The Peace of Utrecht ended the War of the Spanish Succession, which started in 1701; Great Britain emerged as the winner. Queen Anne and Louis XIV signed the Treaty on April 11, 1713 and agreed on a division of North America that saw France give up Hudson Bay, Acadie and Newfoundland. Those conclusions were reached with the use of maps and reports by negotiators who had never seen these regions; however, their decisions would upset the lives of the populations and have a direct impact on the future of their communities.
