uvex’s success story began in a small workshop in Poppenreuth, now a suburb of Fürth, Germany, where company founder Philipp M. Winter handcrafted the first safety goggles in 1926. Demand for his products quickly grew beyond local laborers and craftsmen. By the 1930s he equipped athletes with ski and motorcycle goggles. As demand grew, the range of products expanded. Philipp’s son Rainer joined the company as a trainee,

and in 1958 the company was incorporated. Eyewear was sold under the Winter name, until Rainer developed the uvex brand. In the 1970s and 1980s uvex established its international reputation with the sporting success of alpine skiers wearing uvex goggles. It began selling products worldwide while continually developing the ‘protecting people’ philosophy of the brand. uvex went from safety eyewear specialist to a system provider of headto-toe safety equipment.
Through strategic partnerships, company acquisitions and attracting exceptional employees, the uvex group has continued to develop expertise. The company maintains its pioneering spirit, and innovative strength, to this day. uvex will continue to pursue our mission of protecting people with dedication and introduce innovative, new ideas as we write the next chapters of our success story.

Rainer Winter recalls establishing the uvex plant in Lederdorn, by saying, “I was looking for homeworkers in the Bavarian Forest – and came home with this factory.” This is how the uvex group’s current president describes the success story that began in 1967, with a simple mission. It has contributed to the company’s success ever since. The factory opened on June 19th 1969 with 13 workers onsite and 10 home workers, making ski, sport and diving goggles. 10 years later the world’s first ski goggle with a scratchproof polycarbonate lens was created in Lederdorn.

Aside from as equestrian helmets and ski goggles, Lederdorn also produces ski helmets like the uvex p1us pro, the lightest uvex hardshell ski helmet ever made. “The core of every helmet is the shock absorbing EPS,” explains technical manager Bernhard Schlund. “Granules impregnated with a blowing agent are pre-foamed –
up to 80 times initial volume – by heating with steam, then kept at room temperature for several hours. In the second stage the pre-foamed EPS is put into a mold and even expanded further, using more steam heating. Individual parts are fused together along the edges. Finally, the inner shell is incorporated into the outer helmet shell. The Lederdorn site not only represents more than four decades of history, it is an integral part of uvex’s “Made in Germany” philosophy. uvex has 41 subsidiaries in 22 countries – but still produces predominantly in Germany, where about 70 percent of more than 2,000 employees work.

Great powder days require great solutions, the new goggle uvex big 40
uvex big 40 is a frameless ski goggle which lets freeriders discover new ways of freedom. “We wanted to design a stylish powder goggle with an extra large field of view,” says Urban Plaggner, uvex CAD engineer. “The lens measures 40 mm from the
forehead to the bridge of the nose – this corresponds L40 on the uvex fit index.” To dispense with a classic frame design the inner lens hooks over a slot in the thermoplastic polyurethane body. The outer lens is securely bonded onto a ‘foam bead’ leaving a 3.2 mm gap.
Powder simply slides off with a single wipe of a glove or sleeve, thanks to the frameless design. A truly impressive result. Which gives you the best prospect for unforgettable days on powder.
