SERVICES

We’re on the road to Kiwiland, hopping from region to region (do kiwi hop?), taking a peek therein and celebrating the wonderous quality and diversity to be found upon these shores, from the refined and esoteric delights of a Brajkovich Chardonnay to the vinous glories extracted from Central Otago’s savage grandeur. Elsewhere, we dig into Mud House without getting our hands remotely dirty, check out the new 6-bottle packs from Matakana’s Brewing maestros, Sawmill, pop the cork on Quartz Reef’s eco-friendly sparkling wines, review some of New Zealand’s high-flying spirit producers, feature new vintage releases from Allan Scott and the Craggy Range Prestige collection and hand out some tips for your winter drinking. There is, too, a piece on Australian winemakers Knappstein, a large offering from NZ’s historic Church Road winery and the usual monthly roundup of our top ten wines. Enjoy, Jak Jakicevich

TE MATA

C O L E R A I N E 2015

$140.00

19142

Since its first vintage in 1982, Te Mata Coleraine has cemented its reputation as one of New Zealand’s finest and most iconic red wines. The 2015 is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Attractive floral aromatics of lavender, violet, rose and cassis accompany a concentrated and textural palate of blackcurrant, black cherry, strawberry and subtle cedar. Huge cellaring potential; five years minimum.

BURLEIGH PINOT ROSÉ 2016

$16.99 CLAIM 431 VINEYARD, CENTRAL OTAGO

14363

A fresh and elegant rosé with soft summer fruit aromas underscored by spice and herbal notes. The beautifully balanced strawberry and floral characters are enlivened by a clean, lively finish.

Brits John and Jennifer Joslin were touring the world in their yacht in the 1990s when they made landfall in the Marlborough Sounds. What’s not to love? They fell hard, and decided on the spot that making wine was the thing for them. They purchased land, prepared it for vine planting, and while still living in their yacht had a mud brick house built on site from local earth. And right there, folks, we have the birth of the Mud House wine brand. 21 years on, accompanied by some shifts in ownership, Mud House have gone on to earn an enviable reputation for their vinous output.

The winemaking team at Mud House is headed by Cleighten Cornelius, a viticulture and oenology graduate from Lincoln University. He gained serious winemaking experience in France and Germany before returning to NZ and joining Mud House in 2012. Cleighten heads up an experienced team that has been with the company pretty much since the beginning.

Located just north of a burgeoning Auckland, once a hotbed for the NZ wine industry and home to many of our pioneers (think Collards, Babich, Corbans). The Brajkovich family have survived the growth of our largest city, along with the challenges of the region, to craft some of our finest Chardonnay. The Auckland humidity does not make for easy winemaking, but the Brajkovich family’s skill set sees off all obstacles.

The island of Waiheke is an hour by ferry from the centre of Auckland and a magnet for every visiting celebrity with time on their hands. With its multitude of sub climates, Waiheke produces excellent wines in a wide variety of styles, the maritime climate and soils favouring Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec for red wines and Chardonnay for white, with Pinot Gris particularly suited to satellite island, Ponui.

A veritable oasis for peaches, apples, pears and almost everything else, Gisborne’s wines are also a variable mix. It is home to NZ’s best nursery, Riversun, and as a result there is a good deal of experimentation going on. Where, once upon a time, most of the grapes were destined for sparkling wine production, Chardonnay is, these days, the ruling variety, though Chenin Blanc is right up there too. Merlot rules the reds.

A warm and historical region where Tom McDonald made many of New Zealand’s early clarets, the famed gravels derived from river beds provide excellent soils for Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, with the hillsides home to the increasingly successful Syrah. Cabernet blends, then, dominate the red landscape. The white variety of choice is Chardonnay, though the Bay’s Sauvignon Blanc shouldn’t be overlooked.

New Zealand’s rockstar wine region; ask virtually anyone outside our shores, and you’ll hear the words, ‘Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.’ Particular clones of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were originally planted merely as a base for sparkling wines. Though this has changed, the region is still running a little behind the likes of Martinborough and Central Otago. That said, the latest incarnations of Pinot Noir are outstanding.

AKARUA

Matakana’s great. Think ‘green as’ hills. Think ‘blue as’ skies. Actually, scrap that; think ‘tasty as’ beers. Matakana natives Sawmill have increasingly become a staple in not only craft beer digs, but restaurants, bars, and bottle shops of all descriptions. Here’s why: if you like something traditional, just a casual pint or an easy drop, their 12 Gauge, Pilsner and Pale Ale are just a few examples of their true-to-style beers that whet whistles wonderfully. If you want to have your taste buds wrestled and your mind blown, how about you try their IPA, The Doctor or Session IPA? Both their IPA and their Pilsner are available in 6-packs now, so it’s even easier to take with you. The brewery was opened in 2004 in Leigh, where once stood a timber mill built in the 1860s. Now Sawmill has relocated the brewery to a new spot on Leigh road in Matakana, operating on a larger scale and opening their restaurant, the Smoko Room. Owners Mike and Kirsty reckon the “raw landscape has a bearing on everything.” So maybe those ‘green as’ hills and ‘blue as’ skies are ‘important as’ after all.

AUSTRIAN

ARTISTRY

RUDI BAUER

Direct and to the point; loves to stir things up; adores vintage champagne; qualified viticulturist and winemaker; consummate creator when it comes to either Pinot Noir or méthode traditionnelle: these are all apt descriptors of Austrian-born Rudi Bauer. Established in 1996 and named after New Zealand’s largest quartz deposit that lies beneath the vineyards at Bendigo Station, Quartz Reef has become the vessel for what winemaker Rudi Bauer calls his search to make wines that exhibit ‘a symphony of flavours that capture attention and entertain so that you forget everything else’. Rudi’s Pinot Noir is world-class, and his superb méthodes champion brilliantly the true potential of our southernmost regions for sparkling wine, produced as they are entirely from his own estate-grown fruit, a la Grower champagnes. He is a strong advocate of biodynamics, and Quartz Reef’s two 15-hectare Bendigo vineyards are strictly and passionately managed by the principles developed by fellow Austrian, Rudolf Steiner. The management regime of the biodynamic DemeterCertified vineyards is both arduous and time consuming, but the results speak for themselves. Quartz Reef wines are produced entirely in-house, from vineyard through to bottling, ensuring the total quality control and consistency that have earned them accolades everywhere.

DE BORTOLI

FS SHIRAZ 2014 Clare Valley‘s Knappstein is one of the most recognisable and popular wine operations in South Australia, with the Knappstein name involved in the business there since the late 19th century. In 1894, J H Knappstein, one of the largest vineyard owners in the Clare, co-purchased the premises of the Clare Jam Company and established The Stanley Wine Company. Following its sale, Tim Knappstein went on to establish the Knappstein Enterprise Winery in 1974, which is housed in the heritage-listed Enterprise Brewery building established in 1878 to satisfy thirsty local miners. The company manages its own vineyards, with winemaker Glen Barry focused on producing a selection of handcrafted, single vineyard wines. The relatively boutique output harnesses Clare Valley’s unique attributes to deliver a flawless selection of fresh expressions displaying pure and vibrant flavours.
