Welcome to the RockMan Challenge! Please use this booklet as a guide to help you get the most out of the your day. There are several maps along with a description of the entire course. We have included a schedule of events that shows the timing of the highlights for the day. If at anytime you have a question, or a concern we have more than 100 volunteers wearing bright red vests on the course. Ask any of them and they will gladly assist you. MISSION: The Watertown Challenge Association sponsors actions and social interactions to protect and enhance the quality of life and build a sense of community pride benefiting local citizens, businesses and the environment. This race should be a fun race with the competitive side coming from challenging yourself. It is not meant to be about first or last place but rather about supporting everyone around you while you challenge yourself to be at your best today. In that spirit, if you see someone in trouble, please help them out of harms way and forget about your time. Also, if you are fortunate enough to pass someone, offer them an encouraging word. If you are being passed, offer that person a kind word of encouragement. When you pass a volunteer, thank them for their time. Without them, this entire day would not happen. You are about to see a large portion of the City of Watertown by paddling right through the heart of the city. You’ll notice the parks and businesses mixed in with the houses and you will also see just how quickly the “country” starts surrounding this small community. Then you’ll see the glacial moraines and farms that make up Jefferson county. Coming back to town you’ll get to see the incredible property run by Bethesda. Spend some time in town this weekend and you will find hidden gems all around. This is truly one of Wisconsin’s classic river towns. After the race is completed and the celebrating is done we sincerely hope that you will look back at the day and think it was fun. Whether it is the obstacle course, paddling, biking, running, live band, chicken dinner, or simply knowing that you just helped support a selfless organization that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of the others. RACE DAY INSTRUCTIONS Give yourself at least 1 hour to distribute your gear
Distribute your gear (in this order) so you minimize time and travel. You will end with your vehicle in the correct parking spot! 1. Boat/Paddling equipment 2. Biking gear 3. Running gear PADDLING EQUIPMENT Drive to Christ United Methodist Church (CUMC) on the east side of Watertown (p. 6) and leave your canoe or kayak and related paddling gear in the staging area near the start. Helmets and PFD fully zipped and buckled are mandatory so leave these with your watercraft. Volunteers will be there to guide you and watch your equipment. Your support crew and fans can park ½ block to the north in the designated area. Park your vehicle at Bethesda Lutheran Communities in the Golisch Park lot (p. 12) after dropping off your running gear. A shuttle bus will take you from the Golisch park parking, back to CUMC for you to begin the challenge.
BIKING GEAR
Place your bike and any other shoes, clothing etc. you want for the bike leg at the Watertown Senior Center parking lot. (p. 7) It is a good idea to bring a bucket or something like that to place your gear in. You can decorate your bucket to make your spot easier to find. A bucket also makes a nice seat to use while changing shoes. You may also use a flag however there are hundreds of bikes and flags tend to not stand out. Bike racks will be available. Hook your bike seat over the horizontal bar of the rack. Bike helmets are mandatory. Please stay off your bike in the bike corral and use caution when entering and exiting.
RUNNING GEAR
Place your personal running gear next to the bike drop off at Bethesda Lutheran Communities (p. 8). Again, find a way to make your equipment stand out so it is easy to find. In the event of rain, your equipment will get wet. Please be prepared.
SHUTTLE TO START AREA
Shuttle service is provided by the RockMan Challenge to get you from Golisch Park (p. 6, no. 6) to the start line with stops at the run stage and bike stage for teams. Starting at 8 a.m. the shuttle will leave approximately every 15-20 minutes with the last one leaving when the last racer has been shuttled to the start line or 9:30 a.m.
FINISH LINE AREA
Parking is available adjacent to the obstacle course in the grass field (p. 12, no. 5). We encourage people who are observing to walk onto the designated areas by the obstacle course and enjoy the other free things to do in that area. Please, please ask them to limit driving around the Bethesda Campus so you do not breathe their tailpipes or have to avoid cars. A massage therapist will be available at the finish line. This is provided free of charge on a first-come first-served basis by Facilitated Healing. Free will donations are encouraged for this service.
AWARDS/PICNIC
The meal will be served from 12:15-2:30 p.m. at Golisch Park. The awards ceremony will start at 2 p.m. near the finish line. Your dinner ticket and any extras you may have purchased will be handed out upon check-in. Tickets for family, friends, etc. can be purchased at Golisch Park in the picnic area until they are sold out. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged. Music and celebration will continue until 7 p.m.
LOST & FOUND
Lost/Found items can be claimed at Golisch Park beginning at 3 p.m. We will not mail out any items left. You will need to make arrangements for pick up if you do not retrieve them on Sept. 28. If you find something , please give it to a volunteer so we can find the owner.

IT MATTERS TO US, PLEASE HELP!
One of our goal is to make this event as sustainable as possible. We use this goal as a baseline for all our actions.
In 2011 we planted a native prairie including 1200 plugs and more than 100 shrubs. This area is starting to take shape and the plants are taking over. Planting all these plants was a labor of love for volunteers. On a 90 plus degree day, a large group of volunteers showed up and planted the entire area. Following this, all summer caretakers made sure the plants received water (through a significant drought). The native landscape of Wisconsin is making a comeback right on the grounds thanks to volunteers and Bethesda’s willingness to give it a shot. To follow that we planted more than 1000 oak trees consisting of Swamp, Black, Pin, Red and White mainly on the Bethesda property. We did this to not only offset the impacts of this event but also to begin the process of creating an oak woods along the Rock River. All of us do everything we can to make sure if we can do something positive it gets done. Showing that actions are louder than words we recycled the pavilion that fell down at Golisch Park to keep it from a landfill. We also salvaged more than 10 gallons of paint from entering the landfill and used them to seal our docks. It is hard to explain but this group has taken small and large actions lighten our footprint. Today we are asking you to help us keep our footprint down. Please make sure that everything that can be recycled gets into a recycling bin. Watertown has an aggressive recycling program that we support. Every piece of paper and Styrofoam is recyclable. Simply use a trash can to scrape and food away then place to container in the blue bins. Also, every plastic bottle with any number on it. Of course cans and glass too. If you think an item may be recycled, you are probably correct. Still have questions, ask a volunteer to help out. So please remember to help us out today and recycle as much as possible. If you would like, take a look at the Prairie and all the small oaks that have started growing. We are committed to making this a sustainable event so we can do it year after year after year.

OBSTACLE COURSE 1. Tire Run
Simply touch your toe on the ground inside of each of 24 tires.
2. Belly Crawl
You move forward under the wire on your belly to the end of the obstacle.
3. Back Crawl
You move under the rope on your back while raising the rope when necessary with your hands to clear your body.
4. Monkey Bars
Raise yourself up and swing from one to the next. Get to the end and avoid dropping into the pit if you want fast time.
5. Six Vaults
10
These vaults are too high to hurdle so you vault over the logs using one or both hands. Six in a row and you must go over each one. Take your time and get the rhythm and six are done faster than you think.
6. Teeter-totter
You must walk up one side and get to the apex. Now delicately continue forward until the board reverses direction so you can get back to the ground.
7. Island Hopper
Jump from one log to another until the obstacle is negotiated. Miss, skip, fall off, or touch the ground and you must start over.

8. Easy Balancer
You walk up one inclined log and down the one on the other side to the ground. You are not allowed to run and you must go up to the top and down to the bottom on the other side.
9. Inclining Wall
This is a 6-foot wall that is inverted. You must get yourself over the wall by both pressing and vaulting over or using the gaps in the wall as steps to get to the top. How you choose to get back to the ground, your choice, but the smart one will land on their feet.
10. Rope Swing
Grab the rope, lift your legs, and swing past the line. Simple, yet tough.
11. Cargo Net
Get on top of the net and find your way to the other side. It is up and down hill and is not very easy.
12. Bag Hop
Here it is, no way around it. Get back to third grade and grab a special Berres Brothers Coffee bean bag and start going to the finish. Hop, baby steps, you choose but you must keep the bag above your knees. If it goes below, the military will demand you start over. Fall over, roll that is fine but you must keep that sack to your knees. 50 yards, one-half of a football field, nothing to it!
