Did you know Polypays are American made sheep!?! The breeders responsible for this prolific sheep used Finn for their ability to birth many lambs, early puberty and short gestation period. Dorset for their superior mothering ability, carcass quality, early puberty and long breeding season. Targhee for their larger body size, long breeding season and excellent fleece quality, and finally Rambouillet for their adaptability, hardiness, productivity and quality fleeces. Polypay was created from these breeds. The moms are fierce protectors, and they provide excellent milk supply for fast growing multiples! Some producers are able to raise 3 lamb crops in 2 years due to the prolific mothers.
Our family began raising Polypay sheep in 1998. My husband, The Shepherd, did his research on sheep that provide a good commercial crop & had excellent mothering abilities. Polypay kept coming to the top of his search. Even the name is perfect: Polypay = many/much $$.
Let’s talk wool! Did you notice the fabulous fiber breeds in the compilation? Each breed contributes a special feature that creates a unique opportunity for spinners. It’s soft like Rambo, Finn and Targhee It’s springy like Dorsett. It takes color so beautifully. It’s perfect for any project.

A few years ago a friend encouraged me to create combed top with our fleece for a breed study. Once the combed top came home from the mill, it became a favorite by far! Customers across the country have purchased and enjoyed spinning and working with our Polypay wool.

The first time I sent Polypay wool to a mill to be processed, I had roving and yarn created. I loved the results. I love spinning Polypay roving and weaving with colorful or natural Polypay yarn. It’s so bouncy and soft.
If you aren’t a fan already, you’ll be hooked the first time you try Polypay wool!
My Polypay fiber story didn’t start until 5 years ago, however. I only became interested in our sheep’s wool after admiring our beautiful brown natural colored Ramboulillet/Columbia crosses being sheared one day. After that the story is like many of your fiber stories… a rabbit hole that keeps growing.

I always love to learn how people got into fiber arts. For some, it starts with knitting or crocheting, then down the rabbit hole to spinning and dyeing, and maybe even all the way to fleece processing. For me, it happened the other way around I started off in 4 H at age 9 with showing project lambs, and then I wanted to expand into breeding sheep. We started raising our own project lambs when I was in middle school, and then I wanted to get into purebred stock. When I was in high school, I applied to the National Polypay Association because they were giving away a starter flock with an essay contest. I was so surprised when I got a letter that I won, and we have been raising Polypay sheep ever since

I have found that every breed has their own unique strengths. While it can be easy to get comfortable using only one, I encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and “leave no breed behind” in your fiber arts journey. The diversity of the world of wool is really fabulous to explore.
Polypays are wonderful mothers that often birth and raise multiples easily. They are multipurpose animals bred for a balance of maternal, meat, and wool characteristics. They combine a variety of good traits, being one quarter each of Targhee, Rambouillet, Finn Sheep, and Dorset. Raising Polypays led us to strive for sustainability on our farm because they are a breed that is useful for so many different things
When COVID hit, I was determined to learn how to process fleece and spin to continue my quest toward using everything that we had to work with on the farm. It had always been a dream of mine, and I finally had the time and bags of wool in the garage While Polypays are a lesser known breed, their fine textured wool is great to work with. It has a springy, fresh feel that was very forgiving for a beginning spinner. I have been able to take fleece from Polypays and make all kinds of beautiful spinning, weaving, and felting creations, as well as bring an understanding of sheep raising and fiber arts to our local community.

Harvest Hill Acres, located in the beautiful SOGN valley of south central Minnesota, is home to a purebred flock of CVM Romedale sheep. We also have llamas, angora rabbits, chickens, bees, barn cats and our golden retrievers who feel they own the place.
