PUBLICATION DIRECTOR Nancy Nadler LeWinter
After a summer of heat, there is nothing more refreshing than the crisp fall air, and nothing better than fall fashion. Our fall issue has my favorite things... pasta, road trips, incredible beauty and fashion… and really impressive women! Meghan Trainor shows us with song and example that she owns her curves…and we should too. We have supermodels who are using their superpowers for good, and country celebs who are all trying and succeeding at things outside their comfort zones. The reality is that millenials sometimes get a bad name but, when it comes to empowerment, they truly make a profound difference in how all women are perceived.
DESIGN Herta Kriegner / über, inc.
In fashion, we separate the runway from the real way and provide wearable trends for every style and every body. In beauty, ponytails are the hottest trend and we give the how-to’s for every age. Take a risk and give it a try… I did and it looked so natural, people were having entire conversations with me not noticing my hair was 8 inches longer! See how we separate the health from the hype on probiotics, and you might just want the best new beauty treatment.

and the new Millennial Empowerment You can call millennials the ME generation, but when you’re referring to Meghan Trainor, that will stand for “millennial empowerment!” Meghan is one of the many millennials who are making a difference, often with a velvet glove that packages powerful messages as pure entertainment. Meghan gave us “All About That Bass” which has even very young girls singing along to body empowerment and loving yourself just the way you are! From her songs to her personal sensibility, Meghan is learning to love herself as a curvy girl and flaunt those curves to inspire all of us who refuse to be labeled…unless the label is FABULOUS!

Super Powers Supermodels who look incredible and do incredible things to empower women.
WANT TO USE YOUR
Every issue will feature our favorites, starting with Ashley Graham, Denise Bidot, and Candice Huffine, women who redefine beauty in their own terms.
FOR GOOD?
“This is the generation of body diversity.” ASHLEY GRAHAM Model, Designer and Body Activist, Ashley is the curve that shook the world as the first curvy girl to appear in the Sports Illustrated Calendar when she was in an ad for swimsuitsforall.com. called “Curves in Bikinis”. It was a big step for a woman and a giant step for womankind, feeling so right and looking so amazing! She has appeared in fashion magazines Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour and Latina, and most recently on the cover of Elle Quebec. Never one for status quo, Ashley wants to show that health and size are mutually exclusive concepts so she started her own line of workout web videos called ‘Curvy Fit Club’, with workouts designed to help fuller figure women stay healthy and voluptuous at the same time. “I know my curves are sexy and I want everyone else to know that theirs are too. There is no reason to hide and every reason to flaunt.”
14 FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015
SUPER POWERS To see how a few ‘supermodels’ use their superpowers, check out ALDAwomen.com, they’re challenging conventional notions in the fashion industry and promoting a more holistic view of beauty. There are also literally hundreds of organizations that empower women and girls, including individual professional organizations which mentor young people and those starting in their careers in finance, teaching, medicine, communications, politics and business, so consider volunteering. Events by organizations are also great opportunities to network… just search ‘professional organizations’ in your area of interest. Sometimes the easiest way to empower women is to make their lives a little easier, like offering rides to the senior citizen center, driving women to medical treatments, babysitting for a friend in need. And don’t forget that a simple act of kindness, a note, flowers or a small gift, makes a world of difference in making someone feel acknowledged.
“There’s No Wrong Way To Be A Woman.” DENISE BIDOT International plus-size model, TV personality and the voice and advocate for curvy women and self-love, Denise has consistently broken down preconceived notions within the fashion industry. She is the first plus-size model to walk two runways for straightsize brands, CHROMAT and Serena Williams’ HSN fashion line. On her website, Denise says that when Anna Wintour of Vogue Magazine praised her presence at the show and runway, it “truly symbolized the change of integrating all sizes within the fashion world”. Denise was also a part of Jennifer Lopez’s TV network, NUVOtv’s, “Curvy Girls,” showcasing her life as a curvy woman and model, and was featured as a mom on Yahoo! En Español. Beauty to Denise is “seen through all shapes and sizes, recognizing that being you is what defines real beauty.”
“There’s a major celebration of different ages and color and size.” CANDICE HUFFINE As the first ‘curvy’ girl to appear in the prestigious Pirelli Tire Calendar (bigger in Europe than the Sports Illustrated Calendar is here), Candice joined the ranks of the Supermodels and Hollywood actresses who have consented to appear on the calendar’s pages in the past. Well-known for its luxury and exclusivity, this year’s calendar was shot for the first time by famed photographer Steven Meisel. Candice looked fierce and fabulous, showing that the ‘road’ is more fun when it’s curved. She first made history when she appeared on the 2011 cover of Italia Vogue’s Curvy Girls, also shot by Meisel and Candice also appeared on the cover of the premier issue of our very own fullbeauty magazine and continues to inspire women, both on and off the runway. Always risk-taking in Europe and America, Candice is fast becoming an international superstar. FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015 15
Country CELEBS
WHY WE LOVE OUR
As I watched Trisha and Garth at the CMA show in April, it was clear that “She’s in Love With the Boy” and the boy worships her! It may seem like a storybook romance and it is, especially because they were friends for decades before they got married 10 years ago. Patricia Lynn Yearwood (Trisha) is true country. Born on September 19, 1964 In Monticello, Georgia, she’s lived by always following her heart. While Trisha has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide in her own right, she started as a backup singer for Garth Brooks on “No Fences” in 1990 and became his opening act in 1991. Her songs are about seemingly vulnerable but actually very confident women, and that same velvet glove has made her an extraordinarily successful singer, actress and well on her way to being the most recognizable “brand” in food and furniture.
Trisha’s success in music is powerful for both its longevity and its relevance. “She’s in Love with the Boy” was her first hit, almost 25 years ago, and it sounds just as new today. Her follow-up hits included “I’ll Still Love You More” and “I Would’ve Loved You Anyway”. In 1997, Trisha recorded the song “How Do I Live”, the soundtrack for the movie Con Air that became her signature song and won her a Grammy Award. While both Trisha and Garth dropped out of the music scene for awhile, neither could escape success...in Trisha’s case, right into the kitchen. She has already released three successful cookbooks, two of which were New York Times best-sellers and she hosts “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen” on the Food Network, for which she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Culinary Program. The show is shot in Nashville and features Trisha cooking family recipes and sharing healthy tips to enjoy lighter versions of the traditionally heavier Southern cuisine. 16 FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015
So, she had the food ready and the music playing in the background. Where to eat? Designing a furniture collection just made sense. Trisha partnered with Klaussner Home Furnishings on “A collection of inspirations that combine a warm, southern style with a classic twist for a heartfelt collection of authentic designs with form and functionality at the core of every piece.” So Trisha!
While Rayna James of the TV show “Nashville”might just remind you a bit of Trisha, it’s actually Linda Ronstadt who was her primary musical influence, and the person who Trisha is compared to most often. As Trisha says, Linda Ronstadt “had a power and an emotion in her voice that made you believe every word she sang. My favorite song was probably ‘Love Has No Pride,’ but I listened to everything over and over. I knew the albums so well I knew which song it was from the first note.” Sounds like how we feel about Trisha!
Trisha gets scrutinized for every pound gained or lost. Two years ago, she changed her eating habits and got the body she always wanted. We might resent her if she wasn’t so darn honest! Rather than giving the usual, “I’m eating better and am always satisfied”, Trisha answered the incessant question of her ‘secret diet’ with a simple, “I’m hungry!” Thank you for that!

America’s “Idol” Talk about a tight community! Country music has the nicest and nicest to each other people in the music business...that’s a club we’d all love to join! So Kelly’s husband’s stepmother is also one of her mentors, and Kelly is the guest mentor for Blake Shelton on The Voice, who was married to Miranda Lambert who looks up to both Kelly and Reba, who both love her right back. And Kelly’s baby’s first concert was Garth Brooks who’s married to Trisha who’s friends with Kelly who was on Trisha’s TV show having what else...a real country dinner. Gotta Love It!
Kelly Brianne Clarkson seems so solid country that we forget she started as a pop star. Born April 24, 1982 in Fort Worth, Texas, she is truly one of those people who did have ‘overnight success’, becoming America’s sweetheart when she won the first season of American Idol in 2002 at only 20 years old. “A Moment Like This”, her first song, broke the record for the biggest jump to number one in Billboard’s history, and her winning streak continued with “Miss Independent”. She has had a hit album every two years since then, and her fifth album, “Stronger” had “Mr. Know It All” and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)”, which became one of the best-selling singles of all time. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, making Clarkson the first and only artist to win the award twice. It also became a workout anthem, with celebs claiming it was their go-to for exercise routines. Kelly has almost 100 number ones on Billboard, has sold over 25 million albums worldwide, has three Grammys, 18 FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015
four American Music Awards, and just about every country award in existence. No surprise that her songs go from sweet romance to major female empowerment. In traditional country fashion, her life wasn’t always easy. Kelly’s parents divorced when she was five years old and the three kids were split up, Kelly with her mom, her brother with their father, and her sister with an aunt. ‘Stronger’ echoes the empowerment from life’s challenges. As she has said: “I’ve always grown up pretty close to church and with God. But I think I’ve just gotten a lot closer just because He’s the only One I can lean on.” Like Trisha, Kelly has also ventured into acting, and was an extra on several teen shows before her music success. Since then, she has appeared in American Dreams as Brenda Lee, in Reba (her mother-in-law’s hit show), on The Voice as a guest coach, and on Duets as a mentor and judge. Kelly takes control of business in the same way she does
her music. She hired talent manager Narvel Blackstock, husband of Reba McEntire and became a leader in extending into less traditional outlets, appearing in halftime shows and partnering with NASCAR. Two memorable appearances were performing Schubert’s “Ave Maria” for Pope Benedict XVI on his visit to America and performing “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” at the second inauguration of President Obama. No lip-synching...Kelly is pure talent. Kelly moved into country music in 2008 and is one of the few artists who continues to be successful on both sides of the track. She has also paired with so many country greats that she is almost as well known for her duets as her solo performances. Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Blake Shelton, Vince Gill, Jewel, and Jason Aldean are just a few of her famous collaborations. As a music talent, the accolades are truly endless. Esquire magazine wrote that Clarkson has “the best voice in the history of pop music.” Rolling Stone magazine writes that Kelly has “One of music’s most remarkable voices.” And Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine sums up Kelly’s talent best: “Kelly makes [singing] seem effortless and charming. She can croon, she can belt out a song, she can be sexy and sassy while still being graceful and as wholesome as the girl next door.” As a modern-day empowered woman (she doesn’t like the term ‘feminist’), Kelly bought a ring that had belonged to British novelist Jane Austen, often called a feminist icon because of her most famous book, Pride and Prejudice. Kelly is a fan of Austen’s work and the ring is one of only three surviving pieces of jewelry known to have belonged to the author. The British government placed an export ban on the ring owing to its historic importance, so the ring stayed in England at Jane Austen’s House Museum. Since Kelly wanted to wear the ring as her engagement ring, her then-fiancé (now husband), Brandon Blackstock, commissioned a replica of the ring for her, which she now wears. Kelly married talent manager Brandon, Reba McEntire’s stepson, on October 20, 2013 and they had their first child, a daughter, in June 2014. Big surprise,
she gained weight like any normal pregnant woman. Well, tell that to the press because they blasted her with endless criticism. No worries, she totally handled it in her nononsense fashion. As one of the classiest ladies around, when she was consistently “fat-shamed” by several television commentators, she responded, “She’s tweeted something nasty about me? That’s because she doesn’t know me. I’m awesome!” Clarkson explained. “It doesn’t bother me. It’s a free world. Say what you will. I’ve just never cared what people think. It’s more if I’m happy and I’m confident and feeling good, that’s always been my thing. And more so now, since having a family—I don’t seek out any other acceptance.” Talk about “stronger”! FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015 19
Leather & Lace She may look like a prom queen, but this petite beauty is the toughest girl in “country”. Miranda Leigh Lambert was born November 10, 1983 in Longview, Texas and got her start when she finished third on the 2003 season of Nashville Star, a short-lived TV show. She struck platinum with her first album, which included “Bring Me Down”, “Kerosene”, and “New Strings”, and her trademark girl-power lyrics are in her titles... “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, “Gunpowder & Lead”, “Automatic” and “Revolution” among others. She doesn’t just write the majority of her songs, she lives them. Daughter of a policeman and his private investigator wife, Miranda wrote “Gunpowder & Lead” while taking a concealed weapons class. As Rolling Stone magazine said, “Lambert remains country’s most refreshing act, and not just because she makes firearms seem like a matter-of-fact female accessory.” Miranda doesn’t mind the gun-toting accolades at all. She named her girl group “Pistol Annies” and one of their first songs was “Hell on Heels”. She also likes to tell the story about one of her favorite shows, “Snapped” on Oxygen, a series focused on female killers. “It’s so weird. I watched one about this woman whose husband had been beating the crap out of her for years. Finally, one day she shot him in the bedroom and shut the door—and left him there for two years. The road it happened on was County Road 233; that was where the guy gets shot in my song ‘Gunpowder and Lead’”. Does she feel responsible? She laughs, “You know, women have come up to me and said, ‘You gave me the courage to leave after 10 years of him hitting me’. That’s the best compliment I could get. But don’t shoot him, or don’t blame it on me if you do”.
20 FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015
No surprise, she’s also an avid “Law & Order: SVU” fan and, though she claims to never wanting to be an actress, she appeared in an episode about an actress who claims to have been sexually assaulted by a reality show producer. She just wanted to be on the show “so I could be a groupie.”
She’s a girl’s girl promoting makeup and a guy’s girl promoting RAM trucks, both with absolute credibility. Miranda has been honored by the Grammys, ACM’s and CMA’s, consistently broken records for most nominations and wins, and has collaborated with many of Nashville’s best artists. She’s a girl’s girl who’s been Cover Girl’s “Fresh Face of Country” and Cotton Inc.’s face in “The Touch, The Feel of Cotton” with her song “Fabric of My Life”. She’s a guy’s girl who can promote Ram trucks with absolute credibility and can keep up with the bad ole boys in hunting as well as hardcore touring with Keith Urban, George Strait, Dierks Bentley and Toby Keith. Bottom line…both Miranda and her music are multi-faceted and a velvet glove with a powerful punch. In 2011 Miranda married fellow country singer Blake Shelton. Wearing her mother’s wedding dress, Miranda and Blake exchanged vows in front of 550 family members and friends, including virtually every Nashville celebrity. The wedding had antler chandeliers, venison they killed themselves, and a wedding cake that was frosted with a leather look. They even clicked mason jars…now that’s country! Recently divorced, Miranda and Blake are committed to keeping it real in their “country” world.
Wait, there’s more. Miranda recorded a song for The Hunger Games soundtrack called “Run Daddy Run” featuring The Pistol Annies. She has a line of shoes and boots at DSW. On the softer side, Miranda has Muttnation Foundation, which betters the lives for shelter animals. Okay, think we covered the highlights, but this girl’s much deeper than her blond hair. She does it all, and all with a smile, a wink and a nod.

VICTRAN (left) has a great relaxed style and plays into her petite height (she’s 5’1”) with shorter jackets and flats. She wanted to try an edgier style.
2. YOU ARE THE PERFECT SIZE... right now! When you let go of your ‘size’ and love your shape, fashion will be fun and empowering. 3. BE KINDER TO YOURSELF: It will show in your attitude and confidence. Make sure your style communicates your idealized self.

VICTRAN’S MAKEOVER
1 Trend 2 Ways Tonal sweaters over subtle prints is one of fall’s hottest trends, and it’s not a one style fits all. Here, Victran and Crystal get the fashion and fit for their personal styles. Part of any great makeover is that the stylists need to respect each woman’s personal preferences. And any smart woman knows that, in the list of style priorities, personal comfort is as important as fit and trend. Victran appreciates her petite frame and loves wearing pants and flats. She also thought there were certain ‘rules’ for petites, and that she wouldn’t like the concept of layering. With the hi/low sweater (longer in the back) and some softly layered necklaces, Victran got a layered look that really fits her body and her sensibility. She borrowed a few tips from her daughter Laurice who came to the shoot with her. She loved her new look and the look of surprise on her daughter’s face! first look BEAUTY & HEALTH Our beauty trends come off the runway and the runaway style in everyone’s show was sleek hair, with curls and waves making a temporary exit from the building...the most seen tool-of-the-trade backstage was the flat iron. Pulled back in a pony or bundled in a bun, fall hair looks fresh and flattering. Jewelry has moved up into the hair with lots of accessories from basic to bling. As to makeup, only the seriously brave will do the smoky undereye…over the age of 25, it looks more like a hard day’s night, but the ‘winged’ eye has gone mainstream and bare nails get embellished with surprising art. The hottest ‘beauty’ trend is probiotics, getting beautiful from the inside out. Separating the health from the hype, here’s the how-to when it comes to smart ‘stomach’ spending, as well as 10 easy tips for healthy and happy. FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015 63
FALL BEAUTY
Ponytails Cristina Hendricks is a hair chameleon. While a natural blond, she has been playing with red since her teens, partly because of her obsession with Anne of Green Gables. Feeling like her “real self, she rocks red better than anyone since Rita Hayworth! She also rocks a side pony, perfecting the volume and feminine wisps around the face.
64 FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015
This classic style is no ‘onetrick pony’. We’re breaking down the best ponytail styles for every occasion, face shape and hair type.
Tousled Pony A tousled pony can elongate a rounder face shape and volumize thinner hair. Use a comb and hair spray to tousle hair by running the comb back and forth, spritzing hair spray on top and underneath strands. For a round face shape, the higher the pony the better. Secure the ponytail with an elastic at the crown of your head. If you have a square face shape and a strong jawline, soften your cheekbones by leaving out side swept bangs. QUICK TIP: Snag this look in a rush with a faux-hair ponytail elastic in your hair shade (Bonamart, $3, Amazon).
PONY
Styling TIPS Whether your pony is going to be sleek or tousled, enhance your look with a little volume. Start in the shower with a volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner (Organix Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Shampoo and Conditioner, $8 each). Next, flip your hair upside down and begin drying at roots. Then, using a round brush, lifting roots up and outward. Finally, run a volumizing mousse through strands to prep for your ponytail choice (Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse, $3).

Bun Sponge FINE HAIR PONY
If you have fine hair, the bun sponge is your new best friend. Create a ponytail at the desired height of your bun. Secure with a thin elastic. Slide the ponytail through the bun sponge and flip hair forward, spreading hair to cover the sponge. Use bobby pins to wrap excess hair around the bun and secure in place. Finally, spritz some hairspray to eliminate flyaways (Bun Sponge, $2)
BunEase comes in various hair colors and range from $4.50 to $8 at miabeauty.com
Polished / Sleek Pony The polished pony is perfect for transitioning from day to night. Get the look by combing hair into a pony, leaving a 1-inch portion of hair (about 2 fingers wide) out. Secure with a thin elastic, then wrap the spare hair around your pony, fastening with hair-colored bobby pins underneath. This look works for all face shapes, but it’s all about the height. For a round shape face, the higher the better. If you have a strong chin and a heart-shaped face, secure your pony mid-height. And if you have an oval face, take your pick! Any height pony will be flattering, but we love a sleek low pony for a night out. QUICK TIP: Snag this look in a rush with a faux-hair ponytail elastic in your hair shade. Faux hair ponytail wrap by Tonytails $8. Available at miabeauty.com

BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE OUT
Probiotics Most women spend hundreds of dollars on vitamin-infused moisturizers and “miracle” shampoos. What if I told you that the most effective and ultimately least expensive beauty regimen relies not on how you line your lips, but on how you line your digestive tract?
Probiotics, the new favorite word of celebrities, naturopaths, and MDs is showing up absolutely everywhere. This isn’t the media’s first love affair with a health trend, so how do we know whether this one is actually worth listening to? Probiotics sound like they do something good for you and, according to those Activia commercials, women everywhere are happier when they eat probiotic yogurt because of something good it does in their bellies. But what are probiotics anyway? How did they get so popular? And are their benefits to our health really as great as the experts say? Here’s the inside (and somewhat technical) scoop.
KOMBUCHA
72 FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015
KEFIR
Simply put, probiotics are bacteria. Not just any old bacteria, but the kind that’s naturally found in everyone’s digestive tract. All of us walk around with trillions of microflora, both “good” and “bad” bacteria, living in the intestines. Good bacteria helps us process food and protects against infection while bad bacteria causes inflammation, impedes our absorption of nutrients, and stresses the immune system. Probiotics get lots of well-deserved attention for their digestive benefits, but there’s more. They also create lustrous skin, hair, and boosted vitality by drastically improving the body’s absorption of nutrients.
PROBIOTIC JUICE
SUPPLEMENTS
The American Academy of Dermatology states that probiotics yield vast improvement in various skin conditions, slowing aging and preventing breakouts by blocking pathogens that cause inflammation and infection. Gweneth Paltrow’s holistic practitioner Dr. Frank Lipman recommends probiotics for their benefits to skin tone and clarity. Evidently they’re working for her! Recent studies by the National Center for Biotechnology Information confirm that consuming probiotics leads to shinier, thicker hair and stronger nails through heightened delivery of nutrients to the scalp and cuticles. Probiotics are not a health fad—they are the real deal. They help supply the vitamins and minerals that keep us young and healthy, creating more luxuriant locks, brighter complexion, and better nail beds, literally from the inside out. So, where do we find these miraculous microorganisms? You’re already familiar with probiotics’ most commonly discussed source: yogurt. But, in fact, the media’s obsession with yogurt’s digestive benefits is skewed. With probiotics, quality and especially quantity matter. Probiotics are counted in CFU’s, (colony forming units), and experts say you need at least 10 billion per serving to make any real difference in your health. Many products claim to contain probiotics without delivering an effective amount, and all probiotic strains are not created equal. Here’s the breakdown. The bacteria typically used to make yogurt, L. bulgaricus and S. thermophiles, have little effect on the digestive tract. Strains like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria really do the job. Plus, the majority of yogurt is heated after culturing to prolong its shelf life, which kills good bacteria. Yogurt lovers should buy organic, unprocessed yogurt labeled “live, active cultures.” Organic or not, however, yogurt has only a fraction of the probiotics it takes to improve digestion—a meager few billion per helping, according to microbiologist Jeffery Gordon.
status” among probiotic foods, but at around $5 a bottle, this Gucci handbag of digestive health has only about 2 billion CFU per 16oz. serving. Kefir, the lactose-free cultured milk drink that tastes similar to yogurt, counts 10 billion CFU per 8 oz serving at just $3 a quart. The most supercharged drinkable source of probiotics available today is GoodBelly juice. Twice as potent as Kefir, GoodBelly juices are completely vegan with 20 billion CFU per cup at $5 per quart, making it a better quality and value than its counterparts. Probiotics are also abundant in foods, especially pickled vegetables like sauerkraut and Korean specialty, kimchi. Miso paste and tempeh, both made with aged, fermented soybeans, are also probiotic-rich, and miso paste makes the perfect base for sauces and marinades. If yogurt, astringent veggies, and vegan food aren’t really your thing, you’re still in luck! Supplements still stand far above all other sources of good bacteria. Renew Life Ultimate Flora and NOW Foods Probiotic offer the most concentrated, highest quality probiotic capsules on the market. At 50 billion CFU per serving, a month’s supply costs $35—that’s about a dollar a day for superior benefits to your digestion, health, and beauty. The practice of culturing food and drink for improved digestive health is an age-old holistic practice, and we’ve finally recognized the benefits! Great on the inside, probiotics make an amazing contribution to your natural glow and help you cut back spending on cosmetics. It can’t hurt, and they really work-- how else would they have jumped so quickly into GOOP’s favorite blog topics? Plus, how cool to be the first of your friends to own a beauty product made entirely of bacteria?! ABOUT THE WRITER: Emelyn Daly is the daughter of actor Tim Daly and Amy Van Nostrand. 10 TIPS TO A HEALTHIER YOU THE POWER
OF
RED
Fire up your health habits by eating red. Deep red fruits and vegetables are virtual “superfoods” and should be eaten every day, according to the National Cancer Institute. These gorgeous red foods contain phytochemicals, substances found only in plants, that help your body fight disease and promote good health. Try to eat 4-7 servings a week for optimal benefits.

SMART & SPICY One whiff of this intoxicating scent can instantly make you feel alert, but did you know that cinnamon sharpens your mind? Research shows that the smell of cinnamon can help boost brain functions such as memory and attention span. Gum anyone?
GO NUTS
According to the Mayo Clinic, nuts are pretty close to the perfect food for weight control, heart health and nutrition. These powerhouses are packed with fiber, potassium, zinc and iron. So go ahead and grab a few to satisfy hunger.
AVOCADO LOVE
SP 101
Not only do sweet potatoes taste like dessert, they are rich in vitamin A, beta-carotene (from the rich orange color) and fiber, especially if you leave the skin on. These spuds have so many health benefits, it’s hard to know which are most important. Have fun researching!
Many of us avoid avocados because of their high fat content, but recent medical studies suggest we should do just the opposite. Avocados are associated with better diet quality and the American Heart Association reports an avocado a day may lower “bad” cholesterol. Love that.
IT’S ALL GREEK When it comes to Greek yogurt, the benefits are impressive—and easy to digest. Low in fat, high in calcium, and packed with protein (with 2-3 times the amount per serving than regular yogurt) and probiotics for digestive health, the verdict is in: Eat often for a myriad of health rewards.
STRESS BUSTERS LAUGH IT UP Babies can be born smiling and children smile up to 400 times a day. Smiling reduces blood pressure and stress hormones like cortisol, while releasing mood enhancers like endorphins. British researchers have found that one smile can provide the brain stimulation of 2,000 chocolate bars— so spread the smile.
S-L-O-W IT DOWN Try speaking more slowly than usual when you feel stressed. Stressed people tend to speak fast and breathlessly. Slowing down your speech helps you relax and think more calmly and reasonably— and helps others hear you in positive ways. Ahhh.
ZZZ The Dalai Lama has this tip covered: “Sleep is the best meditation.” For a stress-free night, remember to turn off your digital devices one hour before bed—the blue light emitted by our laptops, smartphones and computers has been shown to interrupt sleep patterns.

playing THE FIELD
It’s football season and time to use some of football’s favorite plays as life-lessons for dating and mating. Don’t believe it? Check out these plays to win your game, whether it’s meeting someone new or rekindling some romance with your significant other.
1
You and a few friends head out for an evening of taps and tapas. A guy comes over and starts talking to you. Your girlfriend jumps in with some oh-so-flirty comment. Pass Interference! Illegally hindering another player’s chances of catching a forward pass. Penalty: Your girlfriend needs to be pushed back with a 15 foot (away from the guy) penalty.
2
The evening is going slowly and there’s not a whole lot of action on the “field”. It’s time to look further across the room, spot someone, and get ready to go for the Bomb or Going Deep, a long pass play, like catching a guy’s eye across the room and then move closer. While the bomb is a lowpercentage pass, it can really swing the momentum of a game (and your evening).
3
“The ability to scramble is a plus on every playing field.”
You’ve been trying but nothing is happening. Drop back, where you give up the search for a little bit and enjoy the time with your friends. Nothing attracts a guy’s attention better than a woman who’s having fun!
76 FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015
4
You make a joke or a pass, and it falls flat. Recover from a fumble by acknowledging it and moving on. Since either the offense or the defense can recover a fumble, you might want to coordinate with a friend in advance to have your back and help with the recovery.
5
Holding is an illegal action where one player keeps another from advancing by grabbing him and holding him back. If someone is holding onto a guy who’s obviously interested in you, get in there and act like you know him…he’ll escape and thank you later.
6
It’s almost time to leave. Go for a Scramble, walk quickly around the bar and check out whether any ‘receivers’ are open to receiving your pass.

pasta “Everything I am, I owe to Spaghetti. Sophia Loren
If food could be as sexy and lusty as a woman, it would be pasta. As the weather changes and we bid ciao bella to summer salads and seafood, say buongiorno to a party on a plate... Pasta Bolognese.
78 FULLBEAUTY | FALL 2015
Since great food is like great fashion, one style does not fit all. That’s why there are 350 different types of pasta around the world—and about four times that many names for them! The names of pasta usually match the shapes. Farfalle pasta means “butterfly” or “bowtie” pasta. Orrechiette is named because it looks like a little ear. From tubes to ribbons, ridged to curled, strands to ornamental shapes, it’s no wonder that kids love choosing the shape as much as the taste. Now that there are gluten-free pastas, whole wheat pastas and low cal pastas, focus on what sauce you want to make. Cooks use different shapes and sizes of pasta for different purposes and especially for different sauces. Delicate sauce, delicate pasta. Hearty sauce, like bolognese, hearty pasta. Pasta is one of the most affordable, versatile and satisfying dinners, especially when you serve it Bolognese. The only question for your bolognese sauce is whether you want to go designer, ready-to-wear or eco-friendly, so we’re giving you three choices…Indulgent with short ribs, Traditional with chopped meat, and Modern with turkey.
INDULGENT (SHORT RIBS) BOLOGNESE This short ribs recipe is a bit more complicated, but it can definitely be done by even beginner cooks. It is more a feast than a meal, since the short ribs give an extraordinary flavor and are very filling. INGREDIENTS Prep 30 min. Cook 3 hrs.
DIRECTIONS 8 Servings
2 tablespoons oil 3 1/2 lbs. short ribs, about 2 inches 2 stalks celery, finely chopped 3 carrots, finely chopped 1 medium onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 tablespoon flour 1 bay leaf 3 sprigs of thyme 2 sprigs fresh rosemary 1 cup beef broth 1 cup red wine 1 28 oz. can chopped tomatoes with liquid or crushed tomatoes
Tie together thyme and rosemary with twine. Heat oil in a 4-quart Dutch oven. Season short ribs generously with salt and pepper and add ribs to hot oil in small batches, brown on all sides. Remove from pan as done and set aside until all meat is browned. If needed, add 1 Tablespoon of oil to the hot pan. Add onions, celery and carrots to pan and cook for about 5 minutes or until soft and golden in color. Add garlic & cook an additional 2 minutes. Add flour and tomato paste, stirring for 2 minutes. Add beef broth & wine, stirring and scraping up brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Add tomatoes, thyme/rosemary bundle and bay leaf. Return ribs to pot. Bring liquid to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cover pot and place in the oven. Cook until the ribs are very tender, about 3 hours. Remove ribs from sauce. Place Dutch oven over medium heat uncovered and simmer to thicken sauce slightly. When ribs are cool enough, remove meat from bone and shred into pieces. TRADITIONAL (GROUND BEEF) BOLOGNESE
MODERN (TURKEY) BOLOGNESE
When Bolognese was created, ground beef was the basic choice. The sauce is still the perfect accompaniment for penne or other tubular pasta.
With all the choices out there to create healthier meals, it’s no surprise that a great turkey Bolognese recipe can satisfy even the die-hard Italians. Great with spaghetti or lighter pasta, it works just as well with whole wheat and gluten free pasta.
INGREDIENTS (8 servings) Prep 25 min. Cook 20 min. 1 pound bulk Italian sausage 1/2 pound ground beef 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup finely chopped carrot 1/3 cup chopped celery 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 28 oz. can diced tomatoes, undrained 1 6 oz. can tomato paste 1/2 cup dry red wine or beef broth 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 cup whipping cream 1 pound dried spaghetti 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley DIRECTIONS Cook sausage, ground beef, onion, carrot, celery, and garlic over medium-high heat in a large pot until sausage and beef are browned. Drain off fat. Stir tomatoes, tomato paste, wine, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper into meat mixture. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove pot from heat. Stir in whipping cream. Serve sauce over hot cooked pasta and sprinkle with fresh parsley.

TRAVEL
“Autumn is the eternal corrective. It is ripeness and color and a time of maturity; the meaning of the rolling hills that reach to the far horizon.” Hal Borland
TRAVEL AMERICA BY WINE REGION Enjoy the appeal and beauty of fall foliage, and the reward of the perfect fruit turned into the perfect glass of wine. Of course, northern California leads the list of wine country destinations, but you might be surprised how many great wineries are much closer to home. Fall foliage is the added bonus, with wine harvests, festivals, tastings and special events making this the season to get ‘seasoned’ about great wines

and great wine regions. The added bonus is that where there is great wine, there is great food, so even if you’re not a wine lover, you will quickly become a wine country lover. There are lots of small hotels, inns and B&Bs, but make reservations since fall is peak season.
Northeast New York State will surprise even the most discerning oenophiles (wine lovers), and there are two distinct regions that are worth a visit, both for the wine and the scenery.
THE NEW YORK STATE WINE REGIONS Comprised of five specific areas: Niagara, Lake Erie, Finger Lakes, Hudson River and Long Island, the Finger Lakes Region is the largest and most breathtakingly beautiful in the fall. The region makes it really easy to navigate with four “wine trails”, Canandaigua, Keuka Lake, Cayuga and Seneca Lake. Gary Vaynerchuk, host of “The Thunder Show” on winelibrarytv.com, is really big on the Rieslings in upstate New York. Aren’t familiar with Rieslings? Riesling [pronounced REEZ-ling] originated in Germany and Austria and is a sweeter dry white wine made from the riesling grape. It contains floral bouquets as well as hints of peach, honey and apricot fruit flavors. Tasting rooms to try: Ravines Wine Cellars, Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyards.
Southeast
VIRGINIA has always been known as a visit-worthy state, with its historic battlefields, rolling hills and proximity to D.C. Now, you can add another reason because Loudoun County, Virginia (just 45 minutes from D.C.) is getting a major reputation for great wine. Wine Enthusiast magazine named Virginia one of its top 10 wine travel destinations, and wine production over the last decade has increased from 64 to over 200 wineries. Most popular varietals are Viognier (a fragrant and stronger tasting white wine), Petit Verdot (classic black grape variety) and Norton (sometimes referred to as America’s true grape, a dry red table wine). There are tours for everyone, including yoga and wine and food and wine. Tasting rooms to try: In Loudoun, Stone Tower, Lost Creek, Doukenie, and Greenhill. Others include The Jefferson Vineyards near Monticello, Veritas Winery near Charlottesville, Barboursville Vineyards and King Family Vineyards.
Midwest THE NORTH FORK OF LONG ISLAND You’ve seen the celebs heading to the Hamptons in the summer, but the smart sippers head out to the North Fork in the fall. Just a quick two hour drive (after summer traffic) from New York City, are gorgeous beaches and sprawling vineyards. Referred to as a cross between Cape Cod and Tuscany, Long Island’s North Fork has been producing wine for 40 years and is starting to pick up a reputation for Cab Franc (Cabernet Franc is one of the major black grape varieties and is the blending of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot). Because of its cooler climate, the North Fork Cab Franc is a bit crisper and more rustic, but still has the cherryand-berry aromas, together with a seductive blend of herbs, spices, and violets. With the majority of the region’s 50-plus wineries situated in the North Fork along Route 25 (Main Street) and Route 48, winery hopping couldn’t be easier. Tasting rooms to try: Paumanok, Macari, Shinn Estate, Bedell and Sparkling Point.
MICHIGAN
Isn’t being the home to the automotive industry and some of the most beautiful lakes in the country enough? Michigan, especially Traverse City in northern Michigan, is working on expanding its reputation as the Cherry Capital of the World to the cherry and grape capital. Situated along the 45th parallel (the same as Bordeaux, Burgundy and Alsace) and sheltered from harsh winters by its proximity to Lake Michigan, Traverse City has grown in popularity over the last decade as an exciting new region for wine. The majority of Michigan’s 71 commercial wineries are located here, and vineyards of Traverse City have crisp, refreshing whites and silky, cool-climate reds. They also have rye and bourbon, just in case you want the option. A real specialty is ice wine, an intensely-flavored dessert wine made from the juice of winter-frozen grapes...yum! Tasting room to try: Definitely the appropriately named “Tasting Room” which gives everyone a chance to try their favorites, including wines, ales and spirits.

Southwest TEXAS
No surprise that the state known as much for its “big everything” as its oil, has now become the country’s second-largest AVA (American Viticultural Area), with more than 9 million acres. Texas Hill Country is just north of San Antonio and west of Austin, and has more than 30 wineries with row upon row of Bordeaux blends and Italian varietals. Some 5 million annual visitors make Hill Country the third-most visited region in the nation, though many outside the state have no idea it even produces great Cabernet, Syrah and Sangiovese. Tasting rooms to try: The entire month of October is Texas wine trail month so check online for all the info about the gorgeous wineries and participating vineyards. And check texaswinetrail.com for a list of weekend events throughout the fall. Wine & swine? Kick Butt Cab? Only in Texas!
Pacific Northwest CALIFORNIA
In the north, there are several great wine areas. There is a reason why Napa is called the “holy grail” of wine country. According to Jason Smith, a master sommelier and director of wine at Bellagio in Las Vegas, “They are really set up for travel and, of course, everyone knows the wines.” Sonoma County has a small-town atmosphere and a really charming town built around a square, and Healdsburg is not as busy and equally charming. Good news, bad news. While California is clearly in need of rain, the drought is producing extraordinary wine...seems that those vines have to dig deeper to get to water and that produces smaller and profoundly more flavorful grapes. Tasting rooms: There are tastings at wineries of every level, but be prepared for some of the really high end wine like Opus and Duckhorn to be pretty pricey for a tasting. Definitely ask the price first.

WASHINGTON This is the U.S.’s second-largest wine-producing state and Columbia Valley, Washington is comprised of six wine regions. The Walla Walla Valley has over 100 wineries, and a new winery seems to open up every two weeks in Walla Walla which has the tagline, “the town was so nice, they named it twice”. There are lots of conveniently located tasting rooms downtown and you enjoy some excellent Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet. While it’s about four hours from Seattle, Portland or Boise, Walla Walla has already gotten Napa-fied, with chic restaurants and pretty little shops. Tasting rooms to try: Nicholas Cole Cellars, K. Vintners, Walla Walla Vintners and Abeja, all with wonderful wine and beautiful settings.
OREGON The Willamette Valley (pronounced will-AM-it) is located just southwest of Portland, Oregon and is one of the most famous regions in the United States for its Pinot Noir. Apparently, the climate and the conditions of this area create wine that can compete with those produced in the Burgundy region of France. Tasting rooms to try: Anne Amie, Archery Summit, Bergstrom, Capitello and Domaine Serene.
Color SCOPE Colors have a magical quality, and they are saying more about you than you think. Have some fun and wear the unexpected to get what you want.
Every season, the fashion industry comes up with colors for every obsessive fashionista to wear…if only because they’re defined as high style. A tee shirt becomes a statement when it’s in one of these bequeathed colors. Pantone is the color bible and, as Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s executive director said,“Fall 2015 is rooted in multi-faceted colors that can be worn to portray effortless sophistication.” Sounds a bit complicated, but imagine if you were the person who had to come up with the endless names to define the blues and greens we have loved for decades.
PRACTICAL DRIED HERB is military-inspired and, like anyone with a limited wardrobe, wear it to say you are practical, low maintenance, and get the job done.
FRIENDLY BISCAY BAY combines the energy of green with the calm of blue. Since it reminds people of tropical vacations, you’ll come across as friendly and fun.
CALM DESERT SAGE is cool and soothing, the perfect neutral. Wear it in tough meetings (or break-ups) and you will be the one sane and calm person.
THOUGHTFUL REFLECTING POND is poetic, a little smokier than summer navy. Wear it to say that you are thoughtful and willing to look deeper to find an answer.
STRONG STORMY WEATHER is a powerful gray, reinforcing that the storm is a good opportunity for the trees to show their strength and stability.
PLAYFUL CADMIUM ORANGE is perfect for boho and other retro trends. Playful and fun, if this color was a person, it would be Goldie Hawn back in the day.
HOPEFUL OAK BLUFF is a holdover from summer, reminding us of warmth and comfort. It is also ‘hopeful’, so wear it to cheer a friend or when asking a favor.
PERSUASIVE CASHMERE ROSE is soft and sultry, a take on the 60’s trend. It’s femininity is perfect for date night, but it’s also surprisingly good when you need to be persuasive.
SOPHISTICATED MARSALA is the color of the year. If you’re one of the people who look great in it, wear it to communicate warmth and sophistication.
CREATIVE AMETHYST ORCHID is called “the jewel in the crown of the Fall 2015 palette.” It looks so pretty, making you seem approachable, creative and feminine.
