Collages
We were assigned to do three collages. My first one is the collage of different buildings and houses which is my favorite. I had hard time finding pictures, because I don’t keep any magazines. If you look from far, it looks like one big photo. It also has a great composition
In my second collage I tried to use as much as many medias. The photos of Mongolian traditional tent and the photo of the shoes creates a big contrast. Used aluminum foil, oil pastel, post card and photos from magazine.
I had lot of fun doing this, and it was a quite challenge for me. I wish had more words to fill the open spaces. The color and the composition is pretty welcoming and girly.

S.W.O.T Analysis:
Collages were great introduction to design studio class. It helped students get to know each other. The collages of words worked really well to identify the “main” in design.
STRENGTH: Creating composition. In my first collage I made a lot thinking about where to put the pieces in order to match its color and shape. Working with different medias. I understood why the broad content is important, because when I was doing my first collage I collected all the building photos from magazine and put them together, but in my second collage I did not have topic, so I just randomly put strange photos together WEAKNESS: Finding pictures. As I stated before I don’t keep any physical magazines or newspaper, so I had a hard time finding them. OPPORTUNITY: I had opportunity to understand it is fine if you screwed. THREAT: Leaving assignments to be done at last minute
“What is your sign?”
SIGN GENERATION: ITERATION 1 I looked for material at home that I can do my sign, and I found metal string. I thought a lot what I can do, and intended to make a flower. I painted yellow to give an idea of dandelion, but it didn’t work quite well. I love the shade it creates.
After critique in class Jerry recommended me to add sweetness and warmth into my design, because metal string is cold, and it contradicts to my childhood memory of dandelion
SIGN GENERATION: ITERATION 2 My second iteration is more obvious than first. I did research how to make flower, but it still does not look like dandelion.

S.W.O.T Analysis:
For me this project was quite a challenge. Usually signs represent something, but mine did not work well. My last sign transformed a lot from my first.
STRENGTH: Working with different materials. Improving design process after critique in class. WEAKNESS: Considering material to design since every material has its own quality. Having trouble to choose appropriate material. OPPORTUNITY: Connect intentions with reality
THREAT: Working without planning
Golden Gate Park
A Journey of Discovery
I am a big fan of Greek and Roman architecture. Revokes the sense of history. It reminds me Pantheon. Symmetry, rhythm and repetition. At my first sight, I thought this half dome is for the marriage; surprisingly, It is a stage.
From the top floor of De Young museum. I was able to see the view of Golden Gate Park. This floor has 360 degree view. The light and shadow displayed really well. The reflection of the front wall to the window of the left wall looks tremendous. The circular holes prevent direct sunlight. The great use of reflective materials.
Japanese tea garden provokes the sense of nostalgia. I could feel the building is quite old by seeing the stains on the wood.

S.W.O.T Analysis:
A Journey of Wonder led me to Golden Gate Park where I always wanted to go. I had great Sunday with my roommate exploring through park. We had walked for 4 hours, but it is worth. Also I really enjoyed taking photos.
STRENGTH: Taking photos considering design principles, and enjoying sunny day :D WEAKNESS: Didn’t have enough time to see every corner of the park OPPORTUNITY: Paying attention on design principles in the future which is everywhere THREAT: I was chatting with my friend. Little bit distracted
Wall of Wonder
Reflection:
S.W.O.T Analysis:
My first iteration of Wall of Wonder is Sketch Up model. I intended to create bull eye to take attention, and the pixilation. I remembered Jerry talking random holes on the wall don’t make sense from close, but illustrates image of Marilyn Monroe from distance. I also tried to add Hide and Reveal into my design. This wall is huge so that may work to hide from sun.
STRENGTH: Successfully created eye shape that takes attention into the center of the wall. Dramatic shadow from the wall through holes WEAKNESS: Took a long time to “Push and Pull” these holes on Sketch Up. The wall does not have any function OPPORTUNITY: Doing more complex wall that I can tell story THREAT: Time management
Rough sketch of my straw wall, and the final design
From the perspective of Chopkin
Reflection:
S.W.O.T Analysis:
I had great time doing this wall. This is a maze. I drew rough sketch to start, but I didn’t consider diameter of straws; as a result the final model looks different. My intention is to give an idea of wave. Mrs. Chopkin hides inside the maze and Mr. Chopkin have to find her making his decision along his pathway. The blue and red straws are taller and denser than yellow and green which is not welcoming. If I was Mr. Chopkin I would go to the brighter side of the maze, but choosing easy way is not always right. Hierarchy of the tallest straw also direct Chopking to the green side. So Mr. Chopkin has to be brave and walk along the intense pathway to her.
STRENGTH: Started coming up with story, and connecting my design. Working with glue gun. I didn’t know that what I am capable of doing. WEAKNESS: It is obvious that I made the maze by straws. Next time I will paint them in one color OPPORTUNITY: Write more interesting story
THREAT: Time management. I made whole mess around my room
Wall of Wonder: Parallelism
Right and left view of parallel wall
Tried different effect on my photo to emphasize shadow
Reflection:
S.W.O.T Analysis:
This wall was not intended to be vertical from first, but during design process I decided to change, because vertical parallel walls were creating great space and floors. Again Chopkins are trying to catch each other. The parallel walls create dramatic shadows
STRENGTH: Able to create complex spaces. Simplicity lead to complexity. WEAKNESS: All walls should have been straight, but some of mine bended OPPORTUNITY: Work with different sized rectangular THREAT: I was able to see glue, looks messy
Story board
Reflection:
S.W.O.T Analysis:
Had great working on Sketch Up Sandbox. Mysterious event in Genes life waking up in north pole. He had penguin following him and walking hundreds of miles. Suddenly, he finds a stair to underground world.
STRENGTH: Contrast between nature and man-made WEAKNESS: Not quite related to my wall OPPORTUNITY: Make a connection with my walls THREAT: Took a long time to finish Sandbox
