Dear Friends, In my younger years, I had problems with acne ranging from small bumps in my forehead to occasional, attention grabbing, angry zits. I tried the full range of remedies from over the counter ointments to trips to the dermatologist. What I remember most from this period are two things: my insecurity over having acne and how harsh these anti-acne products were. Which is why I’m so glad we were able to address these issues in our newest revolutionary product, the Acne Defense Solution Gel. It is all-natural, gentle and safe but clinically proven to treat mild to moderate acne. I wish I had this back then! Two more new products excite me as well as a mom in my mid 30s. Lithe and vivacious, Isay AlvarezSeña works the camera with not a hint at her grueling week on the wildly popular Rak of Aegis – where she plays barangay captain Mary Jane with wit and compassion. “I do yoga,” she quips, arching her back on cue. Isay’s roster of roles is studded with strong, feisty women: Cory Aquino in Cory the Musical, vaudeville legend Katy de la Cruz in Katy! – and her breakout role bar queen Gigi in Miss Saigon. “I think the most challenging was Katy because of the dancing, the kind of singing, the production – and I was sick then,” says Isay, who persisted despite being diagnosed with leukemia. “I was 95 lbs. I was not supposed to be performing at all. But I said, if I rest I will die. Every curtain call, thankful ako sa Diyos for sustaining me.” Her passion paid off – Isay won the Aliw Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Katy.
Isay has since overcome her illness and is at the peak of health, tirelessly campaigning for Philippine theater with her husband, Miss Saigon veteran Robert Seña. “When we came home from London, this has been our advocacy. If we don’t support local productions, we might as well forget our national artists who worked so hard to promote us, the culture, the artistry.” While Rak of Aegis is still worlds apart from the dazzling sets of West End or Broadway, it manages to pull off some stunning sequences. “Ang Pinoy, iba ang ingenuity,” declares Isay. She lists Filipino productions she would love to see tour internationally: “Batang Rizal. Juan Tamad. Katy because she was able to bring pride to the country.” Isay’s advice for aspiring theater actors is practical and down to earth: “I tell them not to stop learning even if you’re already the lead star. For Katy, I had to learn tap dance. I still enjoy learning and discovering things,” she says with a twinkle in her eye. And to that we say: Bravo!

uman Nature was first officially introduced in the United Arab Emirates in May 2013 by the company Natural Essence. It was brought in by an Emirati couple Abdalla al Naqbi and his wife Dr. Najla Al Naqbi after being introduced to Human Nature’s Natural Spray Sanitizer and falling in love with not just the product, but the Pro-Poor advocacy of the brand. When asked what made them decide to apply to become an international distributor, Abdalla replied “It was due to my interest on using natural products, and I was touched by the advocacy of Human Nature for helping poor people, raising funds to build houses for them and creating job opportunities for them.” To date, Human Nature UAE is the fastestgrowing international distributor. hen we started Human Nature, it was always supposed to be a vehicle to help not only poor communities, but also the working poor,” begins Dylan Wilk, Human Nature’s Chief Operating Officer as he talks about the company’s first manufacturing plant in Canlubang, Laguna. 6 years and 30 branches after Human Nature first opened its doors, the company’s ever-vibrant hive of activity is a testament to this mission.

World-Class R&D Being in the Philippines is like walking under a giant Christmas tree, with all the gifts still wrapped. There are so many plants that God has blessed our land with, but nobody truly knows what their extracts can do yet. Our new laboratories will enable us to study the properties of Philippine plants, hopefully leading to greater discoveries that have never been seen before.
Export to Drive Prosperity The new plant will enable us to export in bigger volumes too. When Filipino brands can sell their goods at first world prices, first world salaries will come to the Philippines.
Working Rewards The Philippines’ manufacturing sector shows much promise as a venue for developing human capital and fostering inclusive national economic growth. By increasing job opportunities that promote fairness, competitiveness, stability, dignity of laborers, and quality of life, gamechanging businesses engage the working poor towards shared growth. “The most exciting thing about starting our own factory is that it gives us a chance to show the whole country that it’s possible to treat factory workers differently,” Wilk points out. Its 50 starting employees, gathered mostly from Gawad Kalinga communities, will be working on a regularized – rather than contractual – arrangement with full benefits for almost twice the mandated daily minimum wage.
Natural Care Factory Manufacturing genuinely natural personal care and beauty products has always been challenging. “Toll manufacturers in our
industry are designed for production of synthetic products and are not adapted to the nuances needed for the processes in making natural products,” asserts Supply Chain Planner Angeli Diamante. “Since we have complete control of the equipment and manufacturing processes in our factory,” Diamante explains, “we can constantly find ways to innovate and improve on our quality.”
Building the Dream “On a personal level, I want to build quality of life outside Manila,” Wilk contemplates. “That’s the dream in the end: to show what quality of life can be like outside Manila for the poor and for everyone else.”
