ITALY

Easily one of the best wine producing countries in the world, Italy has been doing it now for some 4,000 years, and in that albeit short time frame they have commanded the skills required to handle over 650 unique varieties. Known around the world as the masters of well-known styles such as Barolo, Chianti and Prosecco – just to name a few – the choices are endless.

In the northeast of Veneto, Prosecco and Pinot Grigio reign supreme. Further south in Tuscany, the sun shines like nowhere else, creating the perfect environment for Chianti and Brunello Di Montalcino (not to forget the more well-known varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot). Towards the south, Puglia is the perfect place for Primitivo and Negroamaro wines – with a delicious bowl of homemade pasta, how could you argue?

The Piedmont region produces world-class Barolos and Moscato d’Asti to go with those after dinner treats. For those of us looking for a mid-winter white, Arneis and Gavi are the local go-to; and while we dream of warmer days, the Abruzzo region offers mouthwatering Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wines while hunkering down during those dark, rainy nights.

Spoilt for choice for variety and price, Italy offers something for everyone.

Like their neighbours to the north and east, Spain is regarded as one of the top wine producing countries in the world. With sizzling hot summers and cooler winters, Spain’s weather and geography is ideal to produce outstanding wines across the board. With over 140 official designations you can’t miss the countless wineries tucked away in a picture-perfect paradise.

To the northeast, surrounded by lush green valleys in the mountains and hugging the coastline, the regions of Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra and Bierzo are the ideal places for

such varieties as Albarino and Godello, the perfect match for fresh fish dishes and tasty garden salads.

Heading slightly south, we stumble upon Ebro and Duero River Valleys where, if you've started exploring Spanish wines, you've likely had a bottle of Tempranillo. The most planted red grape in Spain, it appears under a few names, including Tinto Fino, Tinto de Toro and Tinto del País.

The Mediterranean Coast is a dream setting for many, no surprise given that it's ...

CHÂTEAU BEL AIR

Holding court at the heart of France's vinous universe, the aristocratic Bordeaux boasts a peerless pedigree. Some of its best value wines are crafted by the petits (small) châteaux. They offer serious, estate grown and bottled wines crafted by quality conscious individuals. These producers work hard at upping the stakes, and many are delivering earlier drinking, riper styles that allow a user-friendly route into the complex world of Bordeaux wine appreciation.

Our fastidious approach to selecting these wines ensures that there is quality in every sip, with all the wines tasted and assessed before we import them in refrigerated containers, ensuring that your wine is in the best condition when it gets to you.

Ripe Cabernet Sauvignon tends to exude cassis fruit characters. You’ll generally feel the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon around the outside of your mouth. Merlot is all about the middle of your palate, the tannins and acidity softer. There are plum fruit notes and mocha characters.

Generally you’ll find the wines of Bordeaux are blends; for petits chateaux, they tend to be Merlot-dominant, regardless of where they come from.

The Merlot gives the mid-palate and the Cabernet Sauvignon the structural frame.

Once you know your producers and their reputation (which, because it’s our job, we do) you can bag some gorgeous wines without killing your credit rating.

FORTIFIED LET'S GET VINTAGE VIBES, MODERN SWAG

Forget the old stereotypes—fortified wines are shedding their outdated image and making a vibrant comeback in today’s wine scene. No longer just for grandparents or those in smoking jackets, fortified wines are reclaiming their place as trendy, sophisticated beverages that appeal to modern tastes and preferences.

VINTAGE PORT 2017

Port wine, hailing from Portugal's scenic Douro Valley, is making a major comeback with its rich, complex flavours that appeal to modern tastes. These fortified wines are famous for their depth and versatility, catering to wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Tawny ports, aged in oak barrels for extended periods, develop a deep amber colour and boast flavours of caramel, dried fruits, and nuts. The aging process gives them a smooth, velvety texture and a complex taste that keeps evolving with every sip. You'll find options like 10, 20, and 40-year-old tawnies, each offering a different level of flavour intensity and maturity for every palate.

Ruby ports, on the other hand, are bold and youthful, with a bright red colour and fruity aromas of berries and cherries ... Douro Valley, is making a major come worldwide.

MADEIRA

Madeira is a fortified sweet wine made from a number of varieties. The four main grapes, from driest to sweetest, are Verdelho, Sercial, Boal and Malvasia. When the desired sweetness level is reached, alcoholic fermentation is stopped via the addition of a neutral grape spirit.

JUSTINO'S BOAL

VERDELHO SERCIAL MALVASIA

Madeira's styles and sweetness range from the salty tang of Sercial to the rich, nutty character of Malvasia. Time to get tasting!

Madeira makes a wonderful aperitif, the drier styles chilled to around 12⁰C. Sweeter styles can be served cooler and are a perfect way to finish any meal; they match very well with desserts. The versatility of Madeira makes it an amazing addition to a degustation menu ...

One of the world’s most versatile, underrated and misunderstood wines

No grandma’s drink, sherry’s varying styles are hugely versatile as an aperitif, an accompaniment to dinner or after a meal.

These wines are largely a product of the Palomino grape and what happens to it when it sits in the sun and the blindingly white chalk soils of Cádiz.

Power and depth occur as if by magic, as does the remarkable finesse that makes these wines fascinating to drink.

From the subtle and elegant marriage of wine and wood that is Fino to the tangy Oloroso styles or the opulently nutty Pedro Ximénez, there is much to savour within this steadily blossoming category ...

By Josh Scott

Josh Scott, of Allan Scott Wines, has made an inspired leap into the world of natural wine. These are low intervention, meaning there are no additives and the wines are unfined and unfiltered. It’s about allowing the natural grape to shine through.

The By Josh Scott wines are traditionally styled but crafted with creative flair. The rosé is a co-ferment of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Pinot Gris, the Sauvignon Blanc has some skin contact that rounds out and dials down the acid, and the sparkling offering is a pét-nat, made exclusively from Chardonnay and delivering a wonderfully fizzy wine with echoes of stonefruit.

These are modern-leaning wines that are fun, fresh and a joy to drink. While natural wine can feel a slightly daunting category, it can nevertheless be an alluring avenue for those looking to dip into the intrigue of something new and innovative that harnesses age-old systems of winemaking.

Santa Julia

Headed up by Julia Zuccardi, third generation scion of one of Argentina's most notable winemaking families, Santa Julia create wines mindful of their environment, with two of their three vineyards certified organic and the third on the way.

This dedication to sustainability hugely influences the wines Santa Julia create, and is why you’ll find an intriguing and stylish pair of natural wines in their range. Having undergone minimal intervention, had no sulfites added and in their most natural form, the two wines are authentic expressions of their unique Argentinian terroir.

Santa Julia’s natural offerings consist of a Blanco Natural made from Argentina’s indigenous Torrentes grape and a red made from Malbec. The La Ojevas Torrentes offers

a delicious citrusy, fruity and fresh profile that feels familiar, but is decidedly different.

The red ‘Le Burro’ is a Malbec that rises to the occasion when slightly chilled – we’re talking ripe red and black fruits and a moreish spicy finish. It’s a staple for all seasons, as a winter warmer, or when served chilled as a great addition to spring and summer barbecues.

While this pair might differ from what you typically see on the shelf, they are the perfect wines for those who love a natural approach, or are into exploring a new category. They are unique and flavoursome wines, and a delightful reflection of the land they’re grown on.

Santa Julia La Ojeva Blanco Natural 2023

Santa Julia El Burro Malbec Natural 2023

Least possible intervention between vineyard and glass. No sulphites, bottled unfiltered. Generous, fruit forward wine, notes of violets, red and black fruits, a vibrant, spicy finish.

Cassels of Christchurch is yet another example of that typical New Zealand ethos of doing it yourself. From humble passions, Alasdair Cassels stoked his burning beginnings by building his own wood-fired brewery. Taking inspiration from a model he had seen from Germany, Alasdair and brother Ian designed and built their first large scale brick and steel wood-fired kettle, for heating the liquor with which to brew the beer.

Since 2009, Cassels has been brewing beer out of the original Christchurch tannery in Woolston, and since 2010 has been winning awards for them, starting with a bronze medal for their dunkel at the BrewNZ awards, and most recently in the 2022 World Beer awards with two beers – Gold and Best in the World for their Milk Stout, and Gold for their Nectaron IPA. It should be noted that from 2019, the Milk Stout won the Best Stout in the World award at the World Beer Awards for four years running, only ending their streak in 2023.
