INTERVIEW with

Dr. Beverly W. hogan tougaloo college’s first woman president! Dr. Hogan took the time out of her busy schedule to do an interview with Jackson Expose’ Magazine!

Jackson Expose’: Dr. Hogan, where did you grow up and where did you attend college and graduate school?

the Humanities from Benedict College, Rust College, Wiley College and Brown University.

Dr. Hogan: I grew up in a small community called Mt. Wade, located near Terry and Crystal Springs, MS. It is a community that was made up of the families of both of my parents. I grew up within a caring, secure and supportive environment with high expectations that we would indeed become educated citizens but more importantly, good people who would demonstrate self-respect, respect for others, integrity, and a love for God and community.

Jackson Expose’: What were your career aspirations when growing up??

Dr. Hogan: I always wanted to work with people. I do not think I had a defined profession in mind. My interests seem to focus on health care. I loved the natural sciences and social sciences. I grew up watching my parents and grandmother help others in our community, so service was an important part of my life’s work. I studied nursing and psychology and became focused on the field of mental I received my Bachelor’s Degree in health after spending a summer practiPsychology from Tougaloo College, a cum experience at Tuskegee University Master’s Degree in Public Policy and working with psychiatric patients. I Administration from Jackson State wanted to become a clinical psycholoUniversity and Doctoral study at gist and work with adolescents. After Fielding Graduate University in Human graduating from Tougaloo, I began and Organizational Development. a mental health administrator, organizing a rape crisis center, a shelter for battered women, and Mississippi’s first psychiatric halfway house, a path of leadership I have continued since 1974, becoming a government official appointed to lead a large state agency as a commissioner, a college administrator and now college president. So it would appear that my calling – my life’s work ¬ is leadership and public service. Jackson Expose’: What were some of the positions you held prior to your position as President of Tougaloo College? Dr. Hogan: Some of my positions were: Mental Health Therapist; Executive Director of the Hinds County Mental Health Association; Executive Director of the Mississippi Mental Health Association; Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Federal State Programs; Commissioner for the Workers’ Compensation Commission; Tougaloo College Board of Trustee; Director of the Owens Health and Wellness Center at Tougaloo College; Vice President for the Office of Institutional Advancement at Tougaloo College, and the Interim President of Tougaloo College. Jackson Expose’: How long have you been President of Tougaloo and what have been some of your most memorable moments? Dr. Hogan: I have been president for eleven years. The memorable moments have been all of the commencements, the conferring of degrees on the men and women who I am confident will continue to change the world and the compelling knowing that I have a major role in creating the future. Others include my actual inauguration as the 13th president and the first woman to lead this historic institution; the completion of the restoration of Woodworth Chapel that has been central to our campus but symbolic of the social change in Mississippi

since it was the gathering place, if you will, for those who advocated for a more humane and just society and the construction of Bennie G. Thompson Academic and Civil Rights Center because this building characterizes the meaning – the fundamental purpose - of a Tougaloo education. Jackson Expose’: Tell us about some of the historical exhibits you have at Tougaloo? Dr. Hogan: We have had the Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow exhibit that tells the story of the Jewish refugees that fled Nazi Germany and found new homes at historically black colleges and universities, prominently featuring Tougaloo’s own Professor Ernst Borinski who contributed immensely to the building of more humane relationships between the black and white communities during the era of fierce segregation. Jackson Expose’: I noticed a lot of new construction on campus, can you tell us about that? Dr. Hogan: Our campus is undergoing a physical transformation. We have invested in new construction as referenced with the Thompson Academic and Civil Rights Research Center, the renovations of other campus facilities, landscaping and the restoration of the Mansion which is the original home of John Boddie, the owner of the plantation that preceded the College. We have also invested in technology upgrades with a campus-wide connectivity, wireless networks and smart classrooms to name a few. Jackson Expose’: What are some of the degrees you offer at Tougaloo College? Dr. Hogan The College offers Associate Degrees, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science. We will begin our first graduate degree programs in 2014, the master’s in teaching, followed by the master’s in child development. Jackson Expose’ Magazine

Continued from page 9

Jackson Expose’: Do you have an Exchange Program, how does that work? Dr. Hogan: We have a longstanding , almost fifty years, exchange program with Brown University. It is called the Brown Tougaloo Partnership. It involves faculty and student exchange and collaborative projects including research. Students from both institutions spend a semester at the partnering institution. There is also an early admit to medical school component ; students at Tougaloo are identified as early as their sophomore year for admission to Brown’s medical school and are placed on a track for appropriate course work and other direct study at Brown prior to entering medical school. The two institutions signed their partnership agreement on May 18, 1964, the 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. Jackson Expose’: Who are some of your most notable Tougaloo Graduates? Dr. Hogan: Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, Dr. Eugene Deloatch, Anne Moody, Angel S. Byrd, Reuben Anderson, Esq., Dr. Aaron Shirley, Dr. Hakeem M. Oluseyi, Dr. Joyce Ladner, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, and Aunjanue Ellis (honorary doctorate). Jackson Expose’: What is your vision for Tougaloo College for the next five years? Dr. Hogan: We will continue as a place of excellence, relevance and influence. We will develop a more diverse student population, including more international students and adults; develop international student exchange programs; offer more diverse curricula, integrating specialized knowledge areas into our core liberal arts curriculum to better provide our students with knowledge acquisition and knowledge application, include more continuing education opportunities and offer diversity in the way we deliver our education. We also want to secure resources for sustainment, thus we will work to grow our endowment, develop our land held for investment and strengthen our governance components. By: Terri Lynn

side from the Wedding of the Year between Yuri and Freddie, there was lots of excitement in Atlanta this weekend! I noticed when I arrived at my hotel that there were lots of people who seemed to be dressed quite strangely, I inqueired to the hotel clerk as to what was going on. He siad, ‘‘ oh yeah, we have the Dragon con convention going on here this weekend. There were all sorts of cartoon characters that seemed to have come to life! I saw all sorts of cartoon charactors and comic book characters walking the streets of Atlanta. There were SO many peole in the downtown area just walking around and having fun. I remember commenting that it felt like I was in New Ordeans. There were so many people to the point that the cars could barely drive down the street. Whenever the light signaled for pedestrians to cross, literaaly loads of people would attempt to cross the street at once. I had never seen anything like that in Atlanta. Needless to say, by the weekend, all of the hotels in the area had been booked!

Atlanta such as the SEC-ACC matchup and the Atlanta Football Classic . Also happeing in Atlanta over the Labor Day weekend was the Black Gay Pride Parade. Of course there are many other things to do in Atlanta on a regular basis. For example, you can visit the Coca Cola Musueum. The Acquarium is another popular tourist attraction in downtown Atlanta. It houses 120,000 animals, representing 500 species. The CNN building is another popular attraction. You will be given a 55 minute guided tour of the behind the scenes of the production and studios. The King Center honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, is also in downtown houston. This hsitorical site is open to the public Sunday-Saturday (Open 7 days a week) 9am - 5pm.
