PROJECT MANAGEMENT THE TRAVELLING PHOTO STUDIO

The Travelling Photo Studio is a fundraising project staffed by AUCB 3rd yr Graphic Design students 2010-2011 - a mobile photo studio which is set up at local venues hosting large events, such as the 1940’s Swing for Victory charity dance evening in March 2011. Guests were invited to enter the booth area to have their photo taken for free; prints are subsequently charged at just £3.

SELF INITIATED BRIEF I CHING COMPENDIUM

Currently on display at AUCB Disperse Exhibition. The I Ching (pronounced e-jing) or Book of Changes is an ancient Chinese text containing within it an explanation of the entire laws of the universe by which all things are governed, and carries explicit directions on how man should conduct himself so as to remain continuously in harmony within these laws. This compendium (intended as an introductory study guide) can be used as a basis for meditation; as a lead for furthering ones knowledge of oneself and the universe; and for practical guidance on the everyday problems of life. The hanging tablets represent the sixty four results it is possible to obtain when consulting the I Ching. The text is an original interpretation from definitive works of Wilhelm and Karcher. Contains - Display tablets ( laser etched and cut acrylic), Guidebook (french fold, bible paper), Posters, Notebook, Coins, Pencils.


TYPOGRAPHY NATURES LETTERS


Based on ISTD brief: Not Just Fleurons, this project utilised nature as a stimulus to inform all design decisions. The letters, combining hand drawn typography, ligature styles and a grid system, contain intricate detail best viewed on a larger scale, hence the production of the wooden displays.

The brief: To design a product for Michelin which can help save lives on the side of the road. Press-Warn-Inform is a conceptual in-car device designed to communicate with cats eyes on the motorway. When pressed a signal is sent to activate the lights making them flash, warning other drivers of potential danger.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE A British Film

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British film directed by Danny Boyle, written by Simon Beaufoy, and co-directed in India by Loveleen Tandan. It is an adaptation of the novel Q & A (2005) by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup. Set and filmed in India, the film follows the tumultuous path of three slum children -- two boys and a girl; one of the boys becomes a champion in the Indian Who Wants To be a Millionaire show. But he also becomes a suspect, with the police wanting to know if the former slum kid has been cheating in the show.

Two of the child stars of Slumdog Millionaire apparently still live in abject poverty in the slums of India. Rubina and Azharuddin live a few hundreds yards from each other in a tangle of makeshift shacks alongside Mumbai’s railway tracks at Bandra. Azharuddin is in fact worse off than he was during filming: his family’s illegal hut was demolished by the local authorities and he now sleeps under a sheet of plastic tarpaulin with his father, who suffers from tuberculosis.

Slumdog Millionaire has stirred controversy concerning language use, its portrayals of Indians, Hinduism, and the welfare of its child actors.

Following its release in India, the film faced criticism from various members of the public alleging that the film fuels Western stereotypes about poverty in India and that it peddles

‘poverty

porn’. Nicholas Almeida, a social activist working in Mumbai, organized a protest against the film on the grounds that it intentionally exploited the poor for the purposes of profit, also arguing that the title is offensive, and insulting to their dignity. The protesters were Mumbai slum dwellers who objected to the film’s title and held up signs reading:

‘I am not a dog’. ‘underdog’

The film’s director, Danny Boyle said that ‘Slumdog’ was a hybrid of the word – and everything that means in terms of rooting for the underdog and validating his triumph – and the fact that he comes from the slums.

“The movie is at its heart, about aspiration, and about dreams coming true. This ‘common man’ Jamal, is not angry, like the Indian men of the 1970s. He is both hopeful and relentless, defiant and proud of his origins even as the people around him call him a ‘slumdog’. He knows better -

that it doesn’t matter where you come from, only where you are headed.”

Poverty in India is widespread with the nation estimated to have one of the

largest concentration of poor people in the world and housing a third of the world’s poor.

According to the a 2005 World Bank estimate, of India’s falls below the international poverty line. According to the criterion used by the Planning Commission of India 27.5% of the population was living below the poverty line in 2004–2005, down from 51.3% in 1977–1978, and 36% in 1993-1994. A disproportionally large share of poor are lower caste Hindus called Dalits. In many parts of India, land is largely held by high-ranking property owners of the dominant castes that economically exploit low-ranking landless labourers and poor artisans.

Environment pollution in India

“All East Indians are not filthy, but the filthiest of the world are always East Indian.” Couple this with India’s teeming population, and you see a very grave danger to planet earth and its environment. The rapidly growing population and economic development are leading to the environmental degradation in India through the uncontrolled growth of urbanization and industrialization, expansion and massive intensification of agriculture, and the destruction of forests. It is estimated that the country’s population will

by the year increase to about 2016. The projected population indicates that India will be the first most populous country in the world and China will be ranking second in the year.
