Paolo Abrera – Man of Pure Strength. Living proof that heroes aren’t only found in rescue teams at ground zero, but also working day in and day out to help curb climate disasters. Q: Can you run us through your typical day? Paolo: I wake up at 5:30AM to do a little bit of triathlon training whether it’s swimming or biking. From 9AM to 11AM, I do a live morning show called Mornings@ANC, and then my schedule varies from there. Sometimes I need to shoot something for Green Living or drop by the office. Sometimes I go to get honeydews or bring the girls (Leona, Jadey, and Nella who are 10, 9, and 8 respectively) to some lakad they have. Q: How did the idea of a sustainable lifestyle show come about? Paolo: A lot of people say “Oh, I want to be a little greener but I don’t want to live in a cave or hug a tree” – you don’t have to do that. We wanted to show what you do is a drop in the bucket and if you count everybody’s drop in the bucket, it makes a difference. Q: How about you and your family? When did you start living with a proenvironment mindset? Paolo: It’s become second nature to me. My parents will say, “Oh, don’t throw that away, we can still use it for this and that.”And we try to do the same. You can segregate your garbage, make a compost pit, choose not to use Styrofoam, consciously not use products that are not loaded with chemicals. Change what you can change, the rest will follow.

The Hope of a Mother-daughter duo Loudette and Mara Banson narrate how Loudette’s struggle with breast cancer brought their family together in faith, hope, and overwhelming love.
Diagnosis and Determination
“It was actually first my dad who got sick,” says 26-year-old Mara. “He got a brain hemorrhage in 2006. So I think it was all the stress that really led to my mom’s breast cancer in 2007.” “It was actually the masahista [masseuse] who first found the bump,” 55-year-old Loudette recounts. “After that I went to a breast surgeon, got a needle biopsy, and the slides confirmed that I had Stage II breast cancer.” Encouraged by her children and friends, Loudette gathered the strength to undergo a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and multiple surgeries. Her cancer eventually went into remission – but in 2010, her family learned that the cancer had returned and spread to her breastbone.
Breast Cancer Survivor Crusading Against Cancer
An active member of the Family Rosary Crusade, Loudette turned to prayer and went on retreat. After another round of surgery, Loudette’s bone scans reflected that the cancer had stopped spreading – against all medical odds. Now with her cancer still in remission, Loudette braves her new life with fortitude and hope. “I really want women to know that it’s okay to say you’re tired and you want to take a break for a while,” she shares. “It’s okay to give yourself some time just to feed your soul.” Loudette also attributes her healing to a strong social support system. “It’s very important to have a friend that you can talk to,” she smiles. “Above all, it’s my children that keep me believing that we’ve licked the enemy.”

Committing to a long-term healthy lifestyle is something both Loudette and Mara advocate. “It’s really about changing the way you eat,” Mara explains. Loudette recommends adopting a paleolithic diet and kefir water to maintain a healthy immune system. “One thing that has struck me in the course of the treatment is the importance of healing the whole self,” she continues. “In the end, it’s all balance – to try to be yourself in equilibrium and the best way is to stop whatever you’re doing at some point and give that time to the Lord.”
