STYLE ICONS

“Miss Bank, what are the

DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS IN YOUR LIFE?” Tiffany Bank is a plus size model, actress and author – and is always radiating with zest and positive energy. How she manages it all? She figured out early on what life is all about. Here is our chat about the modelling business, a confident body image and (of course) fashion.

She moved from California to New York to become a model and rose to stardom in the US in the reality show “Big Sexy”: Tiffany Bank.

STYLE ICONS

Tiffany Bank An exclusive interview with navabi

as it always your dream to become a model? I knew when I was growing up I wanted to be in front of the camera so I did a lot of stage plays in school and joined acting and theater clubs. I didn‘t realize modeling would even be an option for me until my mentor inspired me to do so. Then it started to mean everything to me and I love it! How did you get started in the business? I came to New York from California not having any plans and realized that NYC was the place to get started. I volunteered at photo shoots and plus size modeling events just to network and get an idea of the

industry. After a year of networking and working mostly for free to gain experience I got signed to an agency and started to work my way up from there. You are a plus size model, writer and actress. What‘s the one thing you like doing most? It‘s hard to answer that. I love modeling for so many reasons that are near and dear to me. I also love acting and being on stage or on a TV set because I love the action and being interactive. If I can just continue to keep doing what I‘m doing, I‘m happy!

What are the dreams and aspirations in your life?

W

“I read a quote that I really could relate to which said ‘Vision is day dreaming with both feet on the ground’ . I really am trying to realize my vision and work as hard as I can to make my dreams come true. I look back at all I‘ve been able to do and I think I‘m living out my dreams and aspirations as we speak.”

STYLE ICONS

As a plus size model, you deal with fashion every day. How would you describe your own style? People tell me I‘m a classic bohemian. I like to keep things simple yet sassy and add touches of my personality with my wardrobe with accessories and jewelry. What are the must-haves in your war drobe? Basics! Leggings, tank tops, a little black dress, cardigans, jeans, etc... I like to layer and mix and match my clothes so I keep things pretty basic. I also think it‘s fun to mix and match patterns and fabrics. It’s almost 2013, there are no rules to fashion! You always come across very confident and happy. Is there anything you would like to share when it comes to a positive body image? I think it‘s really important to just do what makes you happy and love and appreciate

who you are. We compare ourselves to each other instead of focusing on our indi viduality and celebrating the wonderful things that make us who we are. I think women, especially the younger generation of girls and teens, should be reminded of the beautiful qualities they have instead of focusing on what they don‘t have. Every woman is beautiful, regardless of shape, size, background and age. That‘s what makes us all unique and it‘s time to liberate ourselves and just enjoy what we have!! Who do you look up to the most? Any role models? I‘m inspired daily by the everyday woman, the women in my family and the pioneers of the industry, especially my mentor Velvet. All of them give me such hope and strength as a model trying to make it in the industry and as a woman trying to navigate through the everyday challenges and successes.

ITALY Irrelevant of whether man or woman, in the land of pizza and pasta, red underwear is a must on New Year‘s Eve for anyone who wants a happy and successful start in the New Year.

GREECE Here the night before the New Year is all about gambling! Games of luck are played with cards or dice until late in the night for money.

GERMANY The Germans like to celebrate the New Year with a bang! Several million euros are spent annually for fireworks & friends.

SPAIN There can be no New Year’s Eve without grapes! On the Iberian Peninsula, a grape is eaten at every strike of the clock at midnight.

STYLE ADVICE

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER… What are your plans for New Year’s Eve? No matter where you are headed, the night will be a long one – and one of these three make-up looks would love to accompany you!

STYLE ADVICE

For a grand entrance… Blood-red lipstick and black eyeliner – it does not get any more glamorous! FOR YOUR BASE: Apply a light foundation (e.g. “Photo‘Perfexion” by Givenchy) and then a rouge in a pinkish-orange on the cheek bones (such as “Pastel Compact Translucent Light” by Max Factor). FOR YOUR EYES: Apply a subtle eye shadow to make the lid matt, then add a liquid eyeliner (such as “Cream Liner” by Kryolan). Create a subtle wedge shape towards the outer corner of the eye! Generously apply mascara.

© Zizzi

FOR YOUR LIPS: Use concealer as a base and lip liner for the perfect contour. Add a deep red lipstick (such as “Lipstick 208” by Artdeco) and blend with the liner. Create a matt finish with coloured powder (such as “Pigment” by MAC).

GOES WITH: This more striking make-up looks best worn with subtle clothing so that it can really take centre stage. What better piece to do so than a black dress?

STYLE ADVICE

Shimmering reflection Bronze tones will do more than make your eyes twinkle, they are also more on trend than ever. FOR YOUR BASE: Choose a long-lasting foundation (like “SuperStay” make-up by Maybelline) and a pink coloured rouge (like “Sheer Blush Beige Violet” by Giorgio Armani)

© Zizzi

FOR YOUR EYES: Apply a golden eye shadow up to the eye brows and then a darker bronze hue on the lid (like the eye shadow duo “Ochre” by Maybelline). Gently blend the transition between the two colours and conclude by applying a black mascara to the lashes. FOR YOUR LIPS: Choose a discreet lipstick that makes your lips look like they have not been made up (like “Bare Bohemian” by Isadora) and then outline the lips in a slightly darker shade and gently blend.

GOES WITH: Complete your make-up with a smart outfit! Wear, e.g. a pencil skirt with a bronze-coloured chiffon blouse. Should the weather get a bit chilly, simply throw over a blazer.

STYLE ADVICE

Naturally elegant If a stunning red pout & co. are too OTT for you, you are going to love this option! FOR YOUR BASE: Choose a foundation (like “Perfect Match Foundation” by L’Oreal Paris) that matches your natural complexion and melds with your skin. This will make you look fresh and radiant without looking too made up. Opt for a rouge in a gentle peach tone – this will give you a refreshed glow! FOR YOUR EYES: Wear brown mascara and shape your eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil (such as “Superfine Liner for Brows” by Clinique).

© Zizzi

FOR YOUR LIPS: A few dabs of subtle lip gloss will create a glossy pout without looking overdone.

GOES WITH: Natural make-up looks lovely combined with outfits in muted colours. Worn with elegant cloth trousers and a breezy flounced blouse, you will be both chic and comfortable!

BEHIND THE BRAND

BEHIND THE BRAND

SILK THREADS The origins of the international label

Ruby Bhandari founded the label Silk Threads for personal reasons; she was spurred by a desire for stylish, ethnic clothing which reflected both her Indian roots and her Western understanding of fashion. Already when in school, her traditional outfits had been admired by her Ameri can friends so she began designing clothing for her fellow classmates. Her career took off while she was studying business and was also planning her own wedding. She designed not only her own wedding dress, but also the entire festive attire for her wedding celebration. Her creations resulted in such positive feedback and requests for more that she then founded her very own label, Silk Threads.

Since then, she has continued to design with the same passion in Texas and produces her collections in her own environmentally friendly factory in India. Her focus is on high-quality handwork, details in design and subtle colours. The designer finds her inspiration in her garden, in flowers and in the colours of nature. Ruby Bhandari‘s fashion design and her business sense has bestowed her with a number of awards such as her recently being named “En trepreneur of the Year” by the Asian-American Chamber of Commerce.
