FESTIVAL SHOW PROGRAM TEAM KAT BIERKENS
Welcome to our wool and fiber arts festival When I went to my first fiber festival years and years ago I was amazed at all the vibrant colors and textures that I experienced there. The vendors were amazing and I knew I had landed in a community where I could to just hang out and absorb all the knowledge that was floating around. This Wool and Fiber Arts Show Program was designed to recreate the feeling of being at an event in person. Due to Covid-19 our lives have changed dramatically and our festivals are being canceled left and right. Our monthly online fiber festival sales have been a blessing to many and a joy to see develop. The facebook group "WAFA" was started back in April by our beloved founder Ellen from Zephyr Creek Farms. It has blossomed into more than just a facebook group to visit. It is now a community that leans on each other and provides an outlet for our craft and to share the love of fiber and the process of transforming it. I hope you enjoy the virtual walk through of our wool and fiber arts festival and are able to join us on the last weeked of each month for our "Live" sales event.

OCTOBER 2020
Interview With
TeDi Jansen
What got you started in the Fiber Arts World? When we moved to our current farm 11 years ago, we had horses and dogs. I really wanted farm animals and started talking about getting some sheep. My partner said she could use a pair of hand-knit socks, and that spring, we were on the road to pick up our first sheep. Shortly after the sheep arrived, my mother gave me her Ashford Traditional spinning wheel. I taught myself to spin with our Navajo Churro wool, not the perfect fiber for socks, but a wonderful fiber to learn on. After a few years, I added Bluefaced Leicesters and CVMs to the flock and we now have a small spinner’s herd with a little bit of everything. Fiber Art was a hobby for me until 6 years ago when I lost my job as a Human Resources director. I decided it was a sign and that I should make the farm my career. Now, I get to spin, weave, dye, make goat milk soap, and teach those things. I can’t wait to go to work everyday! What inspires you? The sheep inspire me! Right now, my herd is so tiny that each one is like a special friend. I often take my spinning wheel out and spin in the pasture with my little band. They whisper to me about yarns and colors and weaving projects. I am a photographer as well as fiber artist and I love to take photos of our farm. The colors and textures inspire me and I will often use a photo as the jumping-off point for a yarn or weaving.

OCTOBER 2020
What suggestions would you make for someone who wants to start dying with natural dyes? I would tell them to be curious and adventurous. Start with something that isn’t too complicated and go from there. Be patient and give the project time. I used to be quite impatient and wanted quick results from the dye pot, but have since learned that these things take time. Some of my best colors have come from a pot I put aside and forgot about for a week, only to discover the deepest maroon or gold when I remembered that it was patiently waiting for me. Lastly, be open to surprises because botanical dyeing is an adventure like nature itself. You can duplicate the recipe and all your steps and sometimes the color will still surprise you. Sometimes you get interrupted after you put the first skein in the pot and all the rest of the skeins are different and beautiful! There are life lessons in every dye session. I have a wonderful dye mentor who told me that botanical dyeing is just like brewing a wonderful cup of tea. I think about that every time I start the process.

WOOL AND FIBER ARTS
What is your favorite fiber to dye? I love dyeing silk. It soaks up the dye and the colors are so brilliant. I will often toss a handful of silk cocoons in a pot that is mostly exhausted to soak up the last bit of color. I also love experimenting with different fibers and natural dyes. Three different fibers -even three different types of wool- can give three very different results. - 14 -
OCTOBER 2020
Do you find yourself gravitating towards certain colors? I must admit that my favorite “color” is grey. I swoon at a rose grey alpaca fleece and have a gradient grey lamb fleece from this year’s shearing that is like a dream! I’m pretty sure one of the reasons I love grey is the way it sets off all the other colors. It’s also tricky to create with natural dyestuffs, an elusive challenge I haven’t mastered. After grey, it’s green for me: hunter, olive, emerald… Green is another elusive natural dye color. You’d think that all those green plants would give green, but no, most of them give yellow. Do you have any future projects that you would like to pursue? Hmm… I have been working on a weaving project for about a year now that I call ‘Tools of the Trades’. I’ve been weaving tools. Pre-pandemic, I went antiquing for old tools I could warp and weave. I’ve completed a couple of saws and am slowly working an intricate egg basket. I have several other tools and machinery pieces that will be added to the collection eventually. For years I have wanted to create bags and other household goods like pillows with my weavings. Unfortunately, my sewing skills don’t extend beyond getting the machine out of the closet, so it’s still a dream. Has WAFA had an impact on your business? If so, how? Where to begin?! At first, I saw it as an opportunity to replace the fiber shows that had been cancelled, but it has become so much more. I just love this community! I don’t know many other shepherdesses, and opening up the group page to regularly see photos and goods from other shepherdesses making their way is such a gift. One of the things I miss most in these times is teaching. I had just built a very busy summer schedule of classes on the farm when we went into lockdown and everything was cancelled. It has been such fun to do live videos during the “teach me” weeks. I am so much more comfortable with technology and being in front of the camera. It has definitely upped my social media game. I even joined TikTok! I also feel like I have a better understanding of my customers. Unlike fiber shows, I have had an opportunity to really connect with some of the folks who come to our events. It makes my day when one of those names pops up in my messenger box. I love having those consistent conversations- so much more than booth chitchat. It has helped me to see my business in a much more dynamic way. WOOL AND FIBER ARTS

WELCOME TO TIMBER AND TWINE, THE FIBER BRAND OF SMALL ACRE FARM. OUR GOODS ARE SIMPLE AND ELEGANT, CREATED IN TRADITIONAL WAYS, WITH ANIMAL FIBERS AND PLANTS AS OUR FOUNDATIONAL MATERIALS. RETURN TO A SIMPLER, HONEST TIME. Timber and Twine is a collaboration between a shepherdess and a woodworker. Here you will find a collection of handmade pieces created on our little farm in the beautiful foothills of northern Colorado. Enjoying and understanding the slow, meaningful process of handmade is really what Timber and Twine is all about. Our collective wonder of natural materials, fiber, wood, plants brings a special perspective to our work. What we create is not fast or many but contemplative and honest. When I sit in the pasture, the sheep speak to me of textures, colors and spinning techniques. When I watch my partner caress a piece of wood, contemplating the finished spindle, comb or swift, it is the same. Our life is simple and good.

I invented My Two Ladies™ out of pure frustration. There had to be a better way to knit this big and bulky blanket. It was exhausting and very time consuming, with either straight or circular needles. While at the studio, an idea popped into my head.
Alexis Mantione, Creator/Owner
Creator/OwnerMy Two Ladies™. It’s more than a knitting needle. It’s more than a name. It’s a tribute to knitting and the close knit fiber arts community. It's not just yarn and stitches, but so much more.
I grabbed some knitting tools and supplies, made some modifications, and started knitting quickly and effortlessly. "How is it no one ever thought of this?”.
Knitting gave me the opportunity to be part of an indescribable bond between a creative fiber folks of varying age, ethnic and social backgrounds, whom would probably have never met otherwise.
Well I thought of it, I patented it, I manufactured it ….. and almost a year later….. My Two Ladies™ Adjustable Straight Knitting Needle System became available for all to enjoy. They are beautiful, functional and a pleasure to work with. I hope My Two Ladies™ bring as much joy to you as it has to me.
Our joy of creating, brings us together and creates a feeling of belonging. I wish everyone be part of a community such as ours.

Bags by K.C. Kostelaz Creations Can you ever have enough bags? Bags by KC is a small home-run business in the Pacific Northwest that grew from a desire for an attractive, quality bag that wouldn't "break the bank". Handcrafted bags are made with high quality fabrics and materials to contain all of your projects and fiber goodies! They are fully lined and have boxed corners for ease of use. I use twill tape drawstrings for durability and "grip" (your bag will not come open unless you open it!). My bags come in a variety of sizes tailored with the fiber artist in mind. When you shop with Bags by Kostelaz Creations you will find fabrics and patterns that run the gamut from whimsical animal prints to fantasy, garden and sea themes to designs that tickled my fancy and hopefully yours as well! Custom orders are always welcome! Purchases can be made in the comments of the Live! video, by private message, or email message. https://www.facebook.com/KostelazCreations https://www.instagram.com/kostelazcreations

Shaggy Bear Farms Shaggy Bear Farms is a small family farm in Scio, OR that strives to promote and preserve the rare, endangered and lesser-known fiber breeds inhabiting our planet. We currently raise 44 different breeds of fiber animals strictly for their fleeces and pride ourselves on being a source of “farm to needle” yarns and fiber for spinning. Ewe2me2u and how it all started.... I would like to introduce myself, My name is Mary,(some of you may know me as Josie). I am the owner of Ewe2me2u. For those of you who don't know me, I am a fiber artist who found my passion late in life. I have always loved sheep and alpaca and all fibers. After an injury and several back surgeries, I was forced to retire. So, with much soul searching I decided to follow my life long passion of the fiber arts. As the saying goes....Life gives you lemons? Make lemonade....So I decided to start Ewe2me2u. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made.
