SERVICES
Well, here we are in 2017, and there you all are, drink in hand, reclining on your deck chairs gazing out over azure waters. You’re not? Well, perhaps a glass of wine will help you pretend that you are. Works for me. As we sally forth into what will presumably be another year of surprising events (no one can deny that 2016 was at times somewhat surprising) it’s good to have something restorative at hand, if only to take the edge off the shock when a David Bowie or a Leonard Cohen departs the world, or when one is subjected to the bizarrely twisted sideshow that is the American electoral process. We’re starting out as we mean to continue, i.e. with as much style and joie de vivre as we can muster. Pinot Noir NZ 2017 has just brightened our world, and we celebrate with a collection of twenty-four of this country’s finest. We also go decidedly pink (in the bottle, but not on the beach) as we inspect a couple of Italian sparkling models and lay out a further range of still and sparkling rosés from here, there and over yonder. What else? A sultry selection of summer whites; Matawhero’s 2016 releases; a trio of great brews from craft beer wunderkinds, Panhead; Piper-Heidsieck’s take on the latest cinematic season; four groovy summer cocktail ideas; offerings from around the globe; our Top 10 wines for February and, last but by no means least, we examine the various vinous tiers on offer from Marlborough’s Lake Chalice. Let’s get cracking, then.

Look, we know you’re back at work and life as you knew it is over, but don’t wallow in your self-pity. Nobody wants to see that. Focus instead on the little windows ahead with such titles as ‘Public Holiday’ or ‘Valentine’s Day’ and imagine yourself hopping in the car and slipping away with your beloved, off on a romantic rendezvous with your trusty Travel Pack, containing not only a chilled bottle of the rather fabulous Piper NV, but also two delightful champagne flutes, all tucked in and ready to go. Perfect. Isn’t life grand?
Hawkes Bay’s Peter Robertson is a clever man. Why don’t more people know that he is one of our finest winemakers? Inordinately humble, his winery may not have the refined inclinations of a Cloudy Bay or the brash flash of an Invivo, but he sure as hell has the requisite skills, honed over four decades of turning out vinous gems. From such a lengthy and intimate relationship with one place, the man knows his terroir inside out. While others storm the vinous heights, Peter Robertson quietly goes about the business of delivering a set of wines that are uniformly excellent, and staggeringly good value given their price-tags. He sits where a number of our finest winemakers do: out on the cusp, delivering seriously good vinos that are made for consumption with imaginative food and stimulating conversation, unassumingly pleasurable to drink and decidedly easy on the pocket. The perfect wines for a life well-lived, one might say. Utilising knowledge originally accrued in the early 1970s under the formative guidance of legendary Hawkes Bay winemaking pioneer, Tom McDonald, Peter purchased Brookfields in 1977 in order to pursue his own beautifully boutique vision. Even his superb premium wines are eminently affordable. Don’t presume reasonable pricing to equate with some sort of medium-level quality; here, you’re getting top-level wines at bargain-level pricing. Who can argue with that?

Hey, we love a glass of good rosé any old time, but we’d also be the first to admit that it’s under the hot summer sun when the ‘ahh, that’s nice’ factor really kicks in. Our own hemisphere, it has to be said, has become quite adept at turning out sublime expressions of the genre. At the end of the day, though, it’s hard to go past those bâtards français, isn’t it?

Ciao. Are you Italian? No? We thought not. In that case you’re probably more than a little confused by the proliferation of uniquelymonikered sparkling wines that emanate from Italy’s shores. Prosecco, Lambrusco, Asti, Franciacorta – it’s all a little murky if you don’t quite know what’s going on. The ancient Greeks, who had a word for everything, called Italy Oenotria, or Land of Vines. It was true then and it is still so today, because no other country produces such a remarkably diverse range of wine styles. There are few Italian winemakers who do not produce a spumante style (spumante being Italian for sparkling wine). The finest are crafted in the most northerly regions of Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto. The most fashionably successful is Prosecco. Italy produces more sparkling wine styles than any other country, including an impressive selection of sparkling rosés. Made the same way as champagne, the thoroughbred Franciacorta is its Italian equivalent and includes some very fine rosé expressions. Fashioned for early consumption, the historically sweet Lambrusco is a red variety that is these days used to make an increasingly dry and refreshing sparkling rosé. Of interest here is Prosecco. Produced largely in the north, this inherently Italian style is the current high-flier (popularity-wise) of that country’s sparkling wine. When it comes to pink, however, the Prosecco Powers That Be hold fiercely to their traditional white-wine identity; i.e. no red varieties permitted. This is not to say that rosé Proseccos don’t exist; they just can’t be labelled as such. Want to know what such a thing would taste like? The rather lovely and delicate sparkling rosé from Santa Margherita fits that bill. Made from Prosecco’s Glera variety with some red input via a kiss of Malbec, it is elegantly fresh, florally fragrant, delivering that same refreshing, easy-drinking quality that makes Prosecco so popular. Prosecco aces Mionetto produce a refined and fragrant sparkling extra-dry rosé. Aromatic notes of grapefruit, blackcurrent and rose enhance its raspberry and strawberry characters. Just the thing for a little casual sipping in the sun.

There is no longer any doubt that New Zealand Pinot Noir is kicking serious butt out in the big wide world. From its tentative beginnings in Martinborough, it has relentlessly consumed the country until the majority of us are now embracing New Zealand expressions rather than the Burgundian model. As with Sauvignon Blanc and Marlborough, Pinot Noir has put Central Otago firmly on the map, although those Marlborough winemakers, seemingly not content with their own gold-plated status, are intent on having a serious crack at the Pinot crown as well. All of this is, of course, good news for consumers. It is a sign of Pinot Noir’s ever-increasing status that the Pinot Noir NZ event staged in Wellington every four years is one of the most anticipated celebrations in the wine calendar. Pinot Noir NZ 2017’s retail partner was Glengarry. We fancy a whole array of vinous delights, but the wonderfully evocative Ms Noir retains a special place in our hearts. With the country’s most extensive collection at our fingertips, including all of the Pinot Noir wines featured at this year’s event, you may just want to check us out. We’ll let the Chair of Pinot Noir NZ 2017, Ben Glover, have the last word: ‘Wow what a week; and if you were lucky enough to be in Wellington between Jan 30th and Feb 3rd you would have encountered a full immersion into everything New Zealand Pinot Noir. It was the 4th annual Pinot Noir NZ 2017 event held on the waterfront, and with our exclusive wine retailer Glengarry on hand with a virtual pop-up store and the www.pinotpalooza.com gang rocking the free world, it was a week to remember. From this Glengarry have selected 24 wines – what they believe to be the perfect Pinot Noir to enjoy through the late summer.

Wonderful Chablis from a masterful producer. The fruit is off 25-year-old vines, the wine rich and elegant, with notes of honeyed flowers and spice, creamy textures and a fresh mineral finish.
From the historic sherry house established in 1760. Pronounced yeast and rock salt notes on the nose. Stone-dry, but packed with flavour, it’s beautifully balanced, quite weighty and remarkably fresh.

Young Love. What’s that about? Apart from generating a rather intense play involving an intergenerational feud and teenage death, it has spawned an astonishing piece of real estate in Verona. In a house claiming to be the Capulets’, Juliet’s balcony, or more accurately, the walls of the courtyard beneath it play host to the ardent emotions of legions of lovelorn youngsters (many of them tourists) channelling their inner R&J and inscribing their steadfast loyalty to one another. Pasqua, being Italian, couldn’t help themselves and have created this no doubt tear-stained tribute to the unstoppable force that is Young Love. Cheers to that, we say.
CASE OF 6 $18.99 A BOTTLE Burge was a pioneer of Merlot in the Barossa. Smooth, rich, soft and supple, the refined and generous flavours are enhanced by fine-grained tannins and notes of spice, mocha and vanilla.
