SCOTT BASE - SUPPORTING HILLARY'S HERITAGE
To high-five the synergy between Antarctica's Scott Base and their affectionately-named Scott Base vineyard in Cromwell, Marlborough's Allan Scott Family Winemakers formed a partnership with the Antarctic Heritage Trust, which is dedicated to preserving the buildings and heritage status of Antarctica. The family donate a percentage of sales of their Scott Base wines to the trust and provide wines for events and ongoing activities. So there you go: buy one of these beauties and you'll be contributing in your own small way to the maintenance of Sir Ed's proud legacy. Makes us all warm inside just thinking about it. Read More..
CHILE PART 2
LAPOSTOLLE Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle, greatgranddaughter of the creator of Grand Marnier, is the force behind Lapostolle, a spectacular winery overlooking the Apalta Vineyard in the Colchagua Valley in Chile. The Marnier Lapostolle family are famous for their spirits and liqueurs, but they have also been involved with winemaking for generations. The Chilean chapter of the family business was founded by Alexandra and her husband, Cyril de Bournet, in 1994. The winery is now managed by 7thgeneration Charles-Henri de Bournet. The Lapostolle vineyards in Apalta are certified organic and biodynamic, though the wines are not labelled that way, as it is the grapes that are certified, not the winery. The wines are very much Chilean terroir blended with French
expertise. The consultant is Michel Rolland, well-known in Bordeaux. They are wines that have been seen in New Zealand before, though not for many years. The top label, Clos Apalta, is not in the latest shipment, as it takes a different route to market, going through Bordeaux. Lapostolle possess a stunning state-of-the-art winery, plus a five-star hotel and resort. Read more ....
MONTES Pioneers of premium and ultra-premium wines within Chile, Montes were pioneers in betting on the Apalta Valley and with planting vineyards on mountain slopes, in the process creating the benchmark for Chile's winemaking industry. One of South America’s most highly-
regarded producers, Wine Spectator referred to Montes as ‘the best all-round winery in South America’ while the lofty Decanter described their Alpha Cabernet as 'one of the best for its price anywhere in the world.' Chairman Aurelio Montes takes all this in his globe-straddling stride. Together with the late Douglas Murray, he started the ball rolling in 1987 to showcase to the world Chile’s hitherto untapped potential for premium winemaking. This is not to say Montes are stuck in the past; they continue to innovate and are currently creating some of the best wines they have ever made. Montes also harbour a commitment to sustainability, seeking to reduce their winemaking footprint by creating biological corridors that encourage beneficial insects and provide natural pest control, and grazing animals to control the growth of weeds and improve soil fertility. CASA MARIN Located in the San Antonio Valley, Casa Márin's owner and winemaker is the determined María Lutz. María believed she could make world-class Sauvignon Blanc there. In Chile, to own a winery, you either inherit it or you have investors. María could not convince anyone to invest in her project, and didn’t come from money. Instead, she worked in the bulk wine market and was very good at it. There, she accumulated enough to start her winery, and has subsequently made a global name for her wines. Her son, Felipe Márin, is now the winemaker and his wife Jamie the marketing manager. Not particularly cheap, the Casa Márin wines are markedly different to the standard Chilean style; via the steepness, the soil and proximity to the sea, they are much cooler in nature. The first woman to own a winery in Chile (the only one in the San
Maria-Luz and son, Felipe Marin
Antonio Valley) got there by herself, when everyone told her she couldn’t. Read More..
ALMAVIVA A joint venture between France's Rothschild family and Chile's Concha y Toro family, Almaviva began life in 1996 when Baron Philippe de Rothschild set out to look for the best vineyard in Chile, in order to produce a Chilean Cabernet-based wine that would sit comfortably alongside the very best classified wines in Bordeaux. The site he found was Puente Alto, a vineyard right in the heart of Santiago. Located in the highest part of Maipo Valley in Chile’s central zone, in a location with ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, the
vineyard had been in the Concha y Toro family for years, and the two families agreed to establish Almaviva together. Managed independently from Viùa Concha y Toro, Almaviva is one of Chile's premium vinous icons. Almaviva was the first wine in Chile created under the French Château concept, taking into account an exceptional terroir, a unique bodega and a technical team. The label pays homage to Chile’s ancestral history, with a stylized design symbolizing the vision of the earth and the cosmos in the Mapuche civilization. Read More..

VINA AQUITANIA WITH EDUARDO DE SOLMINIHAC | AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON Vina Aquitania was one of the first boutique wineries in Chile. Margaux). They partnered with Felipe de Solminihac, a renowned Chilean agronomist, oenologist and winemaker. In 2002 the fourth Musketeer joined the group, Ghislain de Montgolfier (Champagne Bollinger). With such an incredible team it's no surprise these wines are fantastic and very distinctive. All the vines are ungrafted, with strong intensity, finesse, elegance and soft tannins as the main characteristics. The wines are also extremely
well priced for the quality. They will be presented by Felipe's son, their Commercial Director, Eduardo de Solminihac. We will be tasting almost everything they make, from their Riserva range; RosĂŠ, Carmenere and their Cabernet Sauvignon. Then from the premium SOL de SOL range, Brut Nature, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and their flagship wine Lazul Cabernet Sauvignon. There is something here for everybody to enjoy.
