3

Dog house Prospective view of Dog house which was the first assignment in our class. It was a great experience.

4

During class we started practicing hand sketching. My first try was not quite good, and Jerry recommended us to draw vertical and horizontal straight lines, and also circles at home.

5

Then I practiced at home connecting dots, drawing vertical and horizontal lines, and also practiced drawing circles between those lines.

6

7

These are the steps that I went through to get the final design of my dog house

8

Strengths:  Learned how to work with Push and Pull tool to make the roof, window, and door which was pretty easy and fun  Window and door design  Coloring the house using paint Bucket tool  Using offset to create window frame, and really enjoyed doing frame to the window, looks really neat Challenges and weaknesses:  I am not really comfortable with using Move tool. I learned that I should select whole thing first and then move the item. Otherwise the shape distorts.  It was a big challenge for me to add measurements, because I have no idea about feet and inches 9

Strengths:

 Successfully created cube, transformed into components, an replicated multiple times to create this complex arrays.  Zoomed into the array, turned my shadows on, and place several human figures for scale to create a dramatic shot  Learned how to duplicate boxes  Learned how to add components, and made a “story”  Successfully added shadow, and it turned more realistic  Used different camera view and leaned how to export 2D picture Challenges:

 I need to learn how to use graphic visualization techniques to pen draw something similar to what I produce in SketchUp  I had some struggle using Orbit tool

11

Floor Study

12

Floor pattern research It was really fun and useful exercise. Usually it is hard to design something directly, but when I start drawing them, I can explore more ideas as I go further.

13

Perspective view of floor studies

14

Strengths:  Practiced a Move and Copy tool which I did not get in previous class  Mastered in Push and Pull tool to create the roof  Used Tape to draw repetitive pattern of the floor  Used Bucket tool to color my floor

Challenges:  Use Move and Copy tool  Move through right axis  Create new design  Take good shots

Weaknesses:  At first I did some mistake in my wall and copied that wrong model all over, so my whole houses looked weird  Had a hard time to take a good shot, because the patterns were disappearing when use my rotate tool  Had trouble to place Steve on the floor. His feet was keep disappearing  Had a trouble to move my copied version by red axis

Opportunities:  Practice the Move and Copy tool more. It seemed quite useful  Sketch the pattern on the paper to discover new ideas  Follow Jerry faster

15

Stair study and Follow me tool In class we learned how to do stairs using Line tool and Push Pull tool. Also introduced with Follow me tool. I totally lost from the beginning of the class, so I did stairs at home

16

17

Spiral stairs I really wanted to create spiral stairs which is my favorite. At first created a circle and divided into pieces. I used Offset tool to separate the pieces, and then shifted upwards

This is my favorite design of stairs. It has a great shape, and also I love the way it is bizarre. There is no ending or starting point.

18

Perspective view of hexagon tube on the stairs

Follow me is a great tool, but still can not figure out how can I use in my design. I created hexagon shaped tube, which is really hard to do by hand drawing. 19

Strengths:  Learned how to do stairs  Doing fine with Push and Pull tool

Weaknesses:  Totally lost  Could not use move tool to copy stairs  Left behind everybody  Had problem with Rotate tool  Problem with axis  Confused with Grouping my models

Challenges:  Work fast  Use of Rotate, Follow me, Push Pull and Move tools  Designing dramatic stairs  Use Follow me tool to create tube

Opportunities:  Learn how to create stairs from first step  Explore more design ideas  Practice Rotate tool

20

Shape study

21

We learned how to create shapes, and mix those shapes and create brand new figures. It was really fun of mixing shapes. I considered sustainability and colored my figures by vegetation and wood color.

This one remind me Giza Pyramid. I mixed cube and cone

This one is my favorite one. I mixed semi-sphere, cube and hexagon-based cone. This is really dramatic and complex.

I created this figure unintentionally, and I love it. The mixture of hexagon-based cone, cube and pyramid.

23

Strengths:  Created bunch of different kinds of shapes from one shape  Learned how to intersect faces  Mastered in Erase tool, and I found out that button E on keyboard is the shortcut to Erase tool  Use of Bucket tool  Designing different shapes  Mastered in follow me tool

Challenges:  Work fast  Use of Move, Tape and Scale tools  Intersect faces with model  Exploring new ideas

Weaknesses:  I was having trouble with moving shapes into one another. It was really hard to find the midpoint  I was working really slow  Practiced Scale tool a little, but did not understand how to use it  Struggling with Tape tool. Sometimes I could not see the indented lines

Opportunities:  Practice more the Move, Tape and Scale tools  Learn more shortcuts on keyboard in order to increase the speed

24

Wall study #1 In class we practice mixing shapes to create different types of walls. We had trouble to create floor, and Trinity taught us how to use Push and Pull tool pressing on Ctrl button. Class was slow today, but I am glad that I have an idea how to create these beautiful walls

25

26

Strengths:  Collided shapes and created dramatic wall  Mastered intersecting faces and erasing remedies  Learned how to use Push and Pull tool differently

Challenges:  Push and pull tool  Exploring new ideas  Intersecting models

Weaknesses:  I was trying to make interesting window on wall, but it did not work very well  It was hard to create new ideas

Opportunities:  Explore new ideas  Figure out how to create better floor and ceiling

27

Wall study #2 This is second day of practicing different types of wall. This time we mostly mused Push Pull and Move tool

28

These are the walls done by me. I used Push and Pull tool mostly. I love Greek and Roman architecture, and I love this wall which looks like collided columns. The next wall is really geometric which looks like more modern

29

30

Parthenon

At class I was totally inspired with the Greek and Roman styled wall, and at home I did roofless Parthenon. It took a lot of time, but I it was great practice and great experience. 31

Strengths:  Learned how simplicity can lead to complexity  Introduced with Rotate tool  Practiced how to rotate and copy at the same time  Learned how to do the stairs at the end of the class  Understood how to use Follow me tool  Learned how to use Offset tool  Learned how to use Arch tool Weaknesses:  Had trouble with stairs first  Good 2D shots

Challenges:  Work fast  Use of Rotate, Arch, Offset and Line tools  Practice stairs using Line and Follow me tools  Create complex shapes

Opportunities:  Practice Follow me tool  To work fast I need to know the shortcuts of the tools on the keyboard

35

Malevich inspired construction and Picasso inspired tower

In class we worked on Malevich inspired construction which was quite fun, but in fact that I did not merge the trees in one layer, I had trouble with using software. It was keep crushing because of my acres of forest, and I started my new tower at home

This is Picasso inspired tower that I did at home. It was a lot of fun

36

37

Strengths:  Had a lot fun  Mastered in Line tool, and finally understood what Jerry meant by “retracing”  Learned how to import photo  Used Bucket tool to color my buildings  Played with different shapes  More practice on Push and Pull tool  X-ray view is mind-blowing and useful Weaknesses:  Had a hard time with putting my pieces in Group  It was really hard to choose ground color. It turned really bright and really dark sometimes  Combination of colors  Learned how to make an animation, but was not as good as expected  Had some trouble working with Two Point Arch

Challenges:  Using Line tool to retrace the shape  Using Arch tool to create waive  Color up the tower  Designing even more complicated shape using Push and Pool tool  Grouping the shapes

Opportunities:  Work with X-ray tool to find out what is behind and inside  Practice more the Arch tool  Be careful with colors. I will use water bucket next time instead of coloring them blue  Understand the “grouping” 38

Paper airplanes It was really an interesting class. We learned how to fold a paper airplane on Sketch Up. I experienced different Styles and I really liked the Genetic CAD style, which turns my airplanes black with white stroke. This tuned out to be really masculine, so I tried to make a story. I displayed fog, and also imported JPG images of war. This piece satisfies my a lot. Fog blinds my airplanes into the background image, and decreases the brightness.

39

We started our class by folding technique using Rotate tool. At first it was quite confusing, but after practicing few times, I understood how to use this tool. Seems fun, but looked like all of us were having a bad day :D , and then we moved to folding airplanes which was much more interesting

42

Strengths:  Experienced Rotate tool  Learned how to change the Style  Had fun a lot  Learned really fast  Taking good shots

Weaknesses:  Confused a little with rotation tool  Don’t know how to turn back to my first version

Challenges:  Fold the paper  Experience different styles

Opportunities:  More experience on rotation tool  Try different styles

43

Experiment with different styles

46

Strengths:  Mastered in Rotate tool  Did better animation  Put the previous parts in layer that I could let then disappear without deleting them

Challenges:  Folding roof  Create better animation  Discover the design of the pavilion

Weaknesses:  Later realized that I should have add all the columns in one layer, because it slowed down by software  Trees were driving me crazy. They were placing below the red axis, and looked awful in parallel projection.

Opportunities:  Work with layers  Discover my own style without copying directly from Jerry
