters they decide that they want to assist with serving as a service to those who have mentored and donated their time and money to them. Instead of this being a stuffy business reception it then become more intimate with the students helping out at their own event to add more value to the experience for the mentors, board members and donors. They rather enjoyed seeing the girls put in the effort to make their own event a success.
