Information for attendees

For three days, you will be able to observe birds and celebrate their migration. You will walk among extinct volcanoes and wetlands, camp near the ocean, learn about native plants, enjoy seafood, and you will have the opportunity to be part of a great celebration within the community. Go on an adventure at the Sudoeste volcano, let the view of the wetlands and the Pacific Ocean take your breath away, and enjoy the truly unique vegetation. This festival provides a space to disconnect from everyday urban life; a space to stop, breathe, and focus on what is happening NOW.

This festival is for you if: You are in love with the peninsula and you seek to discover the natural wonders that live in it. You want to spend three days surrounded by nature, among volcanoes, wetlands and delicious sea gastronomy. You are interested in the conservation of natural areas. You would like to witness the wonder that bird migration is as birds make their journey through the peninsula.

2

“The festival is for you if you are adventurous, robust and ready to live life close to nature and off grid, enjoy lots of open spaces and peace and quiet. The enchantments of life on the bay include: being surrounded by volcanoes, sunrises over the bay while fishing boats pass by, all the wonderful wildlife especially the many types of birds. And last but not least… the starry, starry nights and the moonlight on the bay”. Marcie Hall, San Quintín resident

Information for attendees 4th. San Quintín Bay Bird Festival 2018

Why is the San Quintín Bay special for the shorebirds? Baja California is the second largest peninsula in the world. The large biodiversity of endemic flora and fauna found here is due to the peninsula’s geographical location. In it, the wonderful duality of sea and desert are brought together, resulting in one of the greatest treasures we have: the San Quintín Bay. This region is considered an important stopover site in the Pacific Flyway since over 25,000 migratory shorebirds arrive to the bay each year either for reproduction purposes or to stay during the winter.

The San Quintín Bay is: Wetland of International Importance designated by the Ramsar Convention. Shorebird Reserve since 2008 and part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN). Important Bird Conservation Area in Mexico.

4

History of the festival The Bird Festivals were born in 2015 with the purpose of celebrating bird migration in winter in the San Quintín Bay. The festivals are also an opportunity for the community to learn about care and protection of birds and their habitats through educational and artistic activities. The three previous editions were held in one day. This fourth edition is the first time that the festival will be held in three days. The attendees will be able to choose different outdoors activities and learn about nature-related topics such as birds, archaeology, vegetation, wildlife, and marine life.

The festivals are also an opportunity for the community to learn about care and protection of birds and their habitats through educational and artistic activities.

Recommendations and general requirements San Quintín presents a Mediterranean climate. In winter, the maximum temperature is 20 Celsius degrees (68° F) and the minimum is 2 Celsius degrees (35° F). It’s important to check the weather conditions at https://weather.com/ There is limited public transportation service in San Quintín and there is no UBER service. Temperature can drop considerably at night: bring comfortable and light clothing, pants, long-sleeve shirts, jacket, winter hat, gloves, etc. A four-wheel drive is recommended due to road conditions since most of them aren’t paved. Bring a first-aid kit and personal basic medicines (for headaches, dizziness, allergies, etc.). It’s important to bring cash! Since not all restaurants accept card payments. In San Quintín there are ATMs of the following banks: HSBC, Citibanamex, Banjercito and BBVA Bancomer.

Considerations

The festival is developed under the principles of “Leave No Trace” which means it is an event of low environmental impact. More information here We aim to leave no trash at the bay, so it’s important not to throw away waste and to take with you the trash you produce. This festival is conceived under a mindfulness philosophy. This means that we promote birdwatching as a form of meditation. For safety, we will have an ambulance and the assistance of Grupo En-sar Búsqueda y Rescate de Ensenada, experts in risk situations and emergencies in remote areas.

You can bring your pets as long as they wear leash at all times since pets disturb birds.
