2013-14 Annual Report of Giving
our mission Trinity Episcopal School is committed to the breadth of the Episcopal tradition in both its unity and diversity. • A student of Trinity Episcopal School is challenged to academic excellence while honored as an individual with unique potential. • As faculty and families together influence young lives, students themselves will be affirmed as ambassadors of grace, citizens who live and teach an ethic of service and respect for others. • A student of Trinity Episcopal School is trained in the example of Christ and toward a stewardship of healthy body, lively soul and discerning mind.
Creating Scholars, Nurturing Spirituality, Embracing Diversity in Charlotte’s Center City Trinity Episcopal School admits students of any race, color, religion, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational and admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
Letter from the Head of School Thank you for your interest in Trinity Episcopal School’s 2013-14 Annual Report. As you peruse this document, I hope you will join me in reflecting and celebrating the wonderful school year we had at Trinity. This remarkable year was due to the incredible work of our faculty and staff, the stewardship of the Board of Trustees and the commitment of our donors. I am grateful to all who play a role in delivering this incredible educational experience for our students and families. The terrific energy and enthusiasm for school continues to be a hallmark of the Trinity experience. Our student body filled our classrooms with the largest enrollment in school history with 427 students. In addition to having record enrollment, our admission funnel is strong, with more than two applications for every available place in kindergarten. I am grateful to be in a school where the current challenges in admission is not how are we going to fill a class or grade level. Enthusiasm for the school was also noticeable at Grandfriends’ Day, at Wildcat Summer Camp and in annual giving with record numbers for each of these.
Under Cristina Warlick’s leadership, the Parents’ Association Leadership Team and parent volunteers did incredible work supporting our teachers, students and administration. Moreover, Parents’ Association funding helped support special programs and projects including our Poet-in-Residence, the Museum of Math exhibit and our new playground. I want to thank Cristina, PALT and the parent volunteers for their service without which we would not be able to deliver our mission so effectively to our students. Please pay special attention to our financials on page 8. I am aware that how we fund the school’s mission may be unclear to some. Simply put, tuition and fees only cover about 88% of what we need in order to provide a Trinity education to all of our students. Trinity would not look or feel the same without additional revenue from other sources, specifically, financial donations and money we draw from our endowment. Each of these is critical to the financial sustainability of our school and our ability to deliver our mission. I want to offer special thanks to all of you who have contributed so generously to ensure that we are able to provide this exceptional educational experience for our students and families.
The gratitude and enthusiasm for this special In keeping with our commitment to be a resource school was also evident in the Trinity Fund where donors boosted annual giving beyond $500,000. for the Charlotte community, we launched the This testament from parents, grandparents and Trinity Teaching and Learning Center during the friends is indicative of our collective devotion summer of 2013. The TTLC was developed as a vehicle for our faculty to share their expertise with to our mission and core values. Many thanks to Elizabeth Kiser and the Development Committee, other teachers and administrators from around Margaret and Angus McBryde, who served as the city, state and region. In its inaugural year, Trinity Fund Co-Chairs, and the grade level parent we had 61 teachers from CMS and independent Ambassadors for their work in achieving this schools from across the state on campus for important milestone, which ensures the fiscal training in our approach to balanced literacy. I health of our school. would like to thank Chris Weiss and her team of teachers for their vision and energy in launching this program in such a successful manner.

I am grateful for the service and leadership of the Board of Trustees, especially David Keesler who served in his second and final year as Chair. David and the Board implemented several processes and procedures that will serve the Board well in the future. Additionally, the Board began planning for our future by kicking off a strategic planning process that will result in a plan that will guide our work for the next five years. For such a young school, we are blessed to have such a high functioning Board of Trustees, who are so united in serving our unique mission. I would be remiss if I did not express my profound appreciation to Trinity’s teachers and staff for their incredible work with children each day. The foundation of any school is the faculty, and at Trinity this amazing group of professionals is the heart and soul of our School. Their expertise, passion, dedication and professionalism largely determine the quality of the school experience for children. I appreciate their tireless devotion to their students and to their craft of teaching in the most effective manner. With gratitude,
Tom Franz Head of School
Letter from the Chair of the Board of trustees As I write this letter, the Board of Trustees and the senior staff at Trinity are engaged in a Strategic Planning process that will yield a new five-year plan for the future of this special school. We are addressing the question of how our community will commit in new ways to living out our unique mission of creating scholars, nurturing spirituality, and embracing diversity over the next five years. As we strive to make our school community even better, we are being reminded in this process of all we have to be grateful for in who we already are. I had the pleasure recently of moderating a Strategic Planning listening session for a small group of faculty members. I have always been impressed by our faculty, but I came away from this session profoundly impacted. To a person, they were extremely bright, invested in kids and teaching excellence, deeply passionate about the school’s unique mission in education, and truly committed to each other’s personal and professional success. Trinity has many special features, but its extraordinary faculty may be its crown jewel. I came away overwhelmed with gratitude for what these talented, committed teachers are doing for our kids. As a parent, and as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I can tell you with confidence that the unique mission and spirit that moved our founders to create this special school are alive and well today. Now well into its second decade, Trinity is living more fully than ever into its mission under the leadership of Head of School Tom Franz and his senior administrative team. Trinity is blessed by the gifted faculty I have mentioned, but also by a talented and committed Board of Trustees, a passionate and engaged parent community, and of course, terrific kids. At the close of the 2013-2014 school year, Trinity had graduated 444 extraordinary young people – young people who are not just promising scholars, but also ambassadors of grace.

As we are at work making this community even better, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your generous financial support of this exceptional school. Because of you, our dedicated faculty and administration continue to provide a remarkable education for our students; we remain committed to nurturing the spirituality of every child; and we continue to build a school community that reflects the rich diversity of the region we serve. Together, we are sustaining and building upon the vision of our founders for all current and future Trinity Wildcats.

“Navigating the entryway to adulthood is messy work sometimes. Helping to grow young people into adults is also difficult work, but I can imagine such a humble joy as well. I am very impressed by the sense of community our students have at Trinity, and I am grateful to our middle school students who are leading the way for our youngest of Wildcats.
