Our Antipodean cousins now have have some serious time under their belts when it comes to winemaking. At least in New World terms. This equates to unparalleled vine age (having avoided the phylloxera aphid that destroyed vines elsewhere) and a generational continuity that is worthy of acknowledgement. The nice thing is that the respective vinous strengths of our two countries tend to lie in differing arenas. One could even opine that the dual outputs complement – as opposed to compete with – each other. What are we saying? That it’s okay to dismount from our high horses and enjoy the undeniable flair that is to be found within a good Australian red. Or a white, for that matter – where our paths do converge is in the places where Australia can lay claim to cool climate conditions. There are some very clever and accomplished winemakers currently plying their art across the ditch. They are more than worthy of your attention, so hop on the bus as we go in search of the Wine Wizards of Oz.

Fancy a trip to the Adelaide Fringe Festival and a guided tour through the Barossa Valley?

Few champagne houses remain in family hands. The impressively-pedigreed Pol Roger is one of them. Residing in the heart of Epernay with cellars running below the Avenue de Champagne for over seven kilometres, they are highly-skilled vinous alchemists in possession of an exquisite collection of wines. The English obviously love them, with Pol Roger one of only eight houses to bear the English Royal Seal, and the late Winston Churchill clutching Pol to his steely heart as a personal favourite. Their Brut Réserve NV displays layer upon layer of exquisitely balanced flavour and texture, the richly lush fruit and toast defined by precise, refreshing citrus and acid. Aristocratic.

The globally-lauded Pegasus Bay was established by Ivan and Christine Donaldson in 1986 with the planting of the first vines in the Waipara Valley. It is very much a family business, with the four Donaldson sons and their spouses involved in every aspect of the operation. The Donaldsons support natural methods of cultivation, the home vineyard sustainably managed on a low-cropping regime to deliver the best possible fruit to the winemaking team, which is led by eldest son, Matthew. Minimal interventionists, they utilize a combination of traditional and modern winemaking techniques, allowing the wines to undergo natural malolactic fermentation and clarification by settling, with the resulting expressions vividly evoking the unique characteristics of the local Waipara terroir. The Pegasus Bay range is produced exclusively from estategrown fruit, while the second-tier Main Divide wines are made from a combination of their own fruit and that of other growers. Pegasus Bay also produce a range of super-premium reserve wines, made in small quantities and only in the best years.

BAROSSA G R A N T

P E T E R

One of the Barossa’s star wineries, Peter Lehmann was launched in 1982. They have their own vineyards, but are supplied as well by around 185 independent growers. Lehmann himself, who passed away in 2013, was affectionately known as the Baron of the Barossa, and was incredibly loyal to his growers through good times and bad.

The Burge family have been associated with winemaking in the Barossa Valley for five generations. Current champion of the family obsession is Grant Burge, who established the Grant Burge Winery in 1988. He believes that vineyards are the key to it all, and personally oversees every aspect of production from the vineyard through to the winemaking.

This super-premium Cabernet matches intensity with finesse, its deep, inky-purple hues and lush aromatics of blackcurrant, chocolate, mint and vanilla lifting the exuberant palate of berryfruit and liquorice characters to another level. With its fine-grained tannins and exceptional length, the Shadrach will be good to go for around 15 years.

First established in 1893 by the Kaesler family, ancient Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre vines provide the backbone, power and intensity for which the Kaesler wines are renowned. Kaesler own substantial holdings in the Barossa, all meticulously managed, with the vines handpruned, yields kept low and the grapes hand-harvested. High quality wines imbued with vision and finesse.

H E W I T S O N In the top echelon of Australian winemakers, Dean Hewitson derives his fruit and his inspiration from some of Australia’s oldest and most treasured vineyards, many of them planted pre-phylloxera and more closely linked to the original vines of Europe. Outstanding quality.

MOTHER VINE MONOPOLE SHIRAZ 2015

$145.00 T O R B R E C K

Hewitson’s Monopole vineyard is derived from one surviving Shiraz vine planted back in 1853, resurrecting an ancient clone of pre-Phylloxera Shiraz. The nose is replete with rich black fruits and floral notes, the lengthy palate a chorus of intense blackberry, raspberry and chocolate characters with savoury nuances and seamlessly integrated tannins. Stunning.

Classic wines, crafted from small parcels of very old Barossa vines, some more than 100 years of age, with yields kept low to deliver ultra-concentrated flavours, a hallmark of these opulent, deeply resonant wines. One of the Barossa’s greats, Robert Parker included Torbreck in his list of the world’s top 100 estates.

TORBRECK

A shining example of the new generation of Barossa Shiraz vineyards. Dense and opulent, it elegantly combines marvellous fruit purity with texture and complexity. A few years of cellar time would reap rewards. The Woodcutter’s is a great introduction to the stunning Torbreck range.

Yep, the people below are winemakers. And no, they’re not your normal garden variety. Winemaker Dr Andrew Hedley is a man with a Riesling obsession, one globally recognised for its skyscraping standards. Could there be a fussier, more determined winemaker in these parts? Probably not.

F R A M I N G H A M R I E S L I N G S

He is acknowledged as one of the most skilled makers of Riesling in the world. But here’s the intriguing thing: thanks to a bout with throat cancer the doctor has no larynx. Which means that his lungs and oesophagus are now disconnected and there’s no air flow into his nostrils; a new way to get aroma into his nose (essentially to smell) needed to be found. Thankfully his radiation therapists also knew what he did for a living, and were able to preserve most of the salivary glands and so on, so the ability to taste largely remained.

12681

A sweet late harvest-style Riesling with generous lashings of apricot and citrus flavours and perfect acidity. Intensely concentrated and viscous.

Framingham aren’t just Riesling obsessives, they’re music obsessives too. And we like that; it’s called living life to the full. We don’t quite know how The Doctor pulls all this off. A triumph of endeavour over adversity.

The great swathes of vineyards that nestle in the hills, valleys and plains of the southern Rhône have been churning out the vino since pre-Roman times and are the source of the Côtes du Rhône wines. The appellation produces a variety of styles, but the bulk of production is red. Dominated by Grenache and augmented with varieties such as Syrah and Mourvèdre, these sublimely fruity, spice-edged wines constitute some of France’s best-value drinking. Versatile with a wide range of foods, they are made for immediate drinking but possess the depth for some short-term cellaring. What’s more, we’re letting you in on a secret: the 2015 vintage is exceptional! You’d be mad not to. 43312 41379 41329

EN PRIMEUR Ever wanted to buy Bordeaux, but not sure where to start? The 2017 Bordeaux vintage is about to be sold En Primeur, a term that refers to the process of buying the wines before they are bottled and released onto the market; the wine is normally delivered two years later. When purchasing En Primeur, you are buying the wine at the initial release price, direct from Bordeaux. For many châteaux, this is usually the lowest you’ll ever get, and significantly lower than the future retail prices. Glengarry have sold fine wines via the En Primeur system since 1983, so we know our stuff. We have longstanding relationships with the best négoçiants in France, relationships that guarantee us the offer and supply of wine that is simply not made available to other merchants.
