Carnival of Rethymno The first carnival in Rethymno was in 1914. On a long cart they put a huge mandolin with a length of 12 meters. Masks were the keys of the mandolin and the strings were white ropes with flowers around them. The Carnival throne was fixed to the cart, but from far away it seemed to be on the base of the Mandolin. The Carnival King was dressed in red and gold clothes.

THE CARNIVAL OF VENICE

The carnival of Venice began with a victory of the republic against the patriarch of that time in 1162. On the occasion of this victory, people began to dance and gather in the Square of Saint Mark. The festival started that period and became official in the Renaissance era. Today about 3.000.000 people come to Venice every year for the carnival.

THE VENETIAN MASKS

The first Venetian masks were decorated in a simple way and they often had symbolic and practical use. Today most masks are made with plaster and gold leaves and they are all painted by hand. They use real feathers and precious stones to decorate them.

CARNIVAL IN RIO DE JANEIRO

The first festival of Rio took place in 1723. The carnival in Rio De Janeiro is a festival that takes place every year and it is considered the biggest carnival in the world with 2 million people every day in the streets. It is celebrated in order to honor the gods and to show respect to the great waters. Floats, revelers, and adornments from various samba schools parade during the Rio carnival. There are about 200 samba schools which are divided into 5 leagues/divisions. Local neighbors who come from the same region, have a common background and want to attend the carnival together can form a samba school.

Every school has to follow a specific order with their parade entries. There are ten to fifteen people in every school. The people decide about the style and mood of their presentation. These people are dressed in fancy costumes and prepare dances that usually tell a story. After the commisao de frente follows the first float of the samba school, called abre – alas. Then come the Mestre – Sala and Porta – Bandeira - Master of ceremonies and flag Bearer in English - with one to four pairs that lead the dancers, which include the old guard veterans and the ala das baianas. Lastly, there is the bateria at the rear and sometimes guitars and a brass section.
