We’re off to what some would say was wine’s spiritual home, that oasis of oenology, virtuoso of the vine, grande dame of the grape, France (undoubtedly their opinion, grudgingly, perhaps, ours too). Egged on by the Greeks and the Romans, they’ve been at this winemaking business for a while now, and they’ve become (some would say) annoyingly good at it. Indeed, it doesn’t take long to uncover the fact that many of the world’s finest vinous practitioners take their inspiration from the holy grails of Burgundian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the legendary reds and the sweet wines of Bordeaux, the aromatic wonders of Alsace, the spicy opulence and deft balance of the Rhône Valley’s blended wines, the delicious delicacy of Chablisean Chardonnay, the smoky, mineral elegance of the Loire Valley Sauvignons, or perhaps the deceptively pale yet dazzlingly weighted Provençal rosés. And really, who can forget the effervescent pinnacle that is French champagne? It just goes on. So, ignoring the self-satisfied look on the dials of the French, we’re off, then, on a quick jaunt around the Gallic provinces. Those damnable people and their wine: you’d think they invented the stuff. In the end, though, it’s a fait accompli; for sheer class in the glass, they are the vinous benchmark by which we all measure ourselves.

The south-facing Château La Serre was erected in the 17th century and procured in the 1950s by the d’Arfeuille family, who are still in residence. The vine mix is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. La Serre’s (relatively) modestly-priced wines offer particularly good value in the better vintages. A fresh, elegant style displaying a floral nose and silky raspberry and black cherry fruit complemented by a touch of savoury and a gentle finish. Pop it away for at least another 3-4 years.

CASE OF 6 $14.99 A BOTTLE ESK VALLEY WINEMAKER, GORDON RUSSELL
Motoring south on Highway 5 from Taupo to Napier, the first sign that you have reached Hawkes Bay wine country is the wel-coming sight of rows of vineyards lining the roads through Eskdale and on to Bay View. Tucked into the hillside is Esk Valley Estate, regarded as one of the best boutique producers in the country. The original winery was established in 1933 by Robert Bird, and under the management of two successive generations it grew to become a major player. Despite extensive upgrading, the strong buildings at its heart have been retained, including the 85-year-old concrete, open-top fermentation tanks. Appointed in 1993, the award-winning
winemaker Gordon Russell has seriously elevated Esk Valley’s status, with a ‘Winemaker of the Year’ title firmly under his belt. The winery produces some of the finest reds in the country, and in recent years has built a strong reputation for its unique white wines.
Grapes from Esk Valley’s more northerly vineyards at Bay View introduce the tropics, while the fruit off the terraces at Puketapu add a flintier citrus note.

B U R G U N DY The wines produced from this stretch of vinous real estate are among the world’s greatest. The only simple thing about Burgundy is that if it’s red it’s Pinot Noir or Gamay, and if it’s white it’s Chardonnay (more or less), and from there on it gets trickier. Inheritance laws have seen vineyards divided into ever smaller family parcels, and within a sea of small producers, it is not uncommon for a single vineyard to have numerous owners.

The Rhône twists and turns down the map in a sinewy slalom of picturesque villages and steeply terraced vineyards, in the north offering up some of Syrah’s finest expressions. The south plays host to Grenache and the Rhône’s peerless blended wines, Vacqueyras, Vinsobres and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In between are the rushing red rivers of generic, great-value Côtes du Rhône wines. While 95% of Rhône production is red, there is delight to be found in the floral fragrances of a Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise or the lush apricot and crème frâiche nuances of a Condrieu.

Down along France’s southern coast, where the Med leans enticingly into the Golfe du Lion, the restrictions of the Appellation Contrôlée system in general give way to a freedom around vine cultivation. The benign climate delivers long, sunny days for ripening, while a moderating coastal influence keeps much disease at bay. Formerly known for its cheap bulk-style approach, the current wave of winemakers are more intent on quality and extolling the attributes of their terroir.

The first Roman province to be established outside Italy, Provence has been turning out the vino since at least 600 BC. Stretched along the Mediterranean coast, it is best known for its flagship rosé wines, but also produces excellent spicy, flavoursome reds as well as small quantities of white wine. CHRISTIAN DROUIN
The French may not have invented wine, but they have pioneered practically every conceivable style, and in doing so have set the benchmark for quality and influenced winemakers throughout the world. And as with the likes of Italy and Spain, they have an innate and enlightened understanding that wine is a companion to food. Although the French are inextricably linked with wine, they have at the same time created a diverse range of alternative alcoholic beverages offering a wide variety of aromatic flavours and rich textures. From the controversial Absinthe to the regal cognacs, their spirits and liqueurs have stamped their dominance on the world. The likes of calvados, vermouth and pastis can be enjoyed as aperitifs to stimulate the palate either prior to or after a meal.
In 1960, Christian Drouin purchased a cider apple orchard in Normandy’s Pays d’Auge region and decided to produce the finest calvados he could. His son, Christian Jnr. expanded the business, moved the distillery to larger premises, planted the Coeur de Lion orchard and launched the unique Pomme Prisonnière, featuring an apple trapped in a flask of calvados. 150 gold medals later, they are still going strong via a stable of acclaimed vintage calvados and superb regional ciders.

Salon and Delamotte are two exceptional houses with a common aim: perfection. The stablemates are made separately at different premises but share the same viticultural and philosophical approach. The rare and legendary Salon produces tiny quantities of a single champagne from a single variety and a single cru vineyard, and only in a few select years, at a rate of around four vintages per decade. Salon Le Mesnil is a wine of such singularity it makes anything else seem mass-produced. It is named after the tiny walled Grand Cru vineyard from which the fruit is sourced, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côtes des Blancs. Made solely from Chardonnay fruit, the Salon wines are endowed with the most extraordinary structure, enabling them to age gracefully, often several decades from vintage. Established in 1760, the refined and elegant Delamotte is one of Champagne’s best kept secrets. The majority of its vineyards are Chardonnay and all are Grand Cru status. In 1988, Delamotte joined forces with Salon. Though managed separately, both enjoy the stewardship of Didier Depond, who oversees all aspects of the two houses, which are located side-by-side in Les Mesnil. This familial spirit has its advantages: the stratospheric Salon is made only from the very best vintages, and in tiny quantities. In the years it is not made, the first right to its fruit goes to Delamotte.

FINCA NUEVA RIOJA
Established in the 1990s and widely considered to be one of the most exciting wineries within the Bierzo D.O., Dominio de Tares are infants in Spanish wine terms, but giants in their approach, using ancient vineyards and painstakingly artisan-like practices to bring to bear Bierzo expressions as pure and characterful as can be coaxed from the multiple microclimates in which they operate. With a fierce focus on improving vintage by vintage and harnessing some of the best oenological minds in Spain, they are a benchmark winery for their practices. Their goal is to introduce to the world the virtues of the ancient, indigenous Mencía variety, and their first wines, released in 2000, gained universal acclaim. The Dominio de Tares wines represent a pure expression of terroir that have, along with the likes of Alvaro Palacios, put Bierzo firmly on the global wine-map.
