Beyond Our Walls ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Beyond Our Walls Trinity Experiences the Democratic National Convention Through Its “Extended Hallways in Uptown, Charlotte From observing peaceful demonstrations on a variety of issues to learning convention vocabulary through a personal tour of the Time-Warner Arena to discussing healthy lifestyle habits with Olympic athletes and more, students experienced this historic week-long event first-hand.

Mission Statement

Trinity Episcopal School is committed to the breadth of the Episcopal tradition in both its unity and diversity. A student of Trinity Episcopal School is challenged to academic excellence while honored as an individual with unique potential. As faculty and families together influence young lives, students themselves will be affirmed as ambassadors of grace, citizens who live and teach an ethic of service and respect for others. A student of Trinity Episcopal School is trained in the example of Christ and toward a stewardship of healthy body, lively soul and discerning mind.

12 13 Letter from the

Head of School As I reflect on the 2012-13 school year, I so appreciate that as a school we seek to provide the best educational experiences for our students, and we do not allow logistics or inconvenience to stand in the way of great learning opportunities. This school year was certainly no exception. With the unique occasion of the Democratic National Convention only a few blocks away, we intentionally kept school on a normal schedule so faculty, staff and students would have many opportunities for serendipitous learning throughout the convention week. Additionally, Tim Wise’s visit was a highlight of the year as our school community heard from and interacted with this dynamic author, and we were pushed to consider new ideas around white privilege and inclusivity. The school year also included the reorganization of Lower School and Middle School with the respective division head focusing on all elements of our mission while having fewer students and faculty to guide. This has been especially helpful in allowing the middle school to more fully form it’s own identity and strengthen policies, practices and procedures which help our sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders better prepare for high school. For the first time, the eighthgrade seminar students were asked to identify a social issue that they cared deeply about and were required to become experts on pending legislation in Congress in preparation for our annual trip to Washington D.C.

Moreover, an Honor Pledge was established in the Middle School as a means of bringing clarity to our expectations of students and to build upon our culture of honor and integrity in more distinct ways. Last year was also the first time our middle school students took the Mission Skills Assessment which measures teamwork, creativity, ethics, resilience, curiosity and time management, all crucial indicators of success in school and in life. The financial commitment of our donors helps to provide these types of opportunities for our students and so much more. 2012-13 marked the Trinity Fund’s strongest year: we celebrated the first “Light the Fire” grant recipients, and the Class of 2013 became the first class to have 100% participation in the Trinity Fund. In the spring we also hosted the largest Grandfriends’ Day in the School’s history. I am constantly aware of how blessed our school community is to have this kind of commitment from parents, grandparents, alumni and friends, and I am grateful that we continue to work together to build upon the solid foundation that has been established to make Trinity one of the best K-8 schools in the nation. With gratitude,

Tom Franz

Letter from the Chair

Board of Trustees My wife, Susan, and I still vividly remember the Trinity Admissions Open House we attended some 11 years ago. Listening to the presentation led by founding Head of School Smokey Oats, we were struck immediately by the powerful, unique mission established for Trinity by its founders – creating scholars, nurturing spirituality and embracing diversity. We were drawn by Trinity’s signature service learning program and its commitment to educating and developing the whole child. It was apparent even in those early days that Trinity was a very special place. As of this writing, we are the proud parents of one Trinity alumnus and a current Trinity middle schooler. As a parent and as Chair of Trinity’s Board of Trustees, I can tell you with confidence that the unique mission and spirit that drew our family 11 years ago is alive and well today, The Honorable David C. Keesler, Chair Philip C. Colaco, Treasurer Elizabeth G. Hobbs, Secretary Robert J. Miller, Past Chair Robert R. Anders, Jr. The Reverend Kevin Brown Ann Blakeney Clark Mary Anne Dickson Martha M. only stronger. Now in its second decade, Trinity is living more fully than ever into its mission under the leadership of Tom Franz, Father Smokey’s very able successor as Head of School. Trinity is blessed to have a gifted and devoted faculty, a passionate and engaged parent community, and a diverse and talented student body. At the close of the 2012-2013 school year, Trinity had graduated 389 extraordinary young people – young people who are not just promising scholars, but are also ambassadors of grace. Our current Trustees are honored to follow in the footsteps of our predecessors as stewards of the unique mission and purpose of this place. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your generous financial support of this exceptional school. Because of you, our dedicated faculty and John F. FitzHugh Claudia F. Light the Fire

Trinity Fund Celebration

Because of the generosity of our parents, grandparents, trustees, alumni, alumni parents, faculty/staff and friends of Trinity, the Trinity Fund surpassed its financial goal for 2012-13. Your gifts honor our faculty & staff and allow us to create opportunities to further Trinity’s mission - opportunities like our Light the Fire Grant. We hosted more than 100 parents, faculty and staff for our second annual Light the Fire event. We celebrated the success and impact of the Trinity Fund, highlighted our 2012 Light the Fire grant recipients and announced the 2013 grant recipients. Our 2013 grant recipients: Jessica Masanotti, Communications & Alumni Relations Manager (Telling Stories Through Photography, California); Megan Postle, K-8 Music Director (“Which Way to the Stage?” A Broadway Experience, New York); Mandy Rencher, Gr. 4 Teacher, (Can You Dig It? National Geographic Expedition, Midwest, US).
