t takes a special, or slightly crazy, kind of person to be pulled on skis behind a horse at top speeds and hurl themselves in the air. Skijoring is one of the highlight spectator events of the entire Teton Valley Great Snow Fest—prepare to be wowed! Equestrian Skijoring is rooted in western ski towns. It combines the deep history of ski culture and cowboy culture, and brings them together in one fun, wild sport. Northern Europeans had “Dog Joring”, but we westerners added cowboy flare to animal-powered skiing. The competition has five classes: Pro, Sport, Snowboard, Novice and Peewee. Anyone can enter this event, even if they are new! For safety, riders and skiers will be paired up by ability. The jumps are optional. There will be cash prizes for each division. Early race registration rates are available online through January 21st. After the 21st, competitors must register in person on Friday night at a prerace Party at Wildlife Brewing & Pizza in Victor, or on race day. This year, Skijoring will take place in downtown Driggs at 300 Main. Being downtown enables viewers to walk to the

site or take the Grand Targhee shuttle from the ski resort. Great food and delicious local beer will be available on site. Gate entry fees are $5 for adults for one day, or $8 for two days. Kids 12 and under are free.

The Art of Sculpting Snow Jan 22-31

nowscapes: The Art of Sculpting Snow is a Teton Valley must-see event highlighting the beauty of winter with snow art in Driggs City Plaza. Each January teams of 3-5 artists come together to sculpt masterpieces from winter’s natural art medium – Snow! With the help of great support from fellow snow enthusiasts and volunteers from our community large snow blocks are formed and compacted by good ole fashioned boot stompin’! Be a part of creating these blocks by joining us for Snowstomping on Friday afternoon January 22nd, followed by a "Stompers Happy Hour" hosted by the Geotourism Center from 4pm - 7pm. When the snow is set the artists get to work carving and shaping their sculptures over the course of the week. Teams must get creative with their sculpture design and with tools and techniques – no power tools allowed! Shovels, pick axes, trowels and even horse grooming tools and cheese graters are unleashed on the snow to form the shapes and textures needed to make these masterpieces come to life. Community members are highly encouraged to stop by and see the sculptures taking place during sculpting – watching the art come to life is half the fun! Once the artists put their final smoothing and detailing on the finished pieces, professional judging takes place on Saturday, Janu-

way at 7pm inside City Center. Break out those old prom dresses, Canadian tuxedos, thrift store gems or your finest flannel for this awesome party. Teton Dixie Kings, the exceptional local favorite formerly known as the Jackson 6, will be rockin’ the Driggs Community Center with down home Teton-brand Dixieland Jazz! The band will bring the tunes – you bring the dance moves! Beer, wine, finger foods, music, dancing all come together at this uniquely fun and sort-of-formal event. Adults $15, Kids $8.

Along with sculpture viewing festivities there will be vendors, hot chocolate and a kid’s play zone. Be sure to stop in to the Teton Geotourism Center after checking out the sculptures for tons of great displays and more fun for the kiddos. Fan voting results and Judge’s picks for top sculptures will be revealed during the Award Ceremony at 6pm and then it is party time!
