Jackson Expose’: Tell me about some of the legends and trailblazers you have had the privilege of interviewing, for example, civil rights activist Rosa Parks. Katina: I have had the opportunity to interview former NAACP president Myrlie Evers, presidential candidate John Edwards, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the Reverend Al Sharpton, basketball greats Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley, and blues legend B.B. King. I also interviewed several Mississippi governors including former Governor Haley Barbour after Hurricane Katrina. In addition, I interviewed notable figures and broke many stories in the lacrosse rape investigation at Duke University in North Carolina. And, I interviewed the late Rosa Parks. Interviewing Rosa Parks was like having a conversation with your grandmother. She was lovable, caring and gracious.

COOKING WITH

HONEY & FRIENDS Honey and Friends, a cooking TV show featuring “Honey” the host of the show, airs on Comcast Channel 98 “Local 98”

the host of tv show honey & friends

Jackson Expose’: How did you get the idea for a cooking show? Honey: Well Terri I guess the most beautiful thing about dreaming is it is like a motion picture it’s always moving. Cooking With Honey And Friends started as a very simple prayer I prayed standing in my kitchen in 2010 “ Lord would you please teach me how to cook!” Every time I share this story it sounds so funny to me. I can’t imagine what it sounds like to those who hear it. But that little prayer has allowed me to see and understand Gods love and concern for every little detail of our lives. 16

www.ExposeMagazineOfJackson.com

I didn’t know it at the time that asking for something so simple would open the doors of creativity in my heart and mind the way it has and given me daily opportunities to meet so many amazing people I would not have before that prayer. In 2012 with the help of my cousin Tina I started The Cooking With Honey And Friends Facebook page. We were just testing the waters. We uploaded a few photos, wrote a few notes about great southern cooking, and my love for MISSISSIPPI. When we got our fist “like” I couldn’t believe it. In May of that same year someone suggested that I shoot a video and put it on YouTube so

The new face of Southern Hospitality is gaining new fans from all over the world!

Cooking With Honey And Friends started as a very simple prayer I prayed standing in my kitchen...”

I took my iPhone and started sharing my dream lol: “ Hello beautiful MISSISSIPPI my name is HONEY!” it just felt right and 8 months later through the power of Facebook I met Randy Tinney, the owner of Comcast Local98. He made an offer and I took it. It’s funny that when you start to allow dreams to flow, they will guide you even when you can’t see all the “where’s or how too’s”. When your hands appear to be empty or when others are silent and “NOs” are loud - even when you are simply afraid (and trust I have had a lot of those days), you can still trust...it’s the beauty of FAITH and this keeps me moving. Jackson Expose’: How long has it been running and how did you get it started? Honey: In May we will have been on television for one year and I plan to introduce a one hour show to celebrate.

Jackson Expose: What kind of feedback have you gotten from viewers and supporters? Honey: WOW Terri the feed back has been incredible. People have been so supportive right here at home. And I am taken aback when I get input from people from other parts of the world. Especially since we are still a very young dream. Terri it is so funny when someone will stop me and say are you HONEY, I love the show. That just always blows me away and reminds me to stay open for GREATER TO COME! I’ve even had one occasion when I over heard two women talking about how they loved the show. They didn’t know I was listening and they were a little upset because they wanted to see more episodes WOW!!!

HONEY Jackson Expose: I was watching an interview you did on the Hanna Hopkins Show where you shared a bit of spiritual wisdom. You stated that “if you don’t have a dream, God has nothing to work with.“ Can you expound on that?

and building a vision for good is what we were all born to do. And as a Believer in God and creation, I personally believe it is our first nature to do so. The proof is found in children. All you have to do is spend a moment with a child. Their hearts are filled with great imagination. Dreaming is the key to entering God’s playground and our FAITH AND HIS LOVE FOR US will make us become more than conquerers and give us the willingness to fight a good fight of faith overcoming fear through the willingness to develop new thoughts and ideals that fill us with LIGHT and INSPIRATION so that others can find there way. Our dreams become unstoppable! Jackson Expose’: I saw on your Facebook wall that you got a call from The Rachel Ray Show. Tell us about that! Honey: Oh WOW “Rachel Ray”

I actually entered a competition THE GREAT AMERICA COOKBOOK where I had to submit a few original recipes and a 3 minutes vide. I got a call explaining that my application was one of many that they were looking at after being told that there were hundreds of applications submitted. I can’t really express what an amazing moment that was for me to just get the call because it was the first competition I’ve entered. That moment has become a sign post to keep moving, to add more fire to my passion and to NEVER STOP DREAMING because even small dreams can move big mountains.

Jackson Expose: Where do you see yourself five years from now? Honey: Where do I see COOKING WITH HONEY AND FRIENDS 5 years from now... I believe with all of my heart that when people say MISSISSIPPI their next words will be ~Cooking With Honey And Friends~. I want this brand built on a standard of love and excellence to win the heart of this beautiful state and the world and to become the new face of Great Southern Hospitality!

FINANCES

TEN STEPS TO FINANCIAL HEALTH 1

From John Smith - California Springs

Work out a budget and stick to it, which means spending less than you earn. A budget is a detailed record of your total income and expenditure. So many people say, ‘I don’t know where my money goes.’ This will not happen if you budget correctly; your purse may still be empty, but at least you will know exactly where the money went! Budgeting is a chore for everyone, but no matter how boring you find it, it is an essential first step in managing your finances.

26

www.ExposeMagazineOfJackson.com

selves.’ Small amounts will build up over time into substantial sums. Build an emergency fund in case of the unexpected crisis, and a ‘fun’ fund – everyone needs an occasional splurge on a night out or new outfit. If you are starting your working life, consider making your own contributions to superannuation; if you are an older worker, consider increasing your contribution.

4

tough.

Have financial goals. Having something to save for, e.g. a holiday, a car, your own home, will inspire you to persevere with your budget when the going gets

5

2

Get organized. Start a file for financial matters and keep your accounts in order.

3

Always save a regular amount of your income – make that a priority. As the old saying goes, ‘Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after them-

Pay off debts as quickly as possible. Interest rates charged on loans can mount up very quickly. Always pay the debt earning the highest interest first.

6

Avoid impulse spending. Don’t buy what you don’t really need. Before buying an item, ask yourself how many hours you would have to work to pay for it. For example, if you earn $15 an

hour, you would have to work ten hours to pay for a $150 bottle of perfume.

7

Be careful with credit cards. Credit cards can be a recipe for disaster, tempting you to buy things you cannot afford. Credit cards are not free, and the interest rates are high. Unless you are certain that you can pay your bill in full each month, the safest option is to do some ‘plastic surgery’ and cut up your credit card/s.

8

Never sign a contract or agreement unless you have read it thoroughly and completely understand its terms and conditions.

9

Avoid activities or substances that may become addictive, i.e. gambling, drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. These can very easily lead to financial ruin, not only for you but also for your family.

10

Put your money to work. It’s not much good saving your money if it is just sitting around in a basic on-call bank account earning a minute amount of interest. Shop around for the investment that best suits your needs, taking into account such things as fees, interest rate and accessibility.

These steps are discussed in more detail in Money Management for Women by Sheila Freeman and Helene Richards. Download your FREE chapter, “Breaking Up”.

top reasons to use social media

For Personal Branding and Reputation If you are completely new to the social media arena and you just poke around on Facebook for fun right now, it’s time to get a crash course in branding yourself as someone to trust and someone to hire. In this day and age, thinking about your mission and vision for your brand is just as important as anytime in history. However, with the power of social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, you can move a lot faster, which can be both exciting and scary. Especially if you have no clue where to begin.

Here are some tips to get started. WHAT IS YOUR BRAND? First of all, you need to know who you are so that you know how to sell yourself. For many people, they want to be everything to everyone, increasing their chances of being found by that perfect client who will love them. But instead of trying to be everyone, it’s time to get more specific. NICHE-ING YOURSELF You want to find out what you can offer to that no one else can. What do you possess that will make you someone 28

www.ExposeMagazineOfJackson.com

others want to follow? This doesn’t have to be related to your celebrity at all. You just want to find something which will bring people to you. Let’s start with an example. If you’re a writer, you (and others) might think that’s pretty dull. And if that’s the only thing that you talk about, then yes, you might be lost in the shuffle of so many other writers in the world and online.

But if you were to talk about how you are a GHOSTWRITER, that’s going to get the attention of people. First of all, it still shows that you are a writer, but it also makes those who are not familiar with ghostwriting want to learn more about what exactly this means to them and to their needs. It starts a conversation which the other side will want to continue. You want to find one thing that makes you special. Maybe it’s your crazy obsession with knitting or a need to color your hair every two days. Whatever it is, you want to find a way to set yourself apart from the rest of the world, even if there are hundreds of others like you.

Tips to get started on building your (or your clients) brand: 1. Make a list of things you love. Take some time to think about what you really love about yourself and what you might want to spend more time on is where you begin. 2. Research others like you Once you have an idea of who you are and what you want to promote, see how other successful people online have done it. What do their websites look like? Their blogs? Their Twitter accounts? What do their skins/ themes/colors etc, look like. Is it consistent?

3. Find a mentor or example. You will probably find one or two people who you think are close to doing what you wish you were doing right now with your branding. Try to do things similar to what they are doing. However, realize that copying is not the sincerest form of flattery online. It is the sincerest form of plagiarism. Change it around, and make it yours.

getting them to want to learn more is the goal. So long as your bio pulls someone in and makes them want to find out more, that’s all you need to do. And wit makes a great first impression. C. Change it up
