sustained periods of time, it is quite nice just to pop in and visit every now and then. As we glide on into the seasonal frivolity, champagne tends to bubble towards the top of the shopping list. Always there to assist, we’ve put together the ultimate guide, the only one you’ll need to see you sorted over the Christmas holiday period. And as New Zealand’s No. 1 exponent of the good stuff, with the largest and most diverse range of authentic champagnes you’ll find in the country, why wouldn’t we? We have, from day one, imported our champagnes in refrigerated, temperature-controlled containers, something that is vital when it comes to ensuring that they reach your door in pristine condition. We also purchase only from reputable sources, given the shoddy practices associated with parallel importation can take the fizz out of your bubbles quicker than a popping cork; or in this case, one that won’t. There are many options; from the sleek million-dollar brands to the intriguing independent Grower champagnes, the groundbreaking left-fielders to the aspirational Prestige Cuvées. Our range is immense; the following pages are by no means all of it. Dive in.

PIPER-HEIDSIECK RARE 2002

CHAMPAGNE

$299.00

The bottle is extraordinary. Made only in exceptional years from toprated crus, this is Piper’s pièce de résistance, a 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir blend that is vibrantly opulent and downright ethereal.

There is a certain blushing, ethereal quality to rosé champagne that is quite appealing. Made from the same grapes as their more standard siblings, rosé champagnes are produced by either blending in small portions of red wine and putting it through the second fermentation, or by giving the red varieties minimal skin contact to extract the pink colour, otherwise known as the saignée method. There is a noticeable richness to these wines, a distinct weight and vibrancy to the red fruit flavours.

CASE OF 6 $54.99 A BOT TLE

A gentle first pressing of the grapes gives this its stained-glass hues. No filtering and Drappier’s hallmark low dosage. Vibrantly fresh, with satin textures and a rich palate of red fruits, violets and spice.

The most recent exceptional vintage, the other this decade, the 2002, all but sold out. 2008 was a pretty average year in terms of weather in Champagne; not overly warm, though not too cold either – a pretty standard year, then, which in this particular region means rather cool. The resulting wines have lively, vibrant acidity and a rich and powerful fruit profile, the various elements beautifully integrated. It is the balance that is a hallmark of this vintage, that makes these wines excellent contenders for longterm cellaring. Think 2020-2030.

ANDRÉ JACQUART CHAMPAGNE EXPERIENCE PREMIER CRU BLANC DE BLANCS BRUT NV 48390

In the UK and New York, many of the top wine lists are now 100% Grower champagnes, the family enterprises, often stretching back over generations, who own their own vineyards in the heart of the Champagne appellation, from

$54.99

where they grow the grapes to make their own wine, often bottling it on the premises as well. If it’s individuality and

48380

character you’re after, the Grower champagnes have that

in spades. Lacking the gargantuan resources of the big

players, they are more reliant on the characters to be found within particular vintages and locations, and some would say they are all the better for it.

Yellow sun, pink drink. So many hues to choose... Shall we go French? Or Marlborough? Fear not, there are no bad decisions here. But take care not to get sunburnt while reclining in the heat on your canvas chaise longue, sipping your rosé of choice – let’s leave the smouldering glow where it belongs: in the glass. Want more? We have ‘em, by the score. Just go to glengarry.co.nz/rose

Beyond the air of largesse that it invokes, the magnum’s size (1.5 litres) is actually ideal; because of the reduced exposure of the wine to light and to the cork, you end up with more complexity and less oxidation. Thanks to the greater surface area of glass involved, it also means there is more contact between the yeast cells on the inside of the

With an abundance of craft brewers now on the market, we’re delighted to tip our hat to one of the Kiwi originals. Richard Emerson returned to NZ in 1992 with a newly acquired thirst for the brews he’d become accustomed to enjoying overseas. In the Land of No. 8 Wire, what else was a good Kiwi boy going to do but put his food science skills to good use and start experimenting. These days Emerson’s are still based in Dunedin where they began, they’re just a little larger and swankier now, but still very much craft-oriented and turning out the smaller, more experimental brews. The hallmark of the Emerson’s range is vibrant flavours married with evocative aromatics, all of them distinctively balanced and true to their ideals.
