NEWZEALAND
The 2024 vintage in New Zealand is one of the best ever. We explore the ins and outs and what it means for local wine buffs
We recently caught up with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc star Jules Taylor and had the chance to try her 2024 Sauvignon Blanc. It’s excellent! During our conversation, Jules proclaimed, ‘If you made bad wine in 2024, you shouldn’t be a winemaker.’ That statement alone sums up the 2024 vintage in New Zealand.
Across all regions, the vintage is exceptional. Most areas experienced lower yields, some by as much as 40%, due to inconsistent weather during the flowering season. Central Otago, though, was spared, maintaining average yields for the region.
Though smaller, this vintage is beautiful. The El Niño weather pattern, which
settled in mid-December, brought dry, stable conditions through to harvest.
Drawing conclusions about a vintage as a whole can be tricky, given the differing conditions in regions and varieties, but the 2024 wines are undoubtedly bright, forward, and highly aromatic. The cool nights leading into autumn enhanced these qualities just prior to harvest.
While the market has faced challenges lately, a smaller harvest could help balance supply and demand. As for the exceptional quality of the vintage, let’s keep that between us. We wouldn’t want to upset that delicate balance just yet.

MAN O' WAR
WAIHEKE 2024
Man O’ War is a superbly positioned piece of island paradise, with around 90 separate vineyard blocks across the eastern end of Waiheke and on Ponui.
Individual blocks enjoy distinctive soil types and micro-climates.
White varieties have been sited high on the exposed volcanic hilltops to catch cooling sea breezes, extending their growing season and delivering concentration and minerality.
The red vines cascade down steep, sheltered clay hillsides, where the heat and drainage promote intensity and depth. Old World techniques combine with a New World approach to create unique expressions of this outstanding island terroir.
The mighty Man O' War have a bunch of bright new releases of their classic hits, and we're here to get them to you
FONTANAFREDDA THE SUPREME STYLE OF
Originally purchased by the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, as a hunting retreat, Fontanafredda is one of the great names of Piedmontese winemaking.
The 250-acre estate sits in the middle of Piedmont's Langhe Hills, the vineyards planted on these gently undulating slopes responsible for Italy's version of Bordeaux reds, the muscular, brooding, long-lived wines of Barolo and Barbera that are forged from the Nebbiolo grape.
With Robert Parker rating the majority of Fontanafredda's output in the 90-point category, it is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the greatest producers of one of the world's greatest wine styles.
While majestic nineteenth-century cellars host the reds for aging, Fontanafredda also owns shiny new buildings equipped with all the technology necessary to bring out the best in the region's white sparkling wines.

WHY THESE ARE
FUNCTION WINES
When planning a function, a common mistake we see is the attempt to cater to everyone's specific tastes; the result can be a lineup of various wines, many barely touched, with an excess left over. This is where function-friendly wines come in handy.
For a sparkling option, Saint-Meyland is ideal. It's a traditionally fermented sparkling wine with just the right touch of dosage, making it enjoyable to sip throughout the evening. You don’t want something that’s overly acidic and difficult to drink all night.
Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc is another fantastic function wine. Sauvignon drinkers love it, and everyone else will be perfectly content because it's simply delicious, especially the newly released 2024 vintage

TAMNAVULIN
50 years of exceptional Speyside single malt
whiskies
The Tamnavulin distillery is located deep in the heart of Speyside. Tucked away on the edge of the River Livet, the small group of skilled, craftsmen and women at Tamnavulin Distillery began creating the signature Speyside malt over 50 years ago.
Water is derived from underground springs in the Easterton hills formed by snowmelt from the surrounding Cairngorm mountains. This water is naturally filtered through ancient limestone rock before reaching the distillery, resulting in some of the purest spring water to be found in Scotland.
Oak barrels are hand selected, including bourbon casks from North America and sherry casks from Spain, to ensure their influence will perfectly complement and enhance the rich, smooth, mellow characteristics of Tamnavulin. The cask collection goes back to the 1960s when the distillery was first built.
Once filled with new-make spirit, the casks rest in Tamnavulin's cool, dark warehouses for a number of years. Over time, the whiskies gain their colour and flavour from the casks until they have achieved their exquisite flavour profiles.
