Il book serve ad un fotografo a raccontare il proprio lavoro e le potenziali possibilità. Qualsiasi lavoro dipende prima di tutto dall’incontro tra un briefing interessante ed un fotografo innamorato delle grandi possibilità di rappresentazione e di comunicazione della fotografia. E poi è solo questione di sinergia con la camera, con il computer ed i suoi programmi, con il team che aiuta a preparare l’immagine, con il tempo, con il trattenere il respiro. E’ così che tutto diventa fotografia.

Noi fotografi non amiamo manifestare pareri sul lavoro dei colleghi, se non in casi estremi. Questo perché sappiamo perfettamente quante variabili è possibile incrociare, variabili che possono trasformare un lavoro qualsiasi da fantastico a pessimo. Perché la collaborazione è importante, ma lo è anche l’autonomia responsabile, quella che permette di ottenere sempre e comunque un lavoro prezioso con un taglio interpretativo puntuale e personale. Il fotografo non è un esecutore, quando ha una personalità ben precisa, legata artisticamente all’immagine e alla comunicazione. Soprattutto oggi che possiamo dare ormai vinto l’analfabetismo fotografico e la fotografia tecnicamente è alla portata di tutti, il fotografo ha superato il puro compito di “scrivano”, il fotografo ora ha senso quando diventa poeta e scrittore. E’ un artista che coniuga assieme l’esperienza e la conoscenza del mercato in una sintesi visiva che ha la caratteristica di essere di immediata lettura.

E io sono un fotografo e in questo mio Book ho cercato di spiegare il mio modo di sentire e di conoscere il mondo attraverso la mia arte, quella per cui mi sento responsabile. La fotografia, appunto..

Proprio per raccontare in piena autonomia e indipendenza ho mantenuto un’impostazione di personal book che mi ha permesso una totale libertà di espressione.

Ad ogni buon conto sono sicuro che se il mio talento, assolutamente innato, non avesse incontrato le persone con cui opero quotidianamente da molti decenni, non avrei mai potuto sviluppare una struttura sempre in crescita, che gestisce ed è garante del successo dei nostri tanti clienti. Lo stesso book deve quindi la sua probabile riuscita a questo lavoro di gruppo.

il contenuto delle immagini, immagini che ho voluto trasportare nel grande classico BN per radicalizzare la lettura dei volumi, con esclusione dei casi dove il colore riveste un’importanza vitale. Il tutto per raccontare la realtà a cui fermamente credo.

IT’S MY BOOK Books are useful for a photographer in order to recount his work and its potentiality. Any kind of work depends, first and foremost, on the encounter between an interesting brief and a photographer in love with the great possibilities photography has for representing and commmunicating. And then it is only a question of synergy with the camera, the computer and its programmes, the team helping to prepare the image, time, and holding one’s breath.

All this becomes photography.

We photographers do not love to judge our colleagues’ work except in extreme cases. This is because we know perfectly well how many variables can crop up, variables that can transform a work from the very best into the worst. Because cooperation is important; but

Amo immergermi in quei pochi tratti del mondo ancora incontaminato, respirare il vento ancora intero, ascoltare l’acqua sincera, i profumi intatti nella memoria, ma è in questo grande paesaggio che le mie mani cominciano a lavorare, creare. La sabbia, il legno, la terra, le foglie, a qualsiasi natura posso far raccontare la poesia e il mio pensiero, e se avessi le mani mille volte più grandi costruirei oggetti mille volte più grandi, è questo il mio universo.

Forse è per questo che immergermi nei percorsi incantati delle architetture di ogni tempo e godere degli oggetti del design, quello

autentico, quello delle silenziose opere d’arte che circondano l’uomo e che lo fanno vivere meglio, mi viene voglia di raccontarlo con la fotografia, di unirmi a questo coro di armonie che non possono essere altro che eterne nella cultura umana.

L’arte vera non ha bisogno di spiegazione, arte è, e basta. E credo sia umiliante trattarla come moneta di scambio, anche se consola sapere che potrà aiutare qualche vero artista. “L’arte è qualcosa con cui si può sempre farla franca” diceva Marshall McLuhan, sociologo canadese.

La mia è una fotografia che racconta spazi, prospettive, momenti e sogni ed è il tempo che mi fa capire

dove trovo il contenuto e dove no, dove scopro o creo la bellezza, dove il significato non muore. Delle mie capacità di “scrittura ” ne ho fatto una professione e quasi sempre lavoro su commissione, ma questo non toglie nulla. Dove la libertà di interpretazione mi viene concessa riesco a costruire immagini indistruttibili, che non hanno paura del tempo e provo grande soddisfazione per questo. Oggi, come ieri, l’immagine è un sistema di comunicazione.

I veri lavori contemporanei che troveranno spazio tra le opere importanti dell’uomo sono annidate tra l’attuale comunicazione, piuttosto che nascoste nell’arte classica a cui attualmente vengono imposti valori incredibilmente stolti, guidata da un commercio basato sull’ignoranza di ricchi collezionisti illusi di raggiungere con questo un livello culturale socialmente riconoscibile.

E il mondo è strano, senza dar significato a tutto, tutto acquista una logica, ed è questo il senso bello delle cose, dove esiste l’opposto dell’affine, dove la contraddizione è un gioco permanente, lì voglio esserci anch’io per raccontarlo.

I love to immerse myself in the few parts of the world that are still uncontaminated, to breathe in the wind still whole, listen to sincere water, perfumes intact in the memory, but it is in this great landscape that my hands itch to work, to create.

Sand, wood, earth, leaves, my poetry and thoughts can be expressed to anything in nature, if my hands were a thousand times larger I would build objects a thousand times bigger, this is my universe, perhaps this is why when I lose myself in the enchanting and endless paths

of architecture and appreciate objects of design, those authentic, those of the silent works of art that encompass man and make him live better, I want to express it all through photography, to join this chorus of harmony which can be no other than eternal in human culture.

Real art does not need explanation, art is, full stop. And I believe that it is humiliating to treat it as simply a money maker, even if it consoles me to know that it could help out some real artist. As Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian socialist put it ‘Art is

something that you can’t always get away with’.

Mine is a photography that tells a story, prospective spaces and moments and dreams and time make me realise where I can find content and where I can’t, where I can discover and create beauty, where meaning doesn’t die. I have made a profession out of my ‘writing’ abilities and I almost always work on commission, but this doesn’t detract anything, where I am given freedom of interpretation I manage

to construct images that are indestructible, that do not fear the passing of time and I get enormous satisfaction out of this. Today, like yesterday, image is a comunication system. Real contemporary works that stand out among man’s important works of art are hidden in present communication, rather than concealed in classic art, to which nowadays the most ridiculous values are attributed, led on by a trade based on the ignorance of rich collectors who are eluded into thinking that they can reach a socially recognised cultural level by doing this.

And the world is strange, without giving meaning to everything, everything acquires a logic, and this is the sense of the beauty of things, where the opposite of the similar exists, where contradiction is a permanent game, I, too, want to be there to tell its story.

Lo spirito umano si travasa nei sentieri delle proprie opere, oggetti costruzioni e volumi. Io, che sono un traduttore di queste opere, mi confronto quotidianamente con questo quesito, io che scrivo con la luce, le dimensioni, forme, colori, movimenti, spesso sono chiamato ad interpretare, a costruire una testimonianza che può diventare essa stessa opera, con una vita assestante pur rimanendo la memoria dell’opera.

Anche se sono un po’ troppe le opere che, prive di pensiero e ricche di volontà speculative, occupano i nostri spazi, creando confusione, disorientamento, traducendo in denaro un valore e, un valore in denaro, in maniera ossessiva e assurda.

Ma io mi dedico alla lettura, a me piace la sensazione di navigare negli spazi architettonici, percepire quello che comunicano, capire ogni fun-

zione, e mi piace guardare la gente attratta o respinta da questi volumi, inconsci partecipanti all’opera che con le loro reazioni istintive qualificano l’opera in maniera inequivocabile. Nella vecchia nostra Italia , passeggiando per le vie degli antichi centri storici, ci si rende conto di quanto la gente ami quegli spazi, quelle foreste di muri di sasso, e di come anche eviti accuratamente di passeggiare nelle zone scabrose dei piani regolatori che hanno deturpato la cara vecchia Italia. Ma esiste un’architettura moderna messa al bando, confinata agli angoli, però lontana dagli attenti sguardi di piccoli politici e grandi geometri comu-

As a writer who uses light, dimensions, shapes, colours, movements, I am often asked to interpret, to build up a testimony that can in itself become a work of art, with a life of its own, while still remaining a memory of the work. Even though, there are far too many works that, lacking in thought and rich in speculation, occupy our spaces, creating confusion, disorientation, changing money into values and, values into money, in an absurd and obsessive manner. But I dedicate myself to the interpretation, I like the sensations of navigating in architectural spaces,

Gli spazi che ho interpretato spesso sono confinati in zona industriale, ma creano delle magiche isole nelle quali il benessere cromatico e spaziale ci fa dimenticare tutto. Quando li si attraversa passeggiando è facile sentire le forme e la luce. La capacità di credere in un progetto contemporaneo, che utilizzi le luci proprio come volumi architettonici più che decorativi, mi permette non solo di documentare le opere, ma facilmente di ottenere delle opere. Mi auguro solo che il lavoro degli autentici architet-

ti-artisti possa essere capito e sviluppato, che possa, attraverso le fotografie, portare una qualità riconosciuta, trovare spazio e dare vita anche alle tristi zone residenziali che a colpi di ringhiere e terrazzini inutili ci hanno rubato la bell’Italia.

E’ facile ascoltare gli spazi che alternano colori e luci, sempre diversi, diversità che per me è sempre stata un valore importante, crescere è sapersi mettere in discussione, migliorare vuol dire cambiare, perciò mi aspetto un progetto nuovo ogni giorno sperando di non essere deluso.

Paesaggi dell’uomo perceiving what they communicate, understanding their functions, I like watching people who are attracted or repulsed by these volumes, unconscious participants of the work of art that with their instinctive reactions qualify the work unequivocally.

In our good old Italy, strolling through the narrow streets in the antique historic town centres, you realize just how much people love these spaces, these forests of stone walls, and just how much they carefully avoid the scruffy areas with which planning regulations have defaced dear, old Italy. However, one form of modern architecture exists, exiled, confined to the corners, but far enough away from the attentive eyes of minor politicians and ‘important’ town hall surveyors that are re-

sponsible for our development, it is the industrial zone, which gives architecture the scope to develop in its own way, sad but true! Spaces that I have interpreted are often confined to industrial areas, but they create a magical island where chromatic and spatial well-being makes you forget about everything else. When you take a walk around them it’s easy to get the feel of the shapes and the light. The possibility of believing in a contemporary project that uses lights as architectural volumes rather than for decoration, allows me not only to document the work of art but also to obtain works of art. I only hope that the work of authentic architect-artists can be understood and developed, and that through photographs, it will gain recogni-

tion, bring back space and life to the sad residential areas that through the fault of useless railings and little balconies have robbed us of our beautiful Italy. It’s easy to listen to spaces that alternate colours and lights that are always different. Diversity for me has always been an important value, to grow and be able to face criticism, to improve means to change, so I expect a new project everyday, forever in the hope of not being disappointed.

La fotografia e il design esplorano assieme la strada che porta il design ad essere l’opera che resta vicino all’uomo e, la fotografia, uno strumento di ricerca e costante verifica dell’obiettivo posto nell’equilibrio estetico e nell’uso formale di questo. Se il design è la ricerca dell’oggetto ergonomico con rispetto estetico e funzionale, la fotografia del design è l’equilibrio dell’immagine tra sensazione e funzionalità. Su questa fotografia i designers percorrono cambiamenti continui e il punto di vista del fotografo diventa per loro un confronto con una realtà esteriore e un sistema di controllo per la riuscita dell’opera o del prodotto.

Naturalmente, nel nostro tempo, raramente si ha il privilegio di avere tempo a disposizione a sufficienza per poter fare una campagna in maniera organizzata. Oggi spesso la pubblicità è un last minute e bisogna saper ideare e realizzare in tempo reale: questa è una storia tra le tante. Mi telefona il cliente chiedendomi qualco-

ticolarmente illuminato, con cui ho potuto esprimermi al meglio e in piena libertà, con una naturale intesa che ci lega, in pratica una volta avuto l’input ho carta bianca, questo mi costringe a dare il meglio. L’input (dopo un lungo periodo in cui l’azienda ha scelto un tipo di pubblicità più “commerciale”, nella quale l’input restava quello di mostrare il prodotto senza dar peso all’immagine dell’azienda) era quello di tornare ad un’immagine di massima visibilità. Sto sempre ad ascoltare le esigenze del committente indipendentemente dai miei piaceri, credo molto nel pensiero del produttore o ideatore e come tale studioso del progetto, solo in casi di estremo errore mi contrappongo.

Io credo che, a parte qualche geniale invenzione, sia stato raggiunto un certo standard produttivo nel settore dell’arredamento e che rapidamente i prodotti si allineano, con differenze minime. Quello che può invece cambiare è la filosofia e lo stile di un’azienda, di una firma, oggi la gente spende solo se trova qualcosa di nuovo, che esca dalla noia quotidiana, tutto questo deve essere espresso da un’immagine.

L’ ideazione nasce da una ricerca, poi si riassume in uno schizzo che serve soprattutto a prevedere i problemi realizzativi e a trovare le corrette proporzioni. La presenza del container nei pressi dello studio, date le condizioni di realizzazione (a 5 giorni dalla data di pubblicazione!) è stata anche determinante per scegliere il come realizzare l’immagine. Progettata in due foto da rimontare a Photoshop, abbiamo organizzato prima il piano inferiore, il più complesso, la realizzazione di un pavimento in metallo è stata funzionale alla possibile interpretazione di una piattaforma navale, l’auto rossa sportiva rappresenta il piacere di un viaggio: è sempre molto importante associare ai piaceri i prodotti, farli vivere attraverso i sapori, profumi e piacevolezze varie. Il prodotto, in questo modo accorpa a sé le stesse qualità, le stesse piacevolezze. La seconda foto ha dovuto avere tempi record, il tempo atmosferico stava cambiando, questa è la controindicazione delle foto in esterni, il tempo è imprevedibile. Un significativo cambio di luci avrebbe vanificato anche la prima fotografia, non ho potuto quindi fare un allineamento adeguato, sapevo comunque che poi Photoshop mi avrebbe aiutato.

Quando si fanno fotografie che vanno poi riassemblate e ricomposte al computer ci vuole la massima attenzione perchè errori prospettici si pagano cari con risultati fasulli, oppure ore e ore di lavoro. Questa ripresa non l’ho fatta in digitale, che finora ho usato solo per foto minori, ma con la tradizionale pellicola poi scansionata, ridotta in file. Il lavoro al computer è stato quello di montare le immagini, scontornando i soggetti ed accostandoli, raddrizzando le verticali, la diversità del container (si trattava dello stesso container) è da attri-

Ma i tempi di realizzazione erano stretti, quindi non potevo affidare l’ideazione ai creativi, concettualmente troppo lontani per cavarsela rapidamente. Cosa sia stato ad attirarmi verso le arti visive non l’ho mai saputo, ma il mio amore per il disegno ha l’età dei miei primi ricordi. Ecco perché ho sempre pensato che esista un talento, una tendenza innata in ogni persona: c’è chi non la conosce, c’è chi la conosce e fa un’altra cosa, e c’è chi, con grande fortuna, la conosce e la segue. È una cosa straordinaria poter seguire il proprio talento, ma... la strada non è davvero semplice, la libertà di esercitarlo è difficile da conquistare. Una complicata ragnatela di conflitti intralcia costantemente il percorso. Ho cominciato dalla pittura e sono passato alla fotografia. Nella pittura l’inserimento degli elementi che compongono un quadro sono decisamente casuali e non previsti, ovvero, esiste un progetto, quindi un’espressione della conoscenza derivante dalla propria cultura, dal proprio ambiente e dalla necessità di comunicare. In realtà il contenuto vero sarà poi la somma di tutti gli elementi contenuti e raccolti mano a mano che l’opera si sviluppa in quella fase di “meditazione” che rende indipendente il proprio pensiero cosciente, dell’azione liberata sulla tela.

Così accade di dipingere oggetti, azioni, forme che non si è in grado di comprendere o addirittura non si leggono, poi un giorno si passa davanti alla tela, si torna indietro, si guarda meglio, e si scopre il contenuto o il perché di ogni cosa e, in alcuni casi, fatti accaduti, posso anche parlare sicuramente di premonizione. Insomma la pittura per me è uno straordinario stato interiore che tuttavia sento troppo lenta per tutto quello che voglio esprimere. Di qui il passaggio alla fotografia, una ricerca più allargata, dotata di fasi separate di azione, di analisi, un’arte in cui si scopre la capacità di trasmissione del momento catturato oltre ogni limite. Voglio dire: mi è capitato una volta di fare un restauro di fotografie di mio padre dal ‘40 al ‘50: quando ci si avvicina alle immagini (istantanee, niente di più) per ritoccare le mani, la comunicazione della persona è nella posizione delle mani, ed è qui che si percepisce lo stato di felicità, difficoltà o imbarazzo, mentre negli occhi la fatica,

l’amore, la gioia, e ogni attimo di storia, stava chiuso nei vestiti, nei paesaggi, negli errori di inquadratura. Facili da leggere 60 anni più tardi! In quella circostanza ho capito molte più cose di quello che mi sia sempre stato raccontato. Le istantanee sono l’elemento casuale che nel tempo rivelano l’essenza delle cose. La fotografia inoltre spazia in ogni campo, serpeggia tra la personalità, gli oggetti, le case, i paesi, e questo permette a una persona “giocattolona” e curiosa come me di godere dell’opera, di cambiare quando è annoiata. Ho fatto del mio talento un lavoro, la mia capacità e conoscenza l’ho usata per trasmettere messaggi che gli imperatori di oggi, le aziende, chiedono di trasmettere, altro ruolo, diverso, questo della mia professione o ricerca personale, ma anche un ulteriore arricchimento usando il lavoro stesso.

Nel lavoro purtroppo succede che ti chiedono una specializzazione, la stessa noia mortale (ammazza-creatività) che esiste in pittura quando un gallerista ti chiede di dipingere solo alberi, o solo in rosso, o solo cubi, ma mai, mai un altro soggetto, perché la critica, il mercato, va in confusione, lo rifiuta. Perché non l’ho mai capito, però è vero: l’affermazione di un pittore sul mercato, facile e veloce, è garantita dalla continuità dei propri soggetti, quella di un fotografo dalla specializzazione: è la stessa cosa. Si ottengono risultati importanti, è vero, ma è oltremodo noioso, spesso ci si ripete mentalmente, dentro la perfezione manca il messaggio. Quando un fotografo inizia la propria carriera, per aver fotografato bene un paio di mutande e aver concorso al successo dell’azienda, è destinato a subire incessanti richieste da parte di tutti i fabbricatori di mutande, diventerà specializzato e conoscerà presto di che giro, quali elastici, quale mercato o colori sono più vendibili. Questo fotografo potrà essere anche molto soddisfatto, e per fortuna esisterà pure, ma questo fotografo non sono io. La mia è sempre stata una battaglia costante nell’evitare etichettature che ho pagato con la lentezza del mio successo.

Amo la ritrattistica ed il magico contatto che esprime attraverso l’obiettivo. Il soggetto se ne sta lì, completamente nudo di fronte a te e chiunque sia, la paura, la timidezza, l’eccitazione, il contrasto tra l’essere e il voler apparire si mette in grande movimento, impazzisce, e solo quando tutto converge in un milione di fotoni che chiudono l’azione il soggetto rientra in se stesso. Questo è un rapporto tra il soggetto ritratto e la fotografia, per lui rappresentata dal fotografo ma a cui il fotografo è estraneo e assiste il passaggio con un pensiero indipendente da ogni

giudizio, l’unica a giudicare è la pellicola. In pratica è vero che la fotografia come credono molti popoli ruba l’anima, è vero che il soggetto si sente giudicato, ma non è assolutamente vero che sia il fotografo a giudicarlo, a rubare l’anima. Intrigante situazione anche per un’istantanea, il ritratto è una fotografia che amo davvero.

La fotografia di interni: è la fotografia più difficile tecnicamente, che comporta ampie conoscenze tecniche, attenzioni complesse, capacità di interpretazioni filosofiche. E’ tra i più complicati esempi di fotografia, a conoscenza di pochi. Mi piace quando fotografo un arredamento ricostituito in studio, immagino la personalità di chi lo abita. Quando mi commissionano le foto di un arredamento non ne faccio mai una questione di gusto personale mio, piuttosto penso alla persona a cui piacerebbe abitare così, penso attraverso molti servizi fotografici alle varie case così diverse che ho visto, scoperto e conosciuto, tutte abitate da persone straordinarie, così riesco a fotografare qualsiasi arredamento con contenuto, qualità e passione rinnovata.

La fotografia di moda: straordinaria, il mio primo amore. Come il ritratto trasmette la storia, la conoscenza filtrata da un mondo ricco di artisti, di qualità, di ricerca di tutto quello che l’uomo è capace di concepire e creare. Finanziata dal grande pubblico che, attraverso la moda esprime le proprie passioni, consensi e dissociazioni, è sicuramente l’ambiente più ricco di menti, un ambiente nel quale l’umanità riflette i propri contrasti. Putting it briefly, painting for me is an extraordinary interior state that all things considered I feel is too slow for all the things I want to express. When I receive a The photography of interiors: is technically the most difficult photography,which requires a wide technical furnishing commission I never make it a question of personal knowledge, complex attention, the capacity for philosophic interpretations. It is among the most complitaste, instead I think about the person who would enjoy livcated photography and known to only a few. I like it when I photograph furnishings set up in the studio, I ing like this, I think of all the many photographic shoots in all the various different houses that I have seen, discovered and got to know, where the most remarkable people live, so I manage to photograph any type of furnishing with renewed content, quality and passion.

Fashion photography: fantastic, my first love. Like portraits it transmits a story, knowledge filtered by a world rich in artists, quality and research into everything that man is capable of conceiving and creating. Financed by a great public which, through fashion expresses its own passions, consensus and dissociation it is certainly the richest environment of brains, an environment in which humanity reflects its contrasts.

Made up of appearances, fashion frivolity hides the most important of messages. The knowledge of this makes it a difficult environment to work in. It needs to be faced with great maturity (or recklessness) but only at very high levels is this expressed, there’s no middle road, when lowered it immediately becomes banal.

Architecture, the great manipulator of territory, with which it has a lot in common, larger and poorer, with its furrows, deep in history, it eludes our longevity. Photography has the difficult task of giving back volume and emotions. Nature and landscapes seem to escape every rule, everything is there as it always was, you can’t help being stupefied and you take a photo. Taken for granted but unrepeatable, photography in which you feel the most impotent, I use it as a cure, a very good cure to bring myself down to size. Photojournalism has had some of the greatest names, perhaps the very best. It really is photography with a capital ‘P’, made up of snapshots and instinct. Fantastic, but I’ve never done it, certain things you only learn with age. In my next life I must remember photojournalism.

When I’m taking photographs I’m always out of touch with what is going on, as if it were in a film, no less. A scene can provoke dizziness, behind the camera this doesn’t happen to me. I was on a shoot for a calendar in the Mauritius islands, the project of this photo was to fuse the image of models with physiques bearing a close resemblance to deer, I wanted to associate this nature to the running deer. Deer in the Mauritius are free and are fearful of man. It was by no means an easy project to carry out. We positioned the model on a rock, raised off the ground, in order to get a good landscape setting and to encourage the approach of the deer. If the model’s position could be considered uncomfortable, mine was tragic: sitting just the right distance on marshy ground covered in a black cloth I only had to remain immobile, totally immobile, and wait for the beaters to drive the herd of deer towards the model’s rock. Well, the

wait lasted two hours, two hours immobile under a black cloth with the boiling sun overhead, insects creeping and crawling all over my body.

For two hours I didn’t move a finger, until the herd had passed. I suffer from the heat, I’m even afraid of it, I don’t really hit it off with insects, but at that moment it wasn’t important, I stayed behind my camera and nothing could have distracted me. When I finally got up I was a walking zoo. I wouldn’t do this for all the money in the world but for a photograph – yes, and this is what’s incredible.

To succeed you also need a fair amount of luck, favourable circumstances, people who love you. I owe a lot to my wife who has always been at my side, and put up with me, to her extraordinary talent, intuition, great philosophy and it is to her I owe by cultural development and capacity to believe. I also owe much to my brother, always in the shadows: he is my right hand whose incredible technical skills always make everything work. He has been a key person to my success. Collaborators and clients have come and gone through my life with a positive average, and my thanks go to those too. Without these lucky incentives my talent would have been a joke that no one laughs at. I hope I will be able

Scatena davvero rabbia riconoscere in troppa gente l’ignoranza di chi, forte di essere indigeni, abitanti classici dei vari “Bar Sport” o altri spazi sterili fatti di discorsi superficiali, spesso abituati per primi a vivere dei contributi più svariati, finisce per considerare lo straniero di pelle diversa un pericolo in sé per sé. Extracomunitari in cerca di lavoro, disperati ed eroici personaggi che si allontanano a tasche vuote affrontando un viaggio disperato di più o meno probabile riuscita, sono solo alla ricerca di un mondo migliore, spesso di un’illusione, vengono da Paesi poveri o peggio, da Paesi dove quattro fanatici consumano le armi che, i Paesi più “progrediti” come il nostro gli vendono liberamente con lo stile inconfondibile della mano che dà e della mano che prende (sono due mani diverse sotto la stessa bandiera e non scambiano mai i ruoli.

Fotografare è un’arte. Oggi tutti fotografano, ma certamente non tutti sono artisti.

Artista non è quello che registra alla rinfusa il mondo che ha intorno, ma è chi sa cogliere nel caos forme, luci, prospettive, dimensioni. Come lo scultore che “vede” in un blocco di pietra l’opera che verrà, senza esitazione. Ed è questo che Maurizio fa: con un colpo d’occhio volumi, colore, illuminazione prendono ordine, si fanno immagine e la macchina fotografica inquadra in modo sicuro. Non ci si può spostare è così e basta, per chi usa la fotocamera come se fosse la propria mano. “Fotografare

è trattenere il respiro” è farsi tutt’uno con l’immagine, al punto di non respirare più e poi lasciare andare tutto, nello scatto finale. Così la fotografia si fa immagine, comunicazione, scrittura automatica. E’ come se la macchina avesse vita propria, animata da una grande passione, da una grande forza, da un grande amore, mai soddisfatta del risultato.

Credo comunque che una delle cose più belle sia il fatto che Maurizio non abbia mai sottovalutato nessuna immagine: tutte sono vissute con grande tensione nonostante gli anni di infaticabile esercizio, anni ricchi

Photography is an art. Today everybody take photos, and of course not just artists. An artist is not someone who simply snaps the world around him but someone who knows how to capture, in the midst of chaos, forms, light, perspective, dimensions: just as a sculptor “sees” at once in a block of stone what his work will become. This is what Maurizio does. With the briefest glance, volumes, colour, and illumination set themselves in order, become an image, and the camera only has to snap them. But the camera cannot move because whoever uses the camera does so as though it were a part of himself.

“To take a photo is like holding your breath”, it is a matter of becoming one with the image, of no longer breathing and of then letting yourself go in the final shot. This is how photography becomes image, communication, automatic writing. It is as though the camera had a life of its own, one animated by a tremendous passion, a great force, a great love, never satisfied by the final outcome.

But I think, anyway, that one of the most beautiful things is the fact that Maurizio has never underestimated any image: all have been experienced with a magnetic tension despite all the years he has spent exercising his profession: These have been years overflowing with experience, and this experience has made him free. Free to express himself, almost as though he were at play but, of course, with the steadiest hand and eye. Being a real artist, he has never bothered about the convenience of being convenient: he has only ever aimed at excellence, and this only happens by following the simplest path.

With Maurizio photography becomes a vision, an intuition; it is a way of forgetting himself in order to become sheer emotion, pure poetry.

E’ difficile tracciare un confine tra fotografia commerciale, della comunicazione e fotografia d’arte. Difficile perché nell’arte in generale si annidano oggi messaggi confusi che confondono l’arte con la trovata eccentrica, o rivoltante, provocatoria. Ognuno di questi strumenti, eccentrico e provocatorio, può facilmente essere utilizzato per l’arte, ma lo ritengo uno strumento per creare soltanto visibilità, far aprire gli occhi, da un punto di vista artistico, di animo secondario. Non si può sfuggire fotografia e video usando alla stessa maniera la necessità di alcuni uomini di esprimersi attraverso alla legge di trasferire il proprio pensiero, conoscenza e credo all’immal’arte dell’immagine. Mediata e contrattata da noi che operiamo attivamente nella comunicazio- gine, comunque sia la commissione.A volte Io leggo nelle pubblicità il dissenso dal prodotto pubblicizzato, oscuro al salotto del committente, si infiltra come un contromessaggio subliminale, serpeggia controcorrente beffandosi del committente. In pubblicità spesso ci viene chiesto di pubblicizzare un prodotto fatto dello stesso contenuto ma di diversa etichetta, personalmente dissento da questo modo di concepire il commercio, tanto ingannevole quanto legale, quando vado nei supermercati sono il primo ad essere imbarazzato dalla scelta di un prodotto, forse uguale sotto diverse etichette.

Come potrei fare a non trasmettere questo a chi guarda e al tempo stesso concepire il lavoro come deve sempre essere sentito?

La prima regola nella fotografia commerciale è quella di considerare che non esistono prodotti brutti e/o negativi in genere, che ogni prodotto ha una sua storia, un suo senso, un suo essere bello, un’anima (alcune eccezioni lo possono confermare!), prima di tutto si deve trovare il lato giusto, senza questa base, meglio rinunciare al lavoro. Naturalmente capita spesso che ci si ritrovi davanti a soggetti, vestiti, oggetti, situazioni che ci sono incomprensibili, sgradevoli, lontani dalla propria maniera di essere, il puro artista in genere rifiuta questo soggetto, oggi ne ha facoltà. Credo sia qui la chiave di volta della mia idea sull’arte, frutto della solitudine provata quando dipingevo, della lontananza dalla realtà che mi privava della capacità di vivere problemi, gioie e dolori dei miei contemporanei, che mi vietava di comunicare quello che io sentivo necessario comunicare. L’artista puro rifiuta ogni pensiero, ogni oggetto, ogni concetto che non rientri nella propria sfera, nel proprio pianeta.

Il confronto che io invece ho privilegiato, è il confronto costante con tutto, ciò che mi è vicino, e ciò che mi è lontano, idee, fatti e logiche diverse dalle mie.

Mi sono prima di tutto costruito una tecnica di resistenza che mi permette di non fuggire di fronte a soggetti scabrosi, differenziandomi anche da fotografi puri commerciali, che non da meno dei puri artisti ma in asse contrari, rifiutano soggetti non adeguati alle loro capacità e competenze nel lavoro, creando la cosiddetta specializzazione. Non si paga poco il rifiuto di questo meccanismo che coinvolge anche l’arte più in generale, la specializzazione è richiesta a gran voce da critici e galleristi, che pretendono di imbrigliare la 186

It’s difficult to trace the border line between commercial photography, communication and art photography. Difficult because art today, generally nurtures bewildering messages which confuse art with eccentric, revolting or provocative ideas. Everyone of these instruments, eccentric or provocative, might easily be used for art, but I only consider it an instrument for creating visibility, which will open people’ eyes artistically to a secondary soul. The primary characteristic of art’s force is the force of communication, the desire for beauty, a spiritual search, a spirit leaping into the future.

In art. the fascination of photography is the capacity of giving space, at today’s modern speed, to artists who are of great standing although perhaps not necessarily great painters, I myself moved from

painting to photography for logistic reasons, to be able to keep in contact with a society that no longer has the time to wait, an avid and consumerist society even where images are concerned. Photography’s strong point in this present century and the reason why it has currently become extremely popular is that it has become a pictographic language which is extremely fast, intuitive and has a significant impact factor. I don’t mean to say that it is no longer worth anything, saying so I would offend all my great artist friends, it is just that it completely falls short of its primary aim, communication.

If, before the 20th century, anyone wanting to communicate messages of power, love or terror to the masses resorted to pictures and illustrations, after the 20th century the same communication was entrusted to new means, photography and video, which have become extraordinary instruments of communication as were the great temples and churches with their frescoes evoking heaven and hell, or the palaces with paintings of great battles and portraits of those in power, drawings of conquered lands and witches burnt at the stake.

All these forms of art had, for centuries, been sponsored by financing and backing from those with power, those in power, not so very much different from the present day, where the new regnant, industry, commissions, in a more or less enlightened manner, new images with graphics, photography and video, thereby still using the necessity of some men to express themselves through the art of pictures. Mediated and handled by those of us who actively operate in advertising, photography manifests itself in its new form of communication and art, with very recognizable boundaries to those of us who do not live in the influential world of celebrative and deviant car showrooms that manage to create illusions that inhibit both growth and evolution. It often happens that over time, while shooting, a positive and encouraging atmosphere is created, however it happens even more often that it turns into falsity, becoming a clique of compliments between the stylist, art-buyer, set assistants and clients, enough to distract even the most concentrated of photographers! It is exactly this sort of climate that brings inconsistency and banality to the job, a job which is destined to have the road to success guaranteed by whoever was present on that exalting day, but immediately condemned thereafter by whoever was not present at the shoot, by whoever judges and promotes or doesn’t promote the outcome, but looks at the photograph with his own eyes.

I, personally, prefer to keep my distance from these pre-festivities, the risk of getting involved is too high a price to pay. I would even go as far to say that this national selfcelebratory habit is one of the components that has led to a downfall in the public image of not only Italian photography but, above all, the Italian cinema.

Inebriated by easy and apparent success, no one ever considers the question of whether they have reached the maximum of their capacity, without confrontation, without thought, without effort. This state exists, but it is fruit of the immensely heavy and humble daily work, that through experience, allows us to gain access to skills, where it is no longer the light, no longer the time, where every choice is no longer choice but rigorously and exclusively the product of deep seated intuition.

If I were a magnate, or wanted to set up an art collection, today, even as a pure investment, it wouldn’t even cross my mind to invest my money is oil paintings. My partner has been a determining factor in the important changes in my life, with her philosophy, morals, cooking. I have, therefore, amalgamated by great passion for photography with my love of manual work, my wife’s enthusiasm for furnishing, my brother’s enormous technical skills, and my son’s creative ideas, with all the abilities and talents encountered that have brought to life a studio which on the one hand has blocked my artistic tendencies but on the other has brought me life and joy, and in which I am absolutely convinced that I have given the maximum of my talents.

I’ve worked a lot in the creation of communication for classic furniture, even though many of the subjects were disagreeable, lacking in style and design, but to interpret them I always thought about all those characters I ’ve met throughout my career, writers, poets, artists, politicians, businessmen or others, great and positive writers who lived immersed in classicism, among the worst types of furniture you could ever imagine. These characters lived in houses where the Louis Philippe desk, the Luigi XV chair, the 20th century dresser, the pink and pale blue wallpaper and the 18th century coffee cups were in abundance, and yet I was fascinated by their knowledge to which they dedicated their lives. I thought about their personalities that emanated in their houses, rendering every corner beautiful and rich in content, by doing this I was able to get involved in the photographic composition which came alive and was animated with personality. It would be untrue to say that this system could work with everyone, sometimes the client or someone on his behalf had their own ideas, but in this case I changed roles, I transformed myself into the assistant, ready to learn everything there was to be learned, and if there was nothing to be learned I gave my brain a holiday, sometimes even this is necessary.

Oggi il mio studio vive in questo spazio, cerca la sua dimensione in un open space creato per favorire la comunicazione, facilitare la velocità di informazione e di ricerca.

Uno spazio costruito all’insegna della flessibilità e all’utilizzo multiplo degli ambienti.

Conta circa 25 creativi (non abbiamo incarichi che possiamo considerare diversi) che sostengono lo sviluppo di un lavoda molte persone che lavora con noi da parecchi decenni, in un’atmosfera che cerca di essere familiare. E le persone che lo componro di qualità. E devo dire con orgoglio gono si sono selezionate non solo per la qualità, ma anche per la capacità di superare difficoltà che naturalmente insorgono a periodi, che si tratta di un gruppo che lavora tra alti e bassi, tra crisi ed espansioni, in un mercato difficile, fatto anche di istituzioni e leggi che non facilitano certo strutture come noi, sodo anche perché gode di un amstrutture che rappresentano il cuore pulsante dell’economia nazionale. Con la passione nata con la pittura e perpetrata con la fotografia, Maurizio Marcato da sempre rivela la sua personale interpretazione del mondo delle immagini, attraverso una visione filtrata del quotidiano, dove la realtà assume sempre nuovi significati.

Considera la fotografia un mezzo altamente creativo per sperimentare continuamente nell’ambito della comunicazione visiva; per questo motivo, nel 1979 intraprende la carriera di fotografo professionista.

Successivamente da Schio (VI) si trasferisce a Verona dove apre uno studio fotografico finalizzato alla creazione di immagini pubblicitarie e industriali. Un’occasione che gli permette di intraprendere la sua personale ricerca nell’immaginario visivo, di curiosare, giocare con forme e colori, rivisitare concetti, vestendoli di nuovi significati. Ama il lavoro manuale, tagliare, dipingere, circondarsi di invenzioni.

Dal 1986 collabora con diverse riviste, soprattutto testate che si occupano della gestione di spazi architettonici, di immagine e design. È docente di fotografia presso la

With the passion born with painting and perpetuated with photography, Maurizio Marcato has always revealed his own personal interpretation of the world of images,through a filtered vision of daily life, where reality continually takes on new meanings.

He considers photography a highly creative means of experimentation in the world of visual communication; for this reason, in 1980 he embarked on the career of professional photographer.

Later he transferred to Verona where he opened a photographic studio with the aim of creating images for advertising and industry. An occasion which gave him the opportunity to undertake his personal research into visual imagery, to investigate, play with shapes and colors, re-examine concepts, giving them new meanings.He loves working with his hands, cutting, painting, surrounding himself with inventions.

Since 1986 he has been collaborating with several magazines, mostly concerned with

the use of architectural spaces, image and design.

The didactic commission of the Milan Polytechnic Faculty in Design invited him to lecture on the degree course in Fashion Design, the CI Laboratory of Design “Production of images for Industrial Design” from the academic year 2004.

In the “Orvieto Photography 2005” , annual appointment with the international professional photography, Maurizio Marcato received the ‘Certificazione di Qualità Professionale Ad Honorem’ (QIP – Qualified Italian Photographer – Italian Professional Qualification) for his technical and artistic capacities.

In the “Orvieto Fotografia 2006”, received various mentions as: Special mention portrait photography - Portraits category, two special mentions; Bronze award press photography - Reportage Category, two bronze awards and two special mentions; Bronze award commercial photography

- Category Commercial Photography, bronze award.

In 2007 at the ”International Photography Awards” Maurizio Marcato has received seven mention for the categories: Architecture Interiors/ Building/ Historic/ Landscapes, People / Portrait, Fine Art/ Nudes, Nature/ Trees.

Maurizio Marcato is an extremely versatile photographer, continually active even at an international level. Many of his projects in fact have been realized in Japan and the United States. His interests range from reportage to portraits, from architecture to landscapes from art photography to research.

And this everlasting research has led him to conceive a far wider vision of the concept concerning communication.

III Millennium was founded in 1994, an agency which sees a further development in public relations by means of a consolidated international network, organization of events and a consultancy service aimed at improving the image of its company clients.

During the same period the Black & White project was also set up, this name represents the introduction of a vast on-line photographic archive accumulated from the travels and vast experience of Maurizio Marcato.

And now MiMA, the latest project, result of a far-sighted idea. A new reality that aims to exploit the communication experience, sustaining cultural initiatives, promoting exhibition projects dedicated to image and communication at an international level.

Maurizio Marcato è un fotografo poliedrico, sempre attivo anche 215

a livello internazionale. Molti i progetti realizzati tra il Giappone e gli Stati Uniti.

I suoi interessi spaziano dal reportage al ritratto, dall’architettura alla paesaggistica fino alle foto d’arte e di ricerca. E la continua ricerca ha portato a concepire una visione più ampia del concetto di comunicazione.

Nasce nel 1994 III Millennium, agenzia che vede un ulteriore sviluppo delle public relations attraverso il consolidamento di un network internazionale, organizzazione eventi e servizi di consulenza volti al miglioramento dell’immagine delle aziende clienti.

Nello stesso periodo parte il progetto Black & Light, il marchio che sigla la nascita di un vasto archivio fotografico on line raccolto dai viaggi e dall’esperienza di Maurizio Marcato.

E poi MiMA, l’ultimo progetto frutto di un pensiero lungimirante. È una nuova realtà che si pone l’obiettivo di valorizzare l’esperienza della comunicazione, sostenendo iniziative culturali, promuovendo progetti espositivi dedicati all’immagine e alla comunicazione a livello internazionale.
