Hello! Welcome to The Third Wave. This resource has been designed to guide you through what’s legal and what’s not when it comes to microdosing. We will let you know what substances you should avoid due to their legal status, and what activities you can perform without breaking the law. #1: Purchasing/Possessing Magic Mushrooms The psychoactive ingredient in Magic Mushrooms, psilocybin, is illegal in most countries. There are some exceptions to the rule; Magic Mushrooms are legal to purchase and consume in Brazil, Jamaica and the British Virgin Islands, and their use has been decriminalized in many countries. Read our comprehensive article on the legality of Magic Mushrooms worldwide In the Netherlands, psilocybin is legal to purchase and consume in the form of ‘Magic Truffles’ simply a part of the mushroom that has been overlooked by the law. If you live in Europe, these are your absolute best option for consuming a completely natural, legal substance for microdosing purposes. Magic Truffles can be purchased online - we recommend Truffle Magic for all your truffle needs. (Be aware that purchasing Magic Truffles from outside the Netherlands may still be illegal in your country.)
It’s also legal to grow Magic Mushrooms in many countries - see the next section for details.

#2: Growing Magic Mushrooms In nearly every Western country and constituent around the world, it is legal to purchase Magic Mushroom spores, which can then be grown into mushrooms. Purchasing spores is illegal in some places, including the states of Georgia, Idaho, and California, and the nation-states of Belgium (luckily, Belgium’s next door neighbor has legal psilocybin-containing truffles), Finland, Germany and Russia, to name but a few. It is also technically illegal to grow your own mushrooms in some countries, including most US states. However, keep in mind that many countries (including the US) have laws to protect you from unwarranted search and seizure. Read our comprehensive article on the legality of Magic Mushrooms worldwide Growing your own mushrooms is the absolute best way to ensure a consistent supply of medicine. However, it is also the most time-consuming and difficult way to procure substances for microdosing. If growing is to be done correctly, it takes time and effort and a lot of learning. Here are some different options for growing mushrooms: Grow kits: You can order grow kits from any online head shop in the Netherlands. Grow kits make the process of growing mushrooms easy for those who try. (Make sure grow kits and growing mushrooms is legal in your country before ordering.) Purchase spores online: Legal in most countries, purchasing spores gives you control over the entire process of growing mushrooms. Again, if you plan to purchase grow kits or spores, we recommend doing so from Truffle Magic. Other resources: 1. Read a few books about the process of growing your own mushrooms. The best couple books to date are the ‘Magic Mushroom Grower’s Guide Simple Steps to Bulk Cultivation’ and ‘Psilocybin Mushroom Handbook: Easy Indoor and Outdoor Cultivation’ 2. Follow what the guys at Fungi Academy do - They currently host workshops and seminars on how to grow your own mushrooms, with the primary location in Guatemala. In the near future, we will release a comprehensive online course on how to grow your own mushrooms, so you can learn everything you need to right from home. If you want to receive details about the publication of this online course, please sign up for our e-mail waiting list so you can be the first to know! #3: Purchasing/Possessing LSD Buying or consuming LSD is illegal in almost every country in the world. You probably won’t be able to legally microdose with LSD. The only places you can obtain LSD are through street-level dealers or the DarkNet; these routes are both illegal. Since LSD is a Schedule I drug in most countries, punishments can be severe. There are legal alternatives to LSD, called research chemicals, which we address below.

#4: Purchasing/Possessing Research Chemicals ‘Research chemicals’ are designer molecules that are typically made to bypass drug laws, while mimicking the effects of prohibited substances. 1P-LSD is a research chemical (RC) and analog to LSD. It is unregulated in many countries - however, purchase and possession could be prosecuted under ‘analog’ laws, such as the US Federal Analog Act (there are no examples of this happening so far). Last year, the UK passed the Psychoactive Substances Act, which banned all ‘designer drugs’ including 1P-LSD. It is legal to purchase online in some countries, including Germany and Canada. Read our comprehensive article on the legality of research chemicals
According to various threads and forums online, the experience of users who consume 1P-LSD is similar to the experience of LSD. Unfortunately, there is little to no research on the effects of 1P-LSD, so much of what we know is based on anecdotal evidence. Anecdotal stories are popping up concerning the efficacy of 1P-LSD for microdosing; and we hope to add more over time.

#5: Joining your Local Psychedelic Community
In the past, gatherings of psychedelic-inclined folks was usually carried out in the outer-fringes of society: Burning Man; Grateful Dead performances; music festivals like Bonaroo and Coachella. While these events hold a necessary space within the psychedelic culture, many psychedelic-inclined folk simply do not attend such large gatherings. Nowadays, there are above-the-ground psychedelic communities popping up all over the place. To name just a few: the Brooklyn Psychedelic Society, the London Psychedelic Society, Psychedelic Club, Mind Manifest Midwest, and about 50 others. Thankfully, it’s completely legal to profess your interest in psychedelics, and get together with other people who have similar interests. So, what are the steps you can take to join your local Psychedelic Society? 1. First, see this list of all the psychedelic societies in the world. Soon, we will publish our own comprehensive listing of every psychedelic society on our resource page. 2. Connect with the local leader of the psychedelic community. E-mails of the leaders should be listed on the information page - as well as external links to either their Facebook page, MeetUp page, or website. 3. Go to an event and begin creating relationships! And do it out of authenticity and in the spirit of connecting with other psychedelic users. As you cultivate these organic relationships, you might find a legal route into microdosing.

Are these substances harmful? Evidence-based research proves the relative harmlessness of LSD and psilocybin. In 2010, David Nutt, a British psychiatrist and neuropsychopharmacologist (quite the mouthful), published an extensive study on the comparative harms of drugs. LSD and Magic Mushrooms scored as 2 of the 3 least harmful drugs. As long as specific precautions are taken (specifically, those with any family history of psychosis must avoid microdosing, and psychedelics in general), the likelihood of having a ‘bad trip’ causing psychological distress is nearly zero, especially when microdosing. However, there have been no long-term studies on the risks of microdosing with these substances for extended periods of time. There is some evidence to suggest that long-term microdosing regimens could cause heart problems. This is why we recommend avoiding extended periods of microdosing (longer than a few weeks). We also warn against microdosing if you have an existing heart condition.
