CLASSIC MARTINBOROUGH - MARTINBOROUGH VINEYARD

The journey from Martinborough Vineyard's beginnings back in 1980 to the highly-regarded vineyard of today has been a long and spectacular one. The first winery to plant Pinot Noir grapes in the iconic wine region, today it is home to the oldest vines in the district. Launched in 2002, Te Tera is the companion label to the top-tier Martinborough Vineyard wines, sourcing vineyards that are up to 24 years old to craft its youthful and expressive portfolio. The Russian Jack wines make up the third arm of the Martinborough Vineyard trio, named in tribute to a local pioneering entity and currently accessing the highly lauded Burnt Spur fruit for its wines. CHILE PART 1

VINA AQUITANIA Aquitania – pronounced 'Ak-a-tania' – is a joint venture between Chile and France. In 1984, Chateau Cos d’Estournel's Bruno Prats and the

now late Paul Pontallier of Chateau Margaux started looking for top terroir in Chile. They had a mutual friend in Felipe de Solminihac, a Chilean winemaker of French origin, who led them to the site they own today. The vineyard, Quebrada de Macul, is located right in the heart of the Maipo Valley. During his daily travels past it, Felipe remained aware this was the very best part of the region. The vines, of Bordeaux origin, were planted and the winery finished in 1993. From Aquitania comes French inspired winemaking off old vines in the heart of the Maipo valley. They are so deeply within the centre of Santiago that the city has grown to surround them. These are exceptional wines, much more restrained than the stereotypical styles that can come from this region. In 2002, a fourth partner joined the founders, longtime friend Ghislain de Montgolfier from Champagne. On the Aquitania labels you’ll find the signatures of all four. Read more ....

EMILIANA Founded by Chile’s Guilisasti family, the inspirational Emiliana Organic Vineyards are located in Chile's Casablanca Valley, and own vineyards in some of Chile's best winemaking areas. Their organic and biodynamic way of winemaking started out as a trial. When they saw the resulting difference in their wines, not to mention in their people, they started moving more and more vineyards over. For the team at Emiliana, this is a comprehensive, interlocking system that involves the creation of balanced vineyard ecosystems within which a host of animals, birds, insects and plants play a part in the maintenance of vineyard balance, acting as natural pesticides, weed killers and compost producers. Emiliana staff are guaranteed a fair wage, the workers offered technical scholarships and provided with land to grow their own organically-cultivated fruit and vegetables. The wines themselves are very accomplished: expressive, fragrant, clean and cooler in style, owing to the proximity of the sea. Read More..

VINA CHADWICK Located in the Aconchagua Valley, the Errazuriz estate is the vinous obsession of Eduardo Chadwick, widely acknowledged as the driving force behind Chilean wine. Vina Chadwick are considered the first family of the country's wine industry. In 2004, frustrated by a lack of global recognition, Eduardo organised a comparative tasting in Berlin. In the tasting, which included first growths and other international benchmarks, Eduardo’s wines topped the list. The biodynamic Sena, a joint venture with California's wine royalty, the Mondavi family, is part of Eduardo's stable of brands. The Errazuriz property is a spectacular marriage of the old and the new, with the original 1870-era winery situated atop the tunnels housing cellars and barrel storage. Beside it, among the 600ha of vineyards, sits the new winery, environmentally created to recirculate air, chill it with the water from the hills and naturally cool the building. Read More..

SPIRITUAL GUIDE – CALVADOS, NEWTON'S CONUNDRUM ABOUTWINE

If a young Isaac Newton had been sitting beneath one of Christian Drouin’s apple trees, the fateful collision from above would have led to quite a different result. The rogue apple, encased in a decanter bottle, would have caused a concussion much sooner than the discovery of gravity. Fanciful daydreams aside, Drouin’s Pomme Prisonniere is quite literally an imprisoned apple. The fruit is grown from bud to ripeness
