INTERVIEW

WITH J. HARRIS-BROWN

ABOVE Principal J HarrisBrown sitting in her office at Boyd.

PRINCIPAL AT BOYD ELEMENTARY JE: Tell us about where you grew up and where you attended school. J. Harris-Brown: I grew up in Yazoo City, MS. I attended school at St. Francis Catholic School in Yazoo City, MS. I also attended MS Valley State University, Hinds Community College, and Jackson State University. JE: What motivated you to enter the education field? J. Harris-Brown: I had a great aunt who was an educator. I had the utmost respect for her knowledge, and her demeanour as an educator. We would visit with her, and I remember the best part of the visit 6

was being able to read and thumb through the many books that she had at her house. As a child and adult, I explored critical thinking and looking at situations through different lenses. I have always found learning to be interesting. I believe that everyone who remembers his own educational experience remembers teachers, not methods and techniques. The teacher is the executor of the educational situation. A teacher can make or break a child. In education, there are many times when there is only one correct answer, but when exploring teaching and learning from a critical point of view, I embrace the ways the mind

works, and the opportunity to respect differences. I have always taken the opportunity to learn new things. I believe that there are very few gifts greater than knowledge, learning, and education. JE: Did you start out as a teacher? J. Harris Brown: No, I did not start out as a teacher. I have many hats under my umbrella. I hold licensures in school administration, nursing and cosmetology. I began as an administrator with the State Personnel Board, then as an administrator with Children’s Rehabilitation Center (also with the state), and from there

as an administrator with the school district. J. E.: What do you find rewarding about being an elementary school principal? J. Harris-Brown: As an elementary school principal, the most rewarding attribute is the ability to positively touch the lives of young people. The ability to listen and find what they are thirsty for, and to be able to quench that thirst. Every day provides the opportunity to touch a life, and to be the difference. Education is leading individuals to what is best, and making what is best out of them. This is a charge that I take personally, as a principal. JE.: What are the challenges you face as a principal? J. Harris-Brown: Some of the challenges found at Boyd Elementary as a principal are the large number of students that we serve, and the large number of students with eligibility disability rulings.

JE: What do you think is special about Boyd Elementary? J. Harris-Brown: Boyd Elementary School is special because of the diversity of students that we serve. We don’t have all of the smartest, all of the wealthiest, all of the functional advanced, nor all of the resources. But we do have teachers that care, teach, and take care of our students. We have families whose total purpose is to provide love, safety, and educational measures to children. Boyd functions as a large family, where we take care of each other. JE: Tell us about some of your awards and accomplishments? J. Harris-Brown: There are numerous awards and accomplishments. To name a few, are SACS accreditation for several years, students’ academic growth with State scores for several years, the golden tie of excellence educational award, and so many other accomplishments

and recognitions. JE: What are some of the organizations you are affiliated with? J. Harris-Brown: 100 Black Women of Jackson, Alignment Jackson, MS School Board Association, Tougaloo College Advisory Council. JE: What is your vision for Boyd Elementary? J. Harris-Brown: Our motto is “Building Our Youth Daily”. At Boyd, my/our vision is to see students at Boyd Elementary School excel academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally, and to become an “A” school. We have smart students who try hard, and we have faculty and staff members that believe in our students

LASHAWN TRAYLOR

MASTER LIFE COACH Grants Interview With Jackson Expose’

JE: VOWS, I love the mnemonic, S- Victorious, Optimistic, Women, Soaring, how did you come up with it? Traylor: It was right after I decided to change the name of my non-profit organization. The name of the organization before I changed it was “Rise Above Katrina”. I started this organization one year after Hurricane Katrina in the year 2006. It started to experience an overflow of many women needing services so we decided to shift our program to fit the needs of women. The revamp of the name happened in 2010, VOWS victorious, optimistic, women, soaring. I believe if you decree and declare words over individuals it will begin to manifest in their lives. Our goal & vision is to see every woman become victorious having an optimistic view about themselves that 8

empowers them to soar high in life. JE: It seems that you were an empowered coach from the start. Were you coached prior to becoming a coach? Traylor: Yes, I am still under a mentor as I type LOL. I believe every life coach / mentor should be a student themselves. As a mentor/life coach we can pour out so much of ourselves into others that it’s very important to have something coming back inside so the process of receiving and giving can continue. I believe I will always have someone in which I can learn from because it’s important to have a teachable spirit. JE: Did you have to become certified?

Traylor: No, I didn’t, but it is very important that you seek training and have the proper information to be able to empower the lives of others. It is a very serious position one can hold and takes a selfless attitude. You must be a very positive, knowledgeable, dependable, balanced, understanding, patient, goal orientated, wise, outgoing, educated and assertive type of person to mentor others. You must be able to have a few accomplishments in your life and have mastered what you are trying to coach to others. When someone trusts you with their life you must do everything in your power to be adding and enhancing it. I heard this saying once. “Never leave someone’s life worst but leave it in better condition than which you found it.”

MENTEE One of LaShawn’s Mentees at a Luncheon with Ms. Traylor

JE: How did you start your mentoring program? Traylor: My mentorship program is a recap from the programs I had in place from my first organization. I revised a few things and added new components that I have learned from attending workshop, training programs, and my education. My mentor also inspires me with great resources to operate a successful mentorship program. JE: Coach Talk:”Every free meal, isn’t fervour and favour doesn’t always come with a price.” Do you give free meals that come with mentoring? Traylor: The mentorship program was free in the beginning. A year ago I was led to change it for a cost of $595.00. It includes all the materials and books needed to master the

mentorship program for 12 months. I realized that people don’t value free things but they will value something that has a price. I have been in the non-profit arena for almost 8 years and I have seen many organizations go broke helping those with a hand out mentality and no true change occurs. I believe in a hand up! People will invest in someone that will invest in themselves. I have women currently in the program that have invested into themselves by paying for the program. I know my program will not be a great fit for some but it will for many. Most people believe if something has been given to them without a cost that it represents favour. Sometimes the things we invest in can help us gain the worthy favour that we need to push us forward to our next great opportunity! JE: I’m amazed to see the wisdom that you share on your

Facebook Page (https://www. facebook.com/pages/VOWS-Victorious-Optimistic-Women-Soaring/110255229014064). Where is all of this daily wisdom coming from? Traylor: Most of my wisdom comes from a place of many hard lessons I had to experience in my life. A lot of people are seeking to have wisdom, but not many people stick around long enough to gain the wisdom from their lessons. JE: How can someone interested in being mentored contact you? Traylor: If someone is interested they can contact me at vowsoaringhigh@yahoo.com or lashawntraylor@ outlook.com. I will email them the information needed to be a part of the mentorship program. Blessings. 9

OWNER OF ZOE SALES & MARKETING Ms. Bell Talks With Jackson Expose’ JE: Joanne, can you tell Jackson Expose’ readers a little about what you do or what your company does?

JE: What do you think is the biggest reward businesses get from working with you?

Joanne: ZOE Sales and Marketing, Inc. is of course a sales and marketing company specializing in sales and marketing. We have a sales team to go out and promote and sell your products and services. We have a call team to make outbound calls, set appointments and more. We have a production team to create the commercial that will help bring life to your business. We offer professional voice overs and actors for commercials as well. We have a graphic designer to help create your logo design and business card layout and more. We are a fully functional sales and marketing company.

Joanne: I think the biggest reward our clients receive is seeing their ideas come to life on paper whether it be getting their logo design or getting their tax ID number. They are totally excited when they get the finished product and it exceeds their expectations.

JE: How and when did you get started? Joanne: ZOE Sales and Marketing, Inc. officially started in October of 2013. JE: What motivated you to go into this arena? Joanne: Well I have been in sales since 2004 when I started working for an insurance company and have been in sales every since. I was motivated to start my own company when I realized there were people out there who had products and services to offer but didn’t feel comfortable or confident enough to go out and promote it themselves.

JE: Do you think every business should do marketing and why? Joanne: I think every business should market their business so people know they exist, even if it’s just through word of mouth. Marketing helps grow your business. The more people know about you the more likely they are to patronize you. JE: What is the difference between marketing and advertising? Joanne: For me, marketing is when you are branding your business, putting it on the consumers mind. When they see your unique logo, they think of your business. You are promoting your products and services. The purpose for advertising is to make customers aware of your products and services and to create a desire for them. JE: In your commercial you say there are five things people need to know about their business, can you expound?

Joanne: The five things people need to know about your business is; 1. WHO you are. 2. WHAT are you selling? 3. WHEN can they get it? 4. WHERE can they get it? 5. WHY should they want to get it? JE: Where do you get most of your clients? Joanne: We have gotten clients from Facebook but most of our clients come from our awesome call team making phone calls to business owners. JE: What kinds of feedback are you getting from clients? Joanne: We get great feedback from our customers. We’ve gotten replies from customers saying they will only use us from now on or I’m a customer for life. It feels great when you see the smile come across their face or hear the happiness in their voices over the phone. JE: Tell us about your upcoming event. Joanne: The event that we are associated with is the Soul City Showcase presented by Xfinity. It will be held on June 14th and 15th at the Jackson Convention Center Complex. The artist scheduled to perform are T.K. Soul, Melanie Fiona, Isaac Caree and Leandria Johnson. There will be health screenings, food tastings, vendors and more.
