A Letter from the Editor

I live by a simple statement: “In order to love life, you must live it.” I know better now than to believe that some things will fall from the sky and land into to my lap. It doesn’t happen for me like that. I have always had to work just to get over, and for everything that I got, the getting part was real hard. I have accepted this to be a natural course for my life. I also understand that for things to be easier, every now and then I might have to press the rest button and start over. My mama has always told me that an idle mind is the devil workshop. And because I’m not one to disobey what my mama says, I have always believed that. As foolish as it sounds, if I am not doing something I feel as if I am wasting an opportunity to grow. The down side to this lifestyle has often led to me feeling overwhelmed with the tasks at hand, and this has led to meltdowns that has caused me to feel as if failed at some point along the way. I refuse to accept failure. I rather acknowledge it as a setback. As a Christian, I know that a setback is just an indication that God is trying to set me up for something greater. I believe that we are just as we see ourselves as, a follower or leader, a winner or loser, destined for greatness or looking for a purpose. Every now and then give your life a once over. Maybe some things haven’t happened as you wished they would have, or when you wanted them to. Press the reset button and start over. Remember that God has a plan for our lives and we will never truly know our purpose and meaning until we get in alignment with His plan.

The center opened on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at 2200 East Market Street, Suite C, Greensboro, NC. The Community Awareness Center, which is sponsored by Ms. Portia Shipman, whose lifelong dream is to help others. “I wanted to name it the “Portia’s Help Center”, but I was not sure it would be appropriate. So after tossing it back and forth in my head, community awareness sounded better” said Shipman. The center will provide space and other resources for the community such as a virtual office for individuals interested in starting a business and space for private meetings with potential clients. The center has a conference room large enough for meetings of 10 to15 individuals. Reservations are required to secure meetings. The center will also house all of the Sherri Denese Jackson Foundation programs, and serve as a key place to integrate information to bring people together in order to meet the needs of the community. · · · · ·

By Juron Davis Photo by Rhonda Sampson If you’re a seasoned female golfer or a newbie looking to learn the finer details of the sport, then the Greensboro Women’s Golf Club is the group for you. Established in 2011, the Greensboro Women’s Golf Club was created to develop a healthy network of female golfers in Greensboro and surrounding areas. They host clinics, scrambles, tournaments, community outreach events and have twice been featured on WFMY News 2. Greensboro native Rhonda Sampson, an information technology analyst, along with marketing director Tanya Reid, formed the group as a means to share their passion for golf and ensure that every woman has an equal opportunity to learn, enjoy and experience the benefits of the game. “We continually strive to strengthen the group by successfully supporting one another through visionary outreach, partnership and quality outreach education,” says Sampson.

Golf is uniquely different from other sports because important business deals and community decisions can regularly occur within the course of a game, thus providing players a healthy foundation to network with individuals of diverse backgrounds and career experience. The Greensboro Women’s Golf Club attracts top-ranking female executives from Fortune 500 companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Ralph Lauren and Volvo. Sampson firmly dismisses the notion that golf is boring, saying that the majority of those who enter with that mindset are the ones that become hooked. Effective August 1, 2014, current members will only pay $15 for annual membership dues. Non-members pay $25. h

"I Was Born To Sing By Tonya Dixon Photos by Still Shots Photography

J

Jacqueline Jackson has been singing for as long as she can remember. As a double PK (both her parents are preachers), she often found herself singing, playing the piano, and leading worship or assisting in some capacity in the church. She comes from a long line of singers, so it’s nothing she has to “try” to do. It’s simply a natural reaction. Jackson still loves to sing. She still maintains a passion and love for music. Beyond the music and the songs she sings, she admits she’s simply a worshipper at heart. Consequently her gift is undeniable. Today, Jackson divides her time between being a minister of music for Mount Zion Baptist Church Youth and Young Adult and recording her first complete album. Sounds like a hectic lifestyle? That’s because it truly is one. In addition, Jackson is expecting her second child in just a few short months.

Hectic or not she’s not slowing down. With much anticipation and fanfare, her new album is slated to drop this fall. The first single, Time and Season, was released last year and met with a great deal of success; however, the momentum was slowed due to a minor typo on the digital release. Nevertheless, if the remainder of the tracks is anything like the single, the full album will certainly be amazing. She categorizes the album release as being full of praise, worship and inspiration; basically the songs of her heart. Not to be compared to any other, she is an eclectic mix of various genres of music; Gospel, Jazz, and Christian. However she admits she is very fond of Christian artist and groups like Jesus Culture, Israel Houghton and New Breed, Chris Tomlin, Hillsong, and many others. Not only is Jackson singing, but the Michigan native is also showcasing her writing skills on much of the album. For Jackson, there’s no difficulty in singing what’s already in the heart. “It’s all about being passionate about your call, and having an ongoing relationship with God that supports your purpose in life. When I’m singing, I would just describe it as having an opportunity to minister to God and show Him in song and visual expression how special He is. However it is also an opportunity to set the atmosphere for what God intends to do in a particular service or setting. Worship has to be intimate and connected. As a psalmist, I realize that I have a responsibility to demonstrate that every time I hit a platform,” Jackson says. Obviously, Jackson has spent significant time in preparation. Years and years of singing, teaching, learning and constant communion with God is what she knows has gotten her to this moment. She has obtained a BA in Vocal Performance from Michigan State University. “It is very important to have personal one on one time with God through prayer and scripture and daily worship,” she says. “Many days I also have on something inspirational as a way to fill my spiritual bank throughout the week since I pour out so much.”

Continued from previous page The five years Jackson has been leading corporate worship at Mt. Zion has not only given her a greater opportunity to connect with God, but the sheer scope of the platform has transformed her entire ministry and further developed and cultivated her character. It’s much more than simply getting up on stage and encouraging others to sing. For her, it’s about obedience and purpose. She now recognizes the reasons behind the paths her life has taken. The growth and maturity she recognizes in herself is why she knows she is doing what God has called her to do. “I have evolved into purpose and now I know it was all God’s plan and I know that this is something that he has gifted me in,” says Jackson. “I realize he has taught me how to lead and how to push other people who have similar gifts to lead. I don’t always have to be in the spotlight. I don’t want to be a selfish leader. God is building things in me. I’ve learned love on a different level.” Jackson says she’s has definitely grown vocally, but God has also developed a strong spiritual self-esteem in her. Because she is so cognizant of the individual gift God has placed within her, she doesn’t get caught up in comparing herself or her ministry to anyone else. However, she wasn’t always as certain. She even questioned whether she was singing simply because she could or because it was something she had always done. Nevertheless, she now knows unequivocally that she’s doing what she was placed on earth to do. For Jackson, worship and singing for God is never work. No matter what the day delivers she understands ministry is her personal release; nothing else matters, and as she explains it, “if I’m leading worship people are depending on me to be effective and I don’t have a problem with that because I know how good God is. When it comes to giving back to Him what He has given to me I try not to ever hold back. I absolutely do my best to always Give God my all. It’s on and poppin’ wherever I go, whether it’s the stage or teaching, I give God my all.”

God is building things in me Vocationally, Jackson was a school music teacher for 10 years (she still teaches vocal and piano lessons), but following the birth of her first child she elected not to continue. The desire to teach and mold young minds has always been one of her passions and remains so. In fact, she regularly speaks with youth groups and welcomes and relishes the opportunity to pour into their lives every chance she gets. She credits her parents for doing an excellent job molding her and her siblings and instilling Godly principles in them when they were young. “I think my parents did a great job equipping us. They gave us God and taught us the way of Christ so it made it easier for us to make the right life choices. My siblings and I knew we needed God in our lives and understood that a true relationship with Him would assist with everything life would present,” she says. “They gave us scriptures. They taught us how to apply the word of God in our lives and I see how effective that has been for me and I see the absence of that in the lives of so many youth today. It’s frustrating, but it’s possible for our youth. Parents just have to be committed to equipping their children.” Jackson is definitely in her element when she is combining her true loves—singing and discipling people. She wants people, especially youth, to be able to put into action what they hear, so that they can in turn help someone else. Whether through the music industry, leading worship at her local church or standing and proclaiming the Gospel at the next youth conference, one thing is certain: Jacqueline Jackson will be touching the heart of God and helping to build up the next generation of soldiers for Christ and winning lost souls. Be on the lookout this fall for Jacqueline Jackson’s first complete album. The first single, “Time and Season” can be purchased now via iTunes.

rom poodles to pit bulls to German shepherds, every dog can be trained. Every dog can be obedient and every dog can be disciplined. According to Serious K9 NC, all it takes is a good trainer and proper procedure.

Serious K9 NC is an obedience and training service. Comprised of five self-proclaimed dog lovers, the professional team has extensive experience breeding and training various dog types, but specifically German shepherds, the American pit bull, Belgian Malinois, Dutch shepherds, Presa Canarios and Cane Corso. Darren Swanson and Mark A. Lindsay met over ten years ago and with their vast knowledge of breeding and training dogs they instantly built a bond. Darren later met John Miller, the current president of Eastern States Working Dogs Association and built Serious K9. When Darren relocated to North Carolina he wanted to continue Serious K9 and after meeting Laketta Lee the group formed Serious K9 NC. With the increasing demand for obedience and protection training, Steven Smith joined the group to aid as a decoy and second obedience trainer. The newest member Emory Moody breeds Presa Canarios and brings a wealth of business knowledge to the group.

“The trainers have spent countless hours attending seminars, classes, and in consultations enhancing their skill set, but it’s the actual interaction and rapport they have with the dogs that makes their service and abilities so amazing.”

Darren, Emory, Mark, LaKetta and Steven each maintain their individual specializations within the group, but they all agree and reinforce that obedience and control should be the outcome of a well-trained dog. Collectively, the group has well over 25 years’ of experience in the dog training business. Each trainer has an aptitude and love for something different. Darren enjoys teaching and training law enforcement and protection dogs. He has worked with several police departments and other agencies. Mark is adept at teaching obedience, although he initially began as a personal protection dog trainer.

Continued from previous page Steven admits he’s simply a dog lover and loves all aspects of working with the dogs, even as the training decoy (the controlled threat to the dog during training sessions). The only female of the group, Laketta, owns and breeds many of company’s working line German shepherds. In addition, she handles the technical and administrative support for the business. Many of the group’s dogs have gone on to work throughout various aspects of law enforcement such as the Military, and search and rescue, as well as in public service arenas. The trainers have spent countless hours attending seminars, classes, and in consultations enhancing their skill set, but it’s the actual interaction and rapport they have with the dogs that makes their service and abilities so amazing. “For example, the Presa Canarios looks big and frightening but is really like a big teddy bear. We know through experience that the breed is not very animated, is highly intelligent, will do what it is told and is an excellent protector,”Moody explains.

“During training sessions, the trainers maintain complete control at all times. Moreover, it’s important to note that the dogs are taught through repetition and confidence building, rather than presumed trainer domination over the animal by provoking it to anger or enraged to attack.” During training sessions, the trainers maintain complete control at all times. From the youngest to the oldest, any age dog has the ability to be trained. Old dogs really can be taught new tricks. Serious K9 NC teaches beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. They also help develop socializing skills in dogs. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. The trainers work closely with clients and tailor obedience training to fit their specifications. They also teach clients why and when a corrective action is performed. Moreover, it’s important to note that the dogs are taught through repetition and confidence building, rather than presumed trainer domination over the animal by provoking it to anger or enraged to attack. As a matter of fact Serious K9 NC is adamantly opposed to the notion of training or developing “attack dogs.”

14

July/August 2014

“We don’t train everybody’s dog in personal protection. We have found that everybody doesn’t need that. Sometimes I discourage it,” says Swanson. “When you say attack you are creating an offensive dog. Our dogs are taught to react based upon what you do. They are not attack dogs. They are personal protection dogs and there is a difference. Some people don’t understand the difference. Just because you make a dog bite doesn’t mean anything -- any dog will bite. The key is teaching a dog NOT to bite and bite only when necessary or on a given command. An attack dog is a dog that has been encaged and when it is let loose, it operates uncontrollably. A personal protection dog is one you can have around you and acts cool, but if I grab you, the dog is going to react based upon what I do. You should be able to have the dog around your family and the dog remains disciplined.” The group recently had a client that requested the dog be trained to only bark when someone approached the home door, but not to bite. It’s a tactic that Serious K9 NC has discovered often works much better. Ultimately, the final responsibility lies with the dog owner to continue to reinforce what the dog has learned through the trainer.

Darren Swanson

Handler, Decoy, and Head Protection Trainer

Serious K9 NC dogs are trained to respond to certain types of threats in various situations. Focus is also particularly important to dogs being trained for hunt and retrieval. In nearly every situation, the goal of the trainer is to build the confidence of the dog to point where it will not be satisfied until the mission or objective is complete; whether that means retrieving a ball thrown into the forest, tracking down a criminal, or guarding the property of its owner or protecting its owner from would be attackers. The group has trained protection, search and narcotic dogs to work in various situations and for various clients; specifically, clients such as Don Barber, a sheriff’s lieutenant, K9 handler, trainer and owner of Caroline-A Police K9, LLC, as well as Randy Howell, a retired Reidsville, NC K9 officer.

Mark A. Lindsay

Head Obedience Trainer & Breeder

Clients would be happy to know when they hire Serious K9 NC they are receiving top-notch, professional, service. The group regularly hosts seminars and demonstrations. When attendees sign-up they will not only have access to the wealth of knowledge that the group offers, but many world renowned dog trainers as well, such as Mike Suttle of Logan Haus Kennels. Often times, the trainers will make time to give specific pointers and tips to those in attendance.

Laketta Lee

Handler, Breeder & Administrator

A great deal of time and dedication is required to adequately and professionally train and breed dogs; much more than what meets the eye. “It can get very messy and be very time consuming,” says Lee. Nevertheless, the desire to see and develop a disciplined dog is simply a joy and for many of the trainers it’s a character trait they have maintained from childhood. Serious K9 NC has provided clients across the country with exceptional service and working line dogs that perform at an exceptional level and train to do exceptional tasks. The group can provide specialized, obedience and protection training for any dog on any level. Above all else the goal is to strengthen the bond between the dog and his owner and make their experiences as enjoyable as possible. h

“Once upon a time, I came across a lady with a pleasant smile and heart for service. Her name is Agatha Bouvier Martin Grimes. Having spent time around her and watching her business savvy mind at work, she became an inspiration for me to begin my own business, My Pleasure 2 Serve, Inc., an event planning company. I have had many joys in being an entrepreneur and one of the greatest came in planning the 50th birthday extravaganza for my business mentor.” Monica Walker MY PLEASURE 2 SERVE

Agatha Grimes

O

Celebrates 50 Years of Life

n March 21, 1964, Coleman and Brenda Dawkins gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and named her Agatha. Agatha went on to become a bright and successful woman in her various ventures. So when we had our initial discussion on planning her party, we were puzzled as to how to reflect her 50 years of life in one theme. The answer came instantly as she enjoyed a movie date with her husband and from there, the “Agatha Grimes Great Gatsby Experience” began. I immediately got to work finding a venue, securing decorations and much more. While Agatha was out on one of her many ventures, she stumbled across a secret in the C-Connect Event Center and decided it was the perfect spot for her events.

Now that the location was secured, Agatha selected Torita Waller as the decorator. Mrs. Waller laid out a nice vision at our walk-through and her execution made us feel like we were on the movie set. My next step was perhaps my biggest feat yet; I had to tackle the guest list! How do you create a list for a person that knows hundreds of people and more in her 50 years of life? The solution to that was to have multiple events, of course! We settled on a private and intimate dinner for those that had been intricately involved with Agatha over the course of her life and the second event was open to one and all. We even included a kid’s party to celebrate the many godchildren and young mentees in Agatha’s life.

After getting the invitations designed and printed, they made their way to mailboxes across the US. RSVPs were pouring in. Two people for Friday night. Five people for Saturday night. Three for the kids’ party. After securing a drop dead gorgeous party dress for Friday and funky and fly ensembles for Saturday, Agatha settled in as being the honoree. This allowed me to focus on my contracted event planner duties. I set my sights on picking a unique favor that represented the honoree. Each guest would receive a lovely set of two personalized glass coasters with a warming message of appreciation inserted. One of the satisfying things in planning this event was working with her inlaws, the Grimes family as the selected bakers and caterers for the events. The catering was done by mother-in-law Lydia Grimes and sister-in-law Shonkia Grimes, sweets done by sister-in-law Kim Grimes and their entire family pitched in to ensure their area was a success. They provided a delicious pasta bar with shrimp, chicken and meat sauce, different pasta choices and savory sauce selections to top it off. This proved that families can indeed work together and perform an outstanding job for one another. I outlined a program for Agatha’s approval and incorporated a few twists that wowed the audience. One delightful feature was Agatha’s dance entrance led by her son, DJ Martin. Her head table was set for her immediate family and one seat was specially wrapped to reflect the physical absence of her beloved father, the late Coleman Dawkins. While Agatha wished her father was there to celebrate this occasion, she was reminded how much he loved her throughout the night. Each program participant was strategically chosen and played their part better than it was imagined. The Friday program was mixed with fun and delight. One minute you were laughing and the next a tear leaked from your eye. Friday night captured the softer side of Agatha’s life story.

Above, Agatha is pictured with Bishop George and Lady Edna Brooks who led the blessing and charge for her program. Below, Agatha and her husband John wow the audience with a little 1920 swing step.

Saturday opened up with the kid’s party at Skateland USA and all the kids, toddlers to teenagers, had a ball! Even the parents enjoyed skating with their precious ones. Full off pizza and cupcakes, each child left with a personalized gift that included original and heartfelt words of encouragement that will not only remind them of dear “Aunt Aggie” or “Momma Agatha” but cheer them on to greatness. Eight o’clock in the evening arrived and it was time to party!!! Like many of us, Agatha had her share of fun with little to no boundaries and we tapped into that time through great music, funky fashion and entertaining surprises. Rodney Slade and DJ Horse Rainey had the party jumping with the old school classics and top line dances. The guests were greeted by a nine foot Leonardo Dicaprio look-alike that danced, juggled and wooed the crowd! We incorporated a “This is your life through fashion” segment that featured surprise models. However for Agatha, Saturday night was topped off by a surprise guest in the form of her husband John, as he delivered his birthday greetings through his original rap to their favorite song , “Oh How I love You Girl” by D Train, complete with a self created line dance called “Ag”. Each moment was carefully captured by the awesome photography skills of Mike Legrand, a long time friend of Agatha. Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22, 2014 went down as the unforgettable “Agatha Grimes Great Gatsby Experience”.

Below, Agatha is pictured with her son DJ Martin (left) and mother Brenda Dawkins caught in a moment of love.

Agatha has been fortunate to create and maintain some quality relationships over her 50 years of life. Needless to say, her close friends and family did not hesitate at the opportunity to serve and assist in any way possible. Whether it was assisting with the budget, greeting the guests or pouring drinks, the unselfishness of her circle was shown during the planning and execution of all her events. I give a special shout out to those with whom I worked directly and thank them for fulfilling their commitment to ensure the greatness of this endeavor. As an event planner, I know first hand how important your team is in the success or demise of an event. I am happy to say working with all parts of this grand affair was not always easy but was tremendously beneficial for me and my business. All the smiles and expressions of enjoyment reminded me why five years later, it’s still My Pleasure 2 Serve. It would be my pleasure 2 serve you as well! h Monica Walker and My Pleasure 2 Serve, Inc. phone: 336.279.0467 - email: mypleasure2serve@ymail.com Special Contributing Vendors Torita Waller, Decorator (toritawaller41@gmail.com) Rodney Slade, DJ/Sound (rslade68@hotmail.com) Mike Legrand, Photography (legrandmanagement@gmail.com)

as Amigas, Inc. is a civic organization that was established in 1957 in Charlotte, N.C. by two teachers, Dora R. Mason and Mary Q. Moore. The mission was to enhance the quality of life and promote the general improvement of the community they live in. In addition, they strive to encourage personal and professional growth, and to foster a closer relationship among sisters through cultural and social activities. The motto is, “Those who apply themselves too closely to little things, often become incapable of accomplishing great things.”

In 1966, Dora Mason approached Lola Anne McAdoo about organizing a Greensboro chapter of Las Amigas, Inc. In February 1967, Lola McAdoo and seven of her friends, mainly teachers became charter members of the Greensboro chapter of Las Amigas. The charter members were: Lola McAdoo, Dorothy Swann (first President), Alice G. Brown, S. Cecelia F. Taylor, Betty Artis, Johnsie Dalton, Faye Caple and Willie Mae Lucas. Today, Lola McAdoo is the only active charter member.

heresa Jones is a 55 year old mother of six and grandmother of 15. She is also a very humble and a loving Christian woman who was born and raised in Greensboro, N.C. She credits her two loving parents for keeping her in church; the place that provided solitude and where she also learned to love the Lord Jesus Christ, who she declares as the master of her life. Mrs. Jones is also the owner of Mrs. T’s Blessed Jewelry, a custom jewelry line that is designed by her own hands. She prays and meditates over each piece, and the end result is a magical creation that her clients have grown to expect and enjoy. “I love using the creativity that almighty God has blessed me with and the satisfaction that my customers express. The gratification of seeing the items that I create from scratch from my very own designs makes it all worth it,” says Jones. Her designs consist of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and ankle bracelets. “I customize each piece according to my customer’s request. I use all types of gemstones, beads in all shapes, sizes and colors. I also design children’s jewelry,” she says. Her most memorable piece is the first piece she ever made; a three piece necklace she sold to her sister. Her response was that it was very beautiful and she encouraged her to start selling her items. Her company started in 2010 after the encouragement of family and friends. Arts and crafts are always something that she has enjoyed doing. “I was making other items before then but began making jewelry around that time,” she says. “Learning and finding a way to turn it into a business was the only missing component.” The challenge of growing Mrs. T’s Blessed Jewelry into a bigger brand only fuels Jones fire. She hopes to open her own jewelry store and continue to create the jewelry that is satisfying. She would also like to teach her grandkids the craft of jewelry making. h

A Closer Look At Men’s Skin

M and hobbies.

en, just like women, deal with issues such as aging, pigmentation, sensitivity and acne. However, although there are similarities in skin conditions, male skin can be challenging based upon genetics, his lifestyle choices, his career

For this reason, male grooming and skin care requires tailored in office treatments, carefully chosen products and skillful at home grooming techniques. Treating a man’s skin effectively begins with a brief understanding of male physiology. The biggest difference in male and female skin is attributed to the sex hormones. The main operating hormone in men is testosterone which is also considered to be a steroid hormone. While this hormone is present in females, it is 10 times higher in men causing the many aspects of the male features. It is produced by the Leydig cells which are found near the testes. Through a system of negative feedback, testosterone is converted to a more tolerable form and released to target tissues. For young males, the effect of testosterone is initially responsible for triggering and maintaining the male sex reproductive organs. As the male ages past puberty it is responsible for much of the secondary sex characteristics such as deepened voice, muscle

development, body strength, sex drive and desire, metabolism and most importantly for the purpose of this discussion, thick skin, hair growth and glandular secretions. A combination of these characteristics gives male skin a great advantage when it comes to aging. For example thick hair protects skin from sun, thick skin decreases laxity of skin and glandular secretions

offer moisture to the skin. With these advantageous, characteristics are not in harmony or are not properly aligned; skin complications arise such as ingrown hairs, hyperpigmentation, acne and dry skin. This can either result from improper product usage or simple neglect to use products. Today’s man is fortunate to take advantage of technological savvy grooming practices. More and more men are paying attention and making efforts to improve their health- this is reflected in their skin. Current fashion trends places importance on tailored, clean cut profiles and is moving away from sloppy, slouchy looks. As a result of fashion trends, men’s grooming habits are following suit. We now know men are spending more money on grooming or skin care products to stay in a competitive race in career and personal life. Some men are even making appointments with plastic surgeons for that nipped, tucked, more importantly polished look. In a

Cleanse

In any grooming regimen it is important to prep the skin. A great skin prep begins with a cleansing the skin. Do not use bar soap. Use lukewarm water, not hot water. Choose a wash that has salicylate, lactic and/or glycolic acid. These ingredients help slough away dead skin cells.

Shaving The best shave is accomplished in the shower, decreases the risk of razor burn. Use a lubricating shave cream or gel. Shave creams are more moisturizing than gels. It is best to use a manual razor with a single blade, this gives a close shave but not too close. Razor bumps and ingrown hairs are usually the result of too close shaves. When shaving, shave in the direction of hair growth, not against.

Rinse and Tone Remove all products from your face. This is/was previously done with after shave, but be careful not to use after shave that has alcohol because it can dry the skin. Dehydrated skin can result in dull, flaky skin and lead to premature wrinkling. Instead use warm water or invest in a toner. If an aftershave is your choice, choose one that contains Vitamin E. Eye Cream-Even though your skin is thicker that does not mean your first wrinkles will not appear in your eye area. Choose an eye cream to use daily, twice daily if you wish. Serum/Moisturizer- Products that contain aloe or hydro-cortisone cream are calming to the face. It therefore protects the skin and decreases hyperpigmentation caused by a shaving regimen. Consider selecting a moisturizer that contains sunscreen. Sunscreen- Choose a sunscreen that has a SPF 30 or above. This is the most important step in your regimen since more men than women are seen for precancerous skin conditions. h

world where youth and health is regarded as proof of power, men can no longer be a soap and aftershave type of guy. Men do not have to take giant leaps from their current grooming practices to keep up, but changes are recommended.

What’s A Guy To Do? From the male’s perspective, the top four complaints are ingrown hairs, acne, dry skin and aging skin. It would be wise to initially check with a health care provider regarding hormones if one feels at all like their hormones may be leading to problems with secondary male characteristics. It is a simple enough test and can be completed in minutes. Next on the list, one should adopt a skin care regimen. It is important if you have more than usual skin concerns to consult with a skin professional that can put you on track for the skin products that is tailored for your skin. It may be important to use special products in addition to the basics to address specific conditions on the skin. Below is a basic skin regimen, it is not all inclusive.

Terri & Keith

ARMORY GOLF CENTER 24

By Tonya Dixon Photos by Howard Gaither

I

n the past, whenever Keith Hunter wanted to wind down or relax he played tennis, but the moment the former Cleveland Browns free agent was introduced to golf his whole world changed.

Hunter was well into his 30s before he ever touched a golf ball. The game just didn’t appeal to him; but some friends eventually coerced him onto the golf course and as he puts it, “$500 later I was in love with the game.” He not only fell in love with the game, he fell in love with everything associated with the game. From apparel (he owns his own golf apparel company-KGH Golf Collection) to the all-important skill of caddying. His life is consumed by the game. At one point he was going to golf school and taking every class he could find. It became a necessity because he soon wearied of constantly being told what to do and how to hit the ball by people who weren’t experts. His days were spent hitting balls, up to 6,000 a week, and perfecting his craft. He even played on the Senior Sunbelt Tour. It’s all about how he learned the game and it’s the reason he’s so passionate about his business. Hunter is the owner of The Armory Golf Center in Winston Salem, NC. The facility is the perfect place for the golf enthusiast as well as the novice. As the master instructor, Hunter offers private lessons, academies, clinics, junior camps, and he even designs special event programs for schools, corporations and non-profits. He’s particularly proud of his caddy program and believes it is one of the best programs in the area. “I’m teaching them how to become a caddy over the course of three or four months. It’s a full curriculum,” he says. “Being a caddy deals with math, science, physics and being the watchful eye for the golfer. You can take any kid, it doesn’t matter their educational background. Once they learn that skill they can enhance it later in life because they will already know the rules and etiquette.” Accordingly, he believes that it can be a launching pad and open gateway for someone willing to learn. There’s an academy for men, women, boys, girls and every age group beginning at three years old. Golfers are taught proper techniques such as swing, grip, stance, posture, alignment and balance. Summer camps are also available for seven to 16 year olds. There’s no other facility in the region that offers such substantial packages at reasonable rates, which is all definitely by Hunter’s design. He wants to provide a source of entertainment and education to the area and particularly to those who wouldn’t ordinarily see golf as their sport of choice.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. Corporations and Fortune 500 Companies regularly call on him to design and host retirement, fundraiser, employee reward and moral boosting clinics. Churches and non-profits are even requesting clinics as a new and innovative way to host traditional events. Want to give the ladies of the church an opportunity to get to know the first lady? Why not do it while learning or enhancing golf skills? The men of the church want to have a nice calm gathering? A golf clinic will fit the bill perfectly. Additionally, the center offers basic drive range services for anyone interested in spending the day with a golf club and bucket of balls. Hunter believes his background as a professional football player and college football coach helped perfect his eye for the game of golf. He took the basic lessons, fundamentals and techniques he acquired and decided to incorporate them into teaching golf and has been doing so for over 10 years. “I use them to teach people how to get from where they are to where they want to be. I teach from the ground up. A lot of pros teach up down. Most people just want to see their ball in the air going straight and when they see that beginning to happen they start believing what you are teaching them,” Hunter says. “We don’t change your swing, we reverse your thinking. The thing most golfers worry about is someone changing their swing. I don’t have to change your swing at all. Once I get you to change your thinking, I can get you to swing the way you need to in order to hit the ball where you want it to go. It doesn’t matter whether you have an outside in swing or an inside out swing.” Hunter admits many people are intimidated by the game because they don’t know much about it and it appears awkward, but he believes it’s a great sport, especially for women and children who are quickly becoming the sports fastest growing population. In fact, his fiancé Terri Kemp, who helps run the day to day operations of the business and had never played golf, is playing remarkably well-like someone who has played the game for years in fact. Likewise, her children, who range in age from five to 13 are not only playing the game, but are learning the business of the game. “It’s a natural fit for women and children. They even have a natural swing. It’s the men that you first have to get rid of the ego,” he jokes. Hunter is making sure The Armory Golf Center is on track to become Winston Salem’s premier golf facility. The technology and amenities that he has integrated is nothing short of top notch, including the V1 Pro Swing Analysis, the Tomi Motion Putting System and the ES14 Launch Monitor as well as other high tech training aids, a weather protective canopy, 20 acres of landing area, a lighted range, Wi-Fi service, flat screen TV’s, food and beverages and much more. Plans are already being made to enlarge the pro shop where he will sell everything golf related and more. The possibilities are endless and the future is bright for Hunter and the center. The excitement that he has for the game is sure to ignite a fire and drive in everyone from golf pros to timid newcomers. h

Mount Zion Baptist Church of Greensboro, Inc. Family Matters Conference 2014 By Tonya Dixon - Photos by Mt. Zion Baptist Church

F

rom the beginning of time the family has been the bedrock of society. God instituted family even before He began delivering his laws. It stands to reason that when a family is intact then other aspects of life will eventually follow suit. Mount Zion Baptist Church of Greensboro, Inc. has caught hold of that premise and has determined to be among the first to help lead families back to its proper position. Consequently, the ministry is gearing up to host its first Family Matters Conference August 13 – August 16, 2014.

The conference is specifically designed to renew faith, reignite fellowship and reaffirm the entire family. Each segment of the family is targeted. There will be something for every aspect and every person—marriages, singles, youth, children, traditional families, blended families and single parent homes. Through combined and breakout sessions of worship and practical seminars, Family Matters will address relevant and current issues that every family faces. Last year, Mount Zion began having “themed” months. Each month church activities were centered on a specific theme such as stewardship or discipleship. When the focus turned to family issues the response was enormous. Leadership began hearing testimonies of how lives had been changed and family relationships improved simply through the month long series. Moreover, people were requesting more. The church soon discovered what they were hearing wasn’t an anomaly. They needed to do more. Through prayer their decision was confirmed and the vision began to take shape. The idea is for those who were not able to experience the powerful sessions last year to have an opportunity to hopefully receive breakthrough in their lives as well. Senior Pastor Bryan Pierce explains just how important it is for the church to empower families. “I’m kind of old fashioned when it comes down to family. I still believe family is the fabric of society and the community. When it comes to church the family serves as a witnessing tool,” says Pierce. “There are some people whose introduction to God will be based on their introduction to a family. My son or daughter may meet someone that doesn’t know Christ. If that person comes into our Christian home then that becomes the greatest witness or testimony. That will make that person, who doesn’t know Christ want to know him and attend church.” Pierce also cautions it could also have the opposite effect if the fruit of the family is contrary to the Word of God. Pierce adds that if the church can empower families and give them tools to succeed then the lost can be won. “We want to reach beyond the four walls and prepare this generation and families to be equipped to handle different issues. If we [the church] can come alongside and be an aid then we will do a great service to the kingdom.” Young Adult Pastor Joe Frierson says a kingdom mindset is exactly how the church approaches the issue of empowering families. He says, “Families are connected to other families which are connected to regions. If we continue to offer spiritual growth opportunities to families it will begin to have a regional effect.” The conference is fueled through constant intercessory prayer. Not only is there a call for the family to reunite, but there is a mandate for fathers to resume their natural leadership role in the family. Even though some fathers may not be able to physically be in the home, the ministry contends that fathers are a necessary component to reconnecting families and will be addressed throughout the conference. Although the foundation of Family Matters is certainly based upon Christian principles and rooted in Biblical themes and although there will be church services during the conference, the entire event is designed to affect and empower the natural as well as the spiritual man. Pierce says the conference is breaking down the barriers of “churchiness.” The event will kick off with a family movie night on the church lawn, followed by a fireworks show. From spelling bees to panel discussions, each day registrants can expect a well-balanced plate of information, entertainment, worship and music. Many of the events are even open to the public. The Family Matters Conference may be new and different, but the vision and purpose remains consistent with the churches core mission to reconcile the world to God through Jesus Christ. h

t a very young age, Antonio Duggins, a Williamston, N.C. native has always valued one thing with family, friends and even animals, and that is their loyalty. It was something that was engrained in his mind growing up and he has incorporated the same values into his clothing line business, Bloyal.

Duggins decided to break into the fashion industry with Bloyal because it was a creative avenue to get a message across to the masses. “One of the first things people look at or judge you by is what you are wearing,” Duggins says. “I have my own style that I prefer and it makes me different and sets me apart from others. Having a clothing line helps me to get my own message across that speaks volumes and allows me to get the community involved.” For many years, Duggins entrepreneurial spirit was inspired by a long time fashion guru from his hometown known as, James “Caroliente” Flames. He watched and supported his clothing line for years and even though their brands and clothing are different, he saw how he got his own personal message across and his sense of fashion that established a name for himself. The Bloyal clothing line consist of t-shirts, sweatshirts, beanies, hoodies, performance shirts, tank tops, crop tops, sweat pants and wrist bands. Duggins is always adding new items to his product lines and expanding his reach in various markets. His message to consumers is to Be Loyal to any and everything that you believe in or stand for, no matter what it is. Also, the brand recognition behind this clothing line means that no matter what you do or become, stay true to it and help better the people around you. “You should Bloyal to yourself and support those that support you.” An interesting attribute to the Bloyal brand is the paw print that is incorporated into his fashion line. Duggins has always been an animal lover and was raised around dogs all his life. For the past seven years, he has rescued, raised, bred, and shown American bullies. “It’s my passion and my dogs have really lived up to the phrase, ‘there’s no loyalty like a dog’, and no matter what, my dogs have been true to me and have proven that “dogs are man’s best friend,” he says. “My first two dogs, Montega and Angel have shown me the real definition of loyalty. One guards my front while the other has my back. I live by LOYALTY and expect the same from the company I keep.” One of Duggins many methods of sharing his message is giving back to communities by supporting local charities like Relay for Life and volunteering to speak to children in schools to provide motivation and encouragement to help keep the youth on the right track. In addition, to his community service, Bloyal has acquired a men’s softball team and a work out team to help motivate people to reach their weight loss goals and maintain healthy lifestyles. Duggins continues to stay inspired by bettering himself and the people around him. He believes that the world has grown to become a cruel place but if he can strive to help better others, then he’s doing his part. He would also like to acknowledge and thank God, because without Him none of this would be possible. Next would be his immediate family that has impacted his business the most, through their creative ideas, their support and their motivation. “Without them I don’t think I would work as hard,” he says. “My hometown of Williamston and the whole (252) area has supported my business in a major way in helping to spread the movement and making it bigger than I ever imagined.” In addition to his hometown, he appreciates the support of his alma mater, Winston-Salem State University that has supported him tremendously. Duggins thanks Shima Andrale for her motivation. He also thanks Team BLoyal, his very close friends, Vertical Limit Tees and Greensboro for their continued support. His future plans and goals for Bloyal are to expand throughout the world, improve his production time, reach out to more schools and charities, and to one day position his products in a clothing store one day. h

Living Healthy

LifewithDr.J Breast and Babies

Dr. Jillian Morgan Dr. Jillian Davis Morgan holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology with a focus in oncology. She is a researcher, motivational speaker, professor and medical science liaison for an international biomedical company.

Hello my healthies! After the March article on cancer entitled “Cancer is a bad…shut your mouth,” I received a question about breast cancer and fertility. The reader wanted to know if treatments for breast cancer would affect their fertility and if there were options for preserving fertility so they may have children in the future. A person’s first reaction to a diagnosis of breast cancer may understandably be anger, sadness and depression. For many young women diagnosed with breast cancer, these feelings may be coupled with uncertainties about fertility. According to the American Cancer Society, 25 percent of new breast cancer cases are in women of childbearing age. However, with the strides that have been made in cancer research, women diagnosed with breast cancer are living longer and more productive lives. Breast cancer is no longer a death sentence! Treatment options have expanded to focus not only on survival but quality of life as well. Future fertility is a major concern for a lot of women diagnosed with breast cancer. There are many avenues young women with breast cancer can explore to preserve fertility. The current therapies for the treatment of breast cancer include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Surgery does not affect fertility and radiation has little to no affect. However, chemotherapy can greatly reduce a breast cancer patient’s fertility. The extent of the detrimental effects that chemotherapy will have on a woman’s fertility depends on the age of the patient, the specific chemotherapeutic agent used and the total dose of that agent. Chemotherapeutic agents cause infertility due to their harmful affects on the ovaries. As you may know, the ovaries are the organs that produce and house a female’s eggs until they are released during ovulation. While chemotherapeutic drugs produce their desired effects by killing cancer cells, they also kill normal cells in the process. Some of the normal cells that are affected are the woman’s reproductive eggs. It is important to note that chemotherapy can cause a more rapid loss of eggs than the decrease that normally occurs over time. You see, women are born with a certain number of eggs and as we age, this number decreases. Coupled with the natural decline in reproductive eggs, the effects of chemotherapy on the ovaries in older women are more pronounced and leading to an increased chance of infertility. However, in the case of younger women, there is a better chance of maintaining fertility after chemotherapy due to a larger supply of eggs that still remains. Because of these reasons, the risk of infertility is largely dependent on the age of the patient. Research has shown that certain chemotherapeutic drugs are more likely to result in infertility than others. The most common chemotherapy used for the treatment of breast cancer is CMF which consists of cyclophosphamide,

34

HuamiMagazine.com

July/August 2014

methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil. Alkylating agents, which are a common class of drugs used in the treatment of cancer and are the most toxic agents to the ovaries and a woman’s fertility. Cyclophosphamide is one example of an alkylating agent. Methotrexate and fluorouracil, on the other hand are thought to have minimal effects on the ovaries and ultimately the patient’s fertility. Not only is the specific drug that is used as a factor in infertility, the total dose of that drug is also a factor. The higher the dose and the longer the length of administration, the greater the damage that is done to the ovaries. There are options for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and would like to have children in the future. These options include embryo freezing, also known as embryo cryopreservation, freezing eggs (oocyte cryopreservation), and ovarian cryopreservation. Embryo cryopreservation involves extracting the eggs from the female patient, fertilizing them outside the body and freezing the fertilized eggs or embryos until the woman is ready to become pregnant. Oftentimes, prior to extracting the eggs, the woman is given fertility drugs to increase the number of eggs that can be produced. However, it may not be a good idea to give women diagnosed with breast cancer fertility treatments. The reasoning is because these treatments increase estrogen production which may stimulate the growth and metastasis of the existing cancer. However, in the absence of the fertility treatments, only one or two eggs may be extracted and preserved per cycle. If fertility treatments are necessary, a short course of high dose tamoxifen may be most beneficial for breast cancer patients. Tamoxifen will increase the production of eggs while minimizing the risk of breast cancer growth and metastasis. Once the woman has completed chemotherapy, she should speak with her oncologist about when it is safe to utilize the embryos for pregnancy. An additional therapy that can be used is the freezing of the patient’s eggs. In this procedure, the eggs are harvested in the same manner as embryo freezing. Oocyte cryopreservation may be a viable option for women who do not have a significant other nor wish to use a sperm donor. These eggs are frozen without being fertilized. They are stored until the woman is ready to become pregnant. To date, the number of live births utilizing this method has been few; however major advances have been made in perfecting this technique. An experimental method that is also used to preserve fertility is the freezing of ovarian tissue, a procedure known as ovarian cryopreservation. In this procedure, a woman’s entire ovary or a slice of ovarian tissue containing eggs is removed prior to chemotherapy. This ovarian tissue is frozen until the woman is ready to become pregnant. Once that time has arrived, the tissue is implanted in the pelvis or arm of the woman. Over time, blood vessels nourish the tissue and eggs begin to develop and mature. The mature eggs are then removed and fertilized. After fertilization, the embryo is implanted in the woman’s uterus and she is able to carry the baby to full term. It is understandable that the thought of breast cancer is marked by mixed emotions. However, for the woman with a maternal instinct, the focus does not have to be on grim fertility outcomes. There are multiple interventions that have been researched to decrease the chance of infertility and increase the possibility of pregnancy. If having children is a concern, you should speak with your oncologist and a fertility specialist prior to undergoing breast cancer treatment. They will be able to advise you about the best options to protect your fertility. So, as always, I encourage you to GET YOURx LIFE--- speak to your physician about the best treatment for you and your babies! h

Dr. Maya

Angelou By Tonya Dixon

O

n Wednesday, May 28, 2014, the renowned Dr. Maya Angelou quietly transitioned to an eternal resting place. The world was encouraged with beautiful tributes, discussions, interviews and remembrances. Admirers and critics alike revisited the great bodies of work she left behind and rediscovered the power of her prose and the alarm of her activism. The death of Dr. Angelou, who could easily be described as the iconic mouthpiece of America’s heart, was not only a profound loss to the heart, fabric and culture of America, but it also shed light on the significance and effect of one life welllived. From author to actress to activist, she lived a full life.

Phenomenal Woman Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies. I say, It’s in the reach of my arms, The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It’s the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can’t touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them, They say they still can’t see. I say, It’s in the arch of my back, The sun of my smile, The ride of my breasts, The grace of my style. I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me. Now you understand Just why my head’s not bowed. I don’t shout or jump about Or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing, It ought to make you proud. I say, It’s in the click of my heels, The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, The need for my care. ’Cause I’m a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That’s me.

No doubt her death will indelibly leave a massive void. From growing up in Stamps, Ark. without the parents she desperately wanted to help navigate the harsh racism of the day, to becoming San Francisco’s first black female cable car conductor, to touring across Europe with the opera, Porgy and Bess to dancing with the renown Alvin Ailey Dance Company to actively supporting and coordinating the causes of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to penning and publishing more than 30 bestselling titles, the life Dr. Angelou lived is not only her story, but it has become the people’s story. How can one adequately articulate the impact and loss of the master expressionist? The one who seemingly wrote the perfect prose for the perfect season; spouted the most eloquent and profound words of wisdom; and performed with seamless elegance. How does the world replace the one who gracefully spoke the heart of so many, stood for righteousness and challenged others to do the same? How is it kept alive? The answer is simple. Continue Dr. Angelou’s legacy of common decency and love. Share with one another; teach one another, stand up for one another and restore one another. Were you proud when she read On the Pulse of the Morning? Share it with your children and others. Does Phenomenal Woman encourage you to stand just a bit taller? Is Still I Rise your personal anthem? Honor Dr. Angelou, not by turning her life’s works into artifacts and fossils, rather keep them handy and used often as reference points for living vivid and vivaciously. Maintain a continual circulation of her literary and theatrical works of art. Given Angelou’s background, her style and talent is simply a result of her ability to move rather than mope. We salute Dr. Angelou for speaking to the depths of our hearts, for not only telling us, but for convincing us of our greatness and daring us to be more. Dr. Angelou often spoke of love and its liberating powers. She is forever liberated and we will forever indulge in the love she left behind. She was and will forever be OUR Phenomenal Woman. h

Alana Allen and I Am A Queen Gives Back

By Jeuron Dove Photos by Alana Allen xcelling in academics should be the goal of every child as they return to school this fall. However, many children are unable to reach their maximum potential due to a lack of necessary resources. Fortunately, a Greensboro-based nonprofit is making it easier for all children to succeed inside the classroom.

I Am A Queen will host its 6th Annual Back to School Drive on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Windsor Recreation Center, located at 1601 E. Lee St, Greensboro. This event is open to community. Since its inception, the school drive has become a local institution providing several area children an opportunity to receive precious school supplies that they may have otherwise missed out on. Alana Allen, founder of I Am A Queen, started the school supply drive out of a desire to help children in need. Starting with 25 backpacks in 2009, the amount of supplies has doubled every year since. The goal for this year is to help 800 children in the triad. An event of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without community support. This year’s media partners for the event include Huami Magazine, 97.1 WQMG and Born to DJ. Also, I Am A Queen has partnered with local organizations that include James B. Dudley High School Athletic Booster Club, Beyond the Block, Footsteps to Follow, Destined 4 Greatness Event Planning, Ange’le’ N. Simpson Foundation of Love and the Live Life Foundation. In addition to their support, each organization plays a critical role in challenging others to give. Of all the memories created from the last five years, none are more gratifying than the personal testimonials of those in attendance. “Hearing their stories is confirmation that we’re doing the right thing,” says Alana. Aside from backpacks, other items needed are pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, folders, crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks and scissors. Donations can be made online or by dropping supplies off at one of the designated drop-off locations throughout the city. h

Self Improvement

The SECRETS To More By Demetra Moore Photo by Demetra Moore

M

ost people today have one desire in common and that is to have more. Let me elaborate, we all want more in some capacity, be it money, job or family. It’s the very force which drives us to grind on a daily basis. Well I’m here to tell you there are three simple things you can do to have more.

HAVE A PLAN You must have an idea of what you want to do. So many times clients are not clear on what they are trying to accomplish. When that is the case, take some time and discover your “why”. Your “why” is what drives your ambition and pushes you to progress. Planning allows you to set goals and celebrate strides as you progress.

EXPECT TO WIN

Demetra Moore is a certified professional career coach and the founder of Moore Out of Life, Inc

Most of us start projects thinking yes we are going to do well. But do you really believe it? Are you willing to make the sacrifices to win? You can only expect to win when you have done the required work. So focus on the learning through every situation and using it to be a better person. As Zig Zigular says, “failure is an event and not a person.” Sometimes those minor set backs are preparation for your glorious come back.

HIRE A COACH Sometimes we have reach plateaus in life. Then we start to feel like that is all life has to offer. When in all actuality that’s not the case, you just need a different perspective and someone to help you see the bigger picture. Hire a coach who can share some additional insight and experience. It will challenge your character and push you to become the person you were destined to be. Erma Bombeck said “When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope not to have one single bit of talent left. Then I could say I have used everything you have given me.” That quote inspires me to have a plan and do what is needed to have more in life. You have the potential to live life to the fullest. As of today, stop saying life is too short, it’s not, we are taking too long to start living it. h
