Wonder Women This is our fourth issue of fullbeauty magazine and we have saved the best for the last issue of 2015 by celebrating women and their accomplishments. Whether you call it plus, full-figured or curvy, want to be treated as a special size or just one of the crowd, this has been a year of energy and empowerment, of recognition and relevance. Plus-size models Ashley Graham and Robin Lawley graced the pages of Sports Illustrated, Tess Holliday took over the cover of People magazine with a new definition of fashion model, and Erica Jean redefined fitness on Running magazine. Celebs including Rebel Wilson, Martine McCutcheon and Melissa McCarthy launched new fashion lines for curvy girls. And fullbeauty.com became a brand synonymous with living a beautifull and fullfilling lifestyle. We decided to also celebrate those women in entertainment, politics and athleticism that influenced our perceptions of ourselves and of all women with the WoW Awards—Women of Wonder! Viola Davis’ performance, the Emmy she won for it, and her acceptance speech will all go down in entertainment history. Amy Schumer has formed a commonality of experience that makes every woman laugh and cry at the same time. And, to the women who have forged ahead in the male dominated world of athleticism, a collective WoW for breaking through the glass ceiling with a boulder.

LETTERS

we hear you This has been an extraordinary year and thank you so much for helping us with every issue of fullbeauty magazine. Keep your letters coming to stephanie@fullbeauty.com WE LOVE OUR COUNTRY

HEALTH

Better believe it! I’m a Georgia girl and you had my Trisha. I love her and everything she does and says. Your magazine feels good and I really appreciate that. We can all lighten up a little bit and enjoy getting dressed a little more when we have dresses like that one on page 49. I just got it and I feel so chic, I can’t believe it. Thanks for that. Carla B. Athens GA.

When I saw you had health, I was waiting for the usual gotta go on a diet stuff, but you surprised me. I really didn’t understand probiotics, but now I do and they seem to make a little more sense. And your tips were just friendly and I felt accepted instead of lectured. Will you be doing some exercise info because I think you would make it nice for those of us who aren’t already fit and go to the gym all the time. Sue W.

FALL FASHION

I just got the fall issue of your magazine and couldn’t believe that Meghan Trainor was on the cover. At first I thought it was odd, but then I realized that girl is all about loving your curves...and she looked GREAT! Loved the pics inside too. Ashley, Seattle WA

TRAVEL

You promised great clothes and you delivered. That green leather skirt on page 25, that cable sweater on page 31, and that flowered shirt on page 57, you asked us to tell you what we like so give me more, more, more of clothes like those. Also, I thought the shoes were fine, but could we have some more heels because that’s what’s really hard to find in wider widths. Thanks. Melanie G.

Thanks for the travel. A lot of fashion magazines forget we like to go places to wear the clothes we buy, and I love road trips so your wine country story was great. I never would have guessed I had such incredible vineyards close to home. Thank you for creating a magazine that speaks to my life, my style and my lifestyle. It’s been a really pleasant surprise. Babs, Dallas TX

YOU’VE GOT IT ALL

FUNNY!

GODDESSES

Seriously, you had the baseball booty thing and now you have playing the field. I really like your approach to sports. It has some information but makes it all fun and light. They are called games, right? Chrissy, Baltimore MD.

A magazine with curvy girls from country music, from Mad Men, and from comedy. Keep it coming PLEASE. There’s nothing else like your magazine. Sincerely, Rosemarie M.

8 FULLBEAUTY | WINTER 2015

NEVER WOULD HAVE BELIEVED IT!

Man may not live by bread alone, but I could definitely live by pasta, especially with bolognese. Thanks for the three different recipes since we all live by different budgets. I did splurge and made the short ribs recipe for my husband. Wow, it was a little complicated but so impressive, I’m making it again for the holidays. Wendy K. Westwood MA.

FASHION NEWS

THERE WAS A “NEW” CURVY KID ON THE BLOCK THIS YEAR…

fullbeauty.com Already successful as onestopplus.com, this was a year of firsts that reinforced the name change and evolved sensibility of what it means to be a full beauty. There wasn’t a fashion/lifestyle magazine for curvy girls…until fullbeauty magazine. There wasn’t an activewear line exclusively devoted to the size and sensibility of curvy girls…until fullbeauty SPORT. There weren’t enough style options for curvy girls…until fullbeauty.com added Swimsuitsforall, Violeta by Mango, Fashion to Figure, City Chic, Torrid, Ulla Popken, Levi’s, Ellos and so many others that make it the premier destination for style size 12 and up. It’s more than an acknowledgment, more than an acceptance, it’s the time to love how we look and own what we have! #OwnYourCurves is a united voice to take feeling great to the next level, believing every girl should own her curves.

Meet FLO KAMIL DESSEN Senior Vice President, General Brand Manager – fullbeauty.com Q. Why is this the right time to take fullbeauty.com to the next level? A. There is so much excitement surrounding great fashion in every size, and fullbeauty.com is clearly at the forefront of that “‘revolution”’. Fullbeauty Brands™ has fashion brands that look and fit better than ever at all price points and sensibilities. So, this is the perfect time to aggregate these great offerings at one destination, the fullbeauty.com Marketplace. As a curvy girl, I am thrilled to finally offer the fashion that we all want and really proud of the fullbeauty mission…we want women of all shapes and sizes to be confident in their bodies and own their curves! Q. What are the latest innovations that are in store for fullbeauty.com? A. We already have a magazine, look books, and instructional videos, making shopping a pleasure by offering both the inspiration and the selection. We have two clickthroughs on our site…“start shopping” and “get inspired” …because looking great is about feeling great, and nothing is more empowering than editorial content created specifically for you. We will be launching a new state of the art website in early 2016 that will make shopping even easier, more fun and rewarding. I can’t wait for you to see it!

10 FULLBEAUTY I WINTER 2015

Q. Women still complain that there isn’t enough trendy fashion in their size. How are you working to improve that? A. I think it’s always best to build your wardrobe with a foundation of new classics that can be worn, re-worn and reinvented every season by adding a few new “trendy” pieces. We make certain we have brands that cover every fashion option, from trendy to classic, and I love the winter trends because they’re wearable, a bit whimsical and always have great attitude. Our trends echo the runway, but are modified to fit real women with real curves in their real lives. Q. What 3 pieces of clothing should women own? A. For Winter, I love fringe and Boho. Must-haves are a great fitting pair of palazzo pants... incredibly versatile for both day and night. For fun, a faux fur statement piece… mine is a long vest because it looks cool and won’t get too hot. And a fabulous pair of boots. We now have great boot options for wide and extra wide calfs so they can be worn over, under and all around the town. Nothing makes you feel more confident than strutting in a new pair of boots! Q. Any final words? A. fullbeauty.com is also the premier gift-giving destination for curvy women and big guys. Visit our holiday shops and have a fullbeauty Holiday! Best wishes from my family to yours for a peacefull and beautifull holiday season!

FULLbeauty HOLIDAY

When we look back over this past year, there are women who represented impressive change in how women are perceived as well as how we feel about ourselves. It was 60 seconds that showed the power of a “real” performance. It was a woman who wakes us up with a fresh sensibility and stands up for her principles. It was women who consistently show the power of acting collectively in a way that moves everyone forward. And it was the performances by athletes, both as individuals and as members of a team, that made history—not for a game, but for an entire generation. We look at these women of wonder with gratitude and can only imagine how much less interesting a year it would have been without them.

FULLBEAUTY I WINTER 2015 13

ENTERTAINMENT

Viola Davis “The two most important days in your life are the day you were born, and the day you discover why you were born”. She didn’t cure cancer or ensure world peace. She just gave us the year’s most powerful 60 seconds of television (not including news). To women of all ethnicities, Viola Davis showed what coming clean can mean...literally and figuratively. Viola Davis turned wig and makeup removal into a defining moment for women who hide behind perfect hair and perfect makeup, and her perfect character became painfully real when the facade was removed. Viewers felt like they weren’t supposed to be watching, and its voyeuristic quality made the vulnerability of the powerful female character that much more intimate. Without the token ‘ugly cry’, the pain was palpable and the personal moment in a woman’s life became shared angst.

Add to that, Viola suffered from alopecia in real life so this was no Demi Moore shaved-head moment. Unlike the usual pictures of actresses looking ‘natural’ when we know they’re wearing makeup and gloss, Viola Davis changed many women’s perceptions of themselves in that 60 seconds. She won an Emmy, made a speech that resonated with every woman who has tried to cross society’s arbitrary lines of race, age and gender, and she won our collective consciousness as a woman of wonder. 14 FULLBEAUTY I WINTER 2015

Amy Schumer While Amy may seem to have come out of nowhere, she has more than paid her dues on the comedy circuit for almost 10 years. More than breaking ground for “the subversive feminism of her comedy”, she’s really just playing by the same rules as the guys. As she says, “My comedy is unapologetic and fearless. Like, sometimes you’ll wind up having sex with someone that you probably shouldn’t. I’m interested in sharing that part of myself unapologetically so that other people will hopefully feel better.” This is definitely her year, having written and starred in “Trainwreck”, won an Emmy, became besties with Jennifer Lawrence, and opened for Madonna in her world tour. Crazy…Madonna! Amy’s just so genuine and honest, like when she counters the concept of ‘exciting time in Hollywood for women’. As she said, “In an industry that judges you solely based on your appearance when you know that every day you’re just decomposing, barreling toward death while smaller, younger starlets are popping out? ... No. It’s not an exciting time for women in Hollywood.”

That same honesty and impressive ability to step up happened after a fatal shooting took place at a showing of her film in Louisiana. Amy didn’t just keep a low profile and wait for it to pass. Instead, she became an advocate for stricter gun control laws and increased mental health funding. She is equally aggressive when she goes against the fat-shamers...you go girl!

“11 years, I’ve been on the road telling dirty jokes and getting paid on pizza.”

POLITICS

The Female Senators of the U.S. Women account for 51% of the population, but only 20% of the representatives in the Senate. That’s not bad when you consider that there have been only 44 females of the nearly 2,000 senators in the history of Congress. So how effective are these 20 Queens of the Hill? This Girls’ Club gets a major fullbeauty WoW! As Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill says, “When we join forces, we are a force to be reckoned with”. These women have a natural camaraderie and, as predominantly working mothers, they are results-oriented. They have passed more legislation, have voted more for bills by the other party, and are credited 16 FULLBEAUTY I WINTER 2015

with ending the 2013 senate shutdown by keeping the lines of communication open. As an example, over the last seven years, the average female senator cosponsored 6.29 bills with another female senator, whereas the average male senator cosponsored only 4.07 bills with his average male peer... that’s a 50% difference! There’s a lot of trust among the women, and you generally don’t have a lot of trust in the Senate. The women of the Senate meet about once every six weeks for a dinner on Capitol Hill, organized by Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), known as “the dean” of the female senators. Mikulski is a trailblazer for female senators,

Lisa Murkowski (AK) Diane Feinstein (CA) Barbara Boxer (CA) Mazie Hirono (HI) Joni Ernst (IA)

Susan Collins (ME) Barbara Mikulski (MD) Elizabeth Warren (MA) Debbie Stabenow (MI) Amy Klobuchar (MN)

having served for almost 30 years and this year becoming the first-ever female head of the powerful Appropriations Committee. Senator McCaskill often spearheads regular book exchange parties and dinners with her fellow female senators and supreme court justices to collaborate, to generate ideas ... and occasionally just gossip. “When we are socializing and talking about things other than work, invariably the next time we try to work together it just goes better. We have a very, very respected rule that what we talk about there never leaves the room,” McCaskill said. “So these are pretty free-wheeling discussions, and

Claire McCaskill (MO) Deb Fischer (NE) Jeanne Shaheen (NH) Kelly Ayotte (NH) Kirsten Gillibrand (NY)

Heidi Heitkamp (ND) Patty Murray (WA) Maria Cantwell (WA) Shelley Moore Capito (WV) Tammy Baldwin (WI)

we have averted some legislative logjams by some of our discussions at those dinners. I think we’re all determined to use those opportunities to try to move things along.” As proof, Internet startup Quorum crunched the numbers and found that women in the Senate are better dealmakers and consistently outperform the old boys club without ever being allowed in the locker. Most important, issues gaining traction in the Senate like campus sexual assault and human trafficking are spearheaded by women. Bottom line...they get far more done than their male counterparts, with only a fraction of the force! FULLBEAUTY I WINTER 2015 17

U.S. Womens Soccer Team KICKING IT UP We all know that women’s sports never get the accolades and attention they truly deserve, but this year’s soccer win was the most brilliant star in the sports sky. What a night, what a game, what an opportunity for every little girl to see her own potential! It was an extraordinary season with

incredible athletes, women who excel individually and as a team. While it all came down to one game, it proved once and for all that women who participate in sports should be paid on an equal basis as the men, and now they have the following to make it happen.

ATHLETICISM

NFL Coach Jen Welter PLAYING BALL First, Jen Welter made history as the first woman to play a nonkicking position in a men’s professional football league as a running back. Now, she made history this year by becoming the first woman ever appointed to a coaching position on an NFL team. While she could pass for Mariska Hargitay on SVU, Jen brought her own power and polish to the Arizona Cardinals, working with inside linebackers. Minimizing the significance, the Cardinals head coach simply said that “Coaching is nothing more than teaching, and if you can make [players] better, I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, man, [they’ll] listen.” Good to know that Jen doesn’t have to wear green and fly around to be heard!

First Female Rangers HOME ON THE “RANGE” For the first time in history, two women have completed the vigorous training curriculum to graduate from the elite Army Ranger School. Ranger School is the Army’s premier combat leadership course, teaching Ranger students how to overcome fatigue, hunger, and stress to lead soldiers during small unit combat operations. This 62-day course on leadership and small unit tactics pushes Ranger students to their mental and physical limits by forcing them to operate on minimal food and sleep. This is grueling stuff and the fact that two women finished it on exactly the same criteria as men is really impressive and important! As Secretary of the Army John M. McHugh stated, “Congratulations to all of our new Rangers. Each Ranger School graduate has shown the physical and mental toughness to successfully lead organizations at any level. This course has proven that every soldier, regardless of gender, can achieve his or her full potential.” WoW!

first look FASHION Break all the rules of the rest of the year…this is the season where we get to go a little too far, from the top of our teased hair to the tips of our sequined toes. Those jingle bell earrings would be ridiculous at any other time, now it’s just Kitschmas. Bring out the lamé pants and liquid leggings. Shimmy up a storm in shimmer and add a little frosting on your fashion cake with icy pastel sweaters. And feel like the girl invited to every Hollywood party by wrapping yourself in fabulous faux fur. Whatever you do, have fun with the fa la la fashion...and right into 2016! NIGHT OUT

Underwire Bonded Bra GODDESS $44.99

“Dress for the night you want to have.” Think about what you put on first and take off last…it’s your bra! Don’t your bff’s (best frontal friends) deserve to be fashionable, deserve to feel and look their sexiest best? So, next time you’re having a ‘girls’ night out, try one of the fabulous new sexy, yet shockingly supportive, bras. We used to have to choose…do I want support or do I want sexy. Underwires were mini torture items and straps were designed to create new lanes in our shoulders. Now, straps are far more comfortable, we’ve all learned that the right size literally works wonders, and while wearing a bra will never be as comfortable as not wearing one (some days just aren’t worth putting on a bra), it’s now worth the effort when we want to make it! And just like we have different shoes for different occasions, your bra drawer needs a little more diversity…occasion dressing.

A push-up bra for a curvy girl? Yes, why not. We need to stop the stereotypes and go for whatever fits our personality as well as our body. The new demi bras work in all sizes, which is why all sizes are now available. The convertible bras can actually stay up and keep everything in place. And we get to feel sassy, sexy, and just plain sensational with a hook-up …of a bra, that is. Here’s the best part…whether we want to blame Kim Kardashian or all the new empowered curvy girls who are breaking the rules, letting our bras show a little makes us feel younger, sexier, and yes, confident! Whether it’s a beautiful bra strap that peeks out, a lightly sheer shirt or sweater that shows the ‘girls’ in all their glory, or a deep v-neck sweater that lets the lace at the top of the bra show, go for it! Surprise yourself (and maybe those around you).

You’re at a NY fashion event and you feel this aura of energy; you are standing

near Meaghan O’Connor. Besides her obvious vivacity, Meaghan has a natural confidence that comes from knowing herself and owning her style. We did a one-on-one to get her secret style weapons... When we asked you to do ‘makeovers’, you felt differently about it. Why is that? It’s really more about ‘style discovery’. Instead of stepping out of your comfort zone, it’s about redefining what you’re comfortable in. That’s why I chose Shay and Michelle, two confident women who love to try new things.

All products available at fullbeauty.com

You pulled together outfits that made Shay and Michelle feel instantly confident. What influenced your selections? There’s a personal connection. When they light up and say “I would totally wear this”, you know you’ve connected with their idealized visions of themselves.

If you’re not buying anything new for the holiday season, what amps up a look? Easy…a red lip and two coats of mascara...simple as that. Why is your company called Little Lime Dress? Well, the LBD is a safe go-to. I wanted to offer something beyond that...a “Personalized Twist of Style”, the unexpected, like lime!

MICHELLE’S STYLE

Michelle Always told to lose weight, Michelle was initially concerned when Meaghan asked her to be in this fashion shoot. Seeing herself on the photographer’s screen for the first time, she said she “finally felt comfortable in her skin” and was thrilled that she had the courage to do it. Michelle confided that she has always wanted to model but never thought she could…until now! Based on how she lights up the room as well as the camera, she has definitely found her calling. 36 FULLBEAUTY | WINTER 2015

“BODY BAR Michelle loves trying new things with her hair, but was amazed at what our beauty specialist achieved in minutes. For the volume look left, she sprayed the roots with dry shampoo and then did the blow-out from roots to tip. With a little curling iron magic, it was an updated wavy do. On right, some teasing and spray, just like the old days. When going half-up, you need the volume for balance..

BEAUTY BAR Michelle usually wears a bare lip but for the holidays, she agreed to a bright red (left) and a deep plum (right). Liner and matte lipstick, topped with just a light brush of gloss in center, top and bottom. Eyes were smoky, with highlighter on brow bone and shadow extended from center eye to slight cat-eye. All-over shimmer with skin illuminator finished the look.

SHAY’S STYLE

“BODY” BAR Shay’s hair is so versatile, and she has the ability to use it as an accessory to every outfit. At left, the fur collar and necklace called for an updo and, after lots of twisting, our extraordinarily talented beauty specialist created the incredible ‘loose ends’ look. The caftan, right, was all diva so Shay’s half up, high knot look added even more drama to the spectacular outfit.

Surprisingly easy, Shay’s look started with a strong brow and smoky eye. With a moisturizing base and paler blush, the big difference was in her lips. For the neutral colors, left, the lip is a pearlized pale pink with lots of shimmer. For the dark caftan, the lip needed to be more dramatic and our beauty specialist went with darker shades of fuchsia and magenta.

Shay

All products available at fullbeauty.com

While Shay has always been the go-to fashion and style person for all her friends, social media has made her realize that she has valuable things to share with all women. Combining fashion with lifestyle, Shay’s philosophy echoes “living life to the fullest”, which means having great style in your fashion and home, and getting it at every budget. By making her own style rules, she was excited to try things that weren’t already in her closet, including a dramatic caftan and layered winter white.

Makeup HOLIDAY

One of the best things about the holidays is that you get to go for the drama when it comes to makeup...and you’ll look great in the photos! We stole some style from the stars with the prettiest makeup for eyes, face and lips...

Eye Drama I

f eyes are the windows to the soul, Katy Perry’s are in technicolor! Often compared to Elizabeth Taylor and her violet eyes, Katy’s baby blues can handle dramatic color that have become her signature look. Her motto is “if you have confidence, you can pull off anything”, especially great eye makeup! GET KATY’S LOOK OPPOSITE:

hy leave all the gold and silver on the tree when you can ‘decorate’ your face for maximum impact! Sure, it’s a little over the top for everyday, but just perfect for a great night out. Gold is a bit more flattering than silver, giving a warmer rather than cooler look, but make it complementary to whatever you’re wearing. Think of the color of your accessories too, including your jewelry. Scarlet has gold earrings that work beautifully with her makeup. A little shine will always work, but major shine looks best when the rest of the makeup is soft and subtle. Paler lip, softer eye makeup, all the focus is on your gorgeous skin, from face all the way down to where your clothing starts. Don’t forget shoulders if you are going strapless …so sexy. If you’re wearing basic black, your jewelry and makeup turn it from day to night in a second. The mineral makeups are great, but can flake off faster than liquid shine so, for long nights out, go for the staying power and layer.

hen you look like Rihanna, everything looks perfect, but her lips are generally her makeup statement. She looks great in bright red, fuchsia, and deep wine, a reflection of her age and spectacular skin tone. For the rest of us mortals, we have to be a little more discerning with our choices, but the holiday season allows us to go for the drama. Just note -- the darker the color, the more you need a little shine to avoid the Morticia effect.

RED LIPSTICK

The quickest trick to up your makeup game is a bold red lip. If you don’t have time for anything else, put on a bright lip to look put together…and add staying power by using lip liner on whole lip first. (Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red, $6).

CONCEALER

To lighten up dark circles or even those not-so-happy smile lines, stash a liquid concealer pen for extra easy application. (Maybelline DreamLumi Concealer, $8).

HAND CREAM

As the weather gets colder, your hands need some extra TLC. Treat yourself to a mini spa-cation with Kora Organics by Miranda Kerr Hand Cream ($43)—a splurge but worth it.

QUICK & PERFECT EYE SHADOW

Sometimes a liner looks too harsh, but a thin makeup brush used with a thin line of dark shadow close to lash line gives the drama without the drag…especially if it has a little sparkle. (Milani Runway Wet and Dry Eyeshadow is perfect, $7).

Nothing looks fresher and younger than a ‘glowing’ toneperfect skin, but you need to keep it light. Philosophy “no reason to hide instant skin-tone perfecting moisturizer” ($45) gets you ready in a hurry.

Supplements HEALTH TRENDS:

HEALTH OR HYPE? THE PLATE OR THE PILL MYTH: I don’t eat many vegetables or fruits, but I take a multivitamin so I’m getting all the vitamins and minerals I need. FACT: “The big power is the plate, not the pill. Food cannot be duplicated by supplements,” says Roberta Anding, of the American Dietetic Association. Supplements are designed to supplement your nutritional needs. BEST ADVICE: A multivitamin probably won’t hurt you, but it won’t prevent any disease or significant health problems. You still need to eat a well-balanced diet...fruits and vegetables and aim for a rainbow of colors to maximize health benefits.

The myriad of vitamins, minerals and herbal products lining the shelves are a multi-billion dollar industry and are taken by more than half of all Americans. Do they work? Are they safe? Here’s the breakdown of the build-up business.

70 FULLBEAUTY | WINTER 2015

QUICKIE: This is one place where you can ‘shake’ it up with protein and veggie shakes…they cram everything into a weird colored, but reasonably tasting, drink. It’s only valuable with a very short expiration date. Try to be hungry—it tastes better. MYTH: It must be safe if it says “all natural.” It couldn’t be sold if it might be harmful. FACT: Plants may be natural but they can have dangerous side effects or be poisonous. BEST ADVICE: Buyer beware. Just because it’s on the shelf, doesn’t guarantee it’s safe to use. Look for trusted brands and read the claims carefully. If they look too good to be true, they probably are. QUICKIE: Supplements don’t have to get FDA approval. They can claim certain health benefits but can’t claim to prevent or cure a disease. If they do, run, don’t walk, away.

VITAMIN SUPERSTARS With supplements from aloe to zinc on the shelves, it’s not easy to figure out which vitamins and minerals your body needs most. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Mayo Clinic have identified which supplements are the most likely to be effective. MULTI-VITAMINS can be used as “insurance” to fill gaps in your diet, but if you’re eating a well-balanced diet, you may not need one. A multivitamin should include vitamins A, C, D, E and K, as well as potassium, zinc and iodine. Choose one with 100% or less of your daily value (DV) and avoid “megavitamins”—they may contain dangerously high levels of vitamins and minerals. TIP: To maximize absorption, split your vitamin in two and take half in the morning and half in the evening. CALCIUM is essential for keeping bones strong and reducing bone loss. While post-menopausal women are most at risk of a deficiency, bone density loss begins for women in their twenties. Since dairy products are the most common sources of calcium, people who are lactose intolerant or vegan should also consider supplements. TIP: Can’t stand milk? Get your 1,000 mg a day in almonds, oranges (one glass of OJ has 500 mg of calcium as well as all that vitamin C), kale and lots of other food…no excuse! VITAMIN D helps the body absorb calcium, essential for bone health, boosts immunity and may help prevent some cancers. Sunlight is a great source of Vitamin D —but if you live north of Atlanta in the winter, are dark skinned or use a lot of sunscreen, consider a supplement—sunlight alone won’t do the trick. And FYI, sunlight through windows doesn’t count. TIP: Few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D, so the biggest dietary sources are vitamin supplements or fortified foods like dairy products and breakfast cereals, and oily fish like anchovies and trout.

FISH OIL, also known as omega-3 fatty acids, can promote heart health, nourish your brain and lubricate your joints. “Of the supplements not derived from vitamins and minerals,” says a NIH spokesperson, “fish oil probably has the most scientific evidence to support its use.” TIP: Given the importance and benefits of marine omega-3 fatty acids, eat fish or other seafood one to two times per week, particularly fatty (dark meat) fish such as salmon, sardines and albacore tuna. FOLIC ACID is essential for all women of childbearing age and helps protect against neural tube defects in babies, which can develop even before a woman knows she is pregnant. If you’re pregnant, take a prenatal vitamin to help keep you and baby safe. TIP: Although many foods are excellent sources of folate —it’s hard to get all the folic acid you need from food so take your multivitamin each day, too.

RISKY BUSINESS Avoid risky interactions by talking with your doctor before taking herbal or dietary supplements, especially if you take prescription medications. To learn more about specific drug interactions or supplements, WebMD is a good (and easy to use) source: www.webmd.com/interaction-checker/ Learn more about dietary supplements and herbal remedies, their effectiveness, usual dosage, and drug interactions, check the U.S. National Library of Medicine website: www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginformation.html

OATS INDEED

Warm oatmeal is an awesome go-to comfort food, and a healthy choice. Oats are high in insoluble fiber (for digestive and bowel health) and zinc (important for immune function). Skip the pre-sweetened varieties and add your own fruit topping.

FLOSS UP

COOPED UP? Stuck indoors this winter…home or office? English ivy may help you breath easier—NASA scientists listed it as the number one best airfiltering houseplant, absorbing formaldehyde and clearing air of allergens. Add water and breath easy.

Dental health research suggests flossing may be good for your heart. Why? Bacteria in the mouth may travel to the arteries—and there are more bacteria in your mouth than there are people in the world. So smile—you’ll be glad you flossed.

BUST A MOVE! Even if you’ve got two left feet, ballroom dancing is good for your mind and body. It’s a weight-bearing activity which builds bones, and the mental challenge of memorizing steps is great for your brain. So go ahead— it’s never too chilly to cha-cha.

HOT SOX Cayenne, or Capsicum, is known for its healing properties, including relieving coughs, chills and congestion. If you tend to get cold feet in the winter, a tiny amount of cayenne powder sprinkled into your socks may help warm them. (Avoid eyes and mouth!)

GET TO THE ROOT OF IT Root vegetables grow underground where they absorb nutrients and minerals. Plentiful and fresh in winter, they’re inexpensive and easy to prepare—choose beets for anti-oxidants, carrots for beta-carotene and turnips for vitamins C and A. Root, Root!

A CROCK? Slow cooking tastes great and saves time and money. According to Dr. Weill, the lower temperatures preserve nutrients lost when food is cooked rapidly at high heat. Invest in a programmable crockpot and add fresh, healthy ingredients in the morning—then come home to delicious soup or stew that’s ready to eat. No crock!

BLUES BUSTERS PET ME Dogs are great for making connections. Forget online matchmaking—a dog is a natural conversation starter. As a mood enhancer it only takes a few minutes with a pet to feel less stressed—your body goes through physical changes to lower cortisol (stress hormone) and raise serotonin (a feel-better chemical.) Woof Woof!

MAP TIME! OK, the holidays are over and it’s still winter. Things are starting to look a little bleak. Grab your map and start planning a trip. A recent Dutch study on the effect that vacations have on happiness showed the largest boost came from the simple act of planning —and that “vacation anticipation” enhanced happiness for 8 weeks.

‘TIS BETTER TO GIVE… It’s not just karma. When you focus your attention on someone else’s wellbeing, it reduces your own stress levels. Check in on an elderly neighbor, volunteer at a local food bank or be a designated driver. What goes around comes around! Home Style

From turkey to tinsel, it’s hectic, it’s crazy, and it’s the perfect time of the year to make our homes inviting for us and for company. Try these five festive and fun ways to get into the holiday spirit.

2

SWEET SCENTS Fire up some fragrance by adding dried apple and orange slices, mature pine cones, cinnamon sticks or dried sage in the fireplace, or just get pure fragrance oils such as cinnamon, banana nut bread, or even lavender, put a few drops on wood and let dry before burning.

4

3

1

YOU’RE WELCOME Let your entryway (or any entrance into your home) say “Welcome!” with a festive tray on a small table, a sprig of greenery, and a cheerful mug or treasured teacup filled with red and green M&Ms—charmingly edible! Time to go, have the takeaway token ready to go on the same table.

GET THE HANG OF IT Wreaths mean growth and ever-lasting life, and always say holiday. Try your fresh or faux greenery over a mirror, on a coffee table, on a stair railing, in a powder room, anywhere you want to spread some fragrance and wonderful holiday cheer. Imagine how much better that TV show will be with that wreath over the sofa!

WONDERLANDS IN GLASS Fill a glass vase or bowl with beads, baubles and festive ornaments for easy and instant “wow!” Layer colorful ornaments, pine cones and faux greenery (it looks real under glass), and add an unexpected touch like a sweet holiday note tucked in with your glass baubles.

5

HELLO NEW YEAR Greet New Year’s with a feeling of calm renewal. Nothing is fresher than white, mixed with a burst of vivid color…especially next to champagne. Think fresh clementines (cheery orange and in season) and white organdy ribbon on a potted white orchid nearby. Have the good cheer ready.

HOLIDAY ESCAPE Sometimes the best gift is making someone feel that you are thrilled to have them visit. Redo a bedroom for the holidays? Why not, when there are so many festive and affordable options. Whether it’s your guestroom (or your room), the simple addition of a beautiful throw and a few pillows will have it looking like an elegant winter getaway. It can also add a touch of drama thrown over a basic sofa or chair.

Festive FOOD Yes, it’s that time of year when friends feast and relatives relish their time together.

Even though we say it’s all about the people, we secretly feel it’s all about the food when we’re the one hosting the party. When we did our friends and family survey, we came up with two events that happen over and over, all year long, yet have to feel oh-so-new every time. Here are our crowd or three-is-a-crowd pleasers.

Six Degrees of Preparation Think three couples or six people, just the in-laws or doubled up for more people. Here’s the dinner that raises the bar on holiday entertaining. While holiday meals often look like heart attacks on a plate, this will have everyone feeling satisfied, yet leaving room for dessert. First, you’re welcome. We have found the best plates to serve everyone so there’s no cutting, slicing etc. once you’re ready to serve. They’re called au gratin dishes, and they are the best individual stainless steel plates you will ever own, whether it’s for chicken parmigiana, shrimp scampi, heating leftovers, or for our spectacularly festive looking red and green halibut (or tilapia for the budget conscious). Amazon has them at every price level and I ordered the $4 ones…perfect. You will use them all year long.

HERE’S THE FESTIVE AND EASY 6-COURSE DINNER PLAN 1. Soup...espresso cups filled with butternut squash or tomato basil soup (buy, do not make). 2.

HOLIDAY HEAVENLY HALIBUT 2 pounds halibut (1/3 pound per person) 2 naval oranges, cut like you would do to a half grapefruit for breakfast (it’s called supreming an orange). 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes (Cento San Marzano is my favorite) 1/2 cup of diced green olives Fry olives, tomatoes and oranges 5-10 minutes low heat (can do the morning of and just refrigerate). Put mixture in bottom of dish, place fish on top (rinsed and patted dry). Add a little breadcrumbs or panko on top, just a bit of olive oil and white balsamic (if you have it, don’t use red balsamic—it ruins color). Salt and pepper. Bake 350 degrees for 10 minutes

Ravioli...just a few for each person, with a very light sauce (check our recipe). If you want to go fancy, go to a local pasta shop and splurge on lobster ravioli or go for honey roasted pumpkin ravioli from Trader Joe’s. All so pretty on a plate.

3. Salad...made with arugula (did you know it has as much vitamins as broccoli), topped with beets and burrata (a kind of mozzarella made with a cream center). Gorgeous. 4. The star…halibut or tilapia cooked with tomatoes, olives and oranges, served individually in a shallow dish or the magical au gratin plates. See recipe on right. 5. Side dish…go really easy, and asparagus or broccoli work well. Barely cook it in advance and then do a quick heat in the microwave for easy and quick serving. 6.

Dessert…remember, they still have room because you planned the meal perfectly. You can assign dessert to one of the guests (hey, you’ve done enough) or just have a back-up of key lime pie decorated with raspberries, and a little piece of dark chocolate for that fancy restaurant feel.

SAUCE FOR LOBSTER RAVIOLI 3 tbsp butter 3 tbsp EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) 1 minced shallot or garlic Sauté for 2 minutes medium heat. Add splash of white wine and a splash of heavy cream. Salt & pepper. Whisk for 2 minutes.

FULLBEAUTY I WINTER 2015 79

YOUR PERSONAL PARTY PLANNER Theme It...from food to decorations, themes create a fun mood. Hey, if Jennifer Aniston can have muppets on a wedding cake, go for that inner child!

Ladies Who Lunch (or Brunch) It’s my favorite meal...you’re allowed to drink fun stuff like bellinis and it’s the easiest meal to prepare. Since there are so many evening parties, your brunch will stand out as the ‘all about us’ party that goes on for hours with fabulous conversation. Plan the menu in food categories (eggs, muffins, etc.) and if you want everyone to bring something, assign each friend the category they would most enjoy preparing (or buying, if they’re not into cooking). Distribute assignments with an eye toward equalizing expense and effort. Ask that items be brought over ready-to-serve (if someone brings bagels or rolls, they should slice them in advance) and appropriate serving pieces if necessary. If you like to do it all yourself, here’s a recipe that lets you be both the host and the guest. This breakfast casserole is a hearty one-dish meal that’s ideal for holidays and special occasions -- perfect when you want to serve a crowd.

EGG, SAUSAGE, HASH BROWN BREAKFAST CASSEROLE 1 lb. pork or turkey sausage 9 large eggs, slightly beaten 3/4 cup milk (2% is fine) 4 tablespoons melted butter (or 2 tbl. butter, 2 olive oil) 24 oz. pkg. hash browns 8 oz. shredded cheddar cheese ½ cup chopped onion salt and pepper Preheat oven to 350°F. Break up sausage meat and discard casings. Layer raw sausage on bottom of a well-buttered 9”x13” pan. Mix milk and melted butter to beaten eggs and pour over sausage. Add hash browns and top with shredded cheese. Bake for one hour. About 4-6 servings. 80 FULLBEAUTY | WINTER 2015

Plan ahead, Do Ahead. The best parties are when the hostess is part of it, so the more food you prepare ahead and freeze, the better. Avoid dishes that require last minute work beyond reheating and garnish. Shop Smart and Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff—literally. If a recipe is complicated and yet makes little impact on the party, forget it. Examples...soup and dips, much easier to buy than make. Don’t serve food that could ruin your furniture or carpet. Examples... red wine, red sauce, red anything! Liquor is the most expensive part of any party, so ask guests to bring a bottle. Specify champagne, wine, beer or vodka and have lots of ice and garnish sliced in advance. Music—assign it out if you don’t have the ability, or put the TV on to your favorite type of music. Creative lighting sets the mood so forget the overheads unless they can be dimmed. Be sure to have plenty of coffee and small snacks for late in the evening.

There’s holiday shopping, parties to go to, festive fashion to buy. The last thing you should be thinking about is taking a vacation...but isn’t that exactly what you deserve? A little time in the sun and some major fun! While you may dream of far off locations with foreign flair, you can get the same feeling much closer to home and, depending on the time you have and the distance, you may just enjoy the journey as much as the destination...

82 FULLBEAUTY | WINTER 2015

we can never say that about flying somewhere. When you’re trying to decide where to go, think time zones and temperatures... Eastern and Florida. Central and Texas, Mountain and Arizona, Pacific and SoCal. Start planning your trip to the sun!

Florida: NAPLES It’s historic, on the water, and has incredible food. Naples shares so many of the qualities with its Italian ancestor, yet it is totally American...right down to the Tommy Bahamas and Starbucks. While it’s known for its expensive real estate, it also has lots of very affordable places to stay, either in Naples or in one of the beach towns up and down the Gulf of Mexico. The gorgeous sunsets are alive with pinks and oranges that will take your breath away.

All the cities on the gulf share a fabulous climate and an easy-going attitude with activities for all ages. The waters are calm, so perfect for younger kids, and the older kids can take airboat rides through the Everglades, or find every imaginable water sport. Golf is among the best in the country and the award-winning relaxation defines what a vacation should feel like. For those who think people watching is as entertaining as whale watching, get ready for a 3-D show of easy elegance...Florida style.

Texas: PADRE ISLAND On the Texas Gulf Coast is South Padre Island, 34 miles of scenic island beauty where you can enjoy quiet romance for two or adventures for everyone in the family, with fishing, whale watching, snorkeling, jet skiing, paddleboarding, kayaking, beach driving, kiteboarding, dolphin adventures and lots more. You can even take sandcastle building lessons!

At night, you’ll find 50 restaurants, seriously good seafood, the largest beach bar in Texas (a state that takes ‘big’ seriously), fireworks on weekends, lots of live music and just about everything for everyone in the friendliest resort you can ever find. FULLBEAUTY | HOLYDAY 2015 A

Arizona: PHOENIX Known as Valley of the Sun, Phoenix is a destination for those who want everything--cowboys to Frank Lloyd Wright--all in perfect winter weather. While there’s not a beach in sight, you really don’t miss it since every hotel has a pool and we all know kids like pools better than beach and adults like being served better than carrying all the stuff down to the beach. There are also gorgeous lakes.

SoCal: SAN DIEGO Sounds like a diet drink, but it’s really just the nickname for Southern California, a concept so big, the region gets its own name.

San Diego has it all…the best weather, great downtown attractions including the world famous zoo and battleship exhibits, and a hop, skip and drive over the bridge to Coronado, a beautiful island with the best rated beaches in the world, charming restaurants, and a relaxing vibe that makes you feel special and secluded.

While some of the ‘adventures’ can be a bit pricey, they will be what memories are made of. Lots of off-road excursions and wild jeep adventures, day trips to Sedona, steamboat cruises and hot air ballooning...and that’s only your first day! Check out the horse shows and the incredible desert flowers, the ghost towns and the not-to-be-missed modern architecture.

Color SCOPE

Did you know that what you wear on New Year’s Eve can help bring you exactly what you want in the coming year? Call it fashion feng shui or clothes karma, but many cultures believe you send messages out to the universe by what you choose to wear on the first night-into-day of 2016. Brazil makes it sexy, of course. They always wear white, but it’s about what they wear under their clothes that sends out their wishes (and we know Brazilian girls get what they want). Choose a color and make a wish.

WHITE FOR PEACE No surprise here, think white dove, virginal brides, and angels in flowing gowns. Wear white to represent light and innocence and help bring world peace, or maybe just peace in your house.

YELLOW FOR PROSPERITY

RED FOR PASSION

PINK FOR LOVE

Happy, warm and expansive, yellow stimulates the intellect and can result in attracting prosperity. Think abundance and richness, eliciting hope and optimism.

Why wait for Valentine’s Day to communicate passion? Start the year off right and let it be known that you are ready for whatever (or whoever) life brings. Your ‘essence’ will be out there.

ORANGE FOR HAPPINESS

BLUE FOR INTIMACY

GOLD FOR WEALTH

Cheerful and sociable, orange helps us, and those around us, be just a little happier. Caution, orange is also a fertility color, accounting for its happiness connection (at least in some cases).

Blue (especially dark blue) symbolizes dependability, trustworthiness, and security. It also increases creativity and contemplation, so get ready to have your secret dreams come true.

Treasure, grandeur, prosperity, sparkle, glitz, and glamour. You may just have a year of wealth when you start it off looking like a million dollars.

GREEN FOR HOPE

PURPLE FOR RESPECT

When we think balance and harmony, it’s always green. Calming, healing, relaxing and tranquil, it makes those around you feel instantly attracted to a positive energy, inspiring and optimistic.

Purple means royalty, so try one of the many fabulous shades of purple to get respect and the ‘royal’ treatment. Lavender for a feminine feel and dark like plum for some serious ‘bowing’.

86 FULLBEAUTY | WINTER 2015

You look how you feel, and wearing pink makes you look and feel feminine. It’s no surprise that wearing pink “underneath” will help bring love to you in the new year.

BROWN FOR STABILITY Brown brings a certain grounding into our lives, decreasing stress and bringing more stability. Shades of brown are also some of the sexiest colors to wear… like chocolate, it looks delicious!
