It’s true! The wine in magnums invariably does taste better than the 750ml model. It’s because the wine matures more slowly in the larger-format bottle, and as the magnum’s cork is around the same size as that of the smaller bottle, the negative effects of oxidation are less pronounced.

MARTINB OROUGH MAGIC THREE PADDLES
THREE PADDLES MARTINBOROUGH
13294
CASE OF 12 $12.99 A BOTTLE Martinborough Sauvignons have a distinctly fruity nature and a ton of tropical fruit characters that distinguish them from their neighbours just to the south. The melon and passionfruit notes are underpinned with a smart herbaceous minerality.
NGA WAKA
Roger’s abiding interest in things vinous began at the age of 14, when he was exposed to his father Gordon’s fascination for the subject during a diplomatic tenure in France. The Parkinsons purchased their first block in 1986 and named Nga Waka after the three hills Nga Waka a Kupe that are the backdrop to Martinborough.

SAUVIGNON BLANC 2013

‘I saw the difference on our Home Block vines at about fifteen years,’ he says, ‘where the varietal character of the fruit starts to become somewhat less important, but more interesting because of richness, balance and texture, all the things that are critical for food wines. With vine age the character of the vineyard is more strongly expressed.’
NGA WAKA
16333
An elegantly styled, off-dry Riesling delivering zesty citrus characters underscored by floral notes and a crisp finish. The fruit was cool fermented in stainless steel to retain varietal characters and freshness. Perfectly suited to the summer months.
One of the many great things about Nga Waka is that they’ve been around a while now, originally getting the ball rolling back in 1988; not only have Roger Parkinson and his team been able to carve a distinct niche as winemakers of quality and individuality, it means you can wander onto the subject of old vines.

CÔTES DU RHÔNE As the mighty Rhône flows south towards the Mediterranean, it unites more than twenty individual vinous appellations (AOC) within the Rhône Valley’s northern and southern sub-regions. The area as a whole, though, is covered by the Côtes-du-Rhône AOC, a designation that accounts for 80% of the total volume produced. The bulk of the wines (predominantly red, but with some whites and rosés) are sourced from the southern region. The AOC legislation allows for up to 21 varieties to be used in red blends, but states that they must include a minimum of 40% Grenache, along with portions of Syrah and Mourvèdre, and that they may also include Cinsault, Carignan and other minor varieties. A significant amount of good quality wines are produced by cooperatives, but the real treasures come from individual domaines and producer/négociants with their own particular styles, creating a collection of approachable, food-friendly, great value wines that are held in high regard around the world.

HARDYS Hardys are one of the New World’s great wine producers, with the fifth generation of the Hardy family now helming the operation. 20-year-old Englishman Thomas Hardy arrived in Australia in 1850, and by 1857 he’d bottled his first vintage, in the process establishing one of the country’s foremost winemaking dynasties. Initially working for South Australia’s pioneeringwinemaker, John Reynell, Hardy purchased his first property, Bankside, in 1853, with his wines becoming the first in Australia to be awarded gold medals at the International Wine Shows in Bordeaux, 1882, and Paris, 1889. Only recently celebrating 160 years in the winemaking business, to date Hardys wines have been awarded almost 7,000 awards, a haul that includes over 1,000 gold medals. Under the stewardship of 5th generation family member Bill Hardy and Hardys’ 19th and current Chief Winemaker, Paul Lapsley, that tally will only increase as the company continues its long tradition of blending between regions and varieties to create hallmark wines of character and complexity.
