Lordy, they come around quick don’t they? Once again, Christmas is looming towards us like some frantic freight train of baubles, indigestion and unresolved family issues. However. Let’s all put on our jolly faces and get with the programme. For the children. Obviously there’s nothing in here for them, but there needs to be some sort of reward for the bigger folk (that’s you) for making it through another year. So here we are, once again, with a selection of scintillating sippers to sooth your soul as you celebrate your way out of 2016 and into 2017. To encapsulate: we have the Festive Set, a no-gaps collection to cover the diverse desires of your invited guests; the Christmas Classics, six tried-and-true tipples that have long been celebratory institutions; half a dozen of the finest Pinot Noir wines from New Zealand’s Pinot Noir hub, Central Otago; a scintillating quartet of Kiwi wine’s emerging hero, Syrah; some of the Douro Valley’s finest ports; and finally, a trio of Bordeaux’ superb sweet wine offerings. Of course that’s not all of it. You will find stories on the brilliant champagne house, Moutard, and New Zealand’s own virtuoso winemaker, Jules Taylor, a selection of summer reds, rosés and whites to whet your vinous appetite, an intriguing matchup between Kiwi crafties Garage Project and Jameson Irish Whiskey, a short background to the interesting origins of rum and nifty offerings from Marlborough’s Zephyr winery and Central Otago’s Mount Edward, along with all the usuals. Merry Christmas. Relax. Enjoy the sun. Take care on the roads and in the water.

There are those amongst us who can’t rest easy until they have assembled the complete set. Bridge dealers, for instance, cannot fully relax when they’re only holding 51 cards; conscientious homemakers might feel a tug of anxiety when, post laundry, they are only able to find one sock. So, community-minded folk that we are, we’ve decided to assemble a no-gaps set of vinos to cover off your Christmas Day jitters, every one a gem: Whether it’s some champers for bubbly Auntie Sal, a nice, creamy Chardonnay for cousin Finn (who can’t abide the stringency of Sauvignon Blanc), a good Bordeaux for non-Pinot fan Uncle Tane or a brandy for Old Granny Jenkins, who just loathes wine in all its forms. Of course, you better grab a few beers while you’re at it. Just in case.

Tradition. That’s what The Big Day is all about. Families and friends assembling in one spot to rake over all the things they’ve bottled up during the previous year, the process oiled of course by a glass of something (because let’s face it, it’s better out than in). And accompanying that very fine ritual, there are particular tipples that are go-tos for many of you, the sort of things often only purchased at this time of the year: Bailey’s, Johnnie Walker, Bombay; names that are embedded in the communal consciousness. Below, we’ve assembled a number of these iconic sippers for your potential enjoyment. Off to the bach? Take the case, perhaps.

The increasingly popular noble red variety of the northern Rhône is emerging as one of the world’s great red wines. In New Zealand it is predominantly grown in the North Island, with around 70% of that in Hawkes Bay. Not dissimilar to the styles found within the Rhône, the NZ models offer vibrant aromatics and flavours in a sweep of crunchy berry, plum and floral notes laced with pepper and coupled to a refined savoury structure. Below are excellent examples of the local genre, any one of which would do justice to your Christmas table (although we’d recommend that you cellar the Brookfields to realise its true potential).
Undoubtedly this country’s most successful red varietal, in terms of production and exports. In Central Otago, New Zealand’s only true ‘continental climate’ wine region, Pinot Noir is the most dominant variety, accounting for 70 percent of its grapes and a third of New Zealand’s total plantings. Although given a run for its money by the likes of Martinborough and Marlborough, Central Otago has staked its claim in no uncertain terms as the centre of the Kiwi Pinot Noir universe. There are some iconic names to be found in these parts. Here are some of them.

A unique expression of its north-facing site, vibrantly sweet and spicy, the intensely flavoured fruit exuding herb-tinged notes of pepper and liquorice, vanilla and coffee on a toasty bed of new oak.
If you’ve ever locked your lips around a mouthful of Château d’Yquem, you’ll know there is another world to sweet wines, lightyears beyond the stuff we were imbibing here back in the last millenium. These days there are an abundance of sweet styles, many of them very good, but the most admired are those that have been affected by Botrytis cinerea, a.k.a. noble rot. The Botrytis fungus penetrates the grapes’ skin, permitting the water within to evaporate, thereby raising the sugar concentration in the remaining juice and creating intensely sweet and vibrant wines. Of course the French are way out in front, as they so often are, damn them, with the most noted examples being the legendary Sauternes from the Graves region of Bordeaux. These are made from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes that have been nuanced by noble rot. Classic Sauternes and others such as those found in the neighbouring Loupiac region are extravagantly delicious, their distinctive honeysuckle aromas and incomparable opulence the perfect finish to a sumptuous Christmas meal.
There’s nothing like a velvet-lined version of Portugal’s crowning glory to put the seal on the day. Port is the world’s greatest fortified red wine and a true European classic. Whether sweet, or dry or inbetween, a young and fruity Ruby, a nutty, wood-aged Tawny or one of port’s treasured vintage expressions, a good port wine direct from the Douro Valley can put the shine back on your postprandial torpor. You can, of course, sip it solo, but it makes a very good accompaniment to some fine cheeses, dried fruits or walnuts, all things generally within easy reach at Christmas time.

FRANÇOIS MOUTARD
The Moutard-Diligent family can trace their history of viticulture as far back as 1642, but it was not until the 1920s that they began producing champagne under their own name. Today, under the stewardship of François, Veronique, and Agnes Moutard, the estate consists of 22.5 hectares of vines in the Côte des Bar region of southern Champagne. The origins of the vineyard go back to Gallo-Roman times. Along with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, the family is one of the few to still nurture the permitted Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc grapes, instilling these almost forgotten varieties with a new lease of life. Moutard produce a full range of champagnes, including the unique Cuvée des 6 Cépages, made from six different varieties, the only one of its kind. The non-vintage wines are all aged for at least three years, the vintage and prestige champagnes for ten to fifteen. Both Moutard’s rosé and Grande Cuvée non-vintage bottlings are produced from 100% Pinot Noir, with additional complexity achieved through the use of older reserve stocks. The Grande Cuvée is a standout wine, its seductive bouquet of peaches and pears underpinned by touches of almond and brioche. Wonderfully fresh, with creamy textures and an elegant sign-off, it’s an ideal aperitif, but has the weight for food as well. Soaked on its skins, the rosé is a benchmark of the genre, the nose complex, the rich and creamy flavours of strawberry and blackcurrant overlaid with a superb smoky, textural quality. Their méthode traditionnelle is a fantastic sub-$20 French sparkler, produced under the label of Famille Moutard and made just outside the Champagne region from 100% Chardonnay fruit. While Moutard may lack the fame of some of the other marques, their softly-textured wines are nonetheless very impressive, and flying, as they do, somewhat under the radar, they offer exceptional value.

In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Jules Taylor is one of New Zealand’s original pioneers putting a female stamp on things, and a genuine breath of fresh air. She has long maintained an ethos of making high quality, affordable wines to be consumed and enjoyed rather than stashed away in cellars. Born and bred in Marlborough, Jules grew up in the time when that region’s Sauvignon Blanc was wowing the world and setting a Kiwi benchmark. Perhaps inevitable, then, that she would end up with a career pursuing that line. Following a postgraduate course in winemaking and viticulture, her first employment was at Marlborough’s original custom winery, Vintech. Then a winemaking OE took Jules to Italy and Australia to do a series of vintages. On returning to Marlborough, she undertook winemaking duties at a number of high profile wineries. In 2001, together with husband George Elworthy, she established Jules Taylor Wines. Led from the front by their superb Sauvignon Blanc, the entire portfolio has since collected many awards, including New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year at the 2013 International Wine and Spirits Competition. Jules: ‘We source grapes from vineyards in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys; well, not so much vineyards as back corners of vineyards, rises and hollows and bits of vineyards.’ If you haven’t gone there, prepare to be dazzled.

An impressive wine with an aromatic bouquet of crushed pear notes supported by spicy nuances. The palate is intense yet elegant, with a swelling of ripe fruit flavours balanced by the fresh finish. Jules Taylor has been doing ‘special’ for a long time now, with her so-called ‘entry-level’ offerings superior to many with more highfalutin titles attached to them. It’s only recently that she’s raised the bar and taken things up a notch with her OTQ range of single vineyard wines. So, very special grapes, then, with everything that’s done to them done by hand. They look wonderful, taste even better.

A PRODIGIOUS PAIRING Think of the humble grain. Breweries like Garage Project are eternally searching for grand things to do with it. Jameson, however, take a more traditional approach to grain in distilling and aging their Irish Whiskey. While beer drinkers enjoy the hops or malt profile, whiskey drinkers tend to appreciate the quality and smoothness of the spirit and, importantly, the effect of cask aging. Given that all whiskey is effectively distilled from beer, it is not surprising that tasting beer and whiskey side by side shows how lively and experimental malt can be in its youth, and once distilled, how gracefully it can age. To do just that, Jameson and Garage Project have together chosen a selection of beer and whiskey match-ups that best express this duality. Garage Project’s simply-named Beer is the ideal entry point into their range, as straightforward as the name itself. Similarly, standard Jameson is often the entry point for people trying Irish whiskey. It’s smooth, with a toasty, nutty profile and sherry undertones. Garage Project’s Trip Hop, with its resiny bitterness pairs perfectly against the Jameson’s Black Barrel. Rested in twice charred barrels gives it enhanced spicy, nutty notes and vanilla sweetness. Hops on Point, Garage Project’s seminal champagne yeast pilsner, provides levity in its crisp, clean palate and fine champagne bubbles, aptly matched by Jameson’s Distiller’s Safe, the barley sweetness, sweet spice and mandarin peel attained in the Copper Pot distillate. Dirty Boots, Garage Project’s grunge-inspired APA, is hop-forward mayhem. What whiskey better to match with a hoppy APA than Jameson’s Caskmates, which was rested in old barrels that previously held stout, infusing the whiskey with a subtle touch of hops, cocoa beans and charred oak, with a butterscotch finish. Jameson is far older than Garage Project, but the established style and tradition of their whiskeys provide the perfect complement to Garage Project’s experimental approach.

Rum. Just the word makes you want to put on a big hat and indulge in a bit of swashbuckling. Of course at this time of year, a number of you will be on boats, just saying. In the 17th-century sugarcane plantations of the Caribbean, slaves discovered that molasses could be fermented into alcohol, and an entire industry was born. From there it found its way into Colonial America, where politicians would bribe voters with rum to swing elections. So little has changed. In 1655 the British fleet captured Jamaica and the rum industry became the property of the Royal Navy. With rum included in the daily rations of all Navy seamen, as well as most pirates, many hardy souls developed an addiction and rum became a serious form of currency. The Royal Navy continued to give its sailors a daily rum ration until the 1970s. The last naval force in the world to let go of that tradition was the Royal New Zealand Navy, in 1990. Rum offers a diversity of styles: Light rums (sometimes referred to as white or silver) are often filtered to remove any colour and are, with their milder flavour, ideal for cocktails. The fullerbodied dark rums tend to be made from caramelized molasses and matured in charred casks. Gold rums (also known as amber) are lighter than the dark rums but stronger than the light rums, making them popular in mixed drinks. Most spiced rums are gold rum with added herbs and spices, although some of the pricier versions can be dark rum-based. Sipping rums are the so-called ‘premiums’, made to be consumed either on their own or over ice. So there you go. It’s all up to you from here.
